Lucidlethargy, to technology in Amazon To Start Running Ads In Prime Video Series and Movies, Will Launch Ad-Free Tier For Extra Fee

Maybe it’s time to cancel Amazon prime. I don’t feel like they even met their commitments any longer for delivery… So what’s it all for?

TheHighRoad,
@TheHighRoad@lemmy.world avatar

Good point. Amazon is definitely trying to make COVID issues the new normal.

letsgocrazy,

I still always try and make above 25£ or whatever the minium delivery amount is, despite a decade and a half of Prime.

So I don’t know what I’m getting for it either.

The one thing in life I cannot abide are adverts and I will not tolerate them.

So with the media industry strikes the content is already going to be crap next year. Why not also include ads with it? WTF Amazon.

jokes on them, we shop there infrequently enough (2-3 times a year) that they give us prime for free every time we do. there was one short stretch (few months) about 10 years ago where we paid for it because we had a need for the shipping perk, but we haven't 'paid' for prime in a good 5-6 years and that was for a discounted 'trial'.

recently started another free month, so excuse me, while i go cue-up another movie. gotta use and abuse this one if the next one is gonna be polluted with ads--won't help that 'trial' experience and the conversion chance any next time, either.

Spicylem, (edited ) to news in Ron DeSantis Says He Has “Moved On” And Disney Should Drop Its Lawsuit Against Him

The headline is misleading. He’s saying they will lose and should just drop the lawsuit. He’s saying they can’t win against the state and that since their “skirmish” Disney hasn’t made a peep.

He’s bragging and still saying the same things. He raised the same points as before and has the same issues.

Edit: typo

OkToBeTakei,

he’s trying to Trump his way out of this, but after Dolt 45 just caught 14 more charges of “your’e fucked” today in Georgia (for a total of NINETY-TWO* charges across 4 state and federal indictments), perhaps that’s not such a great strategy.

*In New York, he faces 34 felony counts in connection with hush money payments to a porn star. In Florida, he faces 40 felony counts for hoarding classified documents and impeding efforts to retrieve them. In Washington, D.C., he faces four felony counts for his efforts to overturn the 2020 election.

You’ve almost verbatim repeated what is in the headline. The only part you didn’t repeat is, verbatim, a quote from Ron DeSantis. I’m lost as to what you find misleading.

Spicylem,

I suppose it’s interpretation. I did t read the headline as bragging or continuing with the same fight but rather a plea to get them to drop the case. Because he’s moved on. I feel like my explanation provides more context to that missing piece.

poppy,

I did read the OP title as Ron wanting to back down so your clarification helped at least one person. :)

Doesn’t matter if nobody’s watching, the digital ad buyers have no way of knowing.

I can’t wait for modern “film” to go under. Big movie studios haven’t been producing movies worth watching or remembering in a long time.

adam_y, to moviesandtv in Greta Gerwig Says She’s “Properly Scared” To Tackle Netflix ‘Narnia’ Films, Addresses Prospect Of Directing A ‘Bond’ Pic
@adam_y@lemmy.world avatar

Anyone else find it odd, that a director that makes wonderful, original films, tends to work on remaking properties that we’ve seen a hundred times before once they ‘make it’?

I get it it, but there is a decent BBC version of the Narnia stories and then there was a decent version in the 2000s and…

What next, another Robin Hood, another go at Pinnichio, this year’s retelling of Romeo and Juliet?

Tehgingey,

I feel like that’s a common trend in modern media, a lot of remakes and alternate versions of the same story. Like they are bringing back Harry Potter as a series, and they are doing a peter pan and Wendy thing as well. Seems like there aren’t a ton of original things that are getting these big budgets. Not saying there aren’t original things coming out, they don’t seem to be what the Hollywood “default” is at the moment

Entropy,

It’s because the big studios don’t want to take a risk on something new and original, they almost always want to go for the “safe” bet and pick a sequel, spinoff or remake of an established IP that they know will make money. All they care about is profit. Making flims as an art form is is a struggle for passionate directors. Take Guillermo del Toro for example, he said recently (and I’m paraphrasing) that he still gets a lot of push back from studios when he’s trying to get his projects of the ground. That’s because he’s an artist and art is a risk.

reddig33,

It’s the studios. They recycle properties, use big name stars, and then attach a known successful director because they think it’s more likely to be a “sure fire hit”. It frequently doesn’t work out that way, but I’m sure they have some computer formula that measures the odds for them.

Taking creative chances on unknowns is for indie studios.

Entropy,

Nail on the head my friend

reddig33,

I have read that sometimes the Star or director will negotiate a deal where they agree to do the derivative blockbuster/sequel/whatever in exchange for the studio backing their pet project. So in this case maybe Gerwig gets paid the big bucks to do a studio designed movie in exchange for studio backing for a more creative movie she really wants to do afterward.

So sad… so unbelievably saddened by this.

Stovetop, to movies in Jackie Chan, Ralph Macchio Set For New ‘Karate Kid’ Movie

I feel iffy on this. I loved the original Karate Kid growing up, but absolutely hated the 2010 remake. Partly because I feel like it is following the trend of just lumping every Asian character into a generic “Kung Fu Guy” stereotype with no room for nuance.

Like, in the original, Mr. Miyagi’s backstory as a Japanese war veteran was pretty significant to his character, and karate being a specifically Japanese fighting style made sense for him to teach.

Not to say you have to be Japanese to learn karate, but that wasn’t even the premise in the 2010 movie, where Mr. Miyagi was swapped out for the Chinese Mr. Han, and the discipline being learned is kung fu, not karate. But that doesn’t matter, does it? Because as far as the white people in the audience are concerned, there’s basically no difference. Asian is Asian, right?

(And being a movie made in cooperation with China Film Group, which is a propaganda arm of the Chinese government, they definitely couldn’t have Mr. Han also be a war veteran who regretted his years of service, because who could ever regret fighting for glorious communism?)

nevernevermore,

I never saw the Jaden smith film, but that’s a bad joke right? That it’s kung fu, not karate? How did they even think it appropriate to still call it karate??

CosmicTurtle,

I saw the Jaden Smith film and it’s…okay. But yeah…it’s not karate. It’s kung fu. They even say that in the movie.

Yet they still called it The Karate Kid.

canthidium,
@canthidium@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, it was fine but as an Asian American, the name bothered me. I dunno why they didn’t just call it “The Kung Fu Kid” and market it as a spiritual successor.

Stovetop,

I was going to write this almost verbatim in my comment above but cut it for length. 100% agree.

canthidium,
@canthidium@lemmy.world avatar

I love that we’re getting all this Asian cinema nowadays, but there’s still more to do. Like you said, lumping all Asians together still. And even still, a lot is all about being Asian. Say what you will about the Fast and Furious movies, but the character of Han is what we need more of. A character that just happens to be Asian, and his whole personality isn’t just “Asian dude”. He’s just a guy, and that’s awesome.

520,

It is explicitly kung fu. They say as much in the film.

They just called it The Karate Kid for brand recognition. It's not like they haven't abused the name before.

southsamurai,
@southsamurai@sh.itjust.works avatar

It is such a bad movie, too. Like, if they’re going to do that, you’d think it would be a great film, but nooooooo.
