Sylvartas,

How recent is that trend ? Because I definitely agree that modern movies’ mixing usually sucks ass for a non-theater setup, but I recently watched some 70’s James bond movie and it was actually much worse than what I’m used to. Like, if I setup the TV volume so the gunshots/explosion and the musics didn’t blow up my eardrums, dialogues were basically unintelligible 80% of the time

Ascending Through Nine Levels of DCC in Nine Weeks (glorbsladder.wordpress.com)

It was a bit stressful and confusing at times as new abilities were constantly being piled on, and maybe it was a mistake to choose a system like DCC. If I had it to do over again something simpler, with flatter curves and less wacky stuff injected might make for a smoother ride. But maybe the bumps along the way are what made...

The magic system definitely has its flaws but I disagree with the effects thing (well, maybe if you absolutely want to do everything by the book, but has that ever happened in any tabletop campaign ?).

One homebrew rule our DM has is that he allows us to “prepare” 1 spell. Basically you cast it in advance so you know the effects before you actually use it (clerics don’t get that rule because their spells are much more reliable). Which obviously helps a lot with the randomness. We started without that rule and definitely saw an improvement after that, because the mages can now use whatever spell they think applies best to the situation, knowing they have a backup spell that won’t fizzle out at the worst possible time

Outside of combat he generally makes spells effects a lot more “open” which also helps a lot.

Edit : also we usually don’t bother with the “physics stimulation” side of spells’ effects. For example, iirc the enchanted rope spell specifies a maximum weight and some other things. We never actually calculate that, the DM just goes “nah that’s too much” if he feels like it

Sylvartas,

Sylvartas,

IIRC Hindus didn’t have a “proper” 0, and Arabs did, which I guess is the reason why they got the credit

Sylvartas,

Yeah after some quick googling it looks like I’m wrong. I’m quite sure that’s what I was taught in school though, so blame my teacher !

Basically I was taught that Hindus invented the 0 for base-10 numerals, but didn’t actually use it for maths (e.g 0*x = 0), whereas Arab mathematicians did.

Sylvartas,

Also, even if you fully respect the specs, I assume you can’t get certified as “compliant” by ISO if you didn’t pay for the specs ?

Sylvartas,

The geology dorm at my university had one called “geology rocks”, always made me chuckle.

Sylvartas,

In this particular instance the journalists are doing their job. It was advertised as an MMO. They could change it to “so-called zombie MMO” or something, but that wouldn’t be as neutral as the current title.

Sylvartas,

If they manage to one-up iceborne and make this one even better I will die happy

Sylvartas,

About some other guy on MTV, according to Wikipedia

Sylvartas,

Tbh I’d be very surprised if wizards of the coast is not substantially bankrolling critical role at this point.

Sylvartas,

If you’re talking about the “good” Dr Martens I think you’re right. Last time I checked Solovair were the ones actually making the expensive “made in UK” Martens, and their own brand were slightly less pricy.

The vast majority of the new Martens you can find are cheaply made in Asia and are not very expensive though

Sylvartas,

This is why I loved my Casio 2D. It could use actual fractions to avoid these kind of issues

Sylvartas,

And Portugal is sitting pretty low at 5.1% even though it is depenalized here, while France is #1 with super strict laws and a lot of money going into their enforcement…

Sylvartas,

Americans

Sylvartas,

Yeah and if you went to France with that attitude, I bet you didn’t have a particularly bad time. (Paris is a little more complicated though, parisians have zero patience, especially with tourists, which does include french tourists)

Sylvartas,

Technically forbidden by law. However, say, a crucifix on a necklace, hidden under clothes, is in kind of a gray area. Also some exceptions apply to Alsace I think

Sylvartas,

TIL Tarkov players are rabbits

Sylvartas,

Say you’ve never been to Venice without saying you’ve never been to Venice.

It’s basically always overcrowded with tourists, it’s understandable that they would do something about it. All that traffic takes a toll on the streets that were already sinking even without said traffic. A 6€ fee to maintain them better is hardly a racket.

Sylvartas,

So, basically what the USSR did ? (IIRC, machine gunners and sharpshooters carrying some semi auto scoped rifle were basically interchangeable in their doctrine, at least during WW2)

Sylvartas,

His rants are often unintentionally funny. There’s a guy on YouTube editing his conspiracy rants to look like it’s a Warhammer 40k character talking about stuff that actually exists in the lore and it matches so well it’s hilarious.

Sylvartas, (edited )

I looked it up and there are actually several people doing this. This one gets me everytime

Edit: The one about chaos also gets an honorable mention because the hand popping out from the collar of the power armor just fucking sends me every time

Sylvartas,

I have not used it for a long time but it’s really easy to fuck the install and potentially your entire system, depending on the fuckup(s).

As a matter of fact, that is exactly why I used it the first time : since it’s a nice lightweight distro and it has some interesting gotchas regarding installation, our sysadmin teacher had us all install it and set it up before we could actually use our distro of choice

Sylvartas,

You have likely played several games using their engine though

Sylvartas,

Yeah, people may not know that the subway is safe because of engineering practices, but if there was a major malfunction, potentially involving injuries or loss of life, every other day, they would know, and I’m sure they would think twice about using it.

Sylvartas,

Implying they’re not passing on whatever that “costs” them to the studio…

Sylvartas,

They usually get it right when they do “tacticool” stuff too. But this shit feels like they’re trying way too hard to appeal to the Fortnite crowd

Sylvartas, (edited )

Most newer models that automatically make themselves available to all the devices connected to the network they are connected to, and manage the printer queue internally. Usually comes with a ton of shitty “features” e.g preventing you from printing black & white when you’re out of yellow ink.
2-in-one scanner+printer machines are especially heinous with this, most of the ones I’ve used block you from scanning a document if you’re out of any ink (yes, even when you’re only trying to scan and not use the “copy” mode)

Somehow they found a way to make me miss having to boot the “printer PC” and wrangling windows’ god awful printer queue system.

Sylvartas,

Also these people, who are so adamant in their beliefs that the State is out to get them (or will be in the near future) are almost always in favor of militarizing police and giving them more power in general, if not straight up pushing for it.

Persecution fetish indeed.

Sylvartas,

I don’t want to condone violence, but I feel like Spain knows a little too well what happens when we let fascists get comfy…

Sylvartas,

Yeah the correct term would be “commutative” as someone already pointed out. Meaning the order doesn’t matter when considering multiple percentages. E.g 50% of 73% of something is the same as 73% of 50% of that same thing

Sylvartas,

I feel like in the last few years, Japanese publishers have been atoning for a lot of their early-2000’s sins (except Square Enix and Konami who seem to have doubled down)

Sylvartas,

Sounds like there is a very easy solution to this : pay people more so they don’t have to take a second job ?

Sylvartas,

You draw sevens with a small bar in the middle because it looks better.

I draw sevens with a small bar in the middle because I have the handwriting of a goblin and my ones and sevens often look similar otherwise

We are not the same

Sylvartas,

Yeah it’s important for me because I have shit handwriting. I also draw zeroes with a bar in the middle because one of my college teachers used to subtract 1 point on tests for every zero with no bar.

We all hated that but tbh I’m glad I have that good practice ingrained in my brain now because I can’t accidentally mix up 0 and O

Sylvartas,

It’s ok to swear on the Internet

Sylvartas,

That’s true for some of them, but not all actors are A-listers

Sylvartas,

Anytime the DM lets me get a lot of money I try to spend most of it on bling. Or at least not minmax too much with it

Sylvartas,

Heh. I was just discussing this with a friend 2 days ago. We surmised that they would half ass it even more than MW2 because this one was already half assed and still sold well, and Battlefield, which is basically their only competitor, is in shambles right now (and was in a an even more sorry state around when they probably started working on MW3).

Sounds like we were mostly correct

Sylvartas,

Hell, as a “vanilla” destiny 2 veteran, last time I tried to check it out I had no idea where to go.

Sylvartas,

Heineken gets a lot of flak (at least in France) but imo it’s the best beer in the “almost too diluted to pass as actual beer” category

Sylvartas,

On big projects like this, the game director isn’t also the lead game designer. Or at least they shouldn’t. That’s the whole point of having these 2 positions in the first place

Sylvartas,

Yeah tbh the article doesn’t really help to determine how much he’s micromanaging but that’s basically where the issue lies. According to the example in the article it does sound like he’s stepping on the art director’s boundaries regarding creatures design though

Sylvartas,

I still don’t even dare to say it even when I’m alone in my car and singing along because I don’t want to slip if I ever sing it in public

Sylvartas,

One thing that really rubs me the wrong way nowadays is that South Park loves mocking people who want to change things, good or bad. Look at how they endlessly ridiculed Al Gore for being mostly right about climate change for example

Sylvartas,

It’s true that they’re less “facepalm-inducing” under the smarter videos, but any entertainment video with wide enough appeal is gonna be littered with comments that will make you feel like you’re having a stroke while reading them. It usually gets worse if the channel is more family friendly, I assume because the YouTube algorithm serves it to kids a lot more.

Sylvartas,

Idk I just went to a channel that I know for a fact only allows you to purchase the videos if you’re watching from France, but I was able to watch all the videos for free because they are not restricted outside of France. I think it’s supposed to work automatically if your piped instance has access to instances that are hosted in countries where the videos are unrestricted

So in your case it should work if you go through an instance that is hosted in the UK
