I know that probably has more to do with his life than mine, but it's hard not to take it personally and wonder if it's what everyone else is too polite to say.

Well, yeah. I agree beauty is a flawed, racist, social construct that is just societal opinions in bulk. But money is also a fake social construct that has very real affects on everyday life. We can deconstruct the term "beauty" all night, but that doesn't change the lived reality of being called ugly having a real, genuine, hurtful effect on my self esteem.

Laughs in sober asexual transexual

🤣 😂 🤣

I mean it's funny how little these peoole understand the issues they are so passionate to talk about.

how did you deal with internalised transphobia?

It’s something I’m really struggling with, thanks to it it feels like I’m obsessed with the idea of ‘passing’, like whenever I see other trans women who don’t pass it gives me a little burst of dread, thinking that it’s impossible to pass and I’d never be able to. That horrible fear of looking “like a man in a...

like whenever I see other trans women who don’t pass it gives me a little burst of dread

As a someone who does pass, these moments fill me with guilt and a degree of imposter syndrome as I wonder why I got to be lucky when I am no more valid than anyone else. And then that's more guilt as I then become self-conscious of something that I know so many people strive and yearn for. But these moments also prompt memories of my early days when I was absolutely not passing, and how fragile, scared and humiliated I felt.

Letting go of passing as a concept entirely is probably unrealistic for most of us, but when you have these moments of dread it's healthier to recognize your common fears, struggles and vulnerability. Don't let dread win, because you only ever notice 100% of the people you do notice. Some of us eventually live in stealth, and then have internalized intrusive thoughts from that as well.

In a sense I guess I'm saying the grass is always greener, so it's better to learn comradery with those that feel the same as you do, as opposed to using them as a yard stick for yourself. It's not something that will just click and fade away, but a consenious choice to be the kindness we all want to see in the world.

How often to you bail on a half-written post or response?

I have had a tendency since my earliest days on social media where I will get halfway or more through a response, and end up just cancelling it. Sometimes I feel like I’m just being to over the top with snark or otherwise don’t want to be that kind of person, but a lot of the time I’ll decide I just really don’t care...

About 20% I'd say. It used to be much higher, arounx80%, but pushing through the anexity of feeling like have nothing to contribute has helped improved my writing. Perhaps it's come with age, but I feel like it's much easier to make myself and my thought process understood by others. A younger me thought that logic and just "being correct" was enough to be persuasive, but that's just not how people work.

How do I cope with my father hating me?

My father, who convinced me (16 m) at the time to move in with him instead of my mother when they moved. All 3 of the other siblings stayed with my mother. He then kicked me out the week I turned 18, a week into my senior year. Since then he stays in touch only to speak with his grandchildren (now going on 4 kids). I have never...

Well, this sort of thing is honestly above any social media's pay grade, so I will only tell you what I did after talking with my therapist

I know how this feels and I'm sorry you are going through it too. After the only member of my family who was even remotely kind to me died (and even that was an abusive relationship), I cut off contact with everyone else related to me and my life has only improved. It's been about 6 years now but i am much happier for it, no judgement, no yelling, no control, life is just... quieter.

You can't control how others act, and your father has had several decades to reconsider. At a certain point, you should just protect your own well being and go no contact.

Being a part of your life is a privilege, not a right.

The privileged perspective of those that don't have their rights controlled by politics.

FoundTheVegan,
@FoundTheVegan@kbin.social avatar

Lol sure, but wealthy straight cis white men have always had full right to marry, arms, or vote. Every other group of people has had to argue for those freedoms, while others are considered the "default person".

Do trans people vote for someone that will allow them Healthcare or the one calling their existance pedophilia? That's not a choice, but it's a position many trans people are uniquely in. Just as black Americans had to argue for their freedom, to vote, to self protection. Just as women have to vote and own property. Just as queer folk have to marry.

Indifference to these situations means you're rights are so taken for granted that they will never be stripped away, so you are afforded the luxury of swing both parties the same

Holy shit. Orange is the new black is great and I like the show, but the biggest trigger warning in the world for trans femmes. There is some incredibly disturbing, and accurate depictions of trans hate crimes. :/

FoundTheVegan,

I've been rewatching Futurama and honestly there is a lot of jokes even in the first season that made me uncomfortable. Mostly sight gags of horribly depicted trans femmes played for laughs. I wouldn't call it a safe show.

Do it Liz! It'd hurt Trump more than Biden, which is probably her thought process anyways. Idk, what's the downside?

You must pick a point in human history before the 1950s to be spend the rest of your life in. What era and place would you choose?

You would still have the same age, gender, personality, skin color, etc. and you would be able to speak at least one local language and would know basic information of the era and place. Your family, social standing, and such would be randomly picked.

That means your literally half cooking your food, anything below the correct temp is generally doing nothing, so either you are messing up your final product unknowingly or realizing it's undercooked and having to leave it in the oven for longer to make up the difference.

It's not a time saver, it's just making bad food. What a weird self own.

Awww, I'm so happy for you Amelia! Happy and PROUD of you for working through your emotions and exploring what truly makes you happy!

So what should your newest girl buy herself to celebrate

  • Nail polish! If we are starting with first things first, then do something that will make you feel from your point of view. We spend our entire lives looking at our hands! Rings and jewelry for the same reason. The beauty of this is that it all comes off depending on where you are or how "out" you are going to be with people.
  • Liquid eyeliner and some basic "nude" eyeshadow pallets are also a great thing to start playing around with. Don't get discouraged if it at first things don't turn out the way you hope, just keep in mind that girls in middile school also have crappy makeup because they are using it for the first time too, it's just a pure pratice thing. Start with aiming for a good cat eye, there are tools and stencils to make it easier. Most cashiers and strangers in the world look you in the eye initially, so if you can femme it up that will go a looooong ways to help with people understanding how you want to be treated.
  • To this end, if you can work up the courage to go a eyebrow place you'd be honestly shocked how much your face can change with a good arched brow. Doesn't matter if you boy mode there, they won't ask questions nor care, but they are also professionals so they will also know what you mean if you ask for a more "feminine look".
  • Lastly, find some other trans women IRL, look around your area for a support group. These ladies will have so much more experince in your area, while also understanding completely where you are coming from. Online friends are great, but IRL ones are life savers! Now that you understand your dysphoria, it can sometimes get worse as your mind now knows exactly what to focus on, get some girlfriends to bitch about it with over drinks. I promise it's a game changer!

I hope this helps! I remember my eye cracking as a scary confusing time too, but happier days of clarity are ahead! You did the hard part already, defeating the transphobe in your own head is always the first and hardest obstacles.

Once again, I'M SO PROUD OF YOU for getting to the end of these emotions instead of just repressing. Let us know when you have questions! ♥ 💕

100% with ya, the double standards are kinda crazy. The differnce between the first two panels is pretty stark in regards to the kid, even if the point is essentially the same.

My take is that male bodies need to exposed in order to be sexualized so they read vulnerable, but female bodies are can be read as sexualized and vulnerable regardless how they are presented. But that doesn't really explain panel 4 & 6.

Weird choices. If anyone knows who the artist is, I'd be curious how they would talk about this.

Photo shopped my old insurance card with a new date to trick the judge into thinking that the ticket I got for driving without insurance was invalid. Saved me $600.

Hey, nerdheads, what's a good book you've read recently?

I’m making my way through the Strugastky brothers’ works, found out about them through roadside picnic but i just finished “Monday starts on Saturday” and enjoyed it just as much. Edit to add: it’s a science fiction novel from the perspective of a soviet programmer who stumbles into magic. He meets a lot of people for...

FoundTheVegan,
@FoundTheVegan@kbin.social avatar

Just finished The Lathe of Heaven by Ursula K LA Guin, which was absolutely fantastic but so is all her books. Techincally Sci-fi but only in the loosest sense to describe sociology and the narcissism involved in thinking one person can "fix the world".

Highly recommend.

People who read marketing emails, where do you find the time to do so? And why?

I assume there are people who read these things, otherwise companies wouldn’t send me so many of them. I seem to get daily spam from literally any company I’ve ever interacted with in any way, and they are long boys full of text and pictures that Thunderbird helpfully hides from me but I presume are full of jagged brightly...

FoundTheVegan,
@FoundTheVegan@kbin.social avatar

Not quite emails, but its the same idea....

My mother will walk all around the house with her phone blaring some 30+ minute tiktok ad. She is fully aware that it is an ad, but something at the start promised an answer to .... something... and now she HAS to know what it is. She complains about having to wait so long to get to the end and calls everything in the middle nonsense, and the answer she always gets is "buy thing X" but.... she does it anyways. A lot. She isn't super interested in actually watching documentary since that requires paying attention, and with this she can just set it to the side while washing dishes or something.

We've given up on telling her that ads exist to sell things, she views them as "mini biased documentaries" which... I suppose is sorta accurate. But it still confuses the hell out of me.

I've heard from an optometrist that Amazon paperlites solve the eye strain issue. Specfically asking "Why do you hate your eyes?" when I told him I read via a tablet.

The only downside is giving Amazon money...

FoundTheVegan,
@FoundTheVegan@kbin.social avatar

I really don't see the appeal of paperbooks anymore. Ebooks are infintly more practical. Lightweight and easily fillable with endless content. Why would I ever want to lug around a single novel when I can just slide my entire library in my purse?

FoundTheVegan,
@FoundTheVegan@kbin.social avatar

This is very much a good thing. It's a bit of a trope at this point that saying "trans" makes people assume "Male-to-Female". You'll find no shortage of trans mascs complaining about the erasure. Let 'em have the spotlight for once.

FoundTheVegan,
@FoundTheVegan@kbin.social avatar

It's amazing that so many trans people experience homelessness when they also live rent free in bigots head.

Americans of Lemmy, what is your approach to next year's election?

2020 was… truly unique. It was so hard to stay away from doom scrolling, and I (and many others) were pretty disillusioned by the sad fact that so much of our country legitimately supported the Orange Man. I didn’t get a wink of sleep the night of the election because I genuinely considered it to be a make or break decision...

FoundTheVegan,
@FoundTheVegan@kbin.social avatar

It's not a question of policy. Republicans literally killed people last election trying to overthrow democracy.

Not that I even like democrats, but anyone who votes red after Jan 6th is fundamentally an enemy of democracy.

How dare you be upset when you are insulted!

FoundTheVegan, (edited )
@FoundTheVegan@kbin.social avatar

Because it's a very silly question, one that I'm not going to entertain because...

Do you really think this person is out renting a steam roller? And trying to find the street address of that person now?!

You are steching so hard to call this a violent threat when it could not be more silly. You're not motivated by "preventing violence", because the entire premise here is ridiculous at face value. You're motivated by wanting to call trans people unstable.

Go tell your friends, your boss, your family you stopped someone from getting killed by a steam roller by saying "tut tut, ur crazy" on the internet. You know damn well they are gonna laugh at you.

This is a conversation about attraction. Self-esteem in this context means body-image.

It absolutely is not, but you are reducing it to that. Read what OP is saying, she is looking for a relationship but is having trouble iniaiting. I mean come on, she calls herself beautiful, yet somehow you read shy as body image thing? That's just looking skin deep.

FoundTheVegan,
@FoundTheVegan@kbin.social avatar

Oh sure! I'm taking 150 mg Setraline, which is a generic brand of Zoloft. I did have insurance troubles a few months back and ran out, which wasn't fun but no pain. I just got to show my new girlfriend how anxious,
catastrophizing and lethargic I was before we met.🙄🎉

I also use Mirtazapine to help me sleep, (because at night is when I rue and obsess over problems) and take Hydroxyzine as needed when I am feeling anxious. The only side effect I have is that most tend to make me sleepy, BUT since I permanently exist with coffee in my hand it's manageable.

I do feel for ya thou, I'm the lucky one in my family. Both my sisters took a year or two to find medication that works for them and Serta was only my second. And a old old old GF did have a sertonine crash when she trying meds. It's often a tough journey, but I can say that all 4 of us are doing much better overall once we found the right meds. I hope this helps!
