I don’t think I can really fault any Android developer for wanting to use Firebase and be done with it, because it’s just so simple to implement, and generally easy to work with.

But some things should be more important than comfort, shouldn’t they.

I mean, it was kinda expected and inevitable that one big service was going to reign supreme. Lots of things make push notification a real hassle, like you describe. Speaking for Android as I don’t know much about iOS, Firebase works incredibly well, it’s a super elegant solution, and if Google wasn’t such a shitshow, I’d love it.

But it is a shitshow, in so many ways. So some services encrypt the contents, some don’t send them over those servers in the first place, but the remaining metadata is still shockingly useful for surveillance purposes.

I don’t really know where I’m going with this comment, but as an EU resident, I’d just like to see alternative systems getting more attention.

Idk, it’s just that so many people hear news like this and go: „It is what it is, can’t change it“

Yeah, the size dictates what’s possible and what isn’t, and that’s absolutely fair.

But hey, this is just a first trailer, so we shouldn’t really make any assumptions, good or bad. Let’s just wait and see.

What phone do you sugest for your grandparents?

I got a task to buy a smart phone for my grandparents, they are not techsavy but they know how to use basic functions. Iam looking for an andoid because it has language pack i need. I dont need it to have lots of functions, onley a good camera and a big screen. Bonus points if it can be flashed with some kind of simplefied...

Signal does in fact distribute an APK that isn’t dependant on Play Services/FCM on their website. Uses a websocket, so not the most elegant way I guess, but oh well.

It’s rather hidden, which I think is disappointing. But it exists. Updates itself, too.

What users often do not realize is that almost all such notifications travel over Google and Apple’s servers.

So on the Android side, is an app safe from this if it doesn’t rely on Firebase Cloud Messaging?

What is your stance on being able to give encryption keys to a third party without the other participants of a chat consenting, let alone knowing about it?

If someone in my contacts used bridges, effectively breaking e2ee, I’d want to know about it.

Ideally, people should not be allowed to do that without informing their contacts, at the very least.

Idk, the Garmin Connect App is also not great in terms of privacy. And so far, only one Garmin product works with Gadgetbridge

True, I’ve just checked up on that. The devices themselves don’t do anything creepy, but the app contains a few trackers according to Exodus Privacy, which is not ideal if you want to use everything to its full extent

I just managed to do a proper pullup this year, I’d be kinda sad to see it go again, not gonna lie.

Though pulling up my mood by seeing myself instead of some dude in the mirror is more important by far. But hey, apparently bodyfat redistribution also means less fat goes to the belly.

Maybe I’ll finally be able to see my abs, they’ve been hiding from me my entire life

Here’s hoping that becoming who I really am will also help with gym motivation, because that is certainly lacking rn.

On that note, I should learn to weld, so I can expand my home equipment. A barbell rack would be a godsend

I’m not going to lie, it is a bit scary to think about it. Getting the diagnosis from a therapist, with which I can then get the prescription for hrt, that I will have to take to an endocrinologist who will have to check what’s best for me and my body…

Whatever the procedure is in your country, it’s a big step to take, and it’s perfectly okay to be afraid. We’re only human, after all^^

But god damn, are hormones fascinating :D
So much about our body and mind is regulated by hormones, it’s incredible what they do for us, every single day :D

Raytracing is genuinely cool as hell, but Nvidia needs to stop being a dumb cunt about it

Just tells you how many tricks have been developed to make rasterization look as good as it does. Fascinating, really. It’s always interesting to see how people work around a limitation.

The thing with real-time raytracing and pathtracing is that instead of being a workaround, it removes the limitation entirely, which is damn cool.

Just need faster hardware still, which will take at least another decade with how Nvidia keeps milking the smallest improvements gen after gen.

Frame interpolation is still a weird one to me.

Like, with how the latency is obviously still tied to the base framerate, and the fact that lower framerates mean less information to calculate good interpolated frames from…

Basically, the tech is at its worst for low-end hardware that needs it the most. (Which is probably why they chose to restrict it to new models, now that I think about it)

A 4090 owner turning on DLSS3 is kinda like a dental surgeon getting a third car for their birthday.

Upscaling has come a long way though, and the anti-aliasing they use in DLSS is so good, they’ve released it as a standalone feature. That I can appreciate, anything is better than what some games do with TAA.

Don’t even get me started on adaptive sync. New Gsync monitors are finally capable to run VRR with AMD gpus now. Why do they bother still making them, then?

Imagine if handheld gaming is all they’ve ever used it and known it for, and all of a sudden you show them than it can be a full desktop experience, too

They might not know know, but there sure can be a lot of meta data one can use to determine that a person goes to school, where it might be, and what school it most likely is.

Or someone else straight up posted the information publicly. That’s always a possibility you have to consider.

Either way, isolating certain websites and services from each other and/or the rest is certainly a good practice to limit what they can gather about you. If you don’t do that already, that is.

Pretty much all the basic tools are named after and have icons looking like the original, physical tools used back in the analog days of photography, and also painting and printing in general.

Brush, pen and scissors being the obvious ones, masking should also be fairly self-explanatory. But then there’s also stuff like dodging and burning, which is a technique used in the darkroom to increase or decrease exposure of specific parts of the physical image, and a lot more I have to look up the english names for first
