Simplicity of design. Rust is built cleverly. It has lots of features and there are also tons of clever ways to solve a problem. Odin is quite simple and although not entirely minimalistic, it is written in a very clear way when approaching a problem. The borrow checker in rust in one thing I would call clever. It takes time to get used and although can be quite useful for safety it is too clever.
Pubnixes. Or more specifically the tildeverse. I thought these things were long gone but no, there is still a community of passionate computer nerds sharing common servers and colloborating in the community.
Usenet archives on telehack.com. Its like a time capsule. I get to read all these interesting posts from the arpanet as if it was still up today. If you browse long enough you suddenly be surprised to find some famous person’s casual post about whatever topic was on their mind at the time. Like I found one of ken thompson’s post on the world chess championship match.
Not saying its new. Just was surprised. They probably don’t make much from it. Why put it in for a couple pennies (on a corporate level). I didn’t think they were that greedy. I honestly hadn’t seen this before because I rarely use gmail and have never used the promotions tab.
I don’t spend very much time on here I average 5 hours a week but it is still bad for me. I never feel satisfied afterwards and for some reason still come back. I was thinking it would be better to cut it off entirely as it is a bad influence and just have IRC as my main way of chatting with other humans. I think IRC is a bit healthier because it is a direct interaction and there is no upvotes or any fake internet points involved.
Well I want to be part of the decentralized web. I think it is very cool to be free of corporations. Just was wondering if there was a point in all of this. Of course the fediverse is better than centralized solutions but I don’t know if there is even a point in trying to build these platforms as they are just a way to waste time. Although it might be a good idea to keep but just never scroll and only use to ask for help, opinions or just to share what is on your mind. It is a useful tool just not what it is mainly used for.
Good luck telling multi billion dollar companies to give up their datasets. All you can manage to accomplish is pull up the ladder on newer startups and secure their monopoly. A better solution might be to make AI accessible and free (like llama) so that small artists can take advantage of it and not all the big wigs make all the money. AI is perfectly good tool to speed up artist efficiency.
Well its a good thing AI works can’t be copyrighted then. I don’t see how this is a a huge problem. Yes its bad to steal but its only stealing when you are making profit off of someone else’s labour. Having these companies have the datasets is the problem not AI but it is not possible to convince them to give it up. You can ban and try to prevent scraping all you want but it won’t stop the companies from using the datasets they already have. Regulation banning profiteering off AI work from datasets gathered without artist consent would be a start but it is hard to enforce. I think we are on the same side here so we don’t really need continue. Have a great day.
Well by definition most of us aren’t artists. Artists are a small minority. It would be pretty easy to guess who isn’t an artist by just claiming everyone isn’t except for the people explicitly say they are and it would be like 98 percent true.
So, I learned in physics class at school in the UK that the value of acceleration due to gravity is a constant called g and that it was 9.81m/s^2. I knew that this value is not a true constant as it is affected by terrain and location. However I didn’t know that it can be so significantly different as to be 9.776 m/s^2 in...
Nowadays I find a lot of games feel like too much work and/or anxiety when I just want to relax for like, 30 minutes to an hour after a long day. On the other hand, the games specifically designed to help you unwind just feel boring imo....
Unless it is a very hot day you don’t really notice it. I sometimes put it on when I feel like I might sweat throughout the day but it isn’t really necessary and no one really cares.
C++ people still change. Normal people update their version when new ones come out and adapt their pratices to “Modern Idiomatic C++”. While a ton of C developers have been using C89 since the 90s.
(Jokes aside, schools all of a sudden after covid stop giving “homework” now we call “overdue schoolwork” which means the same thing but you are giving just enough time in class so that if actually did it rather than fooling around you get it done pretty fast and are free the rest of the day.)
In the younger grades they would assign textbook pages at the end of the day. So you didn’t really know what to do until after class. I am glad they just post everyhting online at the start of class now.
Maybe try checking to see if you can get battery level from upower? Mught just be an issue with the GUI. upower -i /org/freedesktop/UPower/devices/battery_BAT0. The next step after that is using acpi calls and seeing if those are working properly. If you enter the command into the terminal you can find the line that says percentage.
Ran yay in the background (forgot about it) and then a few minutes later closed my computer because I was all of a sudden at 100% cpu usage and I didn’t know what process was causing it and the easiest way to kill it would be too shut down the machine. I probably should’ve just opened btop and killed it but I was too lazy. I ended not being able to boot my computer for a few days untul some nice lemmy folk walked my through my first chroot rescue. It was a educational experience. Next time someone makes the same mistake I can help them out.
