lapislazuli,

You can sell it for more, because it has never been opened and is thus brand new. Stånks.

lapislazuli,

Use your powers wisely, you must

Where is this? (Sorry, I’m an European, on the edge of the map)

lapislazuli,

I don’t understand. The person across the aisle has fish on their plate. Couldn’t they just share?

lapislazuli,

Hmm, I see.

lapislazuli, (edited )

You’ve still got some miles left in you, don’t give up! Unless they’re green, then you’re screwed.

lapislazuli,

No worries, you can hammer the dents out.

lapislazuli,

You have no idea what they are put through…or rather, what’s put into them.

Meta Confirm Charging EU Users For Ad-Free Access to FB and Insta (alternativeto.net)

Meta has officially confirmed its decision to introduce a subscription plan for ad-free access to Instagram and Facebook for users in the European Union, EEA, and Switzerland. This move comes a few weeks after Meta first considered the idea, amidst regulatory pressure from the EU regarding the company’s ad targeting and data...

lapislazuli,

Nice move Meta, you just cemented my decision to leave Facebook / Meta for good. Thanks!

lapislazuli,

Hah, yeah. Like others, I already use uBlock, and I don’t really use Facebook any more. On the other hand, I’m worried about the social implications of not using FB and Messenger. I’ve been planning to move to secure messaging apps, but it almost feels like you’re not a human if you don’t have FB. In that regard, I found switching my email provider easier. But I’ll remove my account eventually, more likely sooner than later.

lapislazuli,

I’m just adding an additional source, because I just recently read about this way of using the forward slash to create abbreviations. English Language & Usage has a good post on Stackexchange. Wikipedia says they are used for “two-letter initialisms” (a type of abbreviation). Wikipedia also provides some more examples, see here.

“Rwy’n hoffi chi. Dych chi eisiau mynd i’r caffi gyda mi am baned o goffi?”

=

“I like you. Do you want to go to the café with me to have a cup of coffee?”

I’m still learning Welsh, so this might contain mistakes, but it’s better than saying you don’t understand her… For future reference, you know.

Edit: Meant to reply to the comment below me.

I can’t be arsed to write the pronunciation in IPA. Just go on Google Translate to hear how it’s pronounced or learn Welsh on Duolingo.

Da iawn, rwyt ti’n gallu siarad / ysgrifennu Cymraeg nawr / rŵan! :)

lapislazuli,

You’ll need long eyeballs to use them, though.

lapislazuli,

Top left, blinds down, is obviously a vampire.

lapislazuli,

Okay, I might give PeerTube another try.

lapislazuli,

I found peertube.io which has an unlimited upload quota… I think?

lapislazuli,

Thanks for the idea. I tried Handbrake to decrease the video quality and it seemed to work well. Also, getting rid of audio also gets rid of a big chunk of data, decreasing the file size.

Alternative app to Google Translate for translating text from images?

Are there any FOSS phone apps/ private alternatives for Google Translate for translating text from images? Or maybe a privacy-friendly alternative front-end for GT? The ability to translate from images (such as product labels in a store) is the main feature I’m looking for. TIA for any and all tips.

lapislazuli,

Thanks for this. I’m looking for a phone app, sorry for not specifying that. I run stock Android so using GT might be the least of my privacy concerns, though… I can’t make the switch to a de-googled phone (Pixel and GrapheneOS) yet because money. Technically I could try LineageOS, but I’m afraid of bricking my phone.

lapislazuli,

Thank you, looks promising!

lapislazuli,

Thank you. I’ve tried it on desktop and I like it. I’m looking for a phone app for this use case (such as translating product labels when shopping).

I don’t know if this is alternative, but Faye Wong’s cover of The Cranberries’ “Dream” called 掙脫 from her album https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sky_(Faye_Wong_album). Released in 1994, same as me. The first one is the Mandarin version, this is the Cantonese version. She is a native Mandarin speaker. PS. I don’t speak Chinese despite the courses I took. 😅

lapislazuli,

TIL that there is such a thing as the right STD

lapislazuli,

I keep seeing references to RICO in The Sopranos. Was too lazy to google. Makes a lot of sense now, reading these explanations.

lapislazuli,

It’s there to piss you off.

lapislazuli,

Well damn it, I’m in love. Thanks a lot…

YSK: You can still see recommendations feed in Youtube with History turned off

Why YSK: There is a recent update in Youtube that force user to turn on history to see videos in recommendation/home tab. You can get over it by turning the history version ON and then watch a video and make sure it’s shown in the History tab. And now you can turn off the History and you will still see the recommendations/home...

lapislazuli,

Joke’s on them, I don’t want Youtube recommendations anyway. I just search for the stuff I want and subscribe to the channels I like. Besides, I’ve made my Youtube front page blank with CSS to avoid all the spam.

lapislazuli,

I don’t know but you’re better off using MusicBee anyway.

lapislazuli,

Ok. I can see the pic here as well.

lapislazuli,

I had no idea it was such an old band (it was formed in 1999). I had only heard a couple of their newer songs, “Nineteen” and “Love They Say”. I gotta listen to their first album!

lapislazuli,

Can someone enlighten me as to why this is called Heathcliff without Heathcliff? Is this a Lemmy joke or what’s going on? I’ve not read this comics (although I don’t read comics very often in general, but I used to, on GoComics).

lapislazuli,

Thanks!

lapislazuli,

Thanks for the reply, I didn’t realize you made these.

Using stock Android w/o Google account/ Play Store worth it?

I hope this is not considered a low-effort post, but I wanted to ask if using stock Android without signing in to your Google account/ using Play Store is worth it. It should be more private, right? I’m planning on buying the cheapest Samsung phone there is (probably the A14). I currently have a stock Android Oneplus phone. I...

lapislazuli,

Congrats, I hope it stays fixed! I can’t repair anything, but I support the movement in principle. I usually try to take good care of the things I own and buy things which with replaceable parts (think headphones) or things which are more ecological (think traditional wet shaving with a DE razor). Actually, come to think of it, I might try to repair my headphones. Something that can’t be replaced broke – part of the headband near the ear cups but I think I can fix it with tape.

lapislazuli,

Promoting a tool into a hobby is a succinct way to put it. Something I’m guilty of, nonetheless…
