el_abuelo,

When you say they’re born with the “wrong sex” do you mean they have chromosomes commonly associated with one gender, but have the genitalia of another?

I’m sensitive to hurting people’s feelings on this issue so just stear clear of ever asking questions or stating opinion on it - plus I’m hardly qualified for the latter. Sadly the side effect of this is that I am completely ignorant. Even more sad: I’d rather be ignorant than a pariah. Too many people getting ostracised for being ignorant.

el_abuelo,

Yeah good point I forgot about those…such a damn shame because it also makes it really hard for the honestly ignorant because it’s like “no stfu I actually need to know this!”

el_abuelo,

I’m also in the market for new headphones! Wireless. I currently have a pair for gaming and a pair for music/travelling. It’s critical the travelling pair have outrageously good sound cancelling. Both must have a mic. Unlimited budget.

Have at thee!

el_abuelo,

Awesome thanks for the write up! The headphones I’m replacing are XM3 but I’ve had them over 5 years now I think and they’re showing their age (just aesthetically as the cushions are starting to crack, and flaking isn’t far away imo) so I suspect I’ll go for the XM5 as I’ve been really happy with these.

For gaming I think I’ll stick with steelseries (assuming they still have a model that does replaceable batteries) as I always forget to charge stuff so the base station charging the spare has been awesome.

Thanks again!

el_abuelo,

Arguing about what people mean is futile. The point the other poster is making, and you’ve now agreed to be true, is that FOSS is software and a service is a service.

Most services powered by FOSS offer a free service as a taster for the paid service. The money made in the paid service tiers pay for the free tiers. Hopefully.

What would you use in place of cars?

Obviously just outlawing cars tomorrow would cause mass deaths around the world as society isn’t equipped to deal with it, so what could we transition to?

My assumption is that you’d suggest public transport for all? But that wouldn’t save us, as only about 1/4 of transport emissions come from cars, it’d just make us die a little slower.

Edit: if the next 5 people to downvote this could leave a reply it’d be appreciated. I try my best to do my bit for the environment but I depend on my car to participate in my local community given, and so I’d like to know what the ideal solution is? What should I be asking my representative to be voting for?

el_abuelo,

My comment wasn’t meant to suggest someone was making that argument - I was just setting the premise for my question.

I dont know why my genuine curiosity has triggered so many people…I was hoping for some rational suggestions that I could incorporate into my lifestyle.

As for going back to what it was like 70 years ago…I find it unlikely. There are a lot more people on the planet than there were back then and prosperity is broadly increasing…in reality we’ll transition to more sustainable and healthy living which I think entails better urban planning and greater government action on pollution.

el_abuelo,

Thank you. The reading comprehension on this thread has been worrying…

el_abuelo,

That’s not what I said, it isn’t 25% of all emissions, and I didn’t say it wasn’t worth it. I pointed out that the deaths from lack of cars without a plan would outweigh the lives saved by removing cars.

It absolutely is worth finding a way to remove cars in their current form. There are also far more effective things we can do, like eat less meat.

el_abuelo,

Suicide? It doesn’t take courage to do that, it takes courage to live on.

Please seek help if you are considering suicide - you’ve got nothing to lose and everything to gain by living.

el_abuelo,

I don’t know you, your life or your struggles and I’m not qualified to offer any kind of professional help or input, so please- spend the energy you’re spending on Lemmy on seeking help from someone who loves you, a suicide prevention charity or a professional who can help with these thoughts. Worst case scenario - nothing changes and you’ve lost nothing. Best case; things change and you have a happy life.

What little I do know of you: you have access to the Internet, you know at least a little bit of technology, and you speak English. These things alone mean you probably live a better life than billions of other people. Perhaps all you need is a little bit of perspective.

el_abuelo,

Really? The 1500 people that Hamas killed in the attack were 80% soldiers? Or is that stat over the last few decades of conflict?

el_abuelo,

Yeah you’re right I don’t know what I was smoking when I wrote that.

YouTube does implement DRM for its subscription content apparently as well.

el_abuelo,

Said the lemmygrad user without a shred of irony.

el_abuelo,

ITT: offended lennygrad and hexbear users giving good examples to answer the OP

el_abuelo,

This was true of IE too.

All of this has happened before, and will happen again.

Israeli army executes an elderly Palestinian after using him in propaganda campaign about its ‘safe corridor’ in Gaza (euromedmonitor.org)

Geneva – The Israeli army’s execution of an elderly Palestinian after using him in a propaganda campaign promoting its “safe corridor” in Gaza was strongly condemned in a statement released by Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor today....

el_abuelo,

That walking stick looks fucking dangerous.

el_abuelo,

TOR browser and a decent VPN.

Personally use Nord VPN but guessing from how infrequently it gets recommend by folks on lemmy I’m guessing it’s not the best.

el_abuelo,

And the low cost of candles. Those were the days.

el_abuelo,

Wild to me how many replies you’re getting that defend North Korea. A failed state that has a starving population with no freedoms and is completely ostracised from most of the world. By choice.

el_abuelo,

I’m not going to engage with someone who resorts to ad hominem attacks.

el_abuelo,

You live in ignorance and seek to maintain that ignorance in other people

Quite literally the definition of argumentum ad hominem. Attacking my character as well as my motivations, neither of which are the subject of the discussion and are only being used in a fallacious way in an attempt to cement their argument. Their follow-up just demonstrates why it’s not worth the time to engage with someone who makes such fallacious bad faith arguments.

The preceding paragraphs were attacking my argument and would have made an interesting argument otherwise.

el_abuelo,

You okay?

el_abuelo,

Starting a new business is hard enough as it is - please do not complicated it by adding in something that brings limited tangible benefits to the company, whilst making it unnecessarily harder than what it will be anyway.

Either get fluent now, and then start your business - or start your business with Windows and move on when you’re profitable and can afford the reduction in productively while you learn the ropes.

Do not go anywhere near MacOS - you can’t afford it.

Can an average person who works a full time job become capable enough to rival a secret agent like James Bond or John Wick on their own ?

If so what kind of training they would have to go through ? By training I mean the spatial and situational awareness, combat skills (this is kinda unrealistic), enough knowledge to turn any situation to their advantage etc....

el_abuelo,

You are referring to “The Office”

The US Version of “The Office” is the clone, so please do not denigrate the classic.

Note: I prefer the US version. This is not a comment on which one is preferred or better.

Firefox Got Faster for Real Users in 2023 (hacks.mozilla.org)

In order to measure the user experience, Firefox collects a wide range of anonymized timing metrics related to page load, responsiveness, startup and other aspects of browser performance. Collecting data while holding ourselves to the highest standards of privacy can be challenging. For example, because we rely on aggregated...

el_abuelo,

“Gave up on” and “tracking for 2 years now” in the same sentence…you’re sending mixed messages.

el_abuelo,

I assumed he wouldn’t get in the first time. I really hope people don’t make that mistake in 2024. Voter turnout should be through the roof - because if there’s one thing the republicans hate more than the Democrats, it’s a high turnout.

el_abuelo,

One of the world’s richest countries, minimum wage, NHS, low unemployment, few natural disasters, low murder rate, diverse cultural heritage…need I go on?

el_abuelo,

What problem?

el_abuelo,

I’m not sure I understand your point? Are you saying that if things were different, then things would be different? I can’t argue with that.

el_abuelo,

You say that like knowing one’s history is a bad thing. I imagine wherever you are from is equally as “obsessed” about its history.

For instance, aren’t Americans taught about their past presidents? And most of them had significantly less impact than most of Britain’s monarchs.

el_abuelo,

Which countries are you culturally aware of enough to know that to be the case?

The US has mount Rushmore and the Licoln Memorial as an example of a counter point.

I think most countries have images of their old leaders in a similar way to how UK has it. But I’m curious to know where this is not true.

el_abuelo,

Source? Sounds like nonsense to me.

el_abuelo,

You’re right, but sometimes a bit of undue courtesy repays in dividends. Not every minor infraction is nefarious and not every minor infraction deserves reporting. A simple courteous reminder of their obligations may save both parties some undue hassle.

I can imagine this company doing this to ensure only authenticated users can have their data removed. There are other ways…but this was probably what they considered reasonable and painless for all, admittedly they (wrongly) didn’t consider the audience of this community in that decision.

el_abuelo,

How do you know this?

My first thought was “they probably want to ensure they are who they say they are and so want an authenticated request” - while that’s against GDPR, not everyone is as educated as they should be, and not every mistake is a nefarious activity.

el_abuelo,

Why would you be using JS in this scenario?

el_abuelo,

Something has gone horribly wrong if you’re trying to do such optimisations when you’ve already chosen JavaScript…let alone Electron.

el_abuelo,

Thankfully the only interaction I have with teams is when a supplier arranges the call. Once every two weeks. It grosses me out every time…and that’s the Web app.

Do you really think they have done such optimisation efforts as minimising function calls? I can’t imagine it’s required for what is actually a fairly simple frontend app. The complexity is the enabling stack on the backend.

Chinese programmer ordered to pay 1m yuan for using virtual private network (www.theguardian.com)

A programmer in northern China has been ordered to pay more than 1 million yuan to the authorities for using a virtual private network (VPN), in what is thought to be the most severe individual financial penalty ever issued for circumventing China’s “great firewall.” The programmer, surnamed Ma, was issued with a penalty...

el_abuelo, (edited )

Isn’t it illegal because he used a VPN? Seems like semantics.

el_abuelo,

It is well known that as soon as you document a setup procedure, it is out of date and needs redocumenting.

el_abuelo,

Have you experienced any downsides to using pi hole? Does anything stop working?

Proton services discussion

I’ll start off by saying everyone’s economic situations are just as varied as their threat models and how people make decisions on which services can be specific to themself and not one that can apply to anyone else. The services one chooses to use for free or to pay for may be based more on what they can afford vs what’s...

el_abuelo,

Could you namedrop some, for the curious amongst us?

el_abuelo,

Thanks - I’ll check them out. On the lookout for a decent alternative to Google workspaces…the problem is - they’re stuff works really well especially within its ecosystem.

What are some FOSS programs that you think are a far better user experience than their counterparts? (sh.itjust.works)

I used Plex for my home media for almost a year, then it stopped playing nice for reasons I gave up on diagnosing. While looking at alternatives, I found Jellyfin which is much more responsive, IMO, and the UI is much nicer as well....

el_abuelo,

Seconded. I tried Plex, Emby and Jellyfin and found Emby was the sweetshop between GUI niceness and not swamped with shit features I don’t want or need. Jellyfish while being great and free, does not have the same UI polish as Emby, so I stumped up for a lifetime sub.

el_abuelo,

In the EU we like to pay a living wage and tip. That way we know that no one is getting fucked (any more than usual) and the good service staff are getting rewarded for going above and beyond.
