dynamojoe,

There would be a power vacuum, probably a few murders/suicides/defenstrations, and the elections scheduled for a few months from now will probably be postponed during the struggle for leadership of the country. My guess is the powers that eventually take over will agree to pull out of Ukraine, conduct a few show trials, and do whatever else they think they have to in order for the west to lift the sanctions and unlock the oligarch’s accounts.

It would please me greatly to know that Ukraine will outlive Putin.

dynamojoe,

I had a '56 chevy pickup that I got running in high school and had to sell when moving away to college. It was a quilt of parts that would fit (still the original 235 under the hood) but there was no way I was going to move to a big city with no AC, no power steering, three on the tree and all the safety features of a midcentury crumple zone with tires. I miss it tho.

dynamojoe,

The best way to handle it is not to. Don’t agree or disagree, don’t discuss, don’t offer suggestions or commiserate. Your responsibility is for you to get through the workday. Your job is your job, which I assume is not to be A’s sounding board or to hound B for slacking. If A keeps bitching about B, ask A not to. If A asks you why, be honest and say that the constant complaining is stressing you out and you’re not the proper outlet for this. If B needs to pick up the pace, that’s for her manager to deal with.

in all cases, be professional.

What's your favorite compilation album?

I’ve been really enjoying the Red Hot Organization’s “No Alternative” and “Dark was the Night” recently, both because they raised a lot of money for AIDS research and because they do a great job of capturing the 90s alternative sound and 00s indie sound respectively, and it’s got me thinking how much I love...

dynamojoe,

For classic rock, the Dazed and Confused soundtracks are phenomenal. I’m also partial to the Hackers soundtrack for early/mid '90s electronic music.

dynamojoe,

The Hyperion books by Dan Simmons.

Texas defendant challenging federal gun law at the Supreme Court says he doesn’t want firearms anymore (www.cnn.com)

Zackey Rahimi, the Texas criminal defendant challenging a federal gun law before the Supreme Court on Tuesday, said this summer that he no longer wanted to own firearms and expressed remorse for his actions that got him in trouble with the law....

dynamojoe,

It doesn’t matter. If the SC upholds the law (which is unlikely) the gun lobby will simply find someone more acceptable, and under slightly different circumstances, and bring up another challenge. They’ll keep going after gun laws the way the anti-choice side relentlessly attacked Roe.

dynamojoe,

The second amendment is not clear and has been given the broadest possible interpretation. Are you a member of a well-regulated militia?

Starbucks announces higher pay, but union workers will have to bargain for it (www.cnn.com)

Starbucks employees are getting more pay and new benefits, but some are only going to baristas that haven’t unionized. A National Labor Relations Board judge previously found that similar moves by Starbucks violate federal labor law, with the company appealing the decision....

dynamojoe,

Yes, that’s probably it, but also I think unions have to negotiate any change to the contract collectively. Even giving a union member more money is breach of contract. Starbucks would be exposed to union action if they did so. Of course, this depends on how the contract is written. This certainly seems anti-union but it’s also a smartass CYA on behalf of Starbucks. The union will raise hell immediately as they should.

brb adding the escapist to the blocklist

dynamojoe,

Sounds like Revenue Generation to me. Some out of town driver doesn’t know about the local traffic law, gets cited for breaking it, and loses if they fight it.

dynamojoe,

It’s about as icky as looking at my bank account and my bank highlighting a transfer to an investment house and suggesting its’ own in the same line.

dynamojoe,

The lesson here is not to question authority or you’ll get arrested and locked up.

X runs ‘timeline takeover’ ad promoting anti-trans film (techcrunch.com)

Thursday on X (Twitter), all users saw the same pinned topic under the “What’s happening?” sidebar. As part of a “timeline takeover” — which gives advertisers “priority access to logged-in users’ first impression of the day” — conservative media nonprofit PragerU is promoting the hashtag “#DETRANS” to...

dynamojoe,

Every day I miss my twitter account less and less. I now wish there was a way I could block twitter content inside news articles and such.

dynamojoe,

Same. I had a Twitter account. It’s gone now. I never had an X account.

dynamojoe,

A family of billionaires faces undue hardship? Oh fuck that. There are entire states full of people that would love to have the problems she’s got.

dynamojoe,

I find it funny that leftists

That’s as far as I need to go nowadays. Everything after is not worth reading.

dynamojoe,

I think you’re right. Most of the Jan 6 seditionists were just there to have a rally. Most. Some legitimately traitorous people planned to do some heinous shit under the cover of the mob. That’s why it was allowed to get out of control; it was part of the plan.

dynamojoe,

Where are the spreadsheets showing eery detail of both?

The questions you have to answer to build such a spreadsheet decide the result, not the data. How many kinds of cars are out there? What’s their cost vs. comfort, cost vs. performance, cost vs. efficiency or cost vs. reliability? Not even considering powertrain you’re already drowning in data, and that’s assuming customers are rational. If they were, the “correct” car, SUV, and truck would already be decided.

Marathon was a blast (and Halo incorporated many elements of it).

Isn’t it appropriate to change the file to something offensive to prevent the leeching?

I haven’t worked in a restaurant in 30 years and I still understood it by the second word.

Honest question: what was Hamas' long-game with respect to kidnapping Israelis? Did they think Israel would just negotiate rather than retaliate?

It just seems crazy to me given the power imbalance. A cynical part of me suspects that things are playing out exactly as some evil strategists hoped they would, which, given all the children dying, is super-depressing....

dynamojoe,

Hostages are variables that Hamas controls and Israel must respect. They can be used as chips to barter with, shields to hide behind, and tools to shame the Israelis in the court of public opinion.

dynamojoe,

I think the Empty Chair strategy is actively backfiring.

Samsung joins Google in RCS shaming Apple (www.theverge.com)

Samsung has released a new video in support of Google’s #GetTheMessage campaign which calls for Apple to adopt RCS or “Rich Communication Services,” the cross-platform protocol pitched as a successor to SMS that adopts many of the features found in modern messaging apps… like Apple’s own iMessage.

dynamojoe,

This public shaming bullshit reminds me of Epic’s Fortnite debacle and it’s not a good look, especially from Samsung who usually mocks Apple on Monday and is copying them by Friday (see “no CD drives in laptops” or “no headphone jack” or “no removable batteries in the phone”). I know they’re completely different issues but whining is whining.

dynamojoe,

I don’t have to guess your position based on your language but I do want you to understand that some of us like the walled garden. There’s a lot of shit out there that I don’t have to deal with and don’t want to have to.

Goodbye Youtube and thanks for all the fish (infosec.pub)

Youtube let the other shoe drop in their end-stage enshittification this week. Last month, they required you to turn on Youtube History to view the feed of youtube videos recommendations. That seems reasonable, so I did it. But I delete my history every 1 week instead of every 3 months. So they don’t get much from my choices....

dynamojoe,

When they take out uBlock Origin, they take me out as well.

dynamojoe,

As weird as it is, I think the democrats should save McCarthy. He’s a wretched asshole but the GOP isn’t going to replace him with anyone better. It also looks like he’ll ultimately take action when dire consequences are on the line. And let’s face it; the moonbats on the far right want him gone so they can elect Trump to the post.

dynamojoe,

There’s one for Tim Scott too. potential future astroturfing, I guess, but I don’t care. Block Community is my favorite button to click today.

dynamojoe,

Nobody wants to watch a bunch of losers kiss the ass of an elephant who isn’t even in the room (honorable mention to C. Christie who clearly does not kiss Trump’s ass)

2 Michigan fake electors ask judge to drop charges, citing state AG’s claim they’re ‘brainwashed’ (www.cnn.com)

Two fake GOP electors in Michigan asked a judge this week to dismiss their charges, arguing that state Attorney General Dana Nessel conceded that they didn’t have criminal intent when she said they were “brainwashed” after the 2020 election....

At least they admit it’s a cult.

Reddit is removing ability to opt out of ad personalization based on your activity on the platform (techcrunch.com)

Reddit said Wednesday that the platform is revamping its privacy settings with an aim to make ad personalization and account visibility toggles consistent. Most notably though, it is removing the ability to opt out of ad personalization based on Reddit activity....

dynamojoe,

The good news is I permanently opted out back in June. I won’t see ads on reddit ever again.

dynamojoe,

Maybe this is some sort of future-proofing for the increasingly likely need for a non-indicted GOP nominee.

dynamojoe,

…all for him to die in a tragic air accident in two months anyway.

dynamojoe,

Maybe not in this article but this is a perpetual accusation for just about any large and successful corporation to deal with. Using “Apple” gets headlines, but you’ve probably read similar accusations against Alphabet, Microsoft, Epic, EA, John Deere, etc…

dynamojoe,

I’m enjoying it. It has a “not yet critical mass” feel to it. There are a few features I’d like to see (Hide Thread, something like RES, etc) and there could be more traffic, but I genuinely don’t miss Reddit.

dynamojoe,

They’re cheap if you’re not too picky about the location.

dynamojoe,

Even the robots hate you, Elon.

dynamojoe,

Whatever. Texas gonna Texas.

dynamojoe,

He probably could pardon Hunter but there’s no way he’d do so before election day.

dynamojoe,

A little of column A, a little of column B. I’d put a lot of weight into when the investments were made. The older the investment, the more valid the claim. It’s not like Fox started out as the Trump channel - they originally sold scandal and outrage, not lies. No one can argue that they haven’t gone off the deep end since COVID, but if you were invested before then you had to find an incident that you could explain was the uncrossable line in order to divest (without losing your investing job) and there wasn’t one. It was little by little for years as the New Normal kept lowering the bar and the investors sat like the proverbial frogs in the pot. Looking back though, only Giuliani or Powell would now dare to say there wasn’t a line crossed somewhere in there from scandal to bullshit. After March 18, 2019 if you weren’t out you were screwed: not only did your investments lose a lot of value, you lost out on potential further gains had they stayed on the straight-and-narrow since Day 1.

I’d also say that investors couldn’t know that the Smartmatic and Dominion lies were being knowingly told at the time. It’s not like FOX was telling investors “You’re money’s safe with us, we sell lies”. They lied with a straight face to everyone.

But what the hell. Let 'em fight it out in court.

dynamojoe,

…and upon his conviction, this will be submitted as grounds for appeal. It will never ever end for Trump.

dynamojoe,

It reminds me of a Texaco gas station.

dynamojoe,

If they wanted it done, they could just adopt the same ethics rules that every other court in America has to abide. If they’re working on anything, it’s how to keep getting free vacations and gifts from donors without having to disclose them or, god forbid, someone on the court having to experience consequences for their corruption.

Knowing Thomas he’d probably argue for the rules then argue he’s exempt because he got the job before they were implemented.
