GiddyGap,

Fortunate enough to also have EU citizenship, so I’ve already made arrangements to leave the country in that case. Will keep voting from overseas, though.

GiddyGap,

I’m just not interested in living in the US under a second Trump presidency. Such a presidency would run against everything I stand for and against everything I want for myself, my family, and my kids.

GiddyGap,

No society should accept billionaires. There are so many other people who are in dire need. It makes zero difference if they have a billion or a 100 million.

GiddyGap,

There’s just a lot of inequality in the US that is both socially and politically unacceptable in the rest of the developed world. Extremes are more accepted here.

There are more extremely rich people than you would see in other Western countries and and many, many more extremely poor people than in other Western countries. Alleviating that would mean implementing policies to redistribute wealth that many Americans are not willing to implement, especially conservatives.

The US basically sacrifices the good of the many for the great of the few.

GiddyGap,

Which seems even stranger. In many other countries, Christians vote left of center to promote economic equality, reduce poverty, get green policies to protect God’s green earth, make sure that everyone has universal access to healthcare and education, etc.

In the US, they vote oppotite of that.

GiddyGap,

They are both internationally recognized countries, no different than Germany or the US.

GiddyGap,

Those subscribers were notified in July about the change. This is just a story about it taking effect in a few weeks.

how similar are other North American countries to USA??

I mean the other 2 countries, Canada and Mexico, how similar are both of them to United States?? Both countries have a similar economy and democracy etc, and I think those two countries share things like supermarkets, stores, etc. I suppose the cultural differences are not a lot, that is very nice.

GiddyGap,

If we get technical, so do Russia

Don’t think that’s being technical. The US and Russia are literally neighbors.

GiddyGap,

How is it different than switching to Enhanced search in Windows settings?

GiddyGap,

Thanks for the info.

GiddyGap,

Yeah, all that universal healthcare, parental leave, universal college, vacation time, etc., etc. is just the worst. Such lousy standard of living.

Not to mention the lack of school shootings. Who wants that?

GiddyGap,

I know credit cards can be a slippery slope for some, so learn how to practice financial discipline before getting one.

That said, if you’re not paying with a credit card, you’re paying at least 2 percent too much for everything you buy except the things that can’t easily be paid for with a credit card.

That adds up big over the years.

GiddyGap,

I know credit cards can be a slippery slope for some, so learn how to practice financial discipline before getting one.

GiddyGap,

Yeah, don’t spend more. Use it as a debit card.

And, again, make sure to be financially responsible and literate before you get a credit card.

GiddyGap,

Basically use any credit card as you would any debit card. That means never spend any money you don’t already have in your account. And always pay the full statement balance every month on time to avoid paying interest.

That way you will get all the rewards and none of the drawbacks.

GiddyGap,

Do whatever you would do if you didn’t have a credit card.

GiddyGap,

Were essentially Europe of America.

Get back to me when you have mandatory vacation time, universal healthcare, universal college-level education, universal pre-k, family leave, modern public transportation, non-crumbling infrastructure, climate-friendly policies, etc, etc.

Spam calls and texts are driving me fing crazy anyone have suggestions?

After repeated data breaches that no company really seems to give a s— about my phone is blowing up with literally hundreds of spam calls and texts month. I get and make MAAAAYBE 2 or 3 important calls per month, 180-200 of the rest are literally all spam. Anyone have any suggestions, apps ect that they have found refuge with?...

GiddyGap,

I do the same. And then I quickly block the number I didn’t know. Seems to help, but I still get lots of spam calls.

GiddyGap,

Love Edge of Tomorrow. Wish they would make that sequel.

GiddyGap,

Nokia 8210. It was small and awesome. It was before small became lame.

Why is everything in consumer / American life so fucking shitty now - and companies literally just say 'oh bc profit margins' and we're now expected to swallow that and sympathize?

like I went to taco bell and they didn’t even have napkins out. they had the other stuff just no napkins, I assume because some fucking ghoul noticed people liked taking them for their cars so now we just don’t get napkins! so they can save $100 per quarter rather than provide the barest minimum quality of life features.

GiddyGap,

The US has not set up a system that compensates properly. Most European countries have a security net in place when capitalism squeezes regular people. The US does not. You’re on your own.

GiddyGap,

Love the Heart Runner system in Denmark and Sweden. Wish the US had something like that.

heartrunner.com/about-the-system/

GiddyGap,

I tried to word it as non-biased as possible. How would you word it to make it less biased in your opinion?

GiddyGap,

Thanks for your response. Much appreciated.

Still, the things you say they don’t want to engage in a conversation about or even acknowledge are actual policies the party engages heavily in. And that’s really my question. How do they reconcile their non-religious convictions with those religious policies of the party.

Do you mean they just don’t care and vote for the party regardless because there’s one policy they like?

GiddyGap,

Thanks for the clarification.

GiddyGap, (edited )

I agree.

I asked this question because I really want to try to understand people who are different than me and hold other opinions than me. Broaden my horizon. Maybe help people question their own reasonings.

So, I asked a question on a topic I don’t understand. I hope people will answer honestly and that people who disagree will avoid persecuting that honesty.

We all need to find common ground somewhere.

GiddyGap,

Thank you for your response.

GiddyGap,

Thank you for your response and your perspective.

GiddyGap,

So, you complain about Trump and then you proceed to elect your own Trump. What’s up with that, Netherlands?

GiddyGap,

We’ll see about that.

GiddyGap,

Trump is not the candidate of change. Everyone knows him and knows what he stands for. And he’s been rejected many times.

The Republicans are not going to have to lie about how little he’s done to help the poor and middle class.

It’s just a feeling you have. The average American is actually better off than ever. If you’re not better off than ever, you’re probably just not the average American.

investopedia.com/americans-are-wealthier-than-eve…

GiddyGap,

Yeah, that’s what the article is talking about. That feeling of being less well off.

But even accounting for inflation, the average American is actually better off than ever, also while Biden’s been in office.

GiddyGap,

No single sentence is wrong, but overall it sounds unnatural and has none of the “flavor” of the language.

I’ve also found that it’s often contextually wrong. Like it doesn’t know what’s going on around it or how to interpret the previous paragraph or even the previous sentence, let alone the sentence two pages back that was actually relevant to the sentence it’s now working on.

GiddyGap,

If you want to prepare, watch The Handmaid’s Tale. Probably less entertaining when it’s real life.

GiddyGap,

That so many people feel the need to force other well-functioning people under their own religious or non-religious moral code.

Americans of Lemmy, what is your approach to next year's election?

2020 was… truly unique. It was so hard to stay away from doom scrolling, and I (and many others) were pretty disillusioned by the sad fact that so much of our country legitimately supported the Orange Man. I didn’t get a wink of sleep the night of the election because I genuinely considered it to be a make or break decision...

GiddyGap,

In 2016, I was an Independent. Straight down the middle. Would consider reasonable Democrats, Republicans, and 3rd party candidates.

In 2020, I was an Independent leaning Democratic. Would not consider Trump. Biden was locked in. Would hesitantly consider reasonable Republicans or Independents on a split ticket.

In 2024, I’m a Democrat. Will only consider Democrats up and down the ballot. No 3rd parties.

GiddyGap,

Imo, there used to be a few reasonable individual Republican candidates here and there. But now they litmus test into these insane issues and they don’t adapt when things change in society. They just dig in their heels and start mud-slinging. I’m not even bothering with them anymore.

GiddyGap,

That’s a toxic work environment in the making. Always call out that kind of behavior.

GiddyGap,

Why specific bought in '20/'21?

Because there were a lot of things converging in 2020-21. But thanks for your input as well. Always interesting to hear perspectives.

GiddyGap,

Any reason why you can’t rent out your current home and rent something else where you want to move to?

That way you could keep building equity with your low interest rates and sell when it makes more sense.

I know that requires being a landlord, but the current market also seems to require some creativity.

GiddyGap,

I know quite a few people in the same boat as you who have rented out their home with a low-interest mortgage and rent something else where they needed to go until it makes more sense to jump back in the market.

I think this a dilemma many, if not most, homeowners will face down the road. What to do with that mortgage from 2020-21.

GiddyGap,

Can you rent out your current home and rent something more suitable for yourself until it makes sense to jump back in the market?

Many homeowners are becoming “accidental landlords” these days because of this peculiar situation.

GiddyGap,

Wow. Never heard this variation before.

I know a lot of homeowners with low-interest mortgages from 2020-21 rent out instead of selling if they need to move and rent something else for themselves until it makes sense jump back in the market. But this one was new.

GiddyGap,

I understand. If you don’t want to deal with the business side of things, you could have a property management company do it. They usually take 8-10 percent of the rental price. But then you don’t really have to do anything.

GiddyGap,

This is specifically an issue in the US where the minimum wage just doesn’t match the cost of living in many areas.

Many European countries do much better on this.
