dotslashme,

Here’s a short list of things I personally want

  • Change hardware parts
  • Extendable storage
  • 3.5 mm jack

The fact that the whole phone is a unit is both absurd and stupid. It makes it nearly impossible to repair or replace anything but the screen. I cannot even remember how many phones I have been forced to recycle due to the fact that the battery no longer hold charge over time.

Storage might not be a big thing, most of us probably use cloud storage, but I don’t want cloud storage with a subscription fee, when it would be easier (and cheaper) to have storage directly in my phone.

I’m going to say it - fuck bluetooth! Every day it’s: will it connect? Do I have to re-pair? Is the sound really coming out of my headphones only or do everyone around me here what I hear?

dotslashme, (edited )

I might be pretty stupid, but why would police even want medical information? In what way are medical records a help in any police duty?

Edit: thanks for the responses. My only comment is that these examples are fucking terrifying.

dotslashme,

I never really understood the whole agreement thing where the oil producing countries need to approve a plan. First of all, there’s obviously a conflict of interest. Secondly, the other countries could just phase out their use of oil based products.

dotslashme,

Welcome to projects 101 where you are now in charge of coding, infrastructure, logging, metrics, secrets, linting and deployment.

dotslashme,

Piracy equals culture preservation in an age of subscription services.

dotslashme,

No of course not.

I still pay for things I can actually own, however subscription services routinely change, limit or simple remove items that you supposedly bought.

dotslashme,

Depends on the community IMHO. In piracy communities it is for sure not a controversial thought. Outside of those communities is an entirely different matter.

dotslashme,

Sweet, can’t wait to run kubernetes on my phone /s

Wanting to improve my Linux skills after 17 months of daily driving Linux

I’ve been daily driving Linux for 17 months now (currently on Linux Mint). I have got very comfortable with basic commands and many just works distros (such as Linux Mint, or Pop!_OS) with apt as the package manager. I’ve tried Debian as a distro to try to challenge myself, but have always ran into issues. On my PC, I could...

dotslashme,

Thunderstorms. It reminds me of my place in the world and how I should stop taking myself so seriously.

dotslashme,

First time in Singapore I saw a cockroach sitting on the floor, I went to kill it and then discovered there are flying roaches. Hilariousness of course ensued as a fled out of the apartment, screaming like a terrified little boy.

dotslashme,

dotslashme,

As often as I can, people deserve to feel good.

The day after the 5th of November. Nothing bad ever happens when you suppress the freedom of speech and the right to protest.

People confusing privacy with secrecy.

What's you plan for your digital legacy?

Lately I started including what happens to my data in case I die unexpectedly in my threat model. As of now I’d like for everything to stay private. All my accounts have a strong password that I store on a keepass datbase that I store only on encrypted devices which themselves are protected only by PIN or Password with no...

dotslashme,

Hard to implement, but I would like to have a dead man’s switch that just erased every single trace of me, then post an obituary that says: 404 - person not found.

dotslashme,

Well, I sure am happy I put the nsfw tag on this post now. Thanks for the awesome reply.

dotslashme,

Interesting, would you mind elaborating a bit? What do you see as the good parts? What do you see as the bad parts?

dotslashme,

I love the fact you call them embarrassing instead of useless.

dotslashme,

As an insomniac I can relate.

dotslashme,

Thanks for explaining. Hadn’t actually thought about it until you said it, and now I can’t stop thinking about it.

Probably resting bitchface if they do video surveillance. If audio only, most likely Mr talks-to-himself

"Linux Desktop: A Collective Delusion" - an unhinged rant (tadeubento.com)

Linux has made significant strides, and in 2023, it’s better than ever. However, there are still individuals perpetuating a delusion: that desktop Linux is as user-friendly and productive as its mainstream counterparts. After a few discussions on Lemmy, I believe it’s important to provide a clear review of where Linux falls...

dotslashme,

Most likely because the term ‘Linux desktop’ is ambivalent. Are you talking about DE’s or WM’s? Are you looking at GNOME or KDE?

dotslashme,

Man, that title sure is clickbaity

How do you start your applications once the idea has been created? Do you implement the screens first and then work on the backend, or do you build the backend first and then take on the visual part (the screens)?

dotslashme,

Backend only with a good api. I leave frontend to people who actually know what they’re doing.

dotslashme,

Good feedback!

dotslashme,

Pretty sure none of these parts ended up in a private jet.

Should I worry about "legitimate interest" tracking cookies?

I know they’ve been around since the GDPR came into effect, but I’ve suddenly noticed a sharp increase in the cookie prompts on web pages which have a second “legitimate interest” page. Some of these have an “object all” button, but plenty require you to manually opt-out of sometimes hundreds of ad-trackers....

dotslashme,

Personally I don’t trust cookie policies at all, I use plugins that will bypass cookie banners and then auto delete cookies 20 seconds later.

dotslashme,

Yes, it is a choice. I choose to delete cookies because it is the technique most websites use. Tracking plugins, canvas, webrtc, etc are harder to defend against and if they are all deployed by a tracking site, it is almost impossible to not be unique.

dotslashme,

Okay, I’ll start with a basic one. Equal rights for everyone, regardless of beliefs, physical traits, emotional traits, sexuality or financial situation - will probably need amendments since it’s hard to come up with every possible circumstance.

dotslashme,

I mean I don’t cherish the idea of giving a Nazi anything, but I still think they deserve equal rights, but it probably also depend on what you mean by rights. My interpretation would be that this include every service provided by the government. Handling groups like Nazis I think would fall under hate speech if they use their opinions to antagonize or incite violence towards other people.

Call me maybe, that shit is a massive ear worm and seems to annoy a whole generation.

dotslashme,

My thoughts are similar, but I would consider the cause to be the lack of adversity and challenges. If you are brought up in a sheltered environment where every problem is handled by someone else, you don’t develop proper empathy or problem solving skills.
