dmention7,

Sorry, the fact you’re being downvoted for this is kinda funny.

As a generally left-leaning person, lemmy absolutely has a leftist demographic, and most politics-related threads are full of upvoted low effort hot takes, while relevant but unpopular opinions tend to get downvoted.

But, then again social media is gonna social media…

dmention7,

Hey, it’s one of those low-effort hot takes I was talking about!

dmention7,

Good point, and worth keeping in mind! At the same time, the generics are often so much cheaper it’s worth a try. I take Claratin daily for allergies and the Costco version is literally 10% the cost of name brand. It’s astounding how much of a markup basic OTC drugs can have.

dmention7,

Breakfast cereal 100%

I’d go out of my way to buy Malt-o-Meal cereals even if they weren’t cheaper. Marshmallow Mateys 4 Lyfe!

dmention7,

But why are they pointed directly at your face?

dmention7,

Did you meant to ask “What do YOU” call this dish?

Because the “correct” name probably changes every 100 miles [161km]

dmention7,

Ah, then I’d call it “eggs in a hole”

dmention7,

Not sure if it’s totally your vibe, but Machinae Supremacy is more on the rock/metal side of gaming themed music with a lot of C64 chiptune layers.

“Indiscriminate Murder is Counter-Productive” is one of my faves from them.

dmention7,

I’m not sure whether to update or downvote. The first sentence doesnt seem too controversial, but hoo boy you nailed it on the second lol

Screw it, upvoted.

dmention7,

Favorite so far was probably a 2003 Mazdaspeed Protégé. They were kinda anemic for a 2.0t car out of the box, but I had built the engine a bit and goosed it to around 225whp. It wasn’t the fastest thing around, but it had a raw mechanical feel that was a hoot to drive and toss around corners, especially after adding some stickier rubber.

I’ve got a NB Miata in the garage right now, but man it’s just missing about 75whp to match the smiles per hour factor.

dmention7,

It’s weird that the headline is “Websites using AI to Undress Women…” and the first line of the article is “Websites that used artificial intelligence (AI) to undress people, especially women…”

dmention7,

I feel like I missed a ton of details on my first watchthrough, but still enjoyed it a ton.

I’m curious if anyone has given it a second go, and if it added or removed from the experience?

dmention7,

I’ve always thought it would be an interesting experiment for all (or most) proposed laws to be written as though they were scientific experiments, complete with:

  • Hypothesis (what is the law intended to accomplish?),
  • Metrics (how will effectiveness be measured),
  • Effectiveness period (when will these effects be realized?)
  • Success cnriteria (what is the minimum effect to consider the law effective?)
  • Side effects (what might go wrong, and how will that be evaluated?)

There’s probably lots that does not cover, but the main idea is that any new law comes with quantitative ways to determine its effectiveness against its stated goals. Any law that does not meet those goals in the predefined time period is scrapped.

But again, as Zeppo said, without an informed and interested electorate, it’s all pretty much moot.

dmention7,

It’s astounding how much fuckery can be traced to just a handful of names. 😞

dmention7,

On the one hand, that just sounds like deconstructed egg salad.

On the other hand it sounds gross and weird in practice, so I think this fits.

dmention7,

Is this your first time in an “unpopular opinion” thread? lol

dmention7,

Yep I get the same behavior. It would be nice to return back to the comment you just replied to.

dmention7,

The part I can’t figure out is why?

Bookmarks/favorites are designed specifically for managing large collections of more or less frequently accessed sites. They have descriptions, tags, folder structures, etc all built in and requiring a few kb of disk space each instead of 100MB of RAM. I’m wracking my brain for a reason why deliberately keeping hundreds or thousands of tabs loaded could possibly be more effective at managing a collection of resources. I got nothing though…

dmention7,

There are some crappy pears out there, but good ones (like you get in those ridiculous Harry & David gift boxes) are a thing of beauty.

It’s all moot though, because pineapple puts them both to shame.

dmention7,

Uhh, do you guys not have pockets?

Where was your phone when you walked into the bathroom, and where does it go when you walk out?

dmention7,

I honestly can’t figure out if this is the only answer to the question OP was actually asking, or just the best joke answer lol

dmention7,

I think a good general rule there is:

Is the cliche the setup for the joke, or is it the entire punchline?

The former can make for quality humor, but the latter is just being lazy.

dmention7,

I think it depends. Most people could already get away with a lot of immoral or antisocial behaviors without super powers, but most of us still don’t.

The Boys is an interesting one because there are hundreds of supes out there, enough to have a community of depravity. If you were the only one with super powers and you decided to majorly abuse them, you’d be a social outcast, even if you didnt face strict punishment, which most of us would really not want.

dmention7,

Same for me. I usually have a “daily drinker” to keep me awake at work and then something nicer for weekends. I’ve been quite happy getting a bag of their roasters choice every couple weeks so that I have something fresh and new for the weekends when I can enjoy it more.

Their prices are very reasonable and I’ve received some bags that I would not have picked out myself but really enjoyed.

dmention7,

Impulse control and the general idea of delaying minor pleasures now that will have significant benefits later, or even just not doing things that kinda feel good in the moment but will make you miserable in the near future. As a species we’re pretty terrible at those kinds of judgments.

The meme of the guy poking a stick into his bike wheel in one frame and lying in a crumpled pile in the next is timeless for exactly that reason. Same with shocked Pikachu.

dmention7,

I googled “song lyrics interpretation” and got several decent looking results. Was there something specific you’re looking for that doesn’t exist?

dmention7,

Right? As long as there are no crayons jammed in the disc slot, game on!

I mean, I would definitely give the kids a talk about not drawing on things that are not meant to be drawn on, but better this than the TV or something.

dmention7,

Not even indestructible, just big heavy destructible death traps!

There’s a video floating around of a midsized sedan from the 60s and the 00s in a frontal offset crash and the old car is absolutely demolished.

dmention7,

I wish it set at 5pm… 4:25pm here and it’s not even December!

That said, I honestly don’t mind winter. You can always add layers, but heat and humidity are just plain miserable. Plus I think it’s much more pleasant to come inside to a warm house after being out in the cold than it is to come into an air conditioned house from the heat. The former actively feels cozy and relaxing while the latter just feels like relief.

IMO summer and winter are just the price you have to pay to really appreciate those fleeting perfect weeks in the spring and fall.

dmention7,

Man, I feel that. Used to live in MN for quite a few years, and both the summers and winters could be brutal. I’m about 300 miles south now and somehow both winter and summer are milder 🤷‍♂️

dmention7,

I didn’t realize that was Chicago’s tornado siren, but it’s 100% the one that popped into my head. It just sounds viscerally wrong.

dmention7, (edited )

This is kind of a weirdly phrased question.

Mathematically, THE argument of the sine function is the angle in question. One definition of sine, using the sides of a right triangle, is the ratio of the opposite leg to the hypotenuse of said triangle: sin(theta)=opposite/hypotenuse.

Edit: it occurred to me that maybe what you’re asking is how to compute the angle, theta, for which sin(theta) = a certain ratio of opposite/hypotenuse. There is an inverse sine function (often called arcsin) that does just that. Arcsin(opp/hyp)=theta. That’s the case where it would make sense to take the side lengths as arguments.

Ultra HDR is a new image format available with Android 14 on supported devices & camera. Basically it’s a JPEG image but some additional data added to it when captured on supported devices. With ultra HDR, images can have darker shadows and brighter highlights.

I thought the same thing at first, but it sounds like it is just that you can now view the “Ultra HDR”-ness within the app.

Also,

Google Messages doesn’t strip the gain map metadata from images

dmention7,

The button on the left should say “adults aged 18-35 are buying less ____ because of ethical concerns/recent health findings/changing values/rising CoL/better alternatives (pick one)” and the bottom panel should say “clickbait journalists”

dmention7,

My bad… I guess I figured people could digest 3 lines of text without it being pasted over meme template

dmention7,

I’m basically a toddler when it comes to fruit. It can sit around on the counter looking all pretty for days and I won’t touch it. But the moment my wife cuts some up, I’ll devour it.

Maybe you just need a wife who likes to chop things 🤔

dmention7,

Ugh, this one hurts to read. I have plenty of hobbies and interests, but for whatever reason it feels so painful and awkward to discuss them with people i’m not already decently acquainted with, so it probably comes across as you describe to many folks.

dmention7,

Until compensation in the food service industry is fundamentally reworked, always tip well.

Unfortunately I think the reality is that as long as people are tipping well, there is little motivation on any party (except the customer) to rework compensation in the food service industry.

As a customer, I hate the situation. The explosion in tipping (both expected amount and breadth of jobs relying on tips) I’ve seen in my couple decades as an adult is staggering. But I still want my server to be paid decently, and therefore I tip decently. But it leaves a bad taste in my mouth every time, knowing that the establishment is relying on my guilt to pick up the slack in their compensation.

dmention7,

You touched on something that makes sense, but for me personally it takes more than just having different public vs private personas for a person to seem fake.

Many people naturally have a different demeanor or way of interacting in public than private, which doesn’t necessarily make them seem fake. What feels fake is when you can pick up on a deliberate or curated public persona, especially if it’s being done deceptively or for some material gain.

dmention7,

I upvote interrobang usage reflexively.

Has Windows startup repair or a troubleshooter ever fixed your issue even once?

Yeah, basically that. I’m back at work in Windows land on a Monday morning, and pondering what sadist at Microsoft included these features. It’s not hyperbole to say that the startup repair, and the troubleshooters in settings, have never fixed an issue I’ve encountered with Windows. Not even once. Is this typical?...

dmention7,

That one usually is successful by disabling your network adapter, then re-enabling it. Basically…

Have you tried turning it off then back again?

dmention7,

I’m getting major Spuds Macenzie vibes here. Alternate backstory?

dmention7,

There are few greater pleasures than an inexplicably long McDonald’s fry that’s somehow still crunchy all the way down.

If you disagree, fite me irl

dmention7,

Dude… harsh.

Not unwarranted, but harsh.

dmention7,

That one just makes me sad and angry. I try not to judge people, but I would judge the shit out of someone for doing that IRL.

dmention7,

Gotcha, so it’s just an emotional appeal based on word choice, rather than attacking the real issues problems with the rental market…
