dmention7,

Now I feel stupid for even thinking otherwise.

dmention7,

Obvious and irrelevant statement

Please let that sink in

Lmao what an eye-wateringly stupid take.

dmention7,

You: “The left projects and makes shit up constantly!”

Also you: Proceeds to project and just make some shit up in the next goddamned sentence.

dmention7,

You hit the nail on the head there. There are lots of reasons to seek out a less corporate, less mainstream online community. No need to invoke any horseshoe theories.

So far I see very little evidence of QAnon type ratholes here, probably in no small part because the platform doesn’t really seem conducive to paranoid echo chamber type activity.

dmention7,

I feel like there’s an opportunity to work Great White into the title, but I haven’t had enough coffee to work it out yet lol

dmention7,

Ratchet & Clank games are solid and approachable if you’re into casual platformers. The main focus is the huge array of different weapons which often get hilariously over the top in the late game, and story is just there for a backdrop.

dmention7,

Fuck Ron DeSantis and fuck all his clones.

dmention7,

This is why I sort by New 😂

Follow this train of thought… Would the web as a whole be better if there were one single website for Linux topics?

I haven’t seen a single viable argument that justifies this irritating and inconvenient situation

What is there to justify, and to whom? Nobody is forcing there to be multiple communities on the same topic, and if Linux users prefer a single community, nothing is stopping them from coalescing around the best one.

I get the discomfort some people might face dealing with seemingly duplicated communities, but the whole thing is such a non-issue, and is pretty much the way the democratic web has has been intended to work since forever.

Especially compared to the alternative… Some central authority who gets to shut down c/LinuxDevelopers because there is too much overlap with c/LinuxEnthusiasts? Why should there be one single Linux community and what do you propose to do if someone makes a their own slightly different flavor of Linux community?

dmention7,

Honest question: How do you currently deal with multiple news outlets reporting on the same story?

dmention7,

people sort out the best content and comments by voting

Which is exactly what will happen with “duplicate” communities.

If you are trying to make the point that I should deal with multiple duplicates posts on Lemmy in the same way I deal with multiple news outlets, then your point is equivalent to say that Lemmy is useless.

Lmao hyperbole much? My point is that you presumably don’t go complaining to the aether about the fact that your news feed is cluttered by CNN, WaPo, Vox, CNBC, etc all reporting on the Crimean bridge being blown up. You read multiple articles for perspective, or focus on the outlet you feel is more valuable and filter out the rest.

Lemmy is a platform for people to create and join communities freely, not a too-down service to actively collate and condense topics. If that makes it useless to you, then maybe you’re looking for a different platform honestly.

What's something you used to do/see/say but don't anymore because you don't feel it's right?

Me personally? I’ve become much less tolerant of sexist humor. Back in the day, cracking a joke at women’s expense was pretty common when I was a teen. As I’ve matured and become aware to the horrific extent of toxicity and bigotry pervading all tiers of our individualistic society, I’ve come to see how exclusionarly and...

dmention7,

Never knew that about “rule of thumb”. Personally, I think some expressions like that are so far removed from their original meaning that they really are innocuous for all practical purposes, but I see your point.

(Hard agree on “gyped” though LOL)

dmention7,

Are they wrong about public opinion of the N word though? This entire thread is a collection of words/phrases/actions that people (and often society at large) used to think were completely harmless but gradually realized carried some negative connotation–or were even downright slurs–to certain people, and committed to stop using.

This is not necessarily a dig on you personally, but if you think that people proactively being considerate of fellow humans is a bad thing or “going too far”, maybe that’s a you problem.

ETA: OP never said anyone should feel bad for saying sir or maam, and implying so is a total strawman.

dmention7,

Complete vaping noob here just replying to let you know that I’m saving this post for further reading and research. Appreciate the time you took to write all this out!

dmention7,

Yeah, as someone who used to frequent car forums back in the day, one way I think about it is you might have Mazda, Subaru, Ford, Chevy, etc specific forums. And they all had subsections devoted to suspension upgrades, with a lot of content that would look really similar to someone just getting into cars. But they also met the different needs of the different communities, and had their own vibes and culture.

Now imagine all those communities could interact with each other directly, and you end up with something like what we’re getting with the Fediverse.

Or maybe I’m just too hung up on analogies, idk.

dmention7,

I want to burn my mouth on that SO. BADLY.

dmention7,

Right??

Maybe some context would help explain why being asked to do your job is mildly infuriating.

dmention7,

I’ve got a couple of these totes from Target in my closet.

www.target.com/p/…/A-81967134

They each hold about 8-10 spools comfortably, and seem to make an excellent seal. Probably a little costlier than DIY-ing IKEA totes, but convenient if you just need 1 or 2.

dmention7,

Definitely not an unpopular opinion, but I think it just comes down to Amazon specifically directing those questions (by email or prompts on the website) to people who have bought the product. And some people just dutifully answer the prompt without realizing their answer is going to be published in the Q&A section.

dmention7,

It’s a bit of hyperbole to say you’ll spend more time maintaining a Creality printer than using it (Ender3 S1 Pro here), though I agree with the sentiment that you should think twice about them unless you enjoy the tinkering and learning aspect of the hobby.

If you want high quality (and fast) prints right out of the box, the tradeoff is you will need to spend more than Creality money.

I would also second PrusaSlicer. I saw significant improvements in print quality and speed using mostly their default Ender3 settings versus what I was able to cobble together in Cura.

dmention7,

Fair enough! I may just be lucky to have ended up with a machine that seems pretty solid.

dmention7,

Coarse language and abrasivness are not the end of the world as long as you are adding to the conversation. OP literally added nothing except for general dickishness.

dmention7,

On the chance you’re not just making a funny - The walls of your house keep inside stuff inside and outside stuff outside. A thermos is just a wall for heat, whether that heat is trying to get in or out.

dmention7,

Love the idea, but man that marshmallow is woefully under-toasted ☹️
