My home lab has a mild amount of complexity and I’d like practice some good habits about documenting it. Stuff like, what each system does, the OS, any notable software installed and, most importantly, any documentation around configuration or troubleshooting....
I get the idea of instances, like you can make your own and this is good for privacy. But some lemmy instances are much more popular and this in fact makes it another Reddit. If there are separate instances for niche topics, why not make it another community inside a larger instance?
You just need to tell them you want a modem only, no router.
I’m running an Asus rt68ac with Merlin firmware. Which is nice because I can force all dns through my piholes. Even the hardcoded stuff like the iot devices.
Granted I’m not someone who uses AI assistants a lot, but I’ve never seen anyone use any other voices than the default one (Red). There are 10 voices for Google Assistant, apparently. Do you or someone you know use them?

I’ve come across Red Hat allot lately and am wondering if I need to get studying. I’m an avid Ubuntu server user but don’t want to get stuck only knowing one distro. What is the way to go if i want to know as much as I can for use in real world situations.
My experience in my career has been all RHEL/CentOS. The meat of Linux admin isn’t going to hugely change between most distros tho. Different package mgmt, how the network is configured, etc… Spin up an VM, install it from scratch, and just learn those differences.
I consistently hear people on YouTube complain that the subscribe button doesn’t do anything for viewers, now that channel notifications are controlled by the bell. But it does do something: it puts the videos from that channel in your subscription feed, which is readily accessible on all versions of YouTube. So why do people...
I am the kind of person who enjoys “big weird” scifi like Stanisław Lem. Stories about trying to relate to and find common ground with something so alien that the prospect of even understanding is basically hopeless. Star Trek usually doesn’t do stories that, which makes sense as it often uses alien races as allegories or...
I didn’t like the Disco Klingons. It was too much of a change to an established race for me. But, I like your idea and I think I could have been more on board if they had done it that way.
You know those sci-fi teleporters like in Star Trek where you disappear from one location then instantaneously reappear in another location? Do you trust that they are safe to use?...
I love Star Trek, but using the transporter as a plot device led to some really bs situations. Tuvix. The time it made everyone children. The time Picard fucked off to be an energy being so they just used last week’s pattern to rematerialize him… Thomas Riker… I could keep going.
I mean think about what would need to happen for Tuvix to exist. The computer would somehow have to do some really complex genetics work to create a hybrid species and somehow merge the 2 very different brains into one stable and coherent organism.
An IRL tuvix situation would be a dead blob of body horror on the transporter pad. They’d be like, fuck clean-up on isle 5, data corruption and pull the last good backup. Because keeping literally just the most recent copy would be criminally negligent. Then they’d rematerialize you but it was you from 2 days ago and you get to wonder for the rest of your life what the other version of you did in the 2 days.
I’m trying to find a good method of making periodic, incremental backups. I assume that the most minimal approach would be to have a Cronjob run rsync periodically, but I’m curious what other solutions may exist....

YSK: When making posts on Lemmy/Kbin always put at the end some hashtags related to your post topic.
So users from Mastodon and Pixelfed can interact with your post without even need to use their Lemmy/Kbin account or learn about "how to use the ActivityPub".
This also helps to have more content avaliable across the Fediverse due to better discoverability.
Right. I like that there can be interoperability between the different platforms. But they’re different platforms that are consumed differently. You don’t need to jam then together.
YouTube and Wikipedia both use the same protocol (https) but you wouldn’t treat them the same.
As I understand it, instances can be hosted by anybody. So, doesn’t it make sense that you should be able to shop around what instance you want to join based on stated beliefs on how the instance and information should be run (de-federation, etc)? Shouldn’t there be some kind of public information to keep them held...
You could require that of the server you live on and not join ones that don’t comply. But I don’t see that as becoming a requirement to host an open instance.
The main reason for the Linux operating system not seeing widespread adoption is because of its multitude of distros. Ubuntu, Debian, Arch, Mint… there are just so many choices, just like how when someone asks how to join the Fediverse people will response with “which instance?”...
AsI understand it someone is paying for me to use this so should I try to limit my time here to keep their costs down? Should I avoid leaving it open casually? Is there a way to support instances that I enjoy?
How many of you have tried using SearXNG? It's a meta search engine that pull data from a number of sources before ranking and displaying them. I really like the cached feature that tries to load the internet archive copy of the page.
Spun up the container about a week ago. Made it my default search in Firefox. So far I’ve been happy with the quality of the results although I will admit there is a perceptible lag when submitting searches, compared to google/bing/etc… I imagine that’s mostly to do with the fact that it’s waiting on multiple search engines to fill my request.
I do like it so far. I figure with some tuning I could get the response time down.
I’m using Signal, but after I found out that it’s not as privacy-friendly as it claims, I’m uneasy about sharing my address there. I trust the person who asked for my address, but not the service.
