Was rather shocked to find BT hubs don’t allow you to change DNS servers anymore and force you to use their own ones, so I can’t properly setup adguard....
Lots of good suggestions. The down side to a pc running opnsense is going to be electricity costs. If that’s a concern.
Any of the Asus routers supported by Merlin will do what you need. (That’s what I’m currently doing). It has a feature called DNS control that will intercept DNS lookups and send them to the servers you define.
There’s been some discussion about the dead instance checker over on !fediverse!fediverse being a bit overzealous but I didn’t see anything here, so I wanted to raise it....
I don’t think windows has anything to do with your IQ slipping. You don’t understand how NTFS ACLs work and despite several people trying to explain them you stubbornly refuse to learn or reevaluate your stance.
I was trying to work out why it is that when I receive a notification and I click “view context” nothing happens if the msg came from lemmy.world. The screen blinks for a second but gives no prior posts. Well after digging into this, I see that #lemmyWorld has just recently joined the exclusive #walledGarden of Cloudflare....
I agree that a large number of instances all setting behind CloudFlare centralizes those instances and adds a centralized point of failure. But that’s where my agreement stops.
All your lemmy interactions are mediated by your instance (dbzer0). If you’re having a problem with your notifications, or loading posts, or responding to content that’s a problem with your client and your instance. Full stop. If you’re instance is having issues federating due to cloudflare, that’s certainly a problem, and it would be in your best interest to speak to your instance admins so they can work with the other instances to resolve it. IF you’re having problems communicating with your instance, that’s between you and them.
Nothing about decentralization says that all instances are required to allow YOU to access their instance. The opposite really, each instance is entitled to run however they want. The fact that you can still view and interact with posts (via your instance) says that decentralization and federation are actually working.
If you’re concerned about centralization and walled gardens you should be upset about the disproportionate number of users and communities that exist on lemmy.world. You are true decentralization, those communities should be distributed across the fediverse rather than being at the whims of one instances admins.
Just had NextCloud denying my credentials (not for the first time). I know they weren’t wrong because I’m using a password manager. Logs didn’t say much. Was about to reinstall (again, not the first time nextcloud went bonkers on me) before I tried a docker compose down && docker compose up. Lo and behold after a restart...
So, now’s as good a time as any to ask. Why is everyone using Nextcloud? I’ve been quietly using Owncloud for a very long time and never had any issues with it. How is Owncloud bad?
Note: It seems my original post from last week didn't get posted on lemmy.world from kbin (I can't seem to find it) so I'm reposting it. Apologies to those who may have already seen this....
That’s odd. I’m currently monitoring 17 vms on one host along with a handful of physical devices. Nothing like the issues you’ve encountered has happened.
So I have one of those Bluetooth thermometers for meat and other foods. I heard it wasn’t supposed to work in my oven, because it’s a combination of a regular oven in the microwave. If you can’t afford something you shouldn’t buy it. Just because you don’t agree with the system doesn’t mean you get to ignore it and then justify it by taking a moral high ground.
You know the servers wages are dependent on tips and you choose not to pay them. THAT is the social contract. Whether you agree with it or not.
If you cared about changing the system you’d take steps to change it without screwing the workers. You’re just being cheap.
Hey guys, I’m running a simple docker compose server on an old laptop, hosting calibre(web), nextcloud and navidrome exposed on a cloudflare domain. Nextcloud allows 2fa, however navidrome and calibre web don’t, so I thought I’d better get onto setting up Authelia…...
I’ll be the dissenting voice to say, no you don’t need it. If you keep things updated and follow best practices you should be fine. Unless you piss off a state actor.
That being said, it would be wise to have 2fa on everything if you can.
My home lab has a mild amount of complexity and I’d like practice some good habits about documenting it. Stuff like, what each system does, the OS, any notable software installed and, most importantly, any documentation around configuration or troubleshooting....
I’m only just starting to dip my toes in docker. Most of my stuff are kvm vms. I have a decent set of Ansible roles to setup a new vm when I spin it up but I’m not to the point where the specifics of every system is in Ansible yet.
I played with GLPI just long enough to realize that was way more than I wanted or needed. I’d like to track changes but I don’t want to run a full ticketing/chg mgmt system to do it.
I think I looked at netbox a while back. I may circle back to it for the actual physical layer. If I remember the ipam didn’t include network scanning tho.
I’d like to document what I have, and what I need to do it spin it back up with minimal effort should I need to. Esp, anything that’s unique to my setup or that I did to work around a problem. I’ve shot myself in the foot many a time where I go back to something 6 months later and I’ve long since forgotten what I did. So, if it’s not commented in a config I’m figuring it out all over again.
Ideally I’d like to move in that direction. I have some Ansible roles that I use for initial configuration but I haven’t kept current. I’d like to get better about that as part of this project.
It certainly wouldn’t be because I’ve been doing it this way for so long that it never occurred to me. Nope. Certainly not that.In fairness, I very recently switched from a cobbled together apache web server/rev proxy config I’ve been carrying along in some form for well over a decade (I remember converting the config to 2.4), to an NPM container. I had some initial trouble switching my certs over to NPM and haven’t revisited that yet.
I’m in the middle of a major overhaul of my tech stack. Fixing certs is on my short list.
Thanks for pointing out where I was stuck in my ways.
