Hi Pixel 8 and 8 pro users, how has your experience with the new line of phones been so far? I upgraded from a 6 Pro because I shattered my 6 Pro’s screen a couple of months ago.
Overall I like the upgrade. A lot of it is very similar - but the most noticeable improvement to me is the flat screen vs. the curved screen from the 6 Pro. I also appreciate the 5x optical zoom over the 6’s 4x. It’s also noticeably better at macro shots - did the 6 pro even have a macro lens?
I don’t know if the 6 Pro had an OLED screen or if the 8 Pro just does a better job showing it off, but it does a little lighting effect with my photos that make the per-pixel lighting noticeable in a way I never noticed on the 6 Pro.
The one major downgrade I’ve noticed, which I think also affects the 6 Pro since it’s software, is that they removed the ability to take a photosphere from the camera app. That’s a major disappointment since I was a big fan of that feature, and I’m on the lookout for a competent replacement app for that functionality.
Also a very minor annoying change that I know affects the 6 Pro too: The Calendar widget can no longer be shrunken to be only 3 tall. This is particularly annoying because I had it that size on my 6 Pro, and noticed I couldn’t on my 8 Pro (before trading it in) - so I made it 4 tall on my 6 Pro to test out, and it never let me put it back to 3 tall again. Seems like a pointless change that gives me less space.
Pro tip: If your trade-in phone has a cracked screen, just lie about it. They were offering $200 for a working 6 Pro with cracked screen or $400 for one without a cracked screen. My crack was pretty noticeable but it passed inspection anyways and I got the $400. If they do notice it you’ll just get bumped down to the $200 you’d have gotten with honesty anyways. Also sign up for the $2.50 trial of Google One, which gets you 10% back in store credit for Google Store purchases - that $2.50 one month trial got me my phone case, screen protector, and camera protector for free after the credit from the actual phone purchase.

I use a case, so I don’t get much contact with the back - either now or back on the P6P - but it does feel pleasant and satisfying to glide my fingers over. I wouldn’t trust it to not be slippery on an uneven surface, but it’s quite soft. The G logo in the middle of the back is a different smoother finish, though, and it feels kind of bad to glide my finger over it - It effectively feels like a sticky spot.
Honestly can’t say I remember what the back of the 6P felt like.
I really hope it comes back at some point. At least I can still properly view photospheres so if I find another app that can make them (haven’t really looked yet), it should be okay.
I had a P6P and now have the P8P - I assume what you’re complaining about is the delay it takes for the P6P to recognize your fingerprint compared to some other phones?
If so: I did notice the 8P recognized faster than the P6P did - though still nowhere near as fast as I’ve seen the Samsung Galaxy S21’s sensor work for someone else I know.
The speed benefit of the P8P went away after I added a screen protector though - the ZAGG one from the Google Store. Now it’s just as slow as I remember it being on the P6P, with a bit more unreliability to boot - sometimes I have to reposition or rescan my finger. (I did remember to re-enroll my fingers after applying the protector) (There was no unreliability before the protector or on the P6P)
I’m not super sure that applies here - they aren’t being punished (legally) for getting the abortion, but for using the roads to get there. It seems to me conceptually similar to how European companies aren’t allowed to sell drugs that are used for lethal injection to the US, even though those drugs are legal to sell in Europe: They aren’t being punished for taking part in an execution that’s legal where it happens, just for doing something that enables it in a place where it isn’t legal. Same deal here.
I’m sure it’s an unconstitutional/illegal law for some other reason, I just don’t think this specific reason applies.

That’s not even always the issue though - like recently Veritasium had an ancient video demonitized for mentioning that the subject of the video committed suicide, so now their most recent video is a censored re-upload of it. They include a new segment talking about the frustrating demonitization scheme Youtube has.

As a kid I got a lot of mileage out of The Bugs Bunny Crazy Castle. It was honestly nothing special but it was a fun if very basic game. Password-based and not all that difficult for an adult.

I’m not so sure about changing the terminology, but if we did, I think it should be a word that implies what the situation is: That the instance they pick isn’t a walled garden in itself, but just an access point to the wider connected Lemmyverse. I think that was a common confusion point for most of us when we first heard of Lemmy.
So… “access point”? Or “gateway”? Or for a milder change, going from “instance” to “default instance” might get the point across.

I wasn’t really raised into religion - my mom was a believer (Honestly not sure if she still is, I’ve picked up hints that may have changed), but she never once went to or brought me to church, we never talked about religion, etc. I think she got enough of that stuff when she was a kid.

By “less important” I just meant, for example, games that are in the beginning or middle of their respective league instead of the championship game - or shows for a series that are in the middle of a season, instead of a premiere or finale.
I know every game is vitally important to someone, or that every episode of a given show is important to a dedicated enough viewer - but season/series premieres/finales and sporting league championship games are definitely set apart from the rest. Lots of people watch the Baseball World Series finale games. A lot fewer watch every game leading up to it. Lots of people will watch the series finale for a popular TV show, even if they didn’t happen to catch every episode preceding it. That sort of thing.
I’m not too concerned about the cutoff for “popular”. If the site wants to tell me about the Curling world cup, then by all means.

This absolutely doesn’t come from informed experience, and is speculative drivel, but:
I think just mentioning that you “designed your own major” may help a lot in various types of job search. Regardless of what the actual process is like (I have no idea), it sounds impressive, and makes it sound like you’re a person with a lot of initiative and drive. That could help make up for any perceived competitive disadvantage.
Of course your mileage may vary, especially if you’re applying for a job that would heavily revolve around topics covered by a very specific major. But sometimes it helps to stand out, and “I designed my own major” could help you do that.
It seems like every shower has its own unique way of controlling water temperature and pressure. Of all the showers I’ve ever used, no two of which have ever been alike, I like my controls the least. Plus the faucet has started dripping lately....
Is there any way I could accomplish part of my goal without getting into the complex work you described? For example, what if I left the controls alone but tried to replace just the faucet, for the drip issue? Or if I were able to locate the exact same controls, would it still require all of that work to replace them? I ask that question because the pressure knob is slightly broken, after being overtightened in an attempt to slow the drip. I’m concerned it may eventually break more completely.
I do - I’ve used it a few times. The most involved plumbing I’ve done is installing a bidet, and installing a garbage disposal, though. From all the other comments it seems like this has the potential to get significantly more involved.
The leak got a lot worse pretty suddenly - so it’s now leaking something like a few gallons an hour I’d guess (Though water is the one utility we don’t pay for here, so it’s annoying but not world-endingly urgent). So I decided it was time to get around to this - but when I got to the point in the images, which is right after the escutcheon you mentioned, I was no longer certain how to proceed.
Based on the images, is this still a relatively simple job that I can do with one or two trips to Home Depot? I don’t really know what I’m looking at here - do I grab the white part with pliers and yank it out (Or twist if it’s threaded)? If so, is the rest of your advice still relevant - take the seals to Home Depot and look for as close a match as I can, since I looked and looked and couldn’t find a manufacturer’s name?
As of right now I’ve re-assembled it and turned the water back on. I did get a look at the pipes at least and they seem to be copper. There’s drywall behind the pipes that I would absolutely be willing to let a plumber tear into to avoid tile work. If I did end up calling a plumber, and nothing went wrong, do you happen to know the general ballpark of what it may cost?

I went ahead despite the uncertainty and it all seems to have worked out. Instead of finding replacement seals I replaced the entire cartridge - I was able to find what was a pretty-much-exact match. The only problem I had is the set screw for the escutcheon wouldn’t keep it tight anymore - but I found another that worked. The old cartridge was so loose that I thought the new one was subtly the wrong size when it offered a large amount of resistance going in - because the old one would slide in and out with no resistance whatsoever.

This applies to the insurance of the person I live with too? They recently changed companies and I know one of the questions they had to answer was “How many members of your household are licensed to drive?”. If I got a license their rate should stay the same? It would be their car I’d drive if a situation ever came up where I needed to drive, but I absolutely do not see it becoming an even twice-a-year thing.

I know people always say you don’t need vitamins if you just eat better, or that you can just ask your doctor - but my answer to those are “I don’t want to” and “I can’t afford to”, respectively.
Are vitamins a better-safe-than-sorry option if your diet is probably insufficiently varied to give you everything you need, and you have no strong desire to change that, but you have no way of actually figuring out what’s low or not? Or even then are they probably a waste of money?

I’m not overly surprised. I read the article and know the TV ad claims were dismissed, but the currently running TV ad campaign for BK makes their burgers look ridiculously huge - like larger than the entire box a Big Mac comes in.
Check out the whopper shown at the very start of this ad (screenshot) to see what I mean. When did you last have a burger that was half the width of your torso?
My passwords use the full set of characters I can type by hand on a standard US qwerty keyboard, and I’ve only run into a few sites that have complained and made me use something simpler. PayPal is one of them. Some of the others are Zenni Optical, eBay, and FedLoan.
In total that’s about 8% of my accounts. So the vast majority of sites seem to let you use whatever, at least. I only use 15 characters so I have no comments on length. I am equally annoyed when a new site makes me use simpler passwords.
This but about how almost everything about Lemmy is spun as either good, or better than reddit’s equivalent.
Like the other day I saw a post about how Lemmy’s active users were on the decline, trying to claim that was somehow good for Lemmy. Or back when Lemmy had its /r/place copy, there were plenty of people saying it was better than reddit’s. Basically anything about Lemmy that’s somewhat lacking has people desperately trying to defend it as actually superior.
It borders on delusional at times. Yes Lemmy is good, but reddit is still better in dozens of ways, almost all of them related to user count. And this is coming from one of the people who deleted their reddit account and replaced it with Lemmy cold turkey - I haven’t been back there (except for porn) in almost 8 weeks.
If you have something like a structured settlement from a lawsuit where you receive periodic payments of $X every month, or an annuity that pays out $Y a month, or anything like that - over the entire duration of the settlement or annuity you’ll receive $Z total. I’m pretty sure I’m in a minority here, but I like that lemmy.world is so huge - and think it’s both positive for the lemmyverse and an excellent starting point for new users.
It ties into the new user experience a lot: lemmy.world has a large userbase so most communities will already show up in its All. It’s consistently had new registrations open where many others have closed during large sign-up rushes. It has a thoughtful admin team experienced with running services like this. It’s likely to be around for the very long term and, short of some DDoS attacks, should be fairly reliable.
I know having instances this big is objectively bad if you’re measuring things like how distributed or resilient to disruption the Lemmyverse is, but I think the positives outweigh the negatives on the whole.
If I’m honest, I think the best way to implement an “I know which instance I pick isn’t that important, please just send me to a random one” feature would be to send the user to a random one of the top 5 largest instances. I stopped short of suggesting that because I know it would be deeply unpopular though - enough so that it becomes a bad idea on that merit alone.
