If it’s a region locking issue, have your tried using a VPN that provides a Japan endpoint?

Suggestions for activism campaigns on Lemmy and kbin? (lemmy.blahaj.zone)

I’m working on an activism campaign kicking off next week opposing some bad internet bills in the US – here’s the kbin magazine I just set up, and I might set up a Lemmy community as well if that makes sense. Once things get going, we’ll be sharing links including information and actions people can take....

SeeJayEmm,
@SeeJayEmm@lemmy.procrastinati.org avatar

Do you really need 2 separate communities? Seems like that would just split your fledgling user base.

At the time I was excited about the consolidation of Marvel IP and what it could mean. Avengers, X-Men, Fantastic 4 all under one roof? Exciting!

Now, I’m so burned out on all of it I just stopped watching. They went so hard to get ALL of my time that they now get none of it.

I don’t have any questions, just wanted to say this is cool.

I feel like I’m out of the loop. What does “opinionated” mean in this context?

SeeJayEmm,

I think they live in my building.

What exactly is Misskey supposed to be? (kbin.social)

Most of the other Fediverse platforms are pretty obvious to me as to what they're meant to be alternatives to. Mastodon for Twitter/Threads, PixelFed for Instagram, Lemmy for Reddit, Matrix for Discord/Slack... But I can't quite place MissKey. It doesn't really feel like any other social network I've seen before....

SeeJayEmm,
@SeeJayEmm@lemmy.procrastinati.org avatar

If I were to asked to imagine a microblogging (i.e. Twitter/Masto) service set in 22nd century cyber-punk Japan, MissKey is what I would imagine.

What is you backup tool of choice?

I don’t mean system files, but your personal and work files. I have been using Mint for a few years, I use Timeshift for system backups, but archived my personal files by hand. This got me curious to see what other people use. When you daily drive Linux what are your preferred tools to keep backups? I have thousands of...

Stuff like that is why I ditched duplicati. I had to rebuild the local db that would randomly corrupt itself one too many times.

SeeJayEmm,
@SeeJayEmm@lemmy.procrastinati.org avatar

The thing is when I reseat them they don’t seem loose. I will admit that I have a 1u box sitting on it’s side tho. I need to find some screws that fit the screw hole to secure them or use some electrical tape. Right now it’s mostly friction.

Don’t they already have Azure Linux?

Dynamic DNS domain registrar (kbin.social)

Hey y'all, I've been using my.freenom as my domain registrar for the past six years without too many issues. I've kept it mainly because it has been cheap as balls. However, I am now looking for a registrar that supports dynamic dns and would love to hear your suggestions. The first results that pop up are google and godaddy...

SeeJayEmm,
@SeeJayEmm@lemmy.procrastinati.org avatar

This is my setup. Ddns on the router updates ddns service and all my domain records are a cname to that.

Am I the only one who looks at subscribed instead of All?

SeeJayEmm,
@SeeJayEmm@lemmy.procrastinati.org avatar

Fair enough. You can go into your user settings (on the web). On the “Blocks” tab you can block specific communities (i.e. any NFSW communities you don’t want to see).

Loud grunting and farting noises intensify

This is the one time you should be “loud and proud” about doing your business.

Is there any plugin or way to block forced registration

I have long been tired of the fact that I can not normally use 90% of sites without registration. I’m not going to create an account in order to read a post that interests me right now. But today was the last straw. Fucking Tumblr makes me create an account just to find and read 1 POST. (Sorry for mistakes, I am non English...

Desktop: I was using Duplicati for years but I’ve recently switched to Restic directly to B2. I’m using this powershell script to run it.

Server: I’m also using restic to b2.

I also have a Qnap NAS. I’m synchronizing my replaceable data to crappy old seagate NAS locally. For the irreplaceable data that’s using the Qnap backup client to B2.

Why are we stuck with bash programming language in the shell?

Bash-like scripting has become ubiquitous in operating systems, and it makes me wonder about its widespread adoption despite lacking certain programming conveniences found in other languages. While it may not be the ideal choice for large-scale software development, the bash shell possesses unique features that make it...

Bah! I find it hard to believe that if you ever truly used ps that you’d think it was garbage.

I’m rather fond of it myself.

Email self-hosting

As the title reads, I really want to begin hosting my own email server again. I’m sick of the poor quality of the service providers out there. Damnit all I want/need is a reliable IMAP/SMTP provider. I spent 3 hours getting off of Hostinger and on to Zoho. I just hope Zoho won’t suck. It’s great for now but we’ll see....

I did a test upload of an image I knew had location data and it appeared to be stripped when I viewed the post. That being said I’d like a definitive answer and I do agree with everyone saying, the only way to know for sure is to do it yourself.

Usage for Old Notbook (lemmy.world)

So my wife has a 10 year old low end notbook. 500Gb of storage (HDD), 2GB of GDR3 RAM, and an intel Celeron Processor N2806. It originally came with Win 8, then she “upgraded” to win 10 and after that it was pretty much unusable. I am talking CPU and Ram about 80-90% in idle, opening a browser got everything down to a crawl....

SeeJayEmm,
@SeeJayEmm@lemmy.procrastinati.org avatar

I want to second this. 2 GB of ram is simply unusable and I’m honestly surprised Windows 8 ran passably well. A min of 8 GB of ram and a small SSD will give it a new lease on life.

Can you please ELI5 tmux?

I am fairly familiar with Linux, I’ve been using different distros for some years now and have done some config editing here and there. I am also a web developer and use the terminal quite a lot and so I always stumble on people’s recommendation to use tmux and how good it is, but I never really understood what it does and,...

Twice a day, once in the morning or whenever I get ready for the day and once before bed. I also brush my tongue with a tongue brush/scraper. My current struggle is trying to get flossing into my routine. I know if I keep at it, it’ll get better, but right now it’s hard to want to go to bed with the taste of blood in my mouth.

To all of you who don’t brush in the morning, are you all nose blind? Morning breath is the worst, second only behind coffee+morning breath. Have some consideration for your fellow humans.

3rd party apps having issues since the attack?

Since some instances were compromised earlier I’ve been able to access the desktop and mobile sites (just had to log in again) but can’t get third party apps to work. How many people here have actually used XMPP?

With all the current discussion about the threat that Instagram Threads has on the Fediverse and that article about how Google Embrace Extend Extinguished XMPP, I was left very confused, since that was the first time I’ve heard that Gchat supported XMPP or what XMPP actually is, and I’ve had my personal Gmail since beta (no,...

Recommend me a good and cheap VPS.

I currently use a Droplet from DigitalOcean which gives me 1 gb of RAM, 25 gb of storage and a bandwidth limit of 1 TB which is priced at 6 dollars per month, I think this might be a good offer, but I also think I’m overpaying because the only thing that I use from that is Wireguard to get around CGNAT at my home (which I...

Remember when Microsoft got raked over the coals for this kind of behavior, in the 90s?

SeeJayEmm,

Gmail does this too. I’m pretty sure my adblocker handles them on my PC but I see them on the mobile app all the time.

We use o365 for work so I’m seeped in that environment already. I tried using o365 for my personal email for about 3 months and finally gave up and went back to gmail.

How many people out there are shitting on Edge (in many ways rightfully so) while using Chrome, which does the exact same crap.

SeeJayEmm,
@SeeJayEmm@lemmy.procrastinati.org avatar

Oh. I’m not arguing. They all have scummy methods to try and enforce their app over someone else’s. Microsoft is kinda the worst about it tho.

I was just commenting on how cyclic it all is. Firefox was bloated and IE just overall sucked. Chrome came around touting how blazing fast it was with it’s V8 javascript engine but once they had market share the bloat crept in. Then msft came out with Edge, which was lean and mean and actually a nice browser. But the bloat didn’t even creep this time, it just poured in.

I’m hoping since Firefox isn’t part of the FAANG that the bloat will be kept at bay.

Restic to b2. Works great. I’ve also used duplicati in the past to b2 as well.

Sorry I’m late to the party, but what’s this about a 20 character limit? My searches are coming up empty.

SeeJayEmm,

The way you worded that I thought it was a server name limit. That would have been awful for me. Thanks for clearing it up.
