The Creator is next-level sci-fi. So why isn't it being promoted that way? (www.msn.com)

The response from critics who’ve gotten a chance to see The Creator at preview screenings has been overwhelmingly positive (on social media at least, full reviews are still embargoed). The film will probably need that good word of mouth when it opens in theaters on September 29, because the rest of the marketing campaign for...

Much like the YT advertising for the movie, this ad post tells me absolutely nothing about the movie or why I should watch it.

Does anybody know what happened to lemmy.villa-straylight.social?

It was my home to my account. I didn’t catch any announcement it would be going down. 2 weeks ago the website started throwing errors (50* internal server errors) and since a week it is completely unreachable. There are still DNS records resolving the domain, but the site seems completely gone.

Yeah but it’s only content for communities you sub to. I’ve been running this instance since about 2 weeks after the rexodus and I’m sitting at about 14GB.

That being said I would like some additional tools to manage data retention.

Edit: 14 GB not 25.

SeeJayEmm,
@SeeJayEmm@lemmy.procrastinati.org avatar

The single hardest part of running a self hosted instance is the initial setup. There’s very little maintenance involved if you set it up right. Storage and bandwidth are going to be directly related to what you sub to. If it’s all images and videos sure. I’m sitting at about 14GB storage right now and my bw is pretty modest.

I can certainly see people getting bored with it and abandoning their servers tho. But I doubt it’s the upkeep.

Edit: 14 GB not 25.

I think maybe a lesson to be taken here is to be wary of servers that don’t have alternate modes of communications.

This is the first I’m hearing of it and I’m so confused. Is this just at character creation? Why was it removed?

Is this mod for people who are triggered because the field isn’t free form and the only choices are he/she/they? Or people who are triggered because the sheer existence of a they option is an anathema to their existence?

Even the argument in the comments is so vague it sheds no light.

I’ve been geeking about since the 80s. BASIC on an Atari, msdos, windows, vax, *bsd, Linux. Done a ton of scripting in a bunch of languages.

Right now, I prefer powershell above anything else. But, honestly it’s all personal preference.

This is just part of the script now.

Be a VPS for other people?

I have friends and relatives that would like to do some memory and compute intensive tasks, but lack the hardware locally. I have loads of ram doing nothing and a little compute to spare. Is there a way for me to set up some service accessible to them that would allow them to spin up VMs, similar to Linode or DigitalOcean? I...

SeeJayEmm,
@SeeJayEmm@lemmy.procrastinati.org avatar

I know you’re trying to go full self service but that’s likely overkill and given your limited resources you should maintain some control.

How about setting up resource pools in proxmox? You can permission accounts so that your dad and your friend only have access to manage the vms in their resource pool. You would need to create the vms/containers for them and assign to the pool but that would be the extent of your involvement. But that would allow you to maintain a certain level of control over your environment.

To be clear you’d just be creating the vm. They could do the actual os installs and whatnot provided you permission the pool properly.

Nearly 400k people are using the mod StarUI Inventory.

I love the overall experience, the vibe, the story, etc… but just like Skyrim the UI is trash. Bethesda sucks at UI, especially inventory UI. SkyUI was mandatory when I played Skyrim. I feel the same about Starfield. Same shit inventory mgmt. I still love the game. Hate the UI. I’m on the gamepass version and haven’t even looked to see if I can mod it yet (I’m assuming I can’t).

SeeJayEmm,
@SeeJayEmm@lemmy.procrastinati.org avatar

Eh to each their own. I very much prefer the inventory in a tabular format with all the useful details, up front, that I can sort by. And I’m very much a fan of the value/weight column.

Does "Selfhosted" mean you actually have a server at home?

I’m trying to better understand hosting a Lemmy Instance. Lurking discussions it seems like some people are hosting from the Cloud or VPS. My understanding is that it’s better to futureproof by running your own home server so that you have the data and the top most control of hardware, software etc. My understanding is that...

SeeJayEmm,

I started at home and then moved into a vps for my lemmy instance. I decided I don’t want all that public traffic hitting my home ip.

Teraform Mars and Venus and do my best to setup a truly democratic post scarcity society.

I think the hard part will be creating systems to keep any one person or group from gaming the system for power and getting them to eventually become self sufficient so I don’t need to babysit humanity for all eternity.

SeeJayEmm,
@SeeJayEmm@lemmy.procrastinati.org avatar

I mean, alot would need to change. I don’t mean take today’s society and just plop them down on Mars. But also, truly democratic. But, look at where having people making the decisions for us had gotten us.

I’m talking about a society where holding an office is a civic duty, not a job or a life time aspiration, but most matters of policy would be to a consensus, not the job of some career politician who’s more concerned with their career or wealth than what’s truly the best for everyone. And given this is a post scarcity society, there should be the same drive for wealth since that power dynamic shouldn’t exist anymore.

Did you try doing any searching on the error message before posting here? That’s an SSL error. Most likely due to you using a dns name that doesn’t match the cert being provided by the server.

SeeJayEmm,
@SeeJayEmm@lemmy.procrastinati.org avatar

That’s odd. Do you not get the advanced option to proceed anyway and load the page?

SeeJayEmm,
@SeeJayEmm@lemmy.procrastinati.org avatar

Also I would consider trying to use openssl to see what’s actually happening since the browser can sometimes obfuscate things in it’s attempts to be helpful.

openssl s_client -connect :443

I’m with @SheeEttin in that the server should fail to start if there was no certificate to load. It’s more likely that the server is providing an invalid cert. Using the openssl command above would help you identify that.

Having not played FO4 that doesn’t sound intuitive. I’ll know for sure once I try making an outpost. Of course nothing in game has told me why I’d want an outpost other than a place to stuff companions.

Well, my whole setup comes from the fact that I wanted to cosplay as an enterprise environment

I feel that. Experimenting I get, but I’d never have it be my primary vm backing storage. Esp. not on a 1Gb network, no ups, no redundancy.

Someone else suggested local vm storage and a PBS VM on the TrueNas box. I think that’s a solid solution to consider.

Because that’s the standard and that is the wage I negotiated and my bi-weekly checks are that number/26. I didn’t negotiate a per-payperiod rate.

It’s what my taxation is based on.

It’s what all my credit applications ask for.

Also, what you make and what you take home are really quite variable based on circumstance between 2 people making the same base wage. Retirement contributions, health care premiums, taxes, and other deductions vary from person to person.

For salaried employees it’s the standard metric by which wages are measured. You don’t need to guess anything. That’s the standard.

For hourly employees, that would be your hourly rate. Since hours can be variable and overtime is a thing your yearly rate would be variable too.

Seriously there’s nothing to guess.

Also, for what it’s worth, I would think if op was in a place that used monthly as the standard they wouldn’t have posted this complaint. If that’s not the case I’m confused by the point of this post?
