Nothing will make me watch this thing live. The ability to fast forward is essential for this show and I do so through 80% of the duration.

QubaXR,
@QubaXR@lemmy.world avatar

Yea, I typically also don’t care much for their live performances, the orchestra and “funny commercial interruptions” not to mention endless Game Pass ads.

QubaXR,
@QubaXR@lemmy.world avatar

Yummmm. I mean, no yumm, but so pretty.

QubaXR,
@QubaXR@lemmy.world avatar

Truly BREAKING NEWS lol. A sequel everyone knows is coming will be announced with a teaser we are announcing now. Must read the story now and stay informed!!!

Ever noticed how in America we tend to come up with abbreviations for any word people don’t feel like learning to spell? Renaissance, Mayonnaise… even Through. (Ren, Mayo and Thru, respectively).

Anyway, awesome costumes, love both armors equally.

QubaXR,
@QubaXR@lemmy.world avatar

I guess my beef is not with the abbreviations, but more with the fact that short versions completely replace long ones. I can’t recall the last time I heard someone say words like mayonnaise or influenza.

QubaXR,
@QubaXR@lemmy.world avatar

Ok, that’s a good one. I think I might have fallen down with the good old bias: everything before my time is antique and everything newer than my time is an abomination. Thanks for slapping some sense into the old grumpy guy :)

QubaXR,
@QubaXR@lemmy.world avatar

Yea, Warner Brothers got one of the Wachowskis to direct Matrix 4. 'member?

Near Seattle and I see them everywhere these days.

We had two trees die of “sunstroke” a year ago, so it’s nice to see underground life continues!

Look up the “theory of American exceptionalism”. In short there is a very strong belief here that America is one of a kind and things that may work for others simply don’t apply here.

Explains why the US stocks a 12hr clock, messed up month/day/year mission, imperial measurement and a ton of other things that any foreigner will find anywhere from quirky to infuriating.

IMHO the exceptionalism theory is a b.s. lazy way of keeping things conservative and unchanged and shutting down any discussion of uncomfortable progress.

When do you think there will be an Android app that could accurately perform real time object recognition?

In Star Wars Rebels, there was an E-XD-series infiltrator droid that could quickly take inventory of everything in a Rebel warehouse. With the advanced object recognition capabilities of modern AI, it’s only a matter of time before an app for Android can accurately and rapidly identify and store objects in real-time from video...

GPT 4 with image uploads gets pretty damn close, though it’s not real-time and processed server side

According to the logic of this video it costs Valve $0 to produce steam decks. Jeez, the Internet is so filled up with these unresearched, amateurish attempts at journalism.

QubaXR,

All these services from Netflix to Uber are built on understandable foundations. They lose a ton of money in their first phase in order to gain subscribers but sooner or later start looking to turn profit out at least stop the bleeding.

I can already hear the outcry of surprised gamers when Microsoft cracks the whip on their Game Pass pricing, and there will be little to no alternative because they bought out most of the studios and publishers.

Not by chance the title of this article is written in such a way as to suggest there are some revelations regarding Trump dismembering someone. I hate clickbait.

QubaXR,
@QubaXR@lemmy.world avatar

Get out of my head. Came here to post pretty much the same words.

QubaXR,

Watched it a few days ago. Great talk, as always.

Is that a legit site? Looking at the submissions, while all of them are raster, if only call a few as pixel art.

Jeez! Terrifying. Sounds like something from It’s Always Sunny!

That hall of fame Reddit thread where a guy announced he will try heroin just one time, then comes back to explain how the experience was and how he will try again. Over the course of many posts we see persons entire life unravel as other posters scream of the top of their lungs for him to stop.

Never figured if it was real or scripted, but hella effective.

Try meeting people and hanging out more. You have a notion of Love being this flash feeling that you fall into… that’s not what love is, that’s Attraction.

Love can start small and grow over time as you spend time together, learn each other’s idiosyncrasies, quirks and habits. Don’t expect love will be this huge earth shattering revelation. These can happen and are fun, but once again - Attraction, not love. May turn into love over time, or burn bright and fast.

Don’t let your imaginary character stop you from spending time with real people. Just be ready for them not to be like her, and try to be curious about what other types of humans are out there by spending meaningful time with them. They may never match your imaginary girl on many levels, but you’ll find they have other qualities on offer, and perhaps some of them will become a part of your life too.

Worst case scenario is you will learn more about people.

[Discussion] Project Hail Mary - Andy Weir (Spoilers) (lemmy.world)

We are two weeks into the month of September now. I think this might be a reasonable amount of time for some readers to have completed this book if they started early this month. At least I finished it last week. I’ll leave this thread pinned for the rest of the month and next weekend I’ll create the poll for the next book...

QubaXR,
@QubaXR@lemmy.world avatar

Uh, such a tease! I was scrolling through Lemmy when I came across this article. As the first half of the cover image entered my screen I got all hyped seeing Andy Weir’s name, thinking it’s a new book announcement. Then I realized it’s Hail Mary.

Great book. I think Weir’s genre of choice is: slightly self deprecating, really smart specialist is left alone in the face of great adversity and works to overcome it using science and creative thinking. And you know what? I’m a fan of that genre.

QubaXR,
@QubaXR@lemmy.world avatar

Great example!

QubaXR,
@QubaXR@lemmy.world avatar

Interesting take, but I don’t think I can agree. While typical American humor is often based on question-answer/punchline structure, many comedians managed to excel at purposefully breaking it.

Think about Joe Cera, John Wilson, Nathan Fielder even Jon Benjamin or David Cross. They are all very funny (it the audience that vibes with their style), yet usually avoid the idea of buildup-punchline.

For a more universal surreal humor you need look no further than the granddaddies of the entire school: The Monty Python crew. They often went out of their way to ridicule the idea of a punchline and were/are some of the funniest people in history.

(You could always argue that humor does not equal jokes I guess, but these were just my 2 cents)

QubaXR,
@QubaXR@lemmy.world avatar

Great way of thinking about it.

QubaXR,
@QubaXR@lemmy.world avatar

Agreed! Knowledge does not take away wonder, while ignorance can breed fear.

QubaXR,

Too many artists perceived the world in us vs them terms. Art or science. Too this I say: da Vinci. He considered himself an engineer, not an artist but married both in a fascinating way.

(Educated in fine arts myself, but damn if I don’t love science, logic and even a good snippet of code every now and then)

I enjoy room temperature coffee more than piping hot or iced.

Most people I know drink their coffee piping hot and act all disgusted at the idea of letting it cool down first. They would pour it away and brew a new one rather than drink the lukewarm stuff. And if you ask a barrista around these parts to not steam the milk but pour it into the coffee cold, you’re often met with indignant...

QubaXR,
@QubaXR@lemmy.world avatar

Same here mate. Both coffee and tea. The coffee can be warm, the tea is best to me when at or below room temperature.

I drink both “straight” - no sweeteners, sugars, flavoring, milk or cream.

You do you and since it’s not hurting nobody, there is no reason for anyone to tell you otherwise.

Cars are not nearly as popular in Japan (or, in reality anywhere in the world) as they are in the US. Many houses and apartments don’t have garages, and the majority of the population uses (excellent) public transit.

Unless you’re into a wide stroke gestural drawing, large Wacoms may be unnecessary for you. My illustrator wife just sold hers in favor of an iPad with Procreate and Astropad.

Wacom pen displays have great screens and pens, but are unwieldy, loud (fans tend to break, too), finicky and run on weird drivers that may or may not just mess up your day.

Really bad experience for a product costing multiple thousands of dollars.

QubaXR,

eBay has become the place for scalpers to sell overpriced wares, after they emptied store shelves. From toilet paper to graphics cards, that’s where the buyout stock, sell for profit happened.

Now even without shortages, this philosophy persists at eBay. Nothing to lose for them, free money to make on uninformed buyers.

Worst case they end up not selling and can possibly return items for full refund.

Scummery at it’s finest

QubaXR,
@QubaXR@lemmy.world avatar

Baldurs Gate 3 on Steam Deck is basically turning electricity into heat with some frames produced as a side effect :)

The lack of actual continuous gameplay being shown is kinda alarming this close to release

I mean, we never got more than half a minute of gameplay before they jumped to something totally different. Nothing to gauge what the actual gameplay loop is like and how all those systems feed into each other. The bigger previews are all kept under closed doors and hush-hush....

QubaXR,
@QubaXR@lemmy.world avatar

I’m not expecting much myself. Another Skyrim or Fallout launch most likely.

To give (dubious) credit where it’s due though - Bethesda has a history of not providing pre-release copies. Doom is a good example: the press was not given copies before day 1, yet the game came out really good.

(In all honestly I suspect they did that for the very reason to be able to say later: don’t panic, all’s good, remember, doom was the same)

In its first week, Immortals of Aveum had a peak count of just 751 players on Steam. (steamdb.info)

After 5 years in development and heavily pushing Unreal Engine 5 technologies, Immortals of Aveum was met with a whopping 751 player peak. For reference, Forspoken was considered a flop but still had over 12,000 players peak total. This may be the biggest flop of the year.

QubaXR,
@QubaXR@lemmy.world avatar

It does not help that it shares the namesake and general identity aesthetic with a failed Immortals movie franchise.

But yes, it’s obvious a ton of work went into this title, but at the same time I can’t think of a single reason to pick it up, especially over the games already out or coming out soon.

@QubaXR@lemmy.world avatar

In reality all AIs avatars look like your average comicon/DnD convention visitor.

QubaXR,
@QubaXR@lemmy.world avatar

Aww shit, is this now going to be a thing?

QubaXR,
@QubaXR@lemmy.world avatar

It’s such a striking image. I have last seen it probably somewhere in the early 80s when my age was still single digit long and either my parents were reading Moomins to me, or I already knew how to read myself. Regardless, 40 odd years later, the style was immediately recognizable even before scrolling down to reveal a soft round Moomin at the bottom.

Welp, we had Friday, didn’t we? (Last week there was an excessive heat wave that kept everyone indoors. Friday was lovely and then on Saturday the smoke came in)
