What an idiotic comparison.

.

…is incredibly reductive and combative. The world needs less of that, not more.

Be the change, homie.

In any case, do recall that many of us are in enterprise environments where we're not the only decision makers. Plus, FOSS without reliable support contracts isn't workable for many use cases. If something in FOSS goes tits up none of my customers will be satisfied with the great discussion I had with the devs about it and how they'll totally get to it after Furrycon.

You might not be paying for software in money but you're going to pay for it, one way or another.

Cylusthevirus,

Cool, I'ma go tell my wife something we disagree on is idiotic and we'll see how it goes. Should be fine, right? It's not combative!

I see this sentiment expressed more often by tankies, enlightened centrists, and Krazy Konservative Kommenters than mainstream media sources. Usually in reference to economic policy (and in fairness, the differences there are pretty subtle if we're looking at the mainstream).

What I'm seeing in media is an attempt to listen to "both sides." It's just that one side has grown more and more detached from reality, so airing their crazy unchallenged alongside a more normal perspective makes it look like the sides are on equal rhetorical footing. It's like what you get in a debate with Donny T and Biden.

Biden: Normal liberal policy ideas, maybe we leave the queer folks alone, maybe we do a little something on climate, etc.

SmallHandsOrangeBoy: Incoherent frothing about the immigrants, the gays, the "woke mind virus"

Reporters: And here are the candidate's positions, clearly no further comment or observation is required. Best not question the froth lest we be accused of bias!

Feels like a lot of reporters are either unused to dealing with a rising fascist bloc, hampered by corporate meddling, or complicit.

I can't speak to a lot of these subgenres but power metal? Hehehe.

Dragonforce - Through Fire and Flames. Not just a meme, actually a great song and very technical.

Powerwolf - Blessed & Possessed. Werewolves that work for the Catholic Church? I have no idea how that's supposed to work but I'd read the book.

Sabaton - To Hell and Back. Sabaton writes a lot of songs about historical battles.

Powermetal has rather a lot of narrative ballads in it.

Oh, I've got a good folk metal band too:

Eluveitie - The Call of the Mountain. I love all the different instruments they use.

Alestorm - Drink. How the hell did I forget Alestorm? Who wants pirate metal?

Bloodywood - Dana Dan. Indian folk metal rap/rock ... with a lot of English? I don't know what's going on here but it's such a unique blend.

Someone mentioned Nightwish and here's my favorite song of theirs:

Nightwish - Nemo

My last game got cancelled because 2 players couldn't manage to show up consistently and I am STILL upset about it. I showed up! I even brought snacks.

Now I think I'm going to have to either run one myself or go back to desperately searching for a decent group.

I have a theory that moral traits, like many other things in nature, follow a normal distribution. If I'm right, we can make some estimates of who would violate social rules given the chance. The bottom 5% of the distribution are going to do some terrible things. About 45% are going to be kind of shit, maybe not terrible. The remainder will be some level of decent to pretty well behaved, actually. Admittedly, that depends on what we think the mean level of morality really is. Having observed many a group of kids playing, I don't think it's that bad. Honestly that's why so many teenage edgelords and doomers get told to go touch grass; reality will almost never be as bleak as we think it will be. There's a well documented cognitive bias towards negative events, but it IS a bias.

The Boys isn't realistic so much as it's a deliberate deconstruction of the genre and a bit of speculative fiction ("What if Superman was a sociopath" seems to be the question it asks). It has elements of satire too, so it's not really concerned with being fair so much as creating the story conditions that allow it to show us its narrative.

If you want a more "realistic" superhero show I think the 2012 movie Chronicle is more plausible. And yeah it does go badly for some but not for others.

I think there's a kernel of truth to it. A poor first impression followed by a subsequent recovery tells us that a game could have been good at launch, but was rushed out for various reasons. This practice of forcing the public to pay to be beta testers for a half finished product should be punished.

And nothing's going to erase a garbage launch. It will always have been garbage and the shit launch will always be a part of the conversation about the game. Hence why we still talk about it even in games that have recovered.

You can't patch history.

I got to visit Scotland once and was told in no uncertain terms that we were not to refer to the weather as "cold."

It might be brisk. It might even be bracing. But never cold. Has to be something to it.

Might as well score a Steam Deck for the cost of a modern console, and then you're not paying monthly for multiplayer and premium costs for games and you get mobility in the mix.

Having been involved in one of those wars, from a grunt's perspective it mostly feels like this:

  1. Follow FC to assigned position.
  2. Observe slide show because there's a zillion people in this system and time dilation kicked in.
  3. Push butan when told over comms.
  4. Explode for some reason.
  5. Try to escape in pod, get podded because the UI is hard to use and TiDi makes everything weird.

Or my other favorite experience, ratting for money.

  1. Fly expensive ship into system.
  2. Target NPC ships in overview, blow them up while orbiting something.
  3. Get attacked by pirates which is either one guy multi-boxing 12 ewar frigates or gang of roving pirates nobody bothered to deal with.
  4. Lose expensive ship that nullifies somewhere between .5 and 2 hours of boring ratting.

Stealth bombing was pretty fun, I'll admit. But everything else was a bunch of neat ideas saddled by the most profoundly boring implementations imaginable. It truly is spreadsheets in space, and not just for all the math, but because one of the most important UI elements for the longest time literally was a spreadsheet. And then they did this.

I did a version of this during the height of the pandemic where I hung up a big old clothesline in the front yard and pinned dozens of full size bars to it. Always interesting to see which ones get taken; Twix and KitKat proved the most popular. And the line wasn't empty at night's end! Our neighborhood kids are sweet.

I set out to create a cyber ninja and aside from being unable to source good clothing options, it works as designed. That is to say, on very hard I die if fuck up with more than 2 bad guys around, sandie or no, so that feels right. I think optical camo was over-nerfed, but meh.

But if you combine the air dash, double jump, a katana, a throwing knife, and a few other things, it slaps. You feel very cool indeed when it all comes together.

Hacking feels more dangerous now. The way the hacks work means that when you go hot and start directly damaging your opponents you can't just wait for everyone to die, esp early on. That said Netrunners are still gods, just gods that occasionally get someone to run at them yelling before they keel over at your feet. And you can still wipe 4 dudes out almost instantly from a long distance away.

Have not tried other routes yet because I hate playing through the beginning.

Whenever Bible Thumpers go on about tots and pears on this topic, quote two verses at em'.

Matthew 6:5-6

“And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 6 But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

James 2:26

As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead.

Nothing shuts em' up quite like beating them at their own game.
