I mean, I doubt it's exactly what he wanted. The traffic is nice and all, but it's not like investors don't have eyes. They know he's hated, it's just a question of what that means for the IPO and ongoing profitability of the business.

I'm sorry but this sentiment is so utterly detached from the technical capabilities and general engagement of the average layman that it bears a response.

Tech savvy people have this awful habit of calling anyone not in our specific field an idiot when they don't do things our preferred way, and it's not a good look. Those people aren't the weird ones, we are. And if you're the sort of person who thinks you've elevated yourself above the commoners because you don't use Google's stuff ... yeah, that and 5 bucks will get you a latte. There are oceans of professional expertise you're not privvy to, and unless you really think you're doing better than everyone at everything, a little humility, temperance, and grace for others is warranted.

Those with parents who hold opposite political views than you, how do you go about disagreeing?

To be more specific, my parents raised my siblings and me to “respect” them, saying "yes sir, and “no ma’am” to everything they said. Spankings, all of that. Typical super conservative evangelical parents. Before I learned better, I was that way too. I went to college and since then have embraced the left more and...

This is solid advice. The importance of setting and enforcing boundaries cannot be overstated, particularly when things are emotionally charged.

I've made it very clear that I won't talk with my parents about politics. Mom can't help taking the odd pot shot, but I just deflect or ignore it. I don't engage anymore because there is zero benefit to engaging.

We talk about the things we can talk about and let the rest go. If that becomes not enough for them or they can't respect boundaries, we scale back contact until they do.

and that I have not been wrong to adjust my view of Republican friends and family members during the past few years

Few things have hurt more than watching people I love, people who raised me, cheer for the January 6 mob. I thought the anti-vax bullshit I've seen crop up was the worst, but that took the cake.

Trump Promotes Threatening Video: 'We Are Going to Do Things to You That Have Never Been Done Before' (www.thenewcivilrightsmovement.com)

Overnight Donald Trump promoted a video featuring an extreme close-up photo of his face in black and white, and audio of him making an obvious threat: “If you f— around with us, if you do something bad to us, we are going to do things to you that have never been done before.” Trump “retruthed” […]

Natalie's videos explained trans issues to me in a way that completely changed my mind about the whole topic. I'm very grateful to her for putting out that content in a way that my brain could digest.

This is like asking "can you trust a wrench?" It's a tool. You can trust it to operate within its parameters. The problem is that most of us don't understand what those parameters are; it's a black box. So yeah, if you're gonna use it, use it for low stakes applications are prepare to exercise considerable oversight ... like a harbor freight table saw.

I hate the usage of AI here too, but I think this is a fight we've already lost. Stupid LLM algorithms.

I enjoy League mechanically, played a lot, but it just got to be such a net negative that I can't do it anymore. I enjoy trying my best to win and I adore that feeling of a team coming together, but the toxicity was just too much.

Cylusthevirus,

I think a lot of games struggle in their final act. Often it feels like cut content forces writers and developers into conclusions that are unsatisfying because they feel rushed and incomplete. So maybe you're just playing the good bits? Think of the last game you played where the ending felt truly satisfying. Doesn't help that everyone's trying to shoehorn live service microtransaction bullshit into their games.

Cylusthevirus,
@Cylusthevirus@kbin.social avatar

Did they just like, throw a bunch of random philosophy bullshit onto a meme? Feels like this was generated by an AI or something lol.

Cylusthevirus,

You can still see consequences from yelling "fire" in a crowded theater. Let's not pretend that there can be no reasonable constraints on these things.

Ps. WHERE IS THE WELL REGULATED MILITIA?

What does racism have to do with cosmic horror?

Cylusthevirus,
@Cylusthevirus@kbin.social avatar

The entirety of human civilization is deeply rooted in racism, so yeah, makes sense. What I'd like to know is what's especially bad about cosmic horror specifically as depicted in, say, The Mountains of Madness.

Cylusthevirus,
@Cylusthevirus@kbin.social avatar

Ah, yes I can see that for sure. I wondered if you were arguing that the whole genre was racist because it rests on the idea of "fear of the unknown" as some folks seem to be. Lovecraft himself was a shithead, but that's kind of why I enjoy stuff like Lovecraft Country so much.

Wife's boss is on a power trip. Is this legal?

My wife works in a restaurant, and the power-tripping manager has instituted a new policy where all shift changes must be approved by management. I think that is reasonable enough, but they’re also asking the originally-scheduled employee why they are switching shifts, then approving or denying based on the answer....

Cylusthevirus,
@Cylusthevirus@kbin.social avatar

Always give your boss as little information as possible. They aren't entitled to it and are much more likely to use it against you.

Do you prefer PC or laptop? (freeonlinesurveys.com)

I was having a friendly discussion with someone this morning about PC and Laptops for work/education stuff, he suggested that I could use a chromebook for all this stuff and this would be a good idea and make things easier. I strongly disagreed with this, mainly because I hate laptops, the keyboard and touchpad make me angry and...

Cylusthevirus,
@Cylusthevirus@kbin.social avatar

PC is short for personal computer, which includes both laptop and desktop form factors.

But to answer the question, I generally prefer a desktop because you can upgrade them and work on them more easily.

Cylusthevirus,
@Cylusthevirus@kbin.social avatar

Some things are private but not illegal, like taking a shit. There are zero good reasons to intrude on that scene and anyone who tries is suspect. Who cares if you have something to hide? Why are we ok with letting a megacorporation give us a digital colonoscopy when we're only trying to live our lives?

Cylusthevirus,
@Cylusthevirus@kbin.social avatar

"The left" aka the rest of the developed world, but OK boss. Ignore the cartoonishly obvious corruption. I guess justices can just accept huge gifts from whoever, business before the court or not. Because it's not specifically called out in the constitution it's all good! Ethics is canceled, we can all go home. Cool, cool.

Cylusthevirus,
@Cylusthevirus@kbin.social avatar

Yep, it's pretty bad. It's changing though, just slowly.

Cylusthevirus,

Was raised on Rush Limbaugh starting in the 5th grade, did the edgy Libertarian thing and now ... now Bernie Sanders is like the only guy in the country that makes any sense. And now I get to argue with most of my family and many of my friends or just never talk politics or walk away completely. And I get to reckon with all the harm I've caused.

Know what's fun? Constantly realizing what a piece of shit you've been. Feeling incredibly stupid for not realizing it sooner. Wondering how you can possibly atone.

I imagine it's worth it in healthcare contexts, but depending on cost it might be worth it for businesses too. If you run the risk of severe disruptions to critical services, the argument for installing these in your building isn't hard to make.

This could apply to any number of countries and it's getting kinda tedious. It's like a bunch of American teenagers just learned that their history books aren't telling the whole story and literally cannot stop talking about it. You hit college level history, congratulations, good for you champ.

Found the tankie.

Cylusthevirus,

That's just regular old black and white thinking. Every time you've decided that an "ism" is the root of all the world's evils you've lost the game. Doesn't matter what it is. The "isms" are never the source of the trouble; that would be humanity itself.

There should really be a cap on the percentage of a national (or the global) economy that a single company can directly influence. Otherwise they get too big, start doing hellish stuff, and it's very difficult for consumers to respond to their choices. If every choice in an aisle at the store is owned by like 3 companies, that's a problem.
