enzoesco, to fediverse Italian

Are you curious about Mastodon? Mammoth, the Google-funded app*, could be the app that will use all of you to destroy the Fediverse

I would like to know what you think of this post published here in Italian: is it exaggerated or is there a grain of truth?

@fediverse

Are you curious about Mastodon? Mammoth, the Google-funded app, could be the app that will use all of you to destroy the Fediverse*

Dear friends of decentralization, welcome to the end of the world!

One of the most serious limitations of Mastodon (not to mention other obscene software, such as the cumbersome Friendica or the toy Misskey) is that... it sucks!

No it's not true, it doesn't suck, in fact it has improved the ergonomics a lot, but compared to commercial social networks it still seems to be several years behind.

At the moment only Bluesky seems to do worse, but in that case we are actually talking about a dead fetus kept artificially alive by American journalists, so it's a bit out of competition...

** Did you want to know why I titled it “funded by Google”?*

The app is definitely well made and has some interesting new features.

The updated app will introduce a number of features designed to appeal to former X users, including personalized suggestions of accounts to follow, to help you rebuild your network on Mastodon, as well as curated “smart lists” that help you find interesting conversations that take place on Mastodon.

Mammoth will also integrate with the editorial staff of Flipboard, the social magazine app for curating news on topics from across the web through accounts such as News , Tech , Culture and Science. And it is a partner with Newsmast , another curator of news and communities on Mastodon, as well as Press.coop, which imports feeds from popular news websites into Mastodon. These integrations allow Mammoth 2 to create a number of other “smart lists,” including those for News, World News, Business, Tech, Environment, and Nature.

From Sarah Perez's article published December 7 on TechCrunch

In short, to use Mastodon more easily, users will give up the most important aspect offered by Mastodon: decentralization!

That's how: following other people's lists, integrating rubbish like Newsmast (one of the projects most oriented towards the Anglospheric centralization of news which is starting to have some singers even in the Italian Fediverse), everything we always wanted to avoid by migrating from Twitter to Mastodon!

I won't hide from you that seeing Mammoth become so popular in some way in the last few days is truly disheartening: a campaign of a few thousand dollars is enough to infest the entire Fediverse with the editorials of a small US company.

By the way, many of Mammoth's features had already been implemented by IceCubes . Not to mention, IceCubes has always been free and open source!

Mammoth has also become open source. But when you launch it, the first thing it does (how horrible!) is make you automatically follow their account (I got visual messages on the new features screen, but I wasn't able to stop the following on that screen) and they a very shitty icon similar to that of Threads.

Most concerning though is their SmartLists feature: send your handle to their official moth.social instance, which uses a Mastodon fork that serves the “Smart Lists” feature. One can reasonably see how this undermines decentralization…

In the photo, Hänsel and Gretel appreciating the ergonomics of the apps financed by BigTech

A final bitter consideration? It's not true that we always want to ruin the beautiful things we have. But unfortunately it is true that we always have this overwhelming desire to help anyone who wants to ruin what we have. As long as he is rich, beautiful and powerful…

alex,

people really hate when developers are paid for their work huh

alex,

I’m meeting with my local work union tonight to suggest a citywide Wikipedia half-day event where we improve pages about labour law and the history of work unions. I hope they’ll like the pitch!

Categorizing themes and visions of solarpunk fiction [from Solarpunk Stories] (solarpunkstories.substack.com)

I saw an effort at trying to systematize solarpunk elsewhere that felt a bit confused, but it reminded me of this. I’m not typically inclined to try to taxonamize everything, but I’ll admit that the appeal definitely isn’t lost on me. This felt useful.

alex,

Cottage with more people or rooted with fewer people.

alex,

I’d recommend donating to your national Wikimedia chapter if you aren’t in the US. They’re not funded by megacorps and they often struggle financially, and they’re the ones doing a lot of work on the ground.

alex,

Many aren’t good examples, that’s kind of the point of the article.

alex,

What’s the point of this post? Outside of slightly worsening everyone’s day, that is?

Inside me there are two wolves; One is a quasi-alcoholic slob with a home office, while the other is an overpaid and demotivated IT "professional" who hates his employer.

First thing I did upon starting my work day was to open a beer. Just one out of two purchased for the occasion of yesterday being payday. I then proceeded to skim through my inbox and appointments for the day, concluding that beyond migrating this one production system over to the new VPN there’s not going to be a whole lot...

alex,

I hope the new job is going to work out for you!

Personally, I’m pretty unhappy in my company, but I’ve mostly been using the free time to do things that I can be fulfilled with - especially Wikipedia editing, which can be done while remaining available for the colleagues and even looking like I’m working because I’m online :)

Maybe this could be some kind of partial solution for you as well?

As for the alcohol, I’m so sorry for this and I hope things will get better. If you feel like you’re losing control, I highly recommend checking out if you can get professional help, by a specialist who won’t judge and is there just for that.

Good luck!

alex,

Many people choose get baptized later in life, usually after conversion.

alex,

Yeah, almost mentioned them but they wouldn’t be covered by the Pope’s decisions, but you’re right - and I assume in some catholic communities they might have similar practices even though that’s a minority case.

alex,

Yes, that’s what I’m saying :)

alex,

Congrats on the run, and great news for your wife! The physical effort may also simply mean you’re gaining muscle, which is heavier than fat :)

alex,

hahaha you’d be surprised! I don’t know why but when I started doing more sports and eating well, I gained weight (a little bit) for an entire month and then lost A LOT in the span of a couple of weeks. The beginning can be weird while your body adjusts.

alex,

alex,

I’m a terrible DIYer but I have to say: I put up two Ikea bookshelves by myself, which is progress. Baby steps.

alex,

Yes, especially books I want to lend to friends because I thought they deserved attention.

alex,

Les crossposts c’est fait pour ça :)

alex,

alex,

I’m really grateful for this series!

alex,

(I don’t think that’s it - it’s 9.99 if you’re paying on desktop and 12.99 with the Apple tax (also applied to Android), but applies to your whole account.)

alex, (edited )

alex,

Should just have [Major] and [Minor] in the post title imo

How a 23-year-old first-time Firefox coder fixed a 22-year-old bug (arstechnica.com)

Back in June 2002, Ubuntu founder Mark Shuttleworth was experiencing space for the first time, the Department of Justice’s antitrust case against Microsoft was reaching its final arguments, and Adam Price, using what was then called Mozilla on a Mac, had an issue with persistent tooltips....

alex,

singular they/them users are usually non-binary, ie. neither men nor women, and they’ve been around for a while and are getting more visibility now thanks to a more accepting society.

while it can be hard to read the first few times you encounter them, you’ll get used to it, don’t worry! :)

alex,

Ahhh I’m so glad. I hope you’re feeling better and that it’s nothing too awful 💙

alex,

We need media dedicated to positive trans news. Happiness! Uplifting each other! Allowing ourselves to forget for one minute that there is bad stuff out there!

alex,

It puts a target on our backs if there is an obligation or peer pressure to come out on that day, which I don’t think is the case.

alex,

Fellow French - wait until you realize their unions only apply to one company and not a whole industry so they can’t actually do anything on a large scale. This broke me.

alex,

I feel like OSMAnd is easier to use than the super advanced Vespucci. Haven’t gotten many cases where I couldn’t solve my StreetComplete issue in OSMAnd, and idk, Vespucci is just very overwhelming for me.

alex,

“Sarah - you probably knew her as Brett? - is doing well!”

alex,

Their EU compensation is excellent. Nearly as good as FAANG.

alex,

C’était super intéressant, merci pour le partage !

alex,

Well, less than 10 years ago, Fort Lauderdale wanted to be the US capital of trans tourists, so maybe not that long.

What do you think the bare necessities of the current world is? (beehaw.org)

Years back, it was more simple. Food, shelter, and water. But now, as technology, advances and people get stressed out more and more from life getting too complicated, needing manuals for almost everything. What do you guys think the bear necessities are now?...

alex,

In an European context:

  • Food, shelter and water.
  • Identity papers.
  • Access to the Internet for essential administrative proceedings, since it’s all getting digitalized really fast. If possible a smartphone with wifi access and access to a way of charging it, if not and in an urban area, public library access.

You may survive without it but it’s nice to have a (digitized) proof that you’re allowed to be wherever your shelter is, and to be able to renew your ID.

alex,

I have nothing to bring to your question but wanted to say hello, fellow “learning Inkscape for Wikipedia” person!

alex,

OP specifically asked about EU, where we generally have unemployment benefits and at least a bit of job stability :)

What's your favorite tool to track your reading habits? (kbin.social)

It used to be a todo list set up where I just check off and add whatever books caught my interest but it wasn't very shareable so I moved onto storygraph which I liked more than goodreads as the data visualization and breakdown of books via tags and moods gives me a better idea of where I tend to lean in books I seek out and...

/kbin logotype
alex,

I’m also a Storygraph person for tracking my reading! My to-read list is a text file though.
