AstridWipenaugh,

From Oxford, the traditional dictionary:

gen·o·cide

noun

the deliberate killing of a large number of people from a particular nation or ethnic group with the aim of destroying that nation or group.

What part of that is Israel not doing?

Or we can go with the legal definition from the 1948 Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide linked from www.un.org/en/genocideprevention/genocide.shtml.

Article II

In the present Convention, genocide means any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, as such:

  • (a) Killing members of the group;
  • (b) Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group;
  • © Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part;
  • (d) Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group;
  • (e) Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group.

The only one in question is the last point, but any single one of those points means it’s a genocide.

AstridWipenaugh,

2025 is console only. I wouldn’t expect the PC port for an additional year or two.

AstridWipenaugh,

Getting baptized. Before then, I felt no spiritual connection or “heard the voice of god” or anything. I understood that once I was baptized, I’d be one of god’s children and I assumed the holy stuff would kick in after that point. Funny thing though, nothing changed. No matter how hard I prayed or tried to believe, nothing was different.

I spent several years trying to find literally anything to show that any of it was real. But everything lead to the same dumbfounding dead end: you just have to have faith.

As I learned more about Christianity from a scholarly perspective, it became increasingly clear that it’s not real. The oldest book in the new testament wasn’t written until at least a hundred years after the events took place, meaning it was all disparate verbal stories for hundreds of years. The Council of Nicea later just decided to remove parts and add some new parts to the bible, justifying it by the council itself being divinely inspired to have arrived at the correct version of the bible.

It’s clear now that the rich and powerful have historically used religion as a tool to control and manipulate the masses. With the benefit of hindsight, it’s just an obvious scam that has no basis in reality. So for that reason, I’m out.

AstridWipenaugh,

Don’t sell them short; incel lifestyle is about so much more than (no) sex. I’d challenge you to find any incel posts that exhibit empathy or even a reasonable understanding of human interaction.

AstridWipenaugh,

saying they identified irregular polygonal wedges located at a depth of about 35 meters all along the robot’s journey.

So like a spaceship graveyard from the Great Star War of 4990 BC?

AstridWipenaugh,

Oh step brother! I’m so glad you’re home! I got stuck in the coffee maker… can you help me?

AstridWipenaugh,

I wouldn’t call them bad artists for being outpaced by AI. No human can produce content by hand as fast as a computer. AI is just another tool in an extremely long list of tools that have changed how art is made.

If you go back far enough, I bet cavemen had arguments when someone invented the first brush and could paint all day long without bloodying their fingers scraping them against cave walls. Half joking there, but new and better tools are always being developed. Cameras are a great example of a new tool for art that made art a lot more accessible and affordable and we now accept as a normal artistic tool and not a threat. This attitude against AI will also pass over time.

AstridWipenaugh,

You’re mad at the wrong thing. AI, when used ethically and responsibly, can increase a human’s output in many tasks. This is a good thing and is how we advance as a society. AI does not hurt people. We’re not talking about Skynet.

What does hurt people is when unethical companies exploit their workforce by capturing their increased output without also compensating them for producing that additional output. That’s theft, and it has always happened whenever new tools are invented. But that theft isn’t perpetrated by the tool; it’s the employer that’s at fault. This is why unions are so important.

AstridWipenaugh,

People kill people… with guns. So we regulate people’s use of guns instead of putting guns in jail.

Like I said. Unions are important. So is labor regulation.

AstridWipenaugh,

It made you feel something. Now sit there quietly and think about why that is. What are you getting frustrated with? Why is it bothering you? Unfounded rage is trying to tell you something about yourself. There’s a reason, but you have to be able to be honest with yourself to figure out what it is. Once you can begin to understand it, you can begin to find ways to manage it.

AstridWipenaugh,

It costs like $30 to rent a box truck from home depot to take a big load home. I can get a few sheets of plywood on my Outback with a couple ratchet straps and not going over 40 lol.

AstridWipenaugh,

The other big question is who’s paying for the infrastructure? If payments are done through a third party like Patreon, the host can’t take a cut. Serving lemmy text and image content from a home server is one thing. Being a 4k streaming host is an entirely different business. Way more computing load and bandwidth, which means higher hosting costs.

AstridWipenaugh,

I got physically attacked on the playground pretty much every day for years in elementary school. I feared my parents more than the attackers, so I took my lumps and never fought back. The teachers didn’t care. One day I had enough. Grabbed the kid punching me, threw him to the ground, and kicked him a couple dozen times. He had bruises on his arms, legs, and torso and probably a few bruised ribs. The principal told me that fighting is never ok, but she didn’t see it so couldn’t say if there was a fight or not and warned me against getting into any fights in the future because she’d probably see those… First time any staff stood up for me. No problem though, every one of those kids left me alone and never bothered me again.

AstridWipenaugh,

That’s the normal price difference though? In the US a 1TB PS5 is $499. A 1TB Steam Deck is $649.

AstridWipenaugh, (edited )

If jpg and png were good enough for dialup, they’re good enough for gigabit.

AstridWipenaugh,

I remember. Finished halfway through kathy_ireland_nude_boobs.jpeg

AstridWipenaugh,

You can even write your own OS from the ground up. Everything is possible with enough time and reverse engineering. But is it a good idea? Usually not.

AstridWipenaugh,

I’m an Envy Code R fan myself.

AstridWipenaugh,

Who in tarnation is cooking an eggplant peach dish that’s splashing? I saw my daughter’s text messages and her boyfriend didn’t even bring any of this strange dish to share when he came over. Kids these days…

AstridWipenaugh,

No sir. This thread is about emoji, not GILFs.

AstridWipenaugh,

A muppet movie about GILFs instead of Gelflings would be significantly different 😂

AstridWipenaugh,

I use an esim with a Pixel and Google Fi. The setup process is this:

  1. Sign in to Google account
  2. Complete normal phone setup
  3. Confirm notification prompt to use this device with my fi account
  4. Never make phone calls ew gross
AstridWipenaugh,

Yep! I have a normal phone number and get unlimited voice and sms, and 5g data metered data at $10/GB. They have an unlimited plan too, but metered works best for me. It’s actually serviced by ATT and Verizon IIRC, so you connect to whichever is best.

AstridWipenaugh,

Nope, no recording allowed. Best we have is this masterpiece from the courtroom sketch artist (this is real).

AstridWipenaugh,

Biden can also veto any bill for any reason. “No funding for Israel until there’s a ceasefire”

I would like some advice on where to go after university

I am currently a Computer Science student in university who really loves Linux and FOSS software, hates it when governments and corporations spy on people, and would probably rather have a job that brings meaning and benefits society than one that has a high paycheck (although I do recognize that I also need to have enough money...

AstridWipenaugh,

My cousin got a job working on FOSS for 5 years out of college. His secret? Work 40+ hours a week literally for free, crash on people’s couches, and get his girlfriend to feed him. He eventually got a real job because that’s obviously totally unsustainable.

Unless you have a sugar daddy/momma or a trust fund, you need an actual job. Some companies make good use of FOSS and give back to the community. But I’d suggest settling for any job to get an income and experience while you figure out what companies you actually want to work for.

AstridWipenaugh, (edited )

What has Biden done to stop Israel? Yes, he’s said he wants a ceasefire, but the US vetoing the UN resolution for a ceasefire, sending warships to the area to prevent anyone else from attacking Israel, sending Israel military aid, and continuing to insist Israel “has a right to defend itself” when the death toll is close to 10:1 Palestinians to Israelis all go in the “hell yes” column. I’m genuinely curious what actions you believe go in the “no” column. What has the US done to stop Israel?

Edit: downvoted with no reply. Thanks. That’s exactly the answer I expected.

AstridWipenaugh,

I think the issue is that the question doesn’t appear to have been asked earnestly. Preemptively answering your own question with “sounds like activism” communicates you have already formed an opinion. If you’re asking out of genuine interest, check your preconceived notions at the door and only ask the question. Just “what is this 1819 site? Are they known to be a reputable source and do they demonstrate bias?” Is a good way to ask it.

AstridWipenaugh,

The average life expectancy was low, because so so many people died very young. If you made it through your 20s, you’d be pretty likely to live to what we still consider “old age”.

For people living traditional lives, without modern medicine or markets, the most common age of death is about 70.

I thought “whitelist” got cancelled for being racist? I distinctly remember being forced to rename everything to “IP Allowlist” and having to rename all my branches to “main” from “master”. Jenkins is 3rd party software, so it still has slaves… 😂

AstridWipenaugh,

Yes?

AstridWipenaugh,

Hamas doesn’t need to do anything. All they have to do is say nobody’s getting out, which means the IDF can assume anyone running towards the exit is a terrorist making an attack. I think any foreign nationals that would ever travel to Gaza know better than to approach Israeli forces for help.

If there’s anyone that doesn’t want the outside world to know what’s up, ask the folks who recently cut off internet access to Gaza. Who was it? It wasn’t Hamas.

AstridWipenaugh,

Definitely not. They just did it for the lulz. No other reason whatsoever.

AstridWipenaugh,

Yes, prior reporting covered that she had a heart condition and she was extremely aware that too much caffeine would kill her. The lemonade was clearly labeled with its caffeine content. It didn’t say it was extreme, but it was clearly labeled with how much is in it. The story that “she didn’t know” doesn’t add up unless she was just being wildly negligent.

Article with image of the labeling: www.forbes.com/sites/ariannajohnson/2023/…/amp/

As someone with a food allergy, I check everything I eat for my allergens. If I’m not sure what’s in it, I don’t eat it. And all that will happen to me is I’ll feel ill for a while. Anyone with a lethal condition damn well knows better.

AstridWipenaugh,

Their labeling clearly stated the amount of caffeine per 20 and 30 oz cups. Image: www.forbes.com/sites/ariannajohnson/2023/…/amp/

AstridWipenaugh,

Just walk away. Block him any place he contacts you and don’t give him another thought. Why does he get to live rent free in your head? Evict him.

AstridWipenaugh,

Eat a variety of foods and eat what makes your body feel good. Eat an amount that maintains your healthy weight. But the most important part is finding the motivation to control your intake.

AstridWipenaugh,

💯 I’m closing in on 40m and I’d be in a world of pain if I hadn’t started listening to my body. I had a “bad back” and got sucked into going to a chiropractor for years. One day I realized they weren’t going to fix anything and it was up to me to figure out why I hurt and make it better. I’m largely pain free now, because I started taking the time to listen instead of “just power through it”.

I also lost 70lbs and have maintained a healthy weight for a decade without a “diet”, aside from what I said in my original post. Shit food made me feel like shit, but I didn’t want to listen…

AstridWipenaugh,

That last part happened to my cousin. He dated a guy for a few years and everyone liked him a lot. After they got married, he let all the crazy out and became mentally and physically abusive. It apparently started pretty much immediately after marriage, but it took several years before anyone found out what was happening.

AstridWipenaugh,

Your sarcasm is brutal! That’s sarcasm, right? RIGHT?!

Is it okay to support Israel?

Hello I just created this Account for this Question. Is it okay to support Israel in the middle east conflict? I’m from Europe and have no ties at all to any Side. Its just that I lean more to the Side of Israel then any other. Is this okay? Is it up to debate which Side is to support or is one of them clearly in the Wrong?...

AstridWipenaugh,

Israel responded by blowing up mosques and apartment buildings. They cut off power to everything, including hospitals. They’re blockading to prevent any supplies from entering Gaza. Both sides are committing war crimes and intentionally targeting civilians. Nobody is right here. Supporting either side is encouraging a religious war.

AstridWipenaugh,

I have used the top of the line MacBook Pro (work provided) for ~8 years. They’re great laptops. They can handle any programming compilation workload I can throw at it, even on top of all of IT’s required malware. The OS is stable and stays out of my way for the most part. I don’t use any Apple software and generally dislike when I have to do anything Apple-specific, but the hardware and runtime environment are undeniably solid.

That said, I’ll probably never own a Mac because they’re unreasonably expensive. I can get a high end gaming laptop or build a ludicrous desktop for the same price and run either linux or windows.

AstridWipenaugh,

You can’t just casually use “shot up” when talking about kids in school…

AstridWipenaugh,

He killed a fuckton of vampires tho
