AA5B,

Yeah, I also wasn’t aware. I imagine there were signs, but who looks for the caffeine content of lemonade? In my case I just had a dash t flavor soda, so I didn’t notice until my kid pointed it out

Similarly, when my kids were little, I kept them away from stimulants, but who expects to have to prohibit lemonade for the caffeine hit?

AA5B,

The other thing is, these drinks are in the same dispensers, the same location, that used to have regular juices. Even assuming the signs were there, it’s set up for no one to pay attention

AA5B,

Some soda has various chemicals to trick your body into responding to sweetness, but no actual sugars

AA5B,

I also made the mistake. Personally I don’t care, especially since I was looking for a flavor shot with soda, but these are in the same dispensers that used to hold juice, in the same spot, and there probably still are some regular juices there. I suppose we should read every sign, but it’s not in human nature. Who would think to check the caffeine content of what appears to be juice?

I imagine that signs are posted, but it’s set up to be misleading. Panera missed the opportunity for splashy marketing (at least where I was) which could have both sold more and communicated better

AA5B,

I’m not entirely sure what meaning is intended but most of the characters in the top far predate Cartoon Network

For example: Flintstones: 1960; Cartoon Network 1992. We’re closer to the founding of Cartoon Network than Flintstones was

AA5B,

Wtf is this linked to? A good dozen tries and I can’t pass the captcha? Am I just a sentient robot who is unaware or this a mechanical Turk thing where I’m helping some bot pass l

AA5B,

Not intentionally, but I’m on iOS which ma becrelevant

AA5B,

F.U.D. Fear, Uncertainty, Doubt. A favorite tactic of IBM, then Microsoft, now Toyota. If you can’t compete, announce an upcoming “breakthrough” so customers will delay purchases from competitors

AA5B,

Yeah, my credit card was charged for pre-order almost a month ago - no updates

My local store is expecting initial stock in two weeks and are NOT doing any sort of pre-sales

AA5B,

Personally I think notification is the potential life changer most people don’t realize. Imagine an easy way to tell when the laundry is done without that godawful buzzer. Did I leave the stove on? Is there water in the basement? Is my fridge out or otherwise not leaping cool? What about my garage door? Is the hose running?

A house that can let you know when something is wrong would be huge. Today, a few techies can make that happen with sufficient time and effort. Matter can make that straightforward for everyone. My Mom could never understand Home Assistant or all the components, but she can act when the house tells her she left the oven on

AA5B,

Hopefully this will influence better support for segmented networks in home routers. Yeah, Samsung probably wants to collect any data it can, but Netgear can sell a lot of routers by making it easy for you to feel safer

AA5B,

No , but I understand invading Mexico is on tap

AI content generation is on fast track to kill the whole porn industry.

If you think about it, there are already tools that can do pretty convincing face swaps with few clicks and just from one low res photo at whatever angle. Long are gone the times you had to train the models for hours and had to have few hundred photos to just get “okay” fake. Once deepfake video creation becomes this simple,...

AA5B,

The first use of ai in porn will be to further exploit their customers. Gentlemen, when you’re texting your favorite model, it’s no longer some guy in a third world sweatshop, but an AI you’re having your “genuine” conversation with …. This probably already started.

Second use will be the stories/articles, and also may have started already. Will it replace all the authors and their kinky imaginations? Most stories are pretty formulaic anyway so that could be a low bar, but losing the true authors would be a shame.

Then, yes, there’s the video. I imagine it’s like a video game: you ask Amber to do whatever for you and the computer generates that …. Probably with a selection of celebrity look-alikes. It could even save the internet by generating entirely in your laptop so the only traffic is the data collection upload and malware download. Don’t forget to wear your personal protection, and you may want to hesitate before you turn on your cam to “get in the video “

AA5B,

Sometimes they’re in fashion, sometimes out, their popularity goes up and down

AA5B,

No, I didn’t get this from that comment at all. As a bicyclist attempting to courteously share the road with others …

– I will usually try to leave room for faster traffic to pass

– I will take the whole lane, preventing passing, if necessary for my safety

— I will also pull off when safe, if I find I am being an obstruction to faster traffic

That’s all true, whether I’m cycling, driving a tractor, or there’s something wrong with my car so I’m trying to limp along to a mechanic

AA5B,

It is exciting but what’s the market? It’s hard to see this being at all a reasonable cost having to bring it back to Earth, especially unrefined, and it’s hard to imagine it not being worse than current mining, given the flight back to Earth, especially if refining is still on Earth

On the other hand I’m more excited over mining regolith and water. Such simple things, but will be a huge difference in cost to maintain any off-world presence. Shelter, radiation control, rocket fuel, drinking and bathing, growing food : water and dirt are pretty basic, but just think of the sheer tonnage of supply missions launching from Earth it could replace

AA5B,

How. Ruined biosphere from mining affects many discrete places that can be cleaned up, in theory. Messing up the atmosphere affects all biospheres, is much more vast, and we have to breathe in the meantime

Look at current mining - true crimes against the environment in specific places but do not directly impact most humans. Could you say that about messing up the atmosphere?

AA5B, (edited )

Yeah, I’d vote for a space treaty saying that if you bring a chunk of rock toward earth that is too big to burn up in the atmosphere, it’s a potential act of war that can be dealt with ASAP

“ I’m from Buenos Aires, and I say kill 'em all!”

AA5B,

Huh, I thought it was because that’s where the head is.

AA5B,

I think you passed over two people having sex, and went right to a three way

AA5B,

Yeah, I suppose you’re right, but it would have been so satisfying to play back their own insecurities.

As a non-gay man, I got a huge kick out of all the gay guys taking back “proud boys” a few years back

AA5B, (edited )

In the interest of turning it around to the plus side … I had to do this pre-fmla and got bupkis. I totally agree with your assertion, except fmla was one tiny step in the right direction many years ago. It’s not that fmla is horrible but that it was only the first step and we need to take the next step, and we need to walk faster

AA5B,

I wonder if this is a college thing. Most of us who have gone to college probably experienced a 15 minute walkable “city “ and are more likely to appreciate it

AA5B,

Raspberry Pi is finally becoming available again, and they plan to ship a new model this month, for the first time in like four years

AA5B, (edited )

Or tomatoes. Our pediatrician said for older houses you need to expect soil near the houses to be contaminated by lead paint so vegetable gardens (unless separated soil) are not a good idea, especially tomatoes

Edit: apparently lettuce too

Modern technology recently resulted in incredibly fast development of multiple vaccines to control a worldwide pandemic. Even just a few years earlier vaccines would have taken years and resulted in many more deaths

If there can be a silver lining in the heavy dark clouds of war, it’s that many countries are speeding up deployment of renewable energy to reduce their dependency on unstable or unfriendly nations

AA5B,

It all depends on where the tipping points are, and there’s still a lot of uncertainty. If we can stop making things worse before we hit major irreversible changes to our environment, we can eke it out

AA5B,

Even for the climate, we’re finally taking action and the action is speeding up every year.

We may be too little too late, but we’re moving and we’re speeding up

AA5B,

Thanks a lot: you made me look it up. The Wikipedia article has more potential climate tipping than I was aware of, and near the beginning they talk about fears of a tipping point cascade. I think that’s the end of my internet tonight

AA5B,

Great idea! We can be more efficient by running full buses in both directions

AA5B,

You really ought to step back and compare the amount of lithium needed to be mined vs the current fossil fuel production. There a vast difference. Then adjust it for the Lithium being infinitely reusable, vs fossil fuels not at all.

AA5B,

BS. You’re assuming current (or is that past) levels of renewable energy and no recycling. Sure mining and processing done rare earths is polluting and energy intensive, but it gets cleaner every year based simply on increased renewable energy. Also, most of these metals are infinitely reusable, and just aren’t yet because it’s not worth it until they’re widely used

AA5B,

I just replaced my iPhone, and the few places I “sign in with Apple” still work in the new phone. Yes, you can back it up and restore to a different device. I assume you can also use it across devices but I haven’t tried that

AA5B,

My understanding of Apple Keychain is that every credential is useable from every device, and can be backed up and restored to a new device. Most importantly Apple doesn’t have access, although we have to trust them on that

AA5B,

US legal system can compel you to give biometrics, but not password/pin

AA5B,

My 6 character alphanumeric pin is more secure than your four digit numeric

AA5B,

Didn’t that process of backing off continue until 2007, when the terrorist group Hamas took over and restarted the terror campaigns?

AA5B, (edited )

Didn’t always work. My previous employer had them on a timer. If they thought you were taking too long, it would start flushing, then again, then more frequently. So yeah, time to stand up for a couple minutes before resuming pooping.

Actually, yet another reason for using the handicapped stall. Sorry guys, but there’s room to standup and even turn around, there’s a hook to keep anything off the floor, and it doesn’t have the timer. At some point the regular stalls became unusable

Samsung joins Google in RCS shaming Apple (www.theverge.com)

Samsung has released a new video in support of Google’s #GetTheMessage campaign which calls for Apple to adopt RCS or “Rich Communication Services,” the cross-platform protocol pitched as a successor to SMS that adopts many of the features found in modern messaging apps… like Apple’s own iMessage.

AA5B,

Apple should support RCS as a cross-platform texting option. It is meant to be implemented by cellular providers, not device manufacturers, and meant to be a more capable replacement for existing texting. It is not under the control of any single software or cloud provider. Think of it as improving “the lowest common denominator”. I don’t see why I would choose to use it but I do want the option.

AA5B,

Never used PHP, but wasn’t there a bunch of issues around the admin page being accessible?

AA5B,

Yep, that’s what I was thinking of

Seeking to understand speaker phone use in public

I’m traveling with family this weekend in a touristy place and have been out in public in crowded areas. I am really shocked by the number of people who have loud, personal conversations on the phone in speaker mode. This ranges from walking down the sidewalk, to in line for washrooms, to seated restaurant dining....

AA5B, (edited )

I was about to ask if you considered texting for those occurrences…… until your Mother entered the picture, and seniors, maybe migrants

Children’s picture book flagged at Alabama library because author’s last name is ‘Gay’ (www.al.com)

Madison County Public Library administrators were asked to go over a list of potentially "sexually explicit" books to be moved from the children's and young adult section to the adult section. The majority of these books were about the LGBTQ community. At least one was added to the list because the author's last name is Gay.

AA5B, (edited )

As a parent, I can confidently state that not all of us are bigots , not all of us want our kids to be bigots, and not all of us preach hatred for anyone different

AA5B, (edited )

Maybe there’s useful sex Ed these days, but all I remember are very dry boring biology videos about embarrassing subjects. I bet most of these lgbt kids also have reproductive organs and get embarrassed talking about them.
