AA5B,

Hell no. People here keep posting simplistic solutions but this area has a long bloody complex history. Many previous attempts have demonstrated there is no such solution. Trying to settle the area just means finding a new way to fucj it up more. Just no.

AA5B,

I think a lot of this is driven by technology change, and the article misses that. Unions see the turning points and some of the future

— while the article mentions “training ai” for the writers strike, the much bigger change is streaming media and how that affects compensation

— transition to EVs might require fewer employees, certainly different jobs, but companies were setting them up to limit the reach of unions. Unionizing battery plants is huge

I have been trying to do bonds with USB adapters

– If you’re doing it for performance, you should compare a low end 2.5gE switch and cards to all that complexity. Higher performance, simpler, more reliable

– if it’s to learn about bonding, consider how many you need and whether doing the same thing multiple times is a benefit

– if it’s for redundancy/reliability, I don’t think this is going to work. My plan is to build a cluster of single board computers and do everything in containers. Keep the apps portable and the hardware replaceable

– attacks might not be new, but the scope is

– Israel Intelligence is usually pretty good, but preparations must have been going on for months, involving thousands of people. How did they not figure something out.

– there is a wall, military forces. This is heavily guarded, but that was completely ineffective

– Israel has very good missile defense. Never before have they had the volume to overwhelm that defense

– things had seemed peaceful lately, and Israel was trying to gain closer ties with some countries in the region

AA5B,

The impact on indigenous people was certainly significant, so that makes sense. However there was also significant impact on European history which would be missing. The advantage of calling it Columbus Day is he was central to all the lasting effects

AA5B,

Banking, school, government holiday but I rarely get it off (I do this year). I rarely go to a bank, so not likely to affect me (does anyone else remember when banks would close web sites for holidays?)

I got my kid home from school, which is nice, but his coach just called for an extra practice so we can’t do anything

AA5B, (edited )

Norse may have been there, but there was no lasting impact. No permanent settlement, no trade, no records other than logs/journals, no memory, no further exploration …. Compare that with the impact of Columbus’ voyage

We actually don’t know how much the Norse may have explored: we have very few records and I believe only one settlement for a couple years.

I find this idea fascinating - they could have ….

Looks like a planning map for high speed rail to me

Badly [re-]titled ArsTechnica article warns of large multi-vector malware incursions in IoT and personal devices suspected to be Chinese in origin (arstechnica.com)

“In total the researchers confirmed eight devices with backdoors installed—seven TV boxes, the T95, T95Z, T95MAX, X88, Q9, X12PLUS, and MXQ Pro 5G, and a tablet J5-W. (Some of these have also been identified by other security researchers looking into the issue in recent months).”...

AA5B,

Thank you. No hatred toward anyone involved, but the first question is whether I’m affected and this provides a clear answer

AA5B,

I use generated email/usernames everywhere I’m forced to login, in the hope they can’t connect all the dots. Don’t know if it works though.

AA5B,

We need to do it again in about ten years, to speed up the transition to EVs. In the US, CARB states are committing to no sales of new gasoline cars after 2035. That’s a great start, but then we need to work on cutting the huge backlog of polluting cars: time for a new “cash for clunkers” to get them off the road

AA5B,

As long as you limit weaving side to side. I generally wouldn’t mind pedestrians except they’re so damn unpredictable

AA5B, (edited )

Or sometimes it’s as simple as people resenting being forced to join a union for certain jobs, especially when they don’t feel represented. I guess my point is that the propaganda against unions doesn’t even have to be made up. There are downsides some of the time and if that’s all we hear about, that’s our impression of unions.

A successful negotiation never makes the news. A job with good benefits might not have an obvious connection to the union that made that happen

AA5B,

Having kids really helps, but it’s a long term commitment and they grow up. I loved playing with my kids when they were little. It was definitely part of what made parenting so rewarding

AA5B,

Amazon is losing money on basic voice assistant, but maybe if they make it more expensive , it will become profitable ?

AA5B,

The one thing Siri has above all else is being local where possible. Personally I thought one of the biggest announcements from last month’s Apple event was that the new watch is powerful enough to do voice processing locally.

Of course that also may be one of the reasons Siri lags the cloud voice assistants

AA5B,

Think of it more like a safety standard - prevent the sales of variations doing the most harm to public health

AA5B,

Because it’s doing the most harm to the most harmed demographic?

AA5B,

FM is good in theory, but I stopped listening over a decade ago due to the sheer overwhelming advertising. Sometimes it felt like I’d go half an hour or more without any music to listen to. It’s just not worth it

AA5B,

Who the fuck uses a gun to get someone’s attention?

AA5B,

Back to the lack of trigger discipline

AA5B,

No, it would be useless to ban blankets, everyone would be cold 🤓

But restrictions on carrying would make a lot more sense. They should not be carrying a weapon in a crowded area

AA5B,

The problem is that caging stupidity doesn’t prevent harm. What about the toddler who got shot? It would be far better to try to prevent the situation from happening in the first place

AA5B,

That was a horrible gimmick, mostly useful for annoying people. But I believe iPhones have it, or at least Apple Watch does

AA5B,

Is this that new Russian air defense system, where they stop incoming missiles with a factory?

AA5B,

Or, how about avoiding those life and death situations? I’ll “stand my ground” that most bear attacks are caused by people. Don’t do that. Don’t be stupid and rely on blasting away to save your life. Bear bells, secure food storage away from people, not getting too close with your photo attempt, are much more effective

AA5B,

This is why I think Toyota is full of shit. Toyota is not a battery company, nor does it yet produce Electric Vehicles, yet we’re supposed to believe in just four years they’ll be ready to mass produce the holy grail of batteries in sufficient quantity, quality and price for cars, when an actual battery company is not promising them for another two years, and where safety is not a concern?

Toyota has nothing to sell, is way behind everyone else, and has to resort to FUD to try to discourage people from buying other brands

AA5B,

… and CARB states in the US

AA5B,

Yeah, a kid was just kicked off my sons siccer team for vaping in school - someone failed somewhere that he was able to develop a habit

AA5B,

Same thing: tax the hell out of both. Vice taxes are too low. It may not help current users but it should help over time by discouraging new users.

I do drink alcohol sometimes, so yes I’m advocating more pain on myself. It won’t effect me since as an occasional drinker, it just won’t add up, but lets try anyway. I have kids who will need to make such decisions

AA5B,

Ok. Sure, junk food is horrible for people’s health, not least because it can seem like the cheapest way to eat. If it no longer being cheap encourages people to make healthier choices, I’m all for it. As someone who would pay more in multiple of these categories, I’m still all for it

AA5B,

I’m sure he looked cool getting caught alone in the school bathroom vamping, and being kicked off the team. Which do you think is the coolest, being ostracized or kicked off the team? Maybe walking home by himself because his former buddies on the team think he’s a dumbass?

AA5B,

Well, the soccer kids. I imagine he had others, but who knows if he succeeded in switching cliques

AA5B,

They do have a point though. When we’ve gone through phases where the industry focuses on commenting code and other documentation, most of it is useless.

Code comments should have a reason, and are no substitute for readable code.

However you’re also right though that people jump onto “all or nothing”. I recently did a code Review that I held up for comments. In this case, they were doing something very atypical to get around a limitation so it was a clear case of comments needed. The next person through will say “what is this shit?” And “fix” it, without knowing there was a good reason

AA5B,

I have to say I agree. I like most of her proposals and I’d probably vote for her but she’d bring out the crazies for Drump. We really need a centrist like Biden until the crazies crawl back into their holes

AA5B,

I never understood the hatred for Hilary Clinton either. She may not have had the charisma we seem to elect these days but had a very effective organization. I believe she would have been quite effective

Was it for ACA? Was it being the first woman with a chance at President? The email thing and the Benghazi thing were mostly slander from the other party and would happen to any candidate.

Do you really think AOC could survive being tarred and feathered in this political environment, regardless of whether she deserved it?

Maybe next time around, when Caesar Trump is no longer a possibility and Rhonda Sanity has fallen apart

AA5B,

Biden is … so boring

As a politician should be. I really wish we could get past the manufactured outrage, pandering, bombast, and blatant lying that politics is, and look for competence. Nice, boring competence. Someone who gets stuff done rather than yelling about doing stuff. I want Jimmy Carter back

AA5B,

His Wikipedia page seems to tick all the right boxes, and being related to “Dear Abby” is not a bad thing, but I don’t know anything else about the guy.

For those complaining that he’s wealthy: yeah but it does seem to take that to get elected

AA5B,

Certainly car loans can be predatory, and it is worth improving oversight, limiting what loan providers are allowed to offer. While I’ve seen plenty of people in trouble with car loans, it was always predictable/likely and my first thought had been how could a loan provider have approved that. I’m sorry if people are desperate for transportation and short of options but it’s not helpful to offer rates like credit cards, nor roll over previous loans, nor offer loans at high percentages of people’s incomes

AA5B,

1TB is a lot of storage and I think very few people use that much. Do you have a specific reason to need that much? The biggest difference between the two is likely the storage, so make sure it’s the one that you need. While iPhones have a justified reputation for insufficient storage, the minimum/default is the problem. If the smaller storage meets your needs, I’d go for the newer one on the idea it may be supported longer

I got 256GB, which gave me sufficient space to download every free game that seemed remotely interesting and I’ve never come close to running out. However I’ve never even tried most so really ought to clean up

Other big usages of storage tend to be:

— photos/videos. I don’t edit videos and my photos are in iCloud with just thumbnails. What are your needs here?

– music. I stream, rather than own, so not much here. Which do you do?

I woke up today while trying to sync my breath to others. Does it happen to you?

I sleep with my wife and (when she graces us with her presence) our cat. Last night I caught myself syncing my breath to their breaths while sleeping, or half-sleeping considering I was aware of what was happening. Eventually their breathing went out of sync, and my breathing got confused, and after a very brief period of...

AA5B,

Doesn’t a cat breathe really fast? I can’t imagine trying to keep up with that. Similarly, I caught myself synching to 1/2 my ex’s breathing, because our rates were naturally too far apart

AA5B,

I see the argument for self-defense but that is not the same as using lethal force. Nor is it the same as opening fire in public.

AA5B,

Then you made the right choice for you.

Apple decided to implement in their OS one wallet for payments, one consistent set of user experience with security and privacy, open to pretty much any payment card. If you want something else, use something else.

AA5B,

I have the freedom to use a different phone at any time. I chose Apple because of a better user experience, better security and privacy

AA5B,

One of the uses of Apple Wallet is to auto-fill web payment forms. You use any credit card you want for a great user experience, and Apple is not charging anyone

AA5B,

And yet not at all like that

AA5B,

Damn, I considered joining Knights of Columbus because it’s a social organization that does some good fundraising and service projects. I didn’t know I’d have to change my politics

AA5B,

I recently read Nikki Haley was climbing in some polls (or was that Ron DeSanity falling)
