Similar to your “door to door with minimal breaks” - as an American, a ten hour drive is the minimum it could take. Yes we should take breaks more seriously

For example, I say it’s a 14 hour drive to my brother’s house. That means I grab breakfast on my way out of town, stop for gas and fast food lunch (perhaps to go), stop for gas and fast food dinner, then get there 14 hours later. If you take more than minimal breaks, it’s up to you to do the math

It’s crazy how big the variables can be as well. Both my ex and I have family in the Baltimore-Washington-Virginia area: for the same trip, she called it a 6.5 hour drive whereas I called it a 9 hour drive. We were both right, with the biggest variable being what traffic through or past NYC would be like depending on what time each of us liked to start driving

Yeah, I have been wondering just how bad their content has gotten, or of I somehow got pigeonholed by their filtering algorithms. Somehow almost everything was rated two stars out of five and just plain bad, or in some random language that I don’t speak.

I’m really pissed off when the same movie keeps appearing in every section with different thumbnail. Yes I’ve been fooled by both the category and the different appearance but I don’t recall ever being tricked into watching something, only annoyed and frustrated

Yes, we do still need to have Monks copying books, but not for the latest Romance Novel. Let the machine do what it does well, and crank out millions of copies of dreck. However the remaining monks might still find good employment going upscale, competing for prestige and quality, rather than quantity or turnaround time.

This author wants to keep turning out quantities of dreck, but now there’s a cheaper way, yet she doesn’t seem interested in trying to upscale to a product where humans are still better than AI (I assume them are what she means by “funnels”)

I’m in the tech field so my point if comparison is outsourcing. We had a couple decades where management decided the most profitable way to do business was outsourcing quantities of dreck to lowest priced providers in third world countries. That even drove racism that hadn’t previously existed. However more recently the companies I work for are more likely to be looking for quality partners or employees in different time zones and price points. Suddenly results are much better now that our primary concern is no longer lowest price. Don’t be a monkey banging on a type writer for an abusive sweatshop in a third world country that can be replaced by someone or something yet cheaper, but upscale to being a respected engineer in a different time zone making a meaningful contribution to the technical base

all you need is low-quality product

Isn’t this the real problem? Maybe my outside perspective is wrong, but it really seems like companies have changed what they want from writing to mass quantities of eye catching dreck, rather than useful, informative, well written articles. I’m not just talking Buzzfeed either but this illness has infected news, marketing, and tech doc as well.

A friend who works for a consulting company has talked about when he is between gigs, he works internally improving their doc generator. This is a high end, expensive consultancy, and part of what you get is mass quantities of generated dreck

Humans can still create better writing in many ways, but how can we fix society to value that?

I never realized how frequently I called things “lame” until I said it in front of a coworker paralyzed from a motorcycle accident. Hopefully he understood, but it just took that one glance telling me he heard it for me to stop. To try to stop.

I always hated the UI, especially attempts to “improve” it, but that was mostly an inconvenience. And I don’t like being pushed toward an app, with increased tracking bullshit, just to view a web site

I don’t know what happened with the AMA person a while back but after she left, that was no longer worth subscribing to. It appears to be a sign of Reddit management killing their future

The reason I liked Reddit was the content, the discussions. However those are highly dependent on the mods and the super users, and Reddit seemed to start hating them, all of them. All of them at once. How are you alienating the very group of people who are volunteers responsible for making your site compelling? Who are responsible for your success?

I don’t hate Reddit but management made a change likely to degrade my reason for being there. I’m here to see if I can encourage development of a new alternative …… but yeah I was actually hoping the boycott would make a difference

Didn’t they straight up say that at one point? And I don’t begrudge that: it makes sense. Potentially the next big wave of hotness is being trained on existing content like Reddit. They are potentially profiting off Reddit. It’s fair that Reddit should get a cut of that.

But there has to be a better way than to go through swinging a hammer side to side and not caring who you bludgeon

Sure, and if you choose the correct place in the grocery store to get your tomatoes, you have all the fixings for a nice pico de gallo or guacamole all in one place. But why don’t they ever have chips there? I know this has to connect somewhere …… yeah

Chrome is popular because of inertia. I was a huge Mozilla fan for years, until it became unusable. Chrome was the only choice and noticeably more performant. Since then, there hasn’t been sufficient reason to redirect that inertia. Yes, that was quite a few years ago. Lots of inertia

I guess I’m luckier than most, with rock solid internet. It’s extremely dependable. Working from home, it’s faster and more reliable than at my employer. When my kids goto their mother’s where they’re stuck with “the worst company in America” as their provider, they complain constantly about how horrible it is, despite it being “the same” as mine

It doesn’t seem enough anymore. I used to be a free speech absolutist: following the soap box analogy, I don’t have to listen to whatever filth you’re spewing, I can point and laugh, I might no longer be interested in being friendly. That’s all logically complete: say what you want but no one has to listen, and you’re not free of the consequences.

However online communities have taken this to a whole new level, and free speech can become actively harmful to others and to society. Now we get to the other common analogy “but you can’t yell FIRE in a crowded theater”. Just like that example, you have no right to a platform that endangers others. Unfortunately the danger is more indirect, so it’s not an exact analogy, and it’s not clear where to draw the line

That’s part of the problem with online speech: you spew your rhetoric out to the world, with no direct consequences. We need to develop an online equivalent to throwing tomatoes.

Actually, I don’t know what to think of gullible people. In the village, there’s only so much danger, plus people can take them aside and tell them not to be dumb. But what of the idiots sitting home on Facebook in an echo chamber of madness, getting angrier and angrier?

Left front pocket. I’ve kept my keys in front right for most of my life and don’t want to scratch my phone. Actually, left cargo pocket when I can. Roomy, usually buttons or velcro so less risk of losing, less likely to be affected by sitting

Also, I don’t understand people who use their back pocket: aren’t you afraid of breaking your phone by sitting on it? Aren’t you afraid of it falling out of the smaller pocket? Aren’t you afraid of more easily getting robbed?

Yes, it may be doable, depending on your use case. Aside from reading/browsing, most of my “phone” activity is through my watch. (I don’t have a cellular connection so my phone has to be nearby but I assume watches that do are functionally equivalent)

However actually talking is a weak spot. I can make and receive calls through my watch but sound is horrible
