Inertia. For years: IE sucked and Mozilla was painfully slow and missing features. I know it’s been quite a few years since that was a thing, but people don’t like to change, so I really think it’s still leftover behavior.
Or at least it is for me, but I’m mostly in the Apple ecosystem now, so it’s not as relevant
I also got a great interest rate, and tried to continue my practice of paying extra every month to end the mortgage early. However interest is so low that it’s just not worth it. Pre-paying makes very little difference, and I can put it to better use elsewhere. It’s crazy that even a simple savings account pays me higher interest right now
This was actually my thought process when I got divorced. It probably would have been prudent in many ways to downsize to a condo, since it’s just me, however I could afford to buy my ex out of the house and any percent gains will be off a much higher base. I’m hoping that when I do eventually downsize, that my equity will be higher than if I had a paid off condo. In your example, doubling prices gained $200k inequity for the condo owner, vs $350k gain for the house owner (of course it’s more complicated when you factor in the mortgage)
… so yeah, it would suck for the housing market to crash, or stay down
No this is exactly where carrying a weapon is bad. The guy had reason to act in self-defense, however potentially lethal force is a harder sell, and boasting away in a crowded place is wrong. If the guy didn’t have the gun, or otherwise defended himself without it, we’d all be cheering and justice would be swift
Definitely not my experience. I live in a “blue” area but …. A friend up north gets worked up about vaccines, and his wife runs a daycare! He’s educated and intelligent but has entirely off-base assumptions. My brother in the Midwest works for a car manufacturer …. still thinks electric vehicles are a fad that don’t work and never will. “Look around you” does not compute because it’s “just Tesla” and everyone knows they have poor uplift and loosing tons of money and only survisipve on government handouts
I remember trying to always understand those “others”, but in recent years reality intervenes. Just like I always thought I had a good reputation for k owledge, knowing the facts, regardless of my politics, yet knowing facts now seems like a liability in certain discussions
But those are just facts and you’re using logic. You’re even implying it’s a good idea when the numbers make sense.
I live in an area that’s not the greatest for solar, but it has state incentives to help encourage adoption. The argument is whether to expect payback after 12 years or after 4. I’m not planning to live in my current house in 12 years
It’s also a bit of a misdirection, because wind and solar at industrial scale are well proven to have a strong payback. There are people who don’t let their beliefs get in the way of a good business case, but there are still a very loud minority who will not believe it
Both my portable chargers clearly label an input port different from a charging port. In my case the input is Lightning and charges through two usb-a …. So you can use the same cable for both, on older iPhones.
Looking online at the charger that article is about, clearly labels usb-c as input only. I suppose the description can hold be in response, but the picture shows it labeled on the device.

I’m not sure when it was written, but I ran across this list of the best science fiction and fantasy books this century, and I resonated with the ones I’ve read, so I thought I’d see what others thought of it. Have you read many of them?
Huh, none. I see seveneves, and I actually have a hold on that to finally see what that author is like. It’s several months out though, apparently very popular
For those of you who use Raspberry Pi’s in your home environment, I’m curious as to what you use them for. What applications are you running on them? Do you have your Pi’s setup in a cluster?

Yes, from what is presented here, it sure sounds like self-defense was warranted but the guy needed to try a less lethal weapon. Put them both in jail, plus seize the Ill-gotten gains of the asshole.
I know it’s easy to be brave on the internet, with plenty of time to think about it: I wanted to quip “that’s what I carry elbows for”. I certainly can’t claim to know whether I would react appropriately, but I don’t have to since I don’t carry a lethal weapon. If you do carry, you need to be able to respond appropriately instead of just blasting away at the first confrontation
Same here, but I have teens. Parents get new phones every 2-4 years, teens get “new-ish” phones with new batteries. Apple supports their phones about 6 years, so we have them the full supported life and get a little money back on trade-in. Hardware is pretty obsolete by then, so I wouldn’t want to keep them longer
New batteries have been reasonably priced and easy to get done. We spend a little more for better cases so the phones usually last, however replacing a screen means replacing the phone
Since a recent release of iMessage, you can scroll back to a specific message and long-press to pop up a context menu. You can choose to “reply to” that specific message and will be in a mode where you only see that direct chain, not all messages. Click to leave that mode and you can see your new message, with a short sunken copy of what you’re directly replying to. It helps give useful context when your message thread is not sequential

Sure, like that KFC rumor in Korea. Apparently KFC can no longer use “Chicken” in the name because they use genetically modified birds with no feathers to make processing easier.
Apparently started by Korean chicken farmers hurt by competition with commercial farming and somehow believed.by certain people
So, kids are gone, ex and I are no longer together (hence ex i guess lol) and I still find I over cook, I try to use less but it seems if I cook much more than a box of macaroni its too much. Sure I save leftovers, but one can only eat so much leftovers....
I’m having the same issue: ex left a couple years ago but I still had a couple teens to feed. Now both kids are away so it’s just me, and I have no idea how to cook
First battle is to continue cooking. Most of my motivation was to feed them either stuff they liked or new foods for them to try, and that motivation is gone.
Portions. I wasn’t thinking and bought a gyro platter at Costco. I guess that’s my dinners for the week. The guy at Costco was trying to sell me on the executive membership based on how much I’ve spent this year: nope, maybe I shouldn’t even keep the membership
Before Family, I had been in a habit of going to a farmers market, then making a big salad, big pasta salad, and big fruit salad for the week. Just add protein and you have a meal. That might be a good idea to return to
Feels like a dumb question, but I haven’t ever worn a pair of boots that didn’t hurt in some way. Is this just a feature of boots, or am I doing something wrong?
Same here - I got a pair of Keen abut 5-6 years ago for hiking and they are the most comfortable boots I ever had - sometimes I wear them instead of sneakers. However they haven’t had as much use in the last few years.
I imagine all boots are slightly different and all feet are slightly different, so it’s a matter of finding that perfect fit for your feet at the time
The only difficulty I’ve had is that my previous case had a silicone cover protecting the Lightning port. Now I spend too much time fiddling with the case trying to remove the non-existing cover to the USB-C port
The Indian media is filled with so much BJP/right wing propaganda right now. Especially on YouTube and Instagram. That stupid modi has brainwashed so many young Indians into his hateful ideology. Its hard to find a rational indian who thinks for themselves on social media....
In the US, a lot of these belief systems are focused on individual states or cities. For example the left coast and NorthEast tend to be more liberal/Progressive while the middle and southern states are more likely be more Conservative. Cities are more likely to be liberal/progressive while rural is more likely to be conservative. My flavor of politics is reinforced because it’s dominant in my state or city.
A great example of a weak left is our current president. According to the Right, he’s a leftist, but he was elected as a moderate/centrist and a big part of his platform was to try to bring us back together , heal some of the divisiveness.
At the risk of showing my bias, the other end of the spectrum is “people”. Just people. Normal people, different people, special people people of varying attributes, ethnicities, and preferences.
You’re probably correct that “extremes” was not the best choice of words, but I meant that as in opposing. We have people on one side and right wing bigots on the opposite, and they are bound to clash
Would it help to rephrase for my I tended meaning?
— Yes it’s a problem but we’re not all like that. Most of us are not.
— Even in one of the most bigoted places, with politicians spewing hatred, even as one of the targeted groups, a lot of it is just bluster and the hatred doesn’t always translate to real life
— Hatred toward x, is mostly “riling up the base” and you don’t always encounter them, but attacks on education use the force of law to apply the bigotry everywhere, impacting the future of our children and our society
I feel like best plan here would be to impose steeper taxes on second-plus properties
I think we have that where I live, although after 20+ years of owning I still don’t really understand property taxes here.
Anyhow, the property tax has a basic definition but I believe you get a reduction in assessed value for primary residence. That effectively taxes second homes more
