ares35, in Ryanair - Physical gift card can be cheaper than virtual
@ares35@kbin.social avatar

you're paying for the 'convenience' of near-instant delivery to fulfill your own time-pressing need.

it's also possible that their transaction fees are slightly higher for fully-digital goods (the emailed code) vs physical (the actual gift card through the mail).

JoBo,

t’s also possible that their transaction fees are slightly higher for fully-digital goods (the emailed code) vs physical (the actual gift card through the mail).

How on earth is that possible? If an email cost more than printing a certificate and paying postage, there would be a lot less email flying around.

I mean, don’t get me wrong. I’d love to get less email. But it is not true.

OfficerBribe,

If I simply buy the ticket from their page that’s also very convenient, they should probably add some fee for that as well.

Moonrise2473, in Ryanair - Physical gift card can be cheaper than virtual

It’s Ryanair, this is nothing.

For every decision they take they always consult the Big Encyclopedia of Dark Patterns and Asshole Design™ to maximize the damage to the user

Probably they noticed that a virtual gift card will get used very soon (example give the money for a trip to someone else) so they are going to charge extra for the “convenience” while the physical because arrives weeks later via snail mail gets forgotten and they can keep the unused credit at expiration.

Susaga,

“Welcome to Ryanair! As a forward thinking company, we have added a hoop for you to jump through for your convenience! Only £5 per jump! …Oh, no, the only way to board the plane is to use the hoop. But for an additional fee, we will extinguish the fire before you jump!”

Susaga, in Ryanair - Physical gift card can be cheaper than virtual

You could have just said “Ryanair” and that’s all the description you need. Ryanair is designed by assholes. They deliberately designed every element of their business to squeeze pennies out of you for services other airlines offer for no cost at all. And they seem in no rush to tell you about these things until the last possible moment, just so they can catch you off guard and add a last minute charge.

Monomate, in Ryanair - Physical gift card can be cheaper than virtual

They should put the gift card through a scanner and send the image. If it’s that easy, charging for it is asshole-ish for sure.

This is usually how FREE TRIALS work, though, and always has been.

Carter,

No it hasn’t. Cancelling pretty much always lets you continue until you were due to be billed.

ScoobyDoo27,

Not on free trials….as was said. It is typical if you actually already paid for a month and then cancel to have your subscription active till the end of the cycle.

Carter,

You’re just wrong. I always cancel my subscription the second I start my free trials so I don’t forget later.

Cheems,
@Cheems@lemmy.world avatar

I haven’t done a ton of free trials, but the maybe 5 I have, this is how I did it.

RobertOwnageJunior,

You could not be more wrong if you tried.

LazaroFilm,
@LazaroFilm@lemmy.world avatar

The idea is to make you keep it for as long as possible until you hit the first pay cycle.

TheMauveAvenger,

Not when you have to put a credit card number on file. In my experience those trials almost always stay active until time has expired.

This whole thread is full of Apple apologists.

dojan,
@dojan@lemmy.world avatar

Agree.

I generally enjoy Apple’s products, I’m very happy with the stuff I have at least. Corporations and companies aren’t friends, and they don’t deserve to be treated as such just because they make a product you enjoy.

This kind of practise is bullshit through and through. Hell I think signing me up for a subscription as part of having a free trial is BS. I should be able to have a free trial for however long that trial period is, and then get to decide whether or not I want a full subscription. Rescinding the trial because I don’t want to subscribe is garbage.

Astroturfed, in we are devolving

I miss when Amazon prime would refund you the remainder of the month when you cancelled… I have no interest in being a prime member and actively avoid buying anything from Amazon. But sometimes I need something I can’t find locally ASAP and giving them a quarter or two to have prime for a day was a solid option.

LufyCZ,

Yeah doing that sounds like a stupid business practice exactly because of what you’ve described

Astroturfed,

Paying $15 a month for “free” shipping which is also included in the price point of the products sounds like a stupid practice too. Lots of people doing it though.

FlyingSquid,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

If you buy enough, that fee is worth it or you will pay a lot more in shipping. Those of us in small towns without a lot of options benefit from Prime. Amazon is an evil company, but it’s them or another big box store owned by another awful corporation for me. At least Amazon is convenient.

Riven,
@Riven@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

I’m in that boat. I buy enough where getting prime is worth it. I also use their prime video and Amazon photo services so I’m definitely getting my money’s worth.

bogdart, in we are devolving
@bogdart@lemmy.world avatar

And also if you stop paying for 3 months, they completely delete your library. I switched to try Spotify, and when I returned, all my collections from iTunes of 10 years ago are gone forever.

Swedneck,
@Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

Great way to make sure people who leave temporarily instead leave forever

yoz, in we are devolving

So many idiots use apple.

Streetdog,

Statistically more idiots aren’t using Apple.

Adalast,

See, this is why you need to normalize your data before comparing. Lol.

thefartographer, in we are devolving

Enshitification

db2,

Not this time, it’s completely expected that if you cancel a free trial that you’re not interested and don’t want it. It is not at all the same as cancelling a subscription that will ride out until the end of the period.

metaStatic,

I don't want to check this one but if you need a card on file to get your free subscription like basically everywhere else then this is an attempt to let you forget about the service and charge you at least once. Amazon prime's free trial might require 50 fucking clicks to cancel but it will at least ride out the month.

Wander,
@Wander@yiffit.net avatar

If you’re automatically charged when the free trial ends then you should absolutely be allowed to cancel a free trial so that you’re not charged and keep using it until the last day it was offered to you.

thefartographer,

Free trial implies I don’t gotta attach payment to it. This is more like paying for your water bill and calling the first month free.

Rai,

Hey, another thread where someone is desperate to use that word!

It’s the “play stupid games, win stupid prizes” of Lemmy

thefartographer,

Hey buddy, I’m desperate to do a lot of things. Lemme show you what I can do with a $50 bill…

It makes me so angry that I can’t cancel my subscription to audible or else I will lose all my credits.

Fuck you audible.

LazaroFilm,
@LazaroFilm@lemmy.world avatar

Look into your local library. Mine is connected to Libby for audiobooks and it has a pretty big selection.

limerod,

But, if you spend your credits on the audiobooks you want, you don’t have to lose any. I did not lose the books in my library after using them and canceling my subscription and they still exist

Cruxifux,

Yeah this conversation made me just go “fuck it” and I impulse used the ten credits I have on a bunch of books so now I don’t have standing credits anymore. It’s better this way lol

Pyroglyph, in we are devolving
@Pyroglyph@lemmy.world avatar

Who would have thought that cancelling something cancels it? Incredible find, mate.

FringeTheory999,

the idea was to sign up for the free trial, then cancel right away so that you don’t forget to cancel at the end of the trial. previously, in most cases, the trial would run it’s course and you could access it for the duration. Since companies rely on people forgetting to cancel (it’s the only reason anyone even has an apple TV subcription), they’re trying to make this simple life hack more difficult.

XTornado, in we are devolving

I think I have only seen that on Apple. Any other examples?

Sargteapot,

I think patreon also does this which is shit imo

Butt,

YouTube TV did it to me

OskarAxolotl,

Disney+ does the same as far as I remember.

zephyreks, in we are devolving

Classic Apple. Gotta pump up that Services revenue, even if by taking advantage of dark patterns everywhere.

TheYear2525, in we are devolving

I cancelled a service I was getting for free, and they stopped providing the service 😭

sirfancy,
