The main issue here might not be the application including its own updater, but the operating system not including a common updater so each application needs to provide one for itself
Regardless of if this is intentionally designed to be misleading, a stack of sliders is the wrong way to show portions of a whole. I wonder what a better way would be for the web? A single slider with multiple knobs? Or like a single stacked bar with draggable boundaries between sections? I bet you could accomplish that with multiple sliders and some CSS to make them look like a single thing

The publishers and charities sliders and connected, so they split up a total between the two. The Humble slider is independent (or connected to a referral in a similar way).
There should be some kind of separation here. I’d go so far as to say there should be a text explanation.
The other issue is that they’re absolutely no indication that spiders can affect each other, when using a screen reader. There’s no feedback for a slider you’re not adjusting.
Now you’ve got me wondering whether a client-side change would work to unlink the sliders and set them all independently. Could just be sending one value (the Humble slider’s position with the other two determined by splitting the remaining percentage) but if all three values are submitted and pass whatever validation takes place on the server, this could be fixable. No argument that it’s a shitty design though.
You could check your browser’s dev tools network tab and inspect the request. There isn’t much “hacking” you can do here though. If you send a low enough total amount, you just won’t get the games. If you send a higher total amount, you’ll get charged for it. This interface comes before the checkout proper.
It would still be interesting to get some insight on how this works though.
All 3 are connected. If you have Humble at minimum and lower one of the other 2, the humble slider increases along with the one you didn't slide. Keeping humble at minimum while fine tuning the other 2 is really fiddly.
I set up a monthly donation to charity:water when IGN first added the sliders, before they lowered the humble minimum. It used to be 50%. So now a charity gets a bit more than I was donating through humble, and I spend roughly the same amount buying games elsewhere. I get a bit fewer games, but I play all the ones I buy. /shrug

5% to charity is still higher than 0% like all other market places. They still have to make profit and support the staff that work there… They themselves aren’t a charity… Come guys…
Also, they have the lowest cut take compared to all other market places. Steam, epic, Microsoft, they beat them all… AND you can get steam keys from them.
If you ever have to buy a game on steam. Buy it from humble to better support the dev. Stop crying that everything isn’t perfect, is still better than the rest. What’s more annoying then shitty captilism is misplaced anger and uneducated consumers.

That's pretty fucking asshole design. You don't get to claim you're doing something "for charity" and then use psychological tricks to convince people to give more money to you. That's not doing something for charity, that's claiming charity as a marketing gimmick.
Exactly, the Humble slider should mean the lowest but instead they get a whole 11 cents more than the Charity option, and 4 cents more than the developers. It’s preposterous. When the sliders are that close, yet there’s a whole 3% difference, it’s Asshole Design. Obviously the best answer is to use some other service that doesn’t even bother giving anything to charity at all. The good can get fucked, Perfect or Nothing.
If you can afford it, cough up the money for a laser printer. I’ve had mine for years and only changed the ink once. So much better than ink jet printers, which are a total scam
I think the earlier ones were great, too. Jokes aside: people have been saying how much better Brother printers are (used to be?). I only heard positive comments about them, but even my HP laser printer is just a reliable workhorse. Or at least it has been in the last 2 years. I’ve been trying to convert people ever since (to laser printers, not HP).
Old HP laser printers (20 years ago) were tanks, unstoppable workhorses. I had a 4000N that was virtually unbreakable. But they’ve been coasting on that rep for a long time while they changed to inferior hardware and predatory subscription practices. Nowadays they are so enshittified I can’t imagine anyone will even be buying HP printers 20 years from now. I went to Brother for my last two printer purchases and they just work. Look through this thread or any other printer thread for “brother” and “just work”. It’s not an accident.
First I read 4000N as four thousand Newtons and it even felt appropriate, considering its supposed weight (Mass? Force?). Yeah, you can read everywhere how shitty HP is with printers nowadays. Tried to fire up an older HP monochrome laser printer that is still working perfectly.
The problem? Windows 11 has no drivers, and it literally cannot be used at all. Not through Wi-Fi (old drivers, too), not through the USB port, or my shared through my router.
I mean, seriously, this stuff should work on a generic print driver until the end of time, but nope.
Hot news, linux is incredibly compatible with printers. CUPS is very well designed. With relatively little technical knowledge you could probably plug a raspberry pi into virtually any old printer and get it running with the Pi as a print server sharing it with the network.
It’s actually been the case for 20 years now. Same with lots of other devices.
Around 2008-ish I saw a Tesco-branded webcam for something like 5€. I was just in need of one, so I looked up if it’s not, by any chance Linux compatible. It was, right out of the box.
Same thing with Sony Ericsson phones of that era. Capable of lots of things, like Ethernet over USB or Mass Storage, but with Windows it all needed a massive and annoying driver package. Linux - plug and go.
we’ve done this with our router at home. Plug the printer into the router’s USB (has to be direct tho, doesn’t like a hub) and then install the drivers on my mac and it works. Even though this printer is an ancient brother.
Crazy to charge extra for what would be considered the default TV resolution in 2023, imo. Not even going to touch on how fake of a comparison that is.
I don’t see why people need printers in this day and age even at work. I’m in finance and the only time I use the printer is to scan paper someone else like a vendor or customer sent me that could have been sent digitally. Oh, there have been a few times I needed to print out some legal stuff but that’s it.
Need to show proof of residency? Bring a copy of a utility bill (which is now paperless so I have to print it.) Make a change on my car or health insurance? Sure, I can wait a week for them to mail me a copy, or I can print a copy right now (because a family member lost theirs or needs to submit a copy for employment purposes.) “For faster service, please fill the documents out and bring them with to your appointment.” Not a requirement, but saves everyone time.
I used my printer weekly when my kids were in school, but now that they’re in their 20s I still find myself needing to print something every month or two. Sure, the 10 minute drive to the library is an option assuming I have the time to make the trip during their hours, and hoping it’s not the opposite direction of where I’m headed. The last printer I bought was a basic Brother color printer that I spent $30 for on sale. It does a solidly adequate job 6 years later.
YMMV with all these examples. There have been multiple times where I have emailed a utility bill or signed lease. My insurance has an online portal to change my car or house insurance (sorry I don’t have health insurance).
I get it though. This basically comes down to companies that suck and still use fax machines.
It's easier to read for understanding off of paper. Easier to mark up text and make notes. Easier to learn off of. The use and flexibility for learners and knowledge workers is still unchallenged.
Dont really see how this is asshole design, from the front its visible where the cream is in the jar?. When buying and lifting it, volume or weight is visible and you can turn it over to check. Nothing was hidden.
If this design really isn’t asshole design, then why are they still doing it like this? It’s pretty obviously supposed to look like it has more content than it does rn; and even if you do realize what’s going on, this makes it way harder to guess the amount of the contents. A number for gram amount is ok, but your brain really guesses by looking at the content, not the number.
Not sure about the floor, but wearing gloves helps limit how much moisturizer evaporates vs gets absorbed into the skin. For really dry skin, using lotion or cream before bed, then wearing gloves while you sleep can be very helpful.
There is no design evil enough that not some braindead joke of a person will step up and fight for their favorite company… I really can understand thanos these days.
