Sure, the first year (or two) of COVID were wretched, but most of those barriers have since cleared — yet I’m still struggling. I’ve noticed the same with a number of people within my family and neighbourhood....
bunch of sad people in here it seems like, to me it’s as simple as needing to actually make things feel christmas-y, you can’t just sit around doing the same exact stuff you always do and expect an atmosphere to magically materialize from nothing.
decorate things to high hell, play christmas music, eat christmas-y food, go to christmas markets, spend time just chilling with people.
i don’t agree that christmas is consumerist, you can just… not make it consumerist? like it’s not rocket science.
i don’t give a rats ass what brand something is unless it’s nestlé, in which case i refuse to even use it if someone else has bought it.
what matters is ingredients, sourcing of the ingredients, and certifications. Sure it’s a decent amount of effort to keep track of that but good god it’s the least we consumers can do…
“british food” has come to mean “british food from ration times”, which is obviously going to result in it being dogshit because people had to stretch a hunk of ham over an entire week.
it means basic addition and subtraction, maybe multiplication and division but really if you need to do calculations on a regular basis you will naturally end up leaning to do it in your head if that saves significant time.
the thing is: the calculator will always get it right.
our brains use all kinds of shortcuts and patterns so it’s not even that rare for mental calculations to end up completely wrong, or you get the right answer but write the wrong thing, which is less likely to happen if you see the digits in front of you and copy them.
the problem is that our education system insists on teaching things people will never have a use for, and is utterly irrelevant to what they want to study.
and even if it is relevant, it’s almost always taught in the worst way possible, just slapping down a book in front of people with 0 context and then they’re expected to take a test on it, which has been repeatedly shown to be actively detrimental to learning.

At Open Source Summit Japan, Linux and Git creator Linus Torvalds talked about Rust in Linux, Linux maintainer fatigue, and AI’s future role in Linux and open-source development.
it’s different to our ability because we actually know what words are, we know they refer to things.
All an LLM sees is tokens, it has absolutely no concept of what langauge actually is or what things mean, it’s literally just “this number seems to occur after these numbers”.
modern shoes in general absolutely suck, i’ve got a pair of wildling boots which are effectively thick wool socks with rubber outsoles and i just can’t go back now, it’s so much more comfortable.
not to mention that the shoes are so flexible that i can roll them up and stuff them in a bag if needed.
that’s by biking is superior, cyclists greet each other with a smile because we’re glad to finally see another person on the road who isn’t liable to murder us with their vehicle
i can’t imagine any nation isn’t significantly consumerist at this point, even people in bumfuck nowhere live pretty modern lives even if they don’t have electricity.
it’s ironic because arguably society “causes” autism, if society wasn’t so fucked then things like autism and ADHD would just be quirks to take into account.
“oh yeah mary doesn’t like speaking to strangers so we tend to hang out together so it’s easier for her”
thing is though, eating well and exercising shouldn’t really be a big deal, and people who make it such are kinda actively killing people…
it basically just boils down to glancing at nutrition labels for things you eat and if you notice it says 5 billion calories per 100g then maybe reconsider eating it, and not driving everywhere.
idk, i went from chugging coca cola and eating fast food almost every day, to only drinking sugar free soda with meals and most food being home cooked, and it honestly wasn’t that big of a change. Same thing goes for getting more exercise, most people can absolutely ditch the car most of the time and instead ride a bike.
I think it largely boils down to knowledge, people have completely wacky views on what is healthy and not, they never learned to cook for themselves, they don’t understand that a diet change has to be sustainable (crash diets don’t work and make you feel terrible), and they haven’t learned how to change habits like what you eat.
The upshot of it being a lack of knowledge is that we can just… inform people about it.
If home ed. and PE classes were improved kids wouldn’t grow up to view exercise as some miserable thing, they’d know how to cook tasty yet easy meals and thus have less reason to turn to junk food, and if we had information campaigns about the fact that electric bicycles exist we could get tons of people out of cars and onto bikes where they get some actual exercise and fresh air.
is this an americabrained comment? here in sweden, and this is not some urbanist paradise, kids can absolutely get to school on their own, whether that be walking biking or taking public transport.
it’s in fact bog standard for kids to take the bus to school in my town, to the point that you really want to avoid their travel times because buses will be jam packed with annoying children.
a funny thing i’ve realized is that a big part of the reason for the calm atmosphere is that cars are slowed down and their incessant noise is absorbed by the snow.
Winter is great because it makes urban areas more less hostile.
this isn’t an inherent winter problem, but something we have to design our environments to encourage.
it’s perfectly normal to go on a winter walk just because it’s enjoyable here, and i highly doubt people would be choosing to walk as much as they are if they didn’t find that to be the most enjoyable option, considering that we have good public transport in the town.
Pro tip: study how people of the past dressed. I’ve settled on tight-fitting wool underclothes, a fluffy mid-layer, and a simple ruana cloak ontop. This seems to keep me comfortable at least between 0°C and like -7°C
lol have you tried not buying designer clothing? i literally just wear a department store wool base layer, a fluffy jacket, and a cloak made by cutting a recangle of some random fabric i bought at a crafts store, and it’s great.
if you can accept looking a bit medieval then it only has to cost like 50 bucks for the whole getup.
Is it just my circle, or has it been a challenge getting into the Christmas/holiday spirit the last couple of years?
