HONOR X8b: Risk-free Dimming & 108MP Camera (www.hihonor.com)

The main highlights of this phone are the display, camera and the large onboard 512GB storage space. The processor used is unfortunately, the snapdragon 680. That won’t be lag free in web browsing and will have hang in heavy tasks. They should’ve used a better snapdragon processor or a dimensity for improved performance.

limerod,

Multi core performance is good. But, the single core performance doesn’t see much improvement. Also, hopefully they do not skimp on the storage speeds like the A54.

limerod,

Thas was totally unacceptable. The competition provides UFS 3.1 for A54’s price. Meanwhile, Samsung provided 2.1/2.2 like phones which cost half as much.

limerod,

I see. I was concerned about the reduced activity levels overall down to single vote posts.

limerod,

Turn off all related functions for photos in the Google photos app and delete any backed up pictures. Finally, disable/uninstall the Google photos app from your phone.

limerod,

Perhaps, but it’s price makes it more accessible compared to the z flip

limerod,

As long as it doesn’t negatively impact thernals and battery life. It’s acceptable.

limerod,

I need this feature in Material files and solid explorer.

limerod,

It has 256GB of internal storage but includes an HD+ display? That resolution on a 6.78 is going to be noticeable. If they had reduced the internal and instead provided a full HD display, it would’ve been great. I’m more curious how the AOD will work with the LCD display. Will it drain a significant amount of battery or be negligible. Which would be explained by the HD panel.

Which FOSS degoogled Android rom would you recommend?

@askandroid

(you can recommend googled roms, just let me know it is)

limerod,

Do they also support widewine L1 or the downgraded L3.

limerod,
limerod,

Thanks for sharing. Good to know if i was into custom roms. At least pixel devices would be feasible for widevine.

limerod,

Wow, 12000mm² vs 5000². Now, this is something I can get behind. Samsung (and perhaps google) should take note. Especially for exynos.

limerod,

The microarchitecture may be the same, but the performance won’t be similar to snapdragon 855. The broadcom chipset is manufactured on a 16nm process, whereas the snapdragon was based around 7nm. Plus, it was octa core vs. the quad core of BCM. The videocore graphics also do not inspire that much confidence. The pink display issue also highlights driver issues. So, it appears to be a combination of all. With software improvements, things could change. But, genshin impact, honkai starrail are a little outside its league

limerod,

This build of android doesn’t appear to be optimized for the pi. With optimisation, it should perform better barring chipset limitations. Anyways, how was the performance on the default OS and running Linux apps like Firefox, Chrome, etc. Was it smooth?

limerod,

adb shell pm compile -a -f --check-prof false -m everything

adb shell pm compile -a -f --check-prof false --compile-layouts

adb shell pm bg-dexopt-job

What do these commands do? From 1st to last.

limerod,

Hmm, let’s see. Your microarchitecture and clock speed do dictate your processor performance. But, equally important is your process node. If it’s built on an inefficient node, it will take more power and produce more heat to provide the same and sometimes even worse performance as other chips built on a more efficient node.

This became so much clear when qualcomm released the snapdragon 8 gen 1 and the snapdragon 8 +gen 1. The 1st was built on a samsung node and performed poorly compared to its predecessors. The 8+gen 1 was built on an improved TSMC process, which actually improved performance and provided better battery life.

Then, there are times that your SoC implementation is poor. Like for example, the infamous snapdragon 810 (and 808). That was a dumpster fire full of throttling issues.

You can watch this geekerwan video to know more: youtu.be/s0ukXDnWlTY?si=U3yV7Rr88-5g7Lr_

limerod,

I know that. I was just asking what the actual adb commands do like the compile-layouts parameter, the last bgdexopt job. Why are all 3 necessary. Samsung has a galaxy app booster that appears to do something similar.

New phone with Corning Gorilla Glass Victus: should I still buy a screen protector? (www.corning.com)

Basically the title, I received a new price with a significant price tag (at least for me). My previous ones I didn’t care much so they weren’t protected. Given that I’d like to keep this one in good shape I’d like to know your experiences: does it still make sense to buy screen protectors nowadays? If so, also on newer...

limerod,

On my previous phones, I never applied a screen protector. For my current one, I did because the oleophobic wore off, so I had to get one to not deal with the stickiness and roughness that increases with time. Plus, a screen protector costs way less than an actual display replacement. So, I made the choice.

limerod,

Interesting camera design choice.

limerod,

Haha, good one. If you try, you can even get a 12GB ram version from Chinese OEMs for cheap. Just remember it would be less than the Macbook Pro’s 8GB unified memory.

limerod,

Wow, 24GB of Ram. It sucks that samsung is stingy and doesn’t provide 12GB of ram in their regular smartphones. That aside. Do redmagic smartphones have anything comparable to samsung dex or motorola ‘ready for’ for improved desktop like experince?

My internal fight over what device to buy

Hello there! This is my problem: I’m going to buy a new smartphone, and I’d really like to degoogle myself as much as possible. The idea would be to buy a device compatible with LineageOS, but… Supported devices are usually older models, and often there are newer devices with better specs for the same price, that does not...

limerod,

Wow, I didn’t expect you to be on lemmy. I was subscribed to your privatelife subreddit when I was on reddit. Do you have anything similar on lemmy?

limerod,

Yeah, seeing 9k on Delta, I checked the settings for this icon pack, and it says 16k. Both material you and the light/Dark version.

Are Webapps in 2023 on android a way to go?

I mostly use Webapps (f-droid.org/en/packages/com.tobykurien.webapps/) for access to socials and have quick links to services where I don’t want to login every time. Don’t know if there’s an alternative way to do this beside use apps like Insular or other App Isolation like, don’t even know why browser don’t do this by...

limerod,

That secure ssl was an android requirement. You need a web browser if you want to bypass that. Apps using webview can not do that by default unless they opt in. You can try to open a bug report and see if they do that.

limerod,

Yeah, if he had clicked. He would’ve won the iPhone 16 Pro max! Wasted opportunity, such a shame.

why does everyone hate material you?

So I switched to a pixel 7 from an iphone 10 xs a few months back, and I’ve absolutely loved it in comparison to the locked down nature of an iphone. So I think to look up material you on YouTube for fun, and decide to read the comments and found that people hated it. Quick googling led to me to find two reddit threads and an...

limerod,

Does everyone, now? Personally, I love it. I use Niagara and Smart launcher 6. The recent update of the niagara launcher made it even more consistent with icons. I love how the colors match on most of my apps.

limerod,

The standard RCS lacks e2e encryption. You wouldn’t have been able to use other clients with the google messages app either way even if they were developed.

limerod,

Relatively speaking, as long as it’s on the latest version of android(android 13, 14 and maybe even 12), alongside the latest security patch. It should be fine. After that date, depending on what security issues pop up, it would be best to get a new device if required.

If you are worried and have reasons that make you believe it could be bad, consider saving up for an upgrade and combine trade-in offers to do so later.

limerod,

Awesome. Liked the new update. I have been waiting for this icon assistant upgrade since the start of the year.

The new icons are refreshing. Hopefully, it will see an update where you can apply its icon pack to other launchers.

limerod,

Android already has a setting for that. Disable battery optimization for apps you want to run in the background. Samsung goes much further with their sleeping, deep sleeping, and never sleeping lists.

limerod,

This has not been true for me since oneui 4 and currently oneui 5. Apps can continue running however long within reason(doze). The ones that need to be running 24/7 like accubattery, tasker work fine when you set battery optimization to unrestricted. Others like adguard power through without issue. Only apps that take too many resources or frequent crashes that slow down your device get automatically closed — shown in device care. The only times my apps restart is when running heavy games and apps that take gigs in memory.

limerod,

These android updates are usually found by Mishaal Rahmaan. You can check and follow him on mastodon if you are a user: androiddev.social/

limerod,

You can remove Facebook the app itself. But, you can not remove the services, installer app, or the manager app. https://reddthat.com/pictrs/image/d415e206-48e4-4ced-b0d1-a01b5864b55c.jpeg

limerod,

Samsung phones do have bloatware. These meta services are for one, appcloud. The galaxy store trying to push the deals and news consent wherever it gets launched. The lockscreen glance service. It can be worse. But samsung is not a saint you make it to be.

limerod,

If it’s Facebook, I’m afraid it does all of it.

limerod,

What’s the workaround for apps detecting usb debuging or other user apps on your device? I’m not rooted, but use shizuku and WiFi adb for certain features on my android.

limerod,

Health connect is still in beta it will be a while before they introduce that feature. You can let others apps like samsung Health and sleep for android backup the required data and use it to restore. Make sure to test well if it actually works to avoid data loss.

limerod,

Considering, they ship software where you lose data and need to factory reset due to faulty updates (android 14 storage issue). It can be worse.
