Well, if we want to look at in a theological sense, I don’t believe any deity imbued a corporation with a soul. So I was thinking in the “ethos” sense.
Privacy concerns are a very popular and valid talking point on Lemmy, so I would like to gather your thoughts and opinions on this. (Apologies if it’s already been discussed!)...
People also say “well did you pay them anything??” to excuse when an ad/data supported business abuses a member. Take Facebook, for instance. I don’t care if we’re “the product” or customers… one way or the other, they make money from people using the site.
My question while reading the article is “what material is this?” The answer doesn’t seem to be in the linked scientific paper either, just that it is “Fabricated by a Selective Laser Sintering 3D Printing Technology”. I assume that means some kind of glass.
Not sure about the average person, but street racing and tuning have always been a big subculture in japan. People into that are certainly as in love with their cars as people who do that in the US.
“Based on your consent, we may collect and use your biometric information for safety, security, and identification purposes,” The revised policy of X(Twitter) is expected to go into effect on September 29, 2023....
It already has. That’s why Twitter and reddit have tightened their API policies and locked down websites for non-signed in users. Not to prevent AI training… just so they can charge for it.
The thing is theologists made that up in the Middle Ages to explain how having the three “god” entities made sense in the context of the rest of the religion. Jesus and Jehovah seemed to conflict with the “one god” thing, and who really knows about the “holy spirit”, so they invented the Doctrine of the Trinity to try to make it make sense.
it has to perform flawlessly 99.999999% of the time. The number of 9s matters. Otherwise, you are paying some moron to kill you and perhaps other people.
I got that from someone as projection - as in, if I didn’t let her say some insulting and inaccurate things and then stomp away, it was supposedly because I had to have the last word.
As far as “you have to be right” I point out that being correct is objective and yes, I’d like to have conversations that make sense. If I’m wrong, tell me how and I’m fine with that. Otherwise, I will indeed say things that I believe are correct and true.
I understand that not everyone is fortunate to have money saved to be able to have the leeway to leave jobs whenever they feel like it and so forth. But I just feel like people have lost their sense of self-respect when it comes down to employment....
It depends. You have to make a benefit-risk-downside analysis, such as whether the job pays well, what your other prospects are pay-wise, if another job might have a better or worse working environment in terms of supervisors and colleagues, how convenient the job is (work from home? commute across town?) and how switching jobs will look on your resume, as in, have you been there only 6 months? 3 years? 6 years?
Sometimes people can’t do that for reasons like family members. For instance I’ve lived away from my hometown for years, but now my parents are getting older and I don’t want to be 800 miles away currently. Or say your spouse has a job they’re satisfied with.
Alongside a daily ration of gruesome videos of drone strikes and false claims about Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky, they share ads for anything from cryptocurrency to fashion....
Sounds kind of familiar from over here in the US. Conservative media puts up the most ridiculous bullshit propaganda on social media while calling normal news “fake news”, as pioneered by the orange gibbon… and no coincidence that Russia uses the same term.
No, graft is used as a term for things like police demanding weekly payments in exchange for protection, acting like a local gang or mafia, or politicians soliciting bribes. It’s when anyone in an official position abuses their authority in such a way.
I consider “tuna fish” to be outdated and regional to the South and maybe Midwest US. I grew up hearing it but at some point started wondering why tf we would say that rather than just tuna, so I’ve made a point to just say tuna since then.
Google the search engine and Facebook the social media site function as uber-media: they control access to readers and viewers. It’s difficult for actual media to not be on facebook or google news, though larger companies have been increasingly trying.
YouTube is slightly different, having a lot of content made specifically for YouTube. It is profitable but not nearly as much as Google’s other businesses - still, on it’s own, it would be a significant corporation itself. I suppose part of the value is it prevents someone else from having a large business hosting long-form videos. They’ve been trying hard to copy TikTok though, for whatever reason… possibly because it’s easier to stick ads in between 1 minute videos than 60 minute videos.
Facebook/Meta has done their best to evolve over time, since the original Facebook website has been somewhat dying (in the US) since around 2015. WhatsApp is huge for them, mainly outside the US. Instagram was a good purchase which they evolved into at least 3 incarnations since then… added videos and messages, basically making it more like Facebook, then added Stories to copy Snapchat after Snap refused to sell to them. Then, added Reels to copy TikTok. And more recently, released their Twitter imitation, Threads. The Metaverse thing seems to have been a flop, possibly because they’re facing competition from companies like Valve and Sony who actually have a clue about the game business, and nobody really wants to do VR Facebook outside the context of a game (if they did, they’d play Second Life…). Pretty much the Metaverse thing was a dumb idea. Oculus is somewhat successful, though.
The deal with Threads and Instagram is they’re sharing the same account base. Rather than make a 3rd or 4th product with a new set of signins and credentials, you just activate your Instagram account on Threads. It seems like a decent idea. It is notable they chose Instagram vs. Facebook… but also, Threads as a product is more similar to Instagram. Instagram has been way more trendy with their desired market for several years now, too.
Sure, I agree that’s their vision for the Zucka-Metaverse. It’s a somewhat sound theory, if people get used to it and the software is sufficient. It might take another generation or two before people are really into that.
I’m pretty sick of this “we had to jack up prices due to inflation! Oh, also we just made record profits” bullshit as well. It’s price gouging, squeezing everything they can out of consumers, and that’s it.
When I first started using Lemmy it seemed like such a nice place with interesting discussions. It seemed like the first group of people to join after the app exodus were being quite careful to be respectful of the existing culture....
I am relatively new here, having embraced Lemmy after fleeing reddit in June. During my short tenure I have observed a change in culture and decline in politeness and respect for others. However, I think that some claims about the rise of toxic behavior are overstated.
In any event, it’s like a city growing from 500 people to 5,000, or from 50,000 people to 500,000. Of course the culture is going to be changed. Such growth is important to avoid stagnation and death by attrition, however. I think at this point Lemmy has achieved a critical mass where it is likely to continue growing. When people ask “how can we grow Lemmy faster or further”, though, I question whether that is really a good idea. Sites like reddit are somewhat too large, which is great for niche interests but fairly horrible for the most popular communities.
So, I heard several people now mention HAARP as the cause for all the natural disasters that have been happening lately. And here I thought the cause was rampant pollution and global warming!...
An eccentric friend told me recently we “hit Saturn with HAARP!” Or was it Jupiter? Not sure. But anyway, these theories have been around for quite some time. Someone else pointed out the ”Angels” book, which I haven’t read but recall hearing about a long time ago.
I can fall asleep almost anywhere. I routinely fall asleep in the break room at work. Once, I was helping a friend fix his car, and I fell asleep on his garage floor when he went inside to get water....
Also reddit was invaded by shills and bullshit politics around 2015. For instance r/conspiracy turned from honest discussion of fringe theories like UFOs to ridiculous right wing horseshit about Hillary Clinton or whatever.
Former President Donald Trump was indicted for an unprecedented third time on August 1, adding another set of serious federal charges to the mounting legal issues he faces.
Yeah, I did have an experience like this. It’s a long story and difficult to explain, but here’s a TL;DR: i had a colleague who I became friends with for a while. He was going through some long mental breakdown exacerbated by addiction to prescription drugs. He was also desperately infatuated with this girl we knew who was interested in me, and not him (and he’d been married 25 years to her former roommate). He turned on me and tried his hardest to sabotage me personally and professionally, telling people a lot of different bizarre things that were not true, really insane things like I was plotting to steal their website and saying mean things about them behind their backs. He was respected in the community online, but people didn’t realize that in the town he lived he had destroyed his reputation and was considered a bit of a lunatic.
His smear campaign against me resulted in a LOT of trauma, worry, missed opportunities, general negativity and stress, for no reason at all other than that he was on a ton of drugs (Ambien, antidepressants, benzos, alcohol), losing his mind, and lashing out I think to harm me because he was so upset about his own life. Eventually, I guess killed himself (nobody will tell me, because they all were convinced I was his bitter enemy, though I just sort of wished he’d stop fucking with me).
I kind of felt bad when I heard he died, but at the same time, I was relieved and sort of happy about it, as in, fuck that guy. He appointed himself my total enemy for no reason at all. I missed him as a friend but what he did to try to harm me was so extreme that I was just happy it was over.
Thank you, yes, it was literally crazy. The word for that is… slander! Unfortunately to sue someone in the US for slander, you have to prove they knew it was false, intended to harm you, and it actually caused damages to you. Kind of a high hurdle especially when none of us have money for lawyers, but it’s not like that would even help.
I hadn’t even done anything to this guy at the time he flipped out on me. I had just spent 3 weeks at his house and he and his wife asked me to move in with them. The worst was that I said negative things about his dream love, who again, had zero interest in him romantically - I said she was taking advantage of us and I didn’t think she was a good person, which was true. So, he told her that, plus other aforementioned ludicrous things (I was “plotting to steal her website”, which wasn’t even possible since it was all in her name, and she knew that, but he didn’t). But she was offended and blacklisted me, herself. I ended up calling (emailing, ha) him and telling him to fuck off, which made him more upset. Later I made up with her and we had a 7-8 month relationship which was pretty messy itself, then when we broke up, she started slandering me, dating someone else, and that was when he apparently ended it.
It was about 10 years ago now, but it’s still one of the weirdest chapters of my life. I had my own problems at the time and didn’t really need those problems. I was traveling around the country at the time trying to hang out with people and go to conventions in our art community. I feel slightly bad as before this, I liked him a fair bit and had no reason not to, but striving to destroy me for a couple years wasn’t that great.
