New GM: Player wants a new character early in the game

We’re 3 game sessions deep into a Vampire the Masquerade chronicle. I’ve just heard from one of my players that they feel like they’ve put a bit too much of themselves into their character, and they’re starting to get uncomfortable with it. As such, they’d like to roll up a new char sheet and bring their current...

K3zi4,

Few options available here I’d say, though I’m not aware of Vampire the Masquerade! Do the other players know that this player wants to reroll?

Definitely work closely with the player throughout the process and have them make the major decisions needed, though it’s an excellent opportunity to drop a shocking moment on the rest of the party if they are happy for the character to die in order to feed the tension and danger of the story. It could be a good opportunity to introduce a huge villain in the story, a taste of what they’ll eventually have to face down the line.

Other options could include taking something from the characters backstory that prompts them to leave the group in search of their own answers- retiring the character but leaving the option open for the future. Your players new character could be introduced as a prisoner or hostage, or even as an individual on their own mission that aligns with the current group.

There are so many different ways to approach, but the most important thing is ensuring the player is happy with the decisions. Having a little brainstorming session with them in private and putting a plan together you’re both happy with is absolutely key though!

K3zi4,

Give me animated cosmere over films any day, it’s so expansive and only growing. A well done animated series would be incredible and easy to maintain.

K3zi4,

“We believe in free speech, so you should let us sell your data.”

K3zi4,

I just don’t feel comfortable having these big companies profiting from my information. If it’s that valuable to them, then they should be paying me for it.

Goodbye Youtube and thanks for all the fish (infosec.pub)

Youtube let the other shoe drop in their end-stage enshittification this week. Last month, they required you to turn on Youtube History to view the feed of youtube videos recommendations. That seems reasonable, so I did it. But I delete my history every 1 week instead of every 3 months. So they don’t get much from my choices....

K3zi4,

Firefox + ublock origin is the way forward.

However, as a teacher, my school IT system default browser is chrome, and adverts on YT videos when you’re trying to teach a lesson can really suck all the momentum and attention from the class.

Chrome allows you to save javascript as a bookmark URL called bookmarklets. I’m not so clued up on java, but I found this code that zips through the adverts super quickly. Someone can probably improve on this;

javascript: var v = document.querySelector(‘video’); var t = 16; v.playbackRate = parseFloat(t)

K3zi4,

I’m not in the US, it’s a local council/regional thing. And most areas here have chromebooks for every student so that’s just become the default, I think. But yes, our IT tends to be a good 10-15 years behind the curve anyway. No money for resources either.

K3zi4,

Ah thanks, like I said, I don’t really know what I’m talking about! Good to know.

K3zi4,

Champ, I knew someone here would be able to improve on it!

K3zi4,

Totally get this, and the argument that free services can only remain so from selling your data to keep running. But it just seems like such a predatory thing, there was no negotiation in this. It was just inflicted on Internet users within ridiculously lengthy terms and conditions.

I understand the logic of it, but I completely disagree with how we got to this stage. It feels very perverse. And I am in total agreement that something definitely needs to be done- soon.

Protest Songs: why do I feel like there were many more (and many more that were popular) in the 60’s and 70’s?

I’m a guy approaching 60, so I’ll start by saying my perception may be wrong. That could be because the protest songs from the late 60’s and early 70’s weren’t the songs I heard live on the radio but because they were the successful ones that got replayed. More likely, it’s because music is much more fractured than...

K3zi4,

Just incase you didn’t actually know, but that is Refused, they were hired to make the music as the fictional band in the game!

K3zi4,

The beautiful thing about YouTube is that fundamentally, it is still an incredible platform for anyone to be able to create content for the entite world to watch. That is so cool when you really think about it.

However, the horrible thing about YouTube, is the algorithm that is designed to push all sorts of views and opinions onto people, burying all of the actual good content beneath thousands of hours of utter shite and adverts.

If you know where to look, you can still get all the entertainment and information you need from it!

K3zi4,

Votes do count, of course they do. (Depending on the country), but the problem is the industrialised propaganda machine consistently convincing people to vote against their own interests time and time again in order to protect the wealth, status, and motivations of the richest in society around the world.

They drum up news stories on culture war bullshit and pick scapegoats to direct anger towards. Immigration, LGBTQ+, Race, currently Trans people appear to be the popular target. They do this so we continue to direct anger at each other and not the people in charge.

If you can convince someone the reason they didn’t get a payrise, or are struggling during an economic crisis, is because of someone else, then nobody is going to be aiming at the few who are hoarding all of the wealth and building their own mini-empires.

Trickle down economics is the best lie ever told.

K3zi4,

Music Producer input here. It’s sort of been a general rule of etiquette in production that piracy is fine if you intend to buy the product.

A lot of the better plugins can be very expensive and prior to subscription models, were limited in free trials. It can take some time to know if a particular plugin works with your workflow and gives you the results you like over multiple different projects.

I’ve always stuck with this. If I see something I like the look of, I’ll pirate it, use it over a bunch of projects and if I find myself relying on it then I’ll save up to buy it legitimately. Of course, there’s a fair bit of trust involved there, and a lot of people will be happy enough to keep the pirated version and try to find a new crack every time the DAW or plugin requires an update,

No chance I would have been able to afford half of the software I use in my workflow when I first started out, nobody can. But I eventually found my flow then caught up and paid it back.

I consider that ethical piracy. Or maybe I’m just justifying it to myself. But that’s how it was implied when I first started out in college and it’s a good system where you can still eventually support the small companies that make quality products that work for you.

K3zi4,

How come they delete 1 star reviews for review bombing, but clearly 5 star bot reviews are fair game?

K3zi4,

Anyone tried review bombing with 5 star reviews and scathing comments to see if their system kicks in to remove all fake 5 star reviews in the last x hours? Or is this a manual removal of reviews they do?

K3zi4,

Fun fact, this company eventually became Rockstar.

K3zi4, (edited )

For everyone suggesting Revanced, I used it for a while and found it to be incredibly slow and breaking up videos to buffer all the time. Was I using a dodgy version or was I missing something? I had it from the app store if I remember right. (Might be thinking of Vanced??)

Edit: Sorry folks, I wasn’t bashing revanced, I was just pretty sure I had a fake app and wanted to make sure. Thanks for the replies putting me on the right track!

K3zi4,

Yep, that’s confirmed my suspicions then. Thank you!

Reddit changed their minds, do a half step back - RIF can access Reddit but doesn't accept login

Seems that someone at Reddit decided to grant read access to RIF, this morning I opened the app just for kicks and it wouldn't load anything. Well I tried again after lunch (Europe CET time) and it could access the front page but I was logged out. Trying to login shows a different logon page and even with valid credentials gives...

K3zi4,

Nah. Absolutely fuck Reddit. I paid for RiF, I’m happy with my contribution. Used it for 12 years. Sadly removed it from my home screen this morning when I saw it was over.

I absolutely refuse to provide reddit traffic, even if it does now show content. If the reason it’s showing content is really due to reddit backpedalling, then fuck them, because they’re ONLY doing it now that it’s affected them. A little late for that.

I’ll return to reddit only if they reverse this API shit, and if spez gets the boot. Until then, I’m done.

K3zi4,

Been a RiF user for 12 years. Never thought I’d see the day I’d purge my reddit account and not look back. But here we are! Glad to be here with you all, here’s to our new communities.
