My friend from Adelaide always says crisps.

zeppo,
@zeppo@lemmy.world avatar

We got to know each other well prior to her conversion. She took a strict vow of silence, excluding “crisps”. We still talk. It’s impressive how much she can express with inflection.

zeppo,
@zeppo@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, sometimes when a comment gets wildly misinterpreted or goes wrong due to early attention by people with bad attitudes, I leave it up… other times, I get sick of repeated replies by abusive people and just block people and delete it. Reddit voting in particular (and some Lemmy lately) goes with trends, like if a post starts to get downvotes, people are more likely to downvote it, especially if it’s ambiguous. People trying to interpret it will choose a negative interpretation if it already has downvotes, like the other downvotes are a sign “other people determined this was bad”. Even worse, there is a certain behavior where people reply to someone who has been downvoted to try to correct or chide them, like it’s their opportunity to act superior and talk down to someone.

“Weird how this tea makes my jaw numb”

zeppo,

It’s some sort of cognitive dissonance that also gives credence to coincidence.

Well, it’s like a Cornish game hen, just not for people in North America.

Anyone has the famous reddit story with the immortal snail?

There was this legendary comment on reddit to a thread asking people what would their plan be if they were immortal and got milion dollars, but there was a superintelligent immortal snail also with milion dollars who would want to kill them. I was trying to find it but as far as I can tell OP removed it. Does anyone here have it...

I’m about to show this lemmy thread what REAL intelligence looks like

YOU DID OH NO SNAIL

YOU SET ME STRAIGHT (sobbing)

zeppo, (edited )
@zeppo@lemmy.world avatar

I put the snail in a metal box and threw it down an abandoned well in Bolivia. I’m all set.

WAIT I WAS SO WRONG SNAIL IS SUPREME I Am sorry

Oh

zeppo,
@zeppo@lemmy.world avatar

The snail is after you, so at some point it will catch up. Then you fuck it up

The way they can spoof originating numbers is absurd. The phone system needs to fix that somehow.

zeppo,
@zeppo@lemmy.world avatar

The problem is the people doing this maliciously are already breaking several laws and scamming people, and certainly don’t care whether it’s legal or not. They’re also outside of the US.

For instance an ex-girlfriend answered a phone one day that was from a bank number, Chase, which was saved in her Contacts, so she assumed it was really them. They told her some stupid story about a fradulent Zelle payment not going through and she swears she signed in to her bank and saw a $5000 payment there declined that then, she says, disappeared from the list. Then they told her she had to send money to a special service number so they could ‘backtrace’ the fraudulent payment. So she did (she was also credulous/dense/gullible I guess). Obviously, this was bullshit. it was especially annoying because I walked over a couple of times and asked her “wtf are you doing? Who is that?” and she just waved me away and ignored me. She ended up losing $600. So anyway, the main thing that gave them credibility to her was calling from the Chase number.

zeppo,
@zeppo@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, I’m sure there are legitimate uses. Another would be a call center that wants to show the main customer service number rather than the phone of the specific person speaking.

I would think it’s quite possible given that some systems output a video signal over USB, which is less capable than ethernet.

zeppo,
@zeppo@lemmy.world avatar

The biggest culprits are probably polyester and acrylic fabrics, plus tires… and there isn’t likely to be a will to do anything about those. But yeah, glitter is annoying.

Far more people already know PHP than Rust, though. They’re also very different languages. While the syntax for Rust is nicer than other languages used for systems programming, there are people who question whether it is really appropriate for a web app. Certainly nobody questions whether that’s what PHP is good for.

zeppo,
@zeppo@lemmy.world avatar

Definitely, but I think we’d get kicked out of Ikea…

zeppo,
@zeppo@lemmy.world avatar

Oh… phew. yes, thank you. I’d like Cheese ‘N Eggs with City Ham please.

zeppo,
@zeppo@lemmy.world avatar

I hadn’t heard that, but just listened to it! The vocals are hilarious.

EA was huge even then! that EA loading screen with the color cycling is burned into my memory.

i think they’re trying to emphasize the “OR DIE” part.

Where is the acorn warehouse at Cheesman? On the roof of the big greek looking structure, maybe? Or in a tree?

zeppo,

Same, I had cable at home but couldn’t get a broadband adapter… from what I recall they were discontinued or something and you could only get one from Japan. My brother got one of the gigantic PSO controllers with a keyboard…

zeppo,
@zeppo@lemmy.world avatar

Have you seen them? It was a pretty wild controller.

Dreamcast Keyboard Controller

zeppo,
@zeppo@lemmy.world avatar

Same here. I’d played Quake and Half-life online but PSO was the first RPG/MMO type game I played, which is the only type I play now.

Wow, amazing that Mr. Dressup had a similar show on TV in Canada for nearly 30 years and this is the first time I’ve heard of him.

zeppo,

I super-love the character select music to this game… but it’s only about 12 seconds long, ha.

To address the biggest one to use Firefox I actually have it on my phone it’s just remembering to break the habit.

Set FF as default then hide the icon for chrome in a folder.

There’s certainly not 13,000 active communities.

The ‘All’ feed is just bloated with lemmy.world posts

What does this even mean? It’s the largest instance by far. You need for posts need to be more distributed among instances or… ?

zeppo,
@zeppo@lemmy.world avatar

It doesn’t really matter what instance it’s on, though. Communities end up wherever someone started them and they got traction.

What kind of detergent do you use, and do you use fabric softener? Personally I can’t stand the smell of mainstream scented detergents - they got worse and worse for me over time until I was wondering “why would I want my clothes to smell like synthetic grapes and weird cotton candy crap?”. At this point it irritates my nose and sustained exposure makes my lips swell slightly and my eyes turn red (I must be allergic to the fragrances somehow).

I am fine with unscented All or Tide, but mainly use unscented ‘natural’ detergents like Seventh Generation or ECOS. Dryer sheets and fabric softener I avoid entirely, even unscented ones. Fabric softener to me makes my clothes feel like they’re coated in weird oil (makes sense, that’s what it is I guess). I use these wool spheres the size of billiard balls for anti-static and that works great.

zeppo,
@zeppo@lemmy.world avatar

Who the fuck knows. Stupid shit like this that barely even makes sense is why Elron is famed for being an incredibly pretentious but dim tool.

zeppo,
@zeppo@lemmy.world avatar

It’s conceivable but a stretch to say that some people have those beliefs to the extent of a religion. However to say they’re actually a religion would be simply bizarre… nobody thinks Richard Stallman created the earth or something.

zeppo,
@zeppo@lemmy.world avatar

I view it more like: don’t let proprietary software manufacturers fuck you over, not something about morality.

zeppo,
@zeppo@lemmy.world avatar

That makes sense, he came up with something utterly soulless!
