My family went to Tijuana when I was about 5. My brother and I saw an unconscious/dead person being dragged into an alley and were ‘wtf?’. My parents just said uh, nevermind about that.

I remember after 9/11 I took a flight out of Minneapolis and there were security/police/whatever with automatic rifles. Pretty surprising as I’d never seen anything like that in the US.

The troll thing was going on a few weeks ago but I haven’t seen any activity like that recently. I sometimes use that instance directly as well as a kbin and a couple others. I browse New generally and haven’t seen any illicit content either.

Republicans have been vocal in support of Israel. I mean Lindsey Graham, a major trump backer, said Israel should completely level Gaza. People criticizing Biden and acting like Republicans would not be even worse regarding Palestine are not grounded in reality.

zeppo,
@zeppo@lemmy.world avatar

Aaaand… what about Japan?

zeppo,
@zeppo@lemmy.world avatar

Not too suave. Pretty sure “I’ll dick you down” isn’t going to work on most 36 year old ladies on tinder, especially in a transactional manner they could get fired for.

zeppo,
@zeppo@lemmy.world avatar

Sure, she’s risking getting fired just for approaching him in a situation like Tinder. A romantic or sexual relationship with a student could get her fired, but especially explicitly in exchange for a grade, which was apparently not her idea.

They said the tobacco companies lobby to loosen restrictions, not that their efforts have been successful.

I spent way too much time on Trexels for a while… silly little mobile resource management game. It became more ridiculous when I figured out you could cheat by changing the clock on your phone.

Whatever! You’re working for Big… uh… anti-Parent!

zeppo,
@zeppo@lemmy.world avatar

Why would that even be a problem? Plenty of blind people in ancient stories, myths and legends. Probably better off without this person.

zeppo,
@zeppo@lemmy.world avatar

Hmm, that doesn’t mean everyone is perfect and beautiful though. Maybe they can’t afford to pay a sorcerer. Oh, I know! Maybe they have a curse.

zeppo,

I’mn not sure about the typical hoot but apparently owls make many different sounds including higher pitched ones.

zeppo,
@zeppo@lemmy.world avatar

Wow, that was way ahead of its time for 1993. I remember in 1991 or so my dad showing me how he could connect to a library in Italy over the internet, maybe using Gopher or something. My reaction was ‘why tf would we want to do that? Sounds useless’. Not sure why, because in 1984 we had a Commodore 64 game with a big ad for People Link. I asked my mom if we could sign up because chatting with other people through a computer sounded awesome and she told me no, I’d get molested (also very forward-thinking).

Why are we so concerned with oxygen production yet we never hear about nitrogen production, though we actually need 78% nitrogen vs 21% oxygen to survive?

Excess oxygen is actually harmful to humans, but all the climate warnings are about losing oxygen, not nitrogen edit: but when we look for habitable planets, our focus is ‘oxygen rich atmosphere’, not ‘nitrogen rich’, and in medical settings, we’re always concerned about low oxygen, not nitrogen....

zeppo,
@zeppo@lemmy.world avatar

Is there some threat to the worlds supply of atmospheric nitrogen?

zeppo,
@zeppo@lemmy.world avatar

I suppose because we don’t really use the nitrogen - it’s inert, unlike oxygen which is part of vital respiration. I’m no expert but it’s conceivable some other mix of gases could work as the inert portion besides nitrogen, but oxygen is required. Seems like it would take a lot of luck to find the right concentration though.

zeppo,
@zeppo@lemmy.world avatar

Sure, I understand it’s one of the 3 basic plant fertilizers and plays a role in human biology. I’m referring nitrogen as a gas and its role in human respiration. It’s commonly referred to as an inert gas. I think that mainly refers to respiration and combustion.

zeppo,
@zeppo@lemmy.world avatar

I think it could work? Not really sure. Probably sound enough scientifically for a 1st gen Star Trek episode.

zeppo,
@zeppo@lemmy.world avatar

Would argon work?

Use one of the alternative interfaces

a.lemmy.world - Alexandrite UI
photon.lemmy.world - Photon UI
m.lemmy.world - Voyager mobile UI
old.lemmy.world - A familiar UI

The ones I remember that would be 30-40 years old are imperial on one side and metric on the other. Maybe that changed, idk.

zeppo,

I’m sort of cold until I put on some other clothes. But it’s okay, I needed to change those sweatpants anyhow.

zeppo,

Probably because a gnome would be silly. I presume that’s not the image they’re looking for - garden gnomes, Christmas, fairy tales.

zeppo,
@zeppo@lemmy.world avatar

I think they’re happy with just a slightly silly foot logo. “Gnome Network Object Model Environment” is a serious sounding name and I don’t think an animal mascot is what they had in mind for branding (seeing as, they don’t have one). An anime gnome might even be the exact opposite of what their intent is. GNOME is looking to be seen as a professional alternative to MacOS and Windows. Speaking of which, note that Windows and OSX don’t have a mascot either.

zeppo,
@zeppo@lemmy.world avatar

Gnome Chomsky would be pretty hilarious. Kinda political though.

True, Windows had a couple characters (well, Clippy was for Office). The idea of those was a digital assistant character though, not really a mascot.

zeppo,
@zeppo@lemmy.world avatar

Less silly than a whole goofy gnome.

zeppo,
@zeppo@lemmy.world avatar

That’s interesting. What that indicates to me is that they feel it’s not advantageous marketing-wise to have one in other regions.

Oh… hummus joke.

How can I block posts from all bot accounts of specific instance? (alien.top)

I do not want to block all bots. I only want to block bots from specific instance. More specifically, the @alien.top instance is using most, if not all, bot accounts with random usernames. It uses that instance to post in communities of other instances. I thought about blocking other instances. But the main issue lies with...

zeppo, (edited )
@zeppo@lemmy.world avatar

I’ve wondered wtf is up with that instance. Someone floods certain communities - apple on hardware.watch for instance - with endless tech support questions, like pages and pages of them a day. Steamdeck on hardware.watch for instance has a dozen posts in the last 5 minutes, so it’s a ridiculous flood.

A few of the accounts seem more legitimate than others and actually have a history, but most just have 1 post. The questions aren’t badly written and I wonder where they come from - don’t sound like LLM, but I just don’t believe at all that 8,000 random people signed up at this Alien instance and want to ask one tech related question and then disappear. The content doesn’t seem harmful or scammy, though, they’re all things a normal person might post. Is the content copied from reddit? Is this someone’s idea of kickstarting these Lemmy communities? It’s all a bit odd.

Anyway it’s a limited number of communities these apparent bots post to, so I simply blocked those communities.

zeppo,
@zeppo@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, I answered a couple questions before I noticed something was off. I guess it’s adding content to Lemmy but it’s more an annoying waste of time.

zeppo,
@zeppo@lemmy.world avatar

At least lemmit has a blurb that explains the content comes from reddit. Looking at alien.top itself, they do explain that it’s a page for “Fediverser” which posts content from reddit, but it’s sort of vague - makes it seem like people from reddit are signing up there to do this on purpose, but I’m not sure if that’s really how it works.

And yeah, it’s useless to respond to if the person asking isn’t going to get the reply. I’m not sure why people think auto-reddit spam would be a useful thing for lemmy.

zeppo,
@zeppo@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, I didn’t really understand the description. You sign up by authenticating with reddit, and then it automatically connects you with the same subs you have on reddit?

I see “Your account will be activated and you will be subscribed to Lemmy communities that have a reddit counterpart.” but also “create bot accounts to mirror the original accounts on a corresponding fediverse-enabled server”. Hmm.

Right, I mean, I don’t think we’d want Lemmy to just become a clone of reddit with all the same people. Not being ran by a lame corp would still be an advantage but for now I think discourse on Lemmy is higher quality and I hope it stays that way.

zeppo,
@zeppo@lemmy.world avatar

I read more about the project and it seems interesting. I suppose 2 way communication to sync accounts between reddit and lemmy would be interesting… would the reddit TOS allow that? Or would the reddit admins tolerate it for long? I suppose you’ve looked into it.

The problem is the current state is confusing… if you look at the communities posted in by the bots, it is a huge flood of posts, like sometimes 20 posts in 15 minutes. I guess that would be different if Lemmy was more active, but it isn’t yet. Also, it’s confusing - one has to visit alien.top and github to have any idea what’s going on, and if the account holders aren’t receiving the posts, it’s sort of wasting people’s effort on lemmy and not creating true engagement. Perhaps a disclaimer like ‘this post mirrored by Fediverser’ would help.

zeppo,
@zeppo@lemmy.world avatar

Great, I think as my and other people’s experience illustrates it has been a bit confusing so far, being unexplained. The byline will help a lot, I think.

Sure, it’s useful as it is as long as people check into their Lemmy accounts. I suppose I would if I signed up and was aware there might be replies waiting for me on Lemmy in addition to Reddit.

zeppo,
@zeppo@lemmy.world avatar

That’s cool, I think that will help explain it. I didn’t realize the accounts for people on reddit were being created on lemmy automatically though. Do the reddit users even know it’s happening?

zeppo,
@zeppo@lemmy.world avatar

Which community do you mean? lemmy.world/c/drugs doesn’t seem to be that.

How do you know if your server (e.g. lemmy.world) is federated with another server?

I want to see a list for each popular server (e.g. the top 10 lemmy instances) and I want to see - for each instance - with whom they federate. How can I do this? Any sure-fire way to know if a instance like HexBear.net is being federated with lemmy.world? How do you know?

zeppo,
@zeppo@lemmy.world avatar

Go to the bottom of any page and there by the link to the modlog is a link “Instances”. That’s a long list of all instances that server is federated or defederated with. (It’s actually kind of disturbing how many federated instances there are that don’t seem to be active - possibly just slurping data? But that’s a different story).

Anyway, scroll down and make sure the whole page loaded, then search for the name of the one you’re looking for in your browser, and see if it’s on the federated or defederated list (Linked Instances vs. Blocked Instances).

zeppo,
@zeppo@lemmy.world avatar

I’m sure. I don’t know what the software does if an instance is active for a few days, then goes offline and doesn’t come back. It stays on the federation list, i presume? Probably a fair amount are also personal instances with 2-3 accounts.

zeppo,
@zeppo@lemmy.world avatar

That makes sense. We wouldn’t want the content to be deleted. I’ve seen there are a few communities where the original instance is now not functioning, but the content remains on this instance.

zeppo,
@zeppo@lemmy.world avatar

I was happy running my own successful website - did full stack, had a visual designer but I did everything technical from maintaining the webserver to the database to all the html, css, sql, python, PHP and JavaScript… but in retrospect it was a ridiculous amount of work for what I got paid, compared to what most people make for a tech job. I got burnt out and went back to an art career, but that wasn’t very profitable or easy. At this point I wish I maintained my tech skills but fuck, being an electrician or something would probably be way more lucrative and not more difficult.

Licking a rusty bar seems like it would be a good way to abrade your tongue and contract tetanus.

zeppo,
@zeppo@lemmy.world avatar

So, I don’t know where this iron bar is coming from.

zeppo,
@zeppo@lemmy.world avatar

Not quite the same but there’s a place in Denver that makes sweet potato vodka. So… I guess fermenting them works, which isn’t surprising. Since it is vodka it doesn’t really have a flavor of course.

zeppo,
@zeppo@lemmy.world avatar

Melitta, Hario and various others offer pour-over cone things made out of ceramic. I agree I’d prefer that to a plastic one as anything involving plastic and boiling water seems like a bad idea to me.

zeppo,
@zeppo@lemmy.world avatar

Sounds like an issue of paranoid old dudes. The best plan would be to copy and back them up, then give them to the BBC anonymously.

The entire thing of throwing old reels was incredibly stupid in the first place, of course.
