It was clear around then that we might as well jump ship. No reason to wait to the last minute… I was ready to de-reddit and not go there any more.

Reddit is spam driven. But people can also spam manually.

How to de-radicalize my mom's youtube algorithm?

She’s almost 70, spend all day watching q-anon style of videos (but in Spanish) and every day she’s anguished about something new, last week was asking us to start digging a nuclear shelter because Russia was dropped a nuclear bomb over Ukraine. Metabook just released a Twitter clone, Threads, which they say will use the ActivityPub protocol eventually (though it doesn’t now), and that will enable connections to networks such as Mastodon and Lemmy. Many people using those feel like we’re pleased to be on independent, open source internet app and worry that being connected to Zuckstagram will basically ruin it or they’ll try to take it over somehow.

For some unsolicited advice, you could do better with networking on Instagram through hashtags, following similar people and browsing their work. I posted desolate building photos for 2-3 years and ended up with ~500 followers, which isn’t really much but a lot more than 23.

They have made the algorithm steadily worse over the years, though. Back in 2013-2014 people I knew from a niche art community ended up with 5-50k and since then it has slowed down a huge amount. People whose followers increased by 20,000 from 2014-2016 have increased by maybe 3,000 in the subsequent 7 years.

zeppo,
@zeppo@lemmy.world avatar

If you want people to see your work, you have to find the popular hashtags for your niche. Check out photos by people who post similar stuff and see what they use. For my stuff I could have labeled them or but the tags in popular use are more like and .

Musk sure is tiresome. What ‘trade secrets’? Does he really think Meta doesn’t have the engineering capacity to make a twitter clone themselves? IG was already set up like a twitter where you have to post a photo. I’m still waiting for him to sue Microsoft, too.

zeppo,
@zeppo@lemmy.world avatar

To me it means “not a computer dork”. I always interpreted it as somewhat self-deprecating.

zeppo,
@zeppo@lemmy.world avatar

I got a tired of the cliched site culture and some people’s attitudes. I suppose it’s because it’s such a large slice of the public that you get more people being dicks and leaving drive-by jerky comments. The overdone in-jokes and pun threads got to be a bit much too. I needed something like Lemmy to demonstrate what I was missing on reddit.

zeppo,
@zeppo@lemmy.world avatar

Absolutely. We’d have to be nuts to think they’re not trying to take it over and ruin it.

zeppo,
@zeppo@lemmy.world avatar

Who do you believe are the best engineers in the world and where do they work?

zeppo,
@zeppo@lemmy.world avatar

Yep, their plan will be to take over the majority of the network, then start adding their own proprietary features and not adding features that the open source devs add, thereby taking control of the software.

zeppo,
@zeppo@lemmy.world avatar

Facebook and Instagram killed off the forums I used. I was highly involved with a niche art independent website forum which was pretty well known to people within the community, and then right around the time average people really started using the internet, Facebook boomed and then Instagram. Using those got huge within the community. The corresponding sub on reddit has never amounted to much at all.

zeppo,
@zeppo@lemmy.world avatar

Facebook replaced the discussion part because the average artist wasn’t nerdy/computery enough to use reddit, which was more obscure at the time (around 2011-2013). It’s still obscure compared to FB/IG even now. Then after IG started becoming popular, people hopped there because that’s what the customers were using, and at the same time the industry was flourishing.

It was also frustrating, having been involved in ecommerce website and stats development, to see people using Instagram as an auction site… the most feature-free platform to sell your work. Granted, it’s because our work (primarily glass pipes) wasn’t welcome on eBay, and eBay is overcomplicated and expensive, and Etsy allowed it but is sort of lame… but still, silly to see people have auctions in a chain of instagram comments, and then suffer all these various problems that ecommerce platforms were designed to overcome. Reserve price, reputation, record of bids, backup bids, requirement payment and follow-through. People would be “I sold and the buyer didn’t pay!” or “I bought equipment and they shipped me a brick!” and it’s like no kidding, that’s the reason ebay exists and you’re doing transactions in instagram comments.

So yeah, what you’re suggesting is basically for people to use Lemmy as a personal blog or website. I think that’s a good idea. Sort of something like tumblr. Many people are getting sick of not having an identity, not having a true connection to their customers, getting suddenly cut off from years of followers when a site decides to ban them and being lost on huge generic platforms that cover everything. There’s a bit of a movement towards personal websites. The best way to do that, though, is still to have your own website - I can picture that some people will have problems with instance admins who are just as arbitrary and unaccountable as large corp social media, maybe even more. So the best thing for an artist to do would be to run lemmy or pixelfed on their own domain and server, and federate. Then people from the lemmifediverse can follow and comment, whether they’re on your instance or not, and you could also add sales software, and you can’t be cut off short of losing your domain.

Same on Twitter. Back pre-Elron I was suspended for the stupidest crap: I said I thought Trump would be too old to run for office next year, as he lived an unhealthy lifestyle. That was “wishing harm or violence”, like, what? I didn’t voice an opinion about whether I was all happy about that or something, just simply made that statement. Then someone was joking about the Will Smith thing and something about Kid Rock and I said Hillary Clinton should be the one to slap Kid Rock. That was also horribly violent of me. I appealed and they said NO, YOu are VERY BAD, SORRY. What a waste of time. It’s offensive, too. Meanwhile I’ve reported things like people saying vile racist insults and literally saying they want someone to die, and I get the reply that sorry, they reviewed it and the comment was fine. I’m sure the process is even worse now.

zeppo,
@zeppo@lemmy.world avatar

The default “Local/Active” sort algo needs to be tweaked. It makes it look like there are no new posts for days. If you use All with Top Day, Hot or New there’s way more going on.

zeppo,
@zeppo@lemmy.world avatar

They’re not saying they are a “lib” but rather that their account is about criticizing “libs” on TikTok.

zeppo,
@zeppo@lemmy.world avatar

It’s similar to facebook or twitter at this point. You can get suspended for the most silly things, appeal it and they’re “NO we reviewed it and you are VERY bad” and meanwhile, someone can threaten to murder you and you report it, and they’re “we reviewed it and this was perfectly super cool, sorry”.

zeppo,
@zeppo@lemmy.world avatar

it’s fairly horrific, like being banned from amazon. So Amazon is “hey we want a monopoly on all commerce!” … and then if you’re banned by them?

zeppo,
@zeppo@lemmy.world avatar

That’s really the problem: any sort of troll, abusive group or lunatic can access the information by spinning up a federated server.

zeppo,
@zeppo@lemmy.world avatar

It’s an option in reddit settings to make your votes public or not. Of course site admins could always see them if desired, buts that’s a much more limited group than whoever the fuck starts a Lemmy instance.

zeppo,
@zeppo@lemmy.world avatar

It makes me respect billionaires who aren’t insanely juvenile attention whores who try to be the coolest edgy meme lord in the world while pushing shitty politics. Take Spez, basically everyone hates him lately, but at least he doesn’t have a front page post on reddit every day like, “look at me, I’m cool right!?!!” All Musk had to do was shut up and he’d have mass respect.

zeppo,
@zeppo@lemmy.world avatar

I had a Twitter account since 2009 and pretty much never used it. I got on there and got sick of political posts pretty fast in 2015 and gave up again. But then around 2 years ago I discovered some niche communities i liked a lot, basically the same stuff I participated in on reddit, but I was enjoying the Twitter style where accounts have a bit more personality. There’s some good humor too, for instance NY Times Pitchbot is pretty funny. I enjoyed Cory Doctorow’s posts.

I like the anonymity of reddit and lemmy but Twitter is more of a place where people have avatars that are actually their photos, maybe use their real names, post photos of themselves (now that I think of it, no clue why people think that’s okay on twitter and not reddit, that’s just how it is though) and I felt like I got to know people more. Once it was obvious what a pathetic shitshow Musk was going to turn it into, I quit without thinking twice. I miss some of the people and discussions on there, but fuck it, there’s no way.

Reddit, I started in 2008 and have been back and forth with the site since then, at times basically on it half the day. It’s been steadily growing worse, though. Still a prime way to waste time, sometimes slightly useful or productive, but I feel like the value of what I’d read and participate in on there has slipped over time. The ownership/admins kicking up their head and turning out to be giant dickweeds certainly wasn’t cool, obviously. Reddit used to seem like a hip or beneficial company that just stayed out of everyone’s way. So, fuck 'em. I miss some communities on there and I’m sure I’ll not hear about some local events and things about games. It’s not like “ended friendship with reddit! Lemmy is my new best friend!” though. I don’t want to participate in reddit but if I was to say, look at some subs now and then without an account to see what’s up in a town I’m visiting or something, whatever.

Oh sure, wealth seems to make people completely loony and incredibly out of touch. Even having a net worth of $5 million is considered pathetic to some people, and the way they waste their money (and society’s resources that could have helped hundreds or thousands of people) is insane… and then they’re still obsessed with getting more. This is also what fucked over the economy for everyone else.

Splez sucks for sure, I am familiar with how he is a survival prepper and his statement about how he thinks after an apocalypse he would be a ‘leader’, plus he was such a douche to the Apollo developer. Also his vision for reddit is apparently to make it steadily worse, certainly a slap in the face to everyone who has enjoyed how the site used to be. If anything though I appreciate that Splez isn’t out trying to make himself the center of attention the way Musk does, which is really the most objectionable thing about that dude.

zeppo,
@zeppo@lemmy.world avatar

I haven’t since it’s still invite only… I figured if I wanted a Twitter-style thing I’d probably sign up for Mastodon.

zeppo,
@zeppo@lemmy.world avatar

Reddit wasn’t interested in buying any of the 3rd party apps. Since you know, apparently they’re so great at making apps that there were a dozen third party ones that people preferred.

zeppo,
@zeppo@lemmy.world avatar

It’s decidedly not hosted in malaysia. I’m also unclear why that would be a problem though.

zeppo,

What I learned as a glass collector and glassblower is that if you use an item made from a fragile material, it will eventually get broken. The only way to keep such things forever is to put them on a shelf and not use them. If you want to experience it, you must accept that eventually it will be damaged or destroyed.

zeppo,
@zeppo@lemmy.world avatar

I should do that with this one ceramic cow mug I have!
Unfortunately I had this awesome glass cow cup from meow wolf and it's so shattered. People would bring me glass when I was a glassblower, like "can you fix this??" and... well, with glue, I guess, but not my melting it back together, usually.

I made an account on another couple just for the heck of it. Some have different interfaces, or are federated with other servers that this one might not be. Also it’s like a backup - this one could disappear, be down for a couple of days, or decide that only AI photos of lemmings are allowed. Who knows. But yes, it’s not really necessary due to the way Lemmy works.

If you go to the homepage and select All, and perhaps Hot or New, then look at the top line of the posts that show up, you can see the different servers they were posted on originally. Theoretically voting and commenting on those works the same as communities formed on this server. You can see a feed of only communities on here by selecting Local.

One thing I noticed is subscribing to communities on other instances doesn’t seem to work - days later it still says “Pending” and I don’t know if that’s a policy or a technical problem.

zeppo,
@zeppo@lemmy.world avatar

I tried subbing to 2-3 on lemmy.ml and sh.itjust.works a few days ago, and they're still pending... and then I tried another from sh.itjust.works today and it went through right away, so I suspect it was a communication error. Now I wonder, how can we cancel the pending and try it again?

zeppo,
@zeppo@lemmy.world avatar

It was good when it was relatively new. The culture quickly turned toxic, as you're seeing, and it's been getting steadily worse for years now. There is a lot of useful information, and often the only thing online with code examples for a certain programming issue. but it is also increasingly outdated, in part due to the 'no repeat questions' thing. I have a couple popular answers about PHP and JavaScript from over 12 years ago, and they still get upvoted. Some people comment and say "this is answer is incorrect!" and... yeah, it's from 2009.

zeppo,
@zeppo@lemmy.world avatar

huh? what is a reddit? who is a "Spez"?

zeppo,
@zeppo@lemmy.world avatar

Lemmy is a very different conceptually than Voat. A major difference is it's not just a single website, of course, it's open source software that anyone can download and install, which makes it very resilient. The federation aspect is clever too, making it much more than if it was just a bunch of different, disconnected websites running a version of Lemmy.

Voat's goal of being specific to a certain political ideology naturally limited it, too. It doesn't seem that conservative ideology is particularly popular among whatever demographic reddit serves, based on the distribution of subs and comments. Maybe I'm wrong and conservatives just avoid reddit because they view it as a liberal/left site, idk.

Plus, as others have noted Voat was toxic from the start, being composed mainly of people from communities that were kicked off Reddit for breaking rules about hate speech and violence. That's a very shaky foundation, obviously. Lemmy has recently gained tons of users of course, primarily people who ditched reddit because it sucks, not were ditched by reddit for sucking. Huge difference there too.

zeppo,
@zeppo@lemmy.world avatar

I pay attention to individual comments, as feedback from people. The karma total, though, I never think about it at all. I started just deleting my reddit accounts every 2-4 months anyway. Pretty meaningless to me. We could have it on Lemmy or not. I’d be just as interested in all-time word count.
