One thing about this “sugar = diabetes” thing is that people hyper focus on just sugar. Insulin acts on all digestible carbohydrates, not just sugar. Vegetable starch such as rice, corn, wheat or potatoes is just a chain of glucose molecules and is actually turned into blood glucose faster than sucrose. Eating 1 lb of potatoes is exactly the same as eating 1/4 lb of sugar, other than that it comes with some oil too.
Also it sure is annoying having type 1, which has nothing to do with that, and type 2, which does, is 24x as common.
Thanks, but it’s not hyperbole. Vegetable starch is, as noted, only a chain of glucose molecules. It takes 1 chemical step to turn into glucose - breaking the bonds. The only thing faster is pure glucose or maltodextrin. Sucrose is a disaccharide consisting of glucose+fructose. It takes a two-step process. The glucose is absorbed, but fructose takes a much longer pathway through the liver.
There’s a dietary concept called ‘glycemic index’ which ranks foods on how fast they are absorbed into your blood stream. It’s moderated by fat, protein, and fiber content in meals, but still it’s worth looking at the basic food items. I had a hard time finding good charts that listed not only prepared foods but included sugar and starches, but check out this chart for example, or this one. Observe how on both lists, sucrose is in the upper middle, 60ish, while potatoes, corn, rice and wheat are among the highest around 100, second only to glucose and maltodextrin.
Sure, carb intake is only one factor. It’s a very important one though. Obesity and inactivity contribute a great deal, along with genetics. In essence people develop tolerance to insulin because their bodies are flooded with it, in an attempt to metabolize excess carbohydrates. Insulin resistance means the insulin stops working as effectively, resulting in the body putting out more and more, which doesn’t work either, and resulting in chronic hyperglycemia. High body mass means the body has to put out more insulin to maintain a certain blood concentration. Exercise plays a role in glucose utilization, also. Over time, the islet cells get exhausted, too. Type 2 can to some extent be turned around with a low-carb diet and exercise, unlike Type 1.
The fastest would be the glucose tablets or liquid they sell for type 1 diabetics. Honey that is crystallized is very fast too, as the crystals are pure glucose. Some candies like US Smarties are sweetened with glucose. Fruit juice and sucrose are pretty quick, still, but if I’m in a hurry, I eat potato or white rice.
Fat slows down absorption of carbohydrates, so chocolate, and to a lesser extent potato chips, are slower than pure potato or other candies with sugar.
Oh, cool! Like you said, the speed of absorption is a minor distraction from the greater point, which is that all carbs are essentially sugar. Slower absorption does help people with T2, but mainly eating fiber and protein makes more of a difference than the base carb source. This is just what I recall from researching this topic when I got type 1 a few years ago, and my main focus was on the most efficient way to treat low blood glucose.
Whole potatoes have some vitamins and fiber. Brown sugar has some, processed sugar has none. Peeled potatoes have little more nutrition than white sugar, and the same or worse effect on insulin response, which is the key of type 2 diabetes. Mainly what I was pointing out is that something like mashed potatoes is the same as sugar, maybe worse, and that “type 2 diabetes happens from too much sugar” might as well be “type 2 diabetes happens from too much french fries” but the real issue is total carbohydrate intake. In practice, Type 2 issues combine with lifestyle, as in if you’re a marathon runner or body builder, eat as many carbs as you want. If not, watch all carbs.
i have type 1 and have to watch out for and treat oncoming or acute hypoglycemia. If it’s an emergency, like drooling and shivering with glucose of 35, you want the fastest possible, which would be glucose tabs/gel or honey. Pure potato or white rice potato is right up there. For preventative maintenance, if I seem to be dipping, I prefer things like cheetos or corn chips and salsa because it’s more enjoyable. If you were experiencing symptoms of hypoglycemia (which typically would not happen to a regular person without massive aerobic exercise stress or long starvation) you’d want the fastest method possible. I have type 1 so I have a CGM and manual blood monitor, and most people don’t have those insights. Anyway, I take potato chips with me everywhere I go.

I’m sure their infrastructure includes various GOL software, like most tech/ecommerce companies. China is not known for caring much about copyright (or copyleft) and I doubt if they provide much information about that. I’m not sure why you think it would help indicate how much personal information they’re storing from people, and in any event, I think we can assume they at least store the same sort of info about customers and web visitors as sites like Amazon or Google.
“I’m from the government and I’m here to help” is great when they call me back about my medical insurance that otherwise i couldn’t afford at all. Fuck Reagan. Government tickle monster though, no.
Drinking is definitely fucked up. I’ve had problems with that personally, friends and family sure have had their own plus with me. Once it’s really going it’s difficult to do basically anything productive at all.
i don’t want to offend anyone, but some open source/privacy enthusiasts dislike google, but why?? google has made chromium, android, etc and most of the things they do are open source, and not only that, they also support creative commons media or public domain. i know the privacy concernes they may have, but they would never...
Because they are above all else an advertising company. Businesses like having somewhere to advertise, of course… but overall consumers don’t like ads. Chrome, Android and gmail are simply ways to steer people to google search so they can sell ads. Then, like Facebook, their bread and butter is essentially privacy invasion - gathering huge dossiers of personal information on everyone they can. Google also has a reputation for being somewhat arrogant, as far as their work culture (only hiring people from elite universities, and having ridiculous ‘clever’ interview questions) as well as launching products, getting people to depend on them, then cancelling them with little notice or replacement. In addition, while their main product was innovative for the first several years, it’s declined significantly in quality, but their near-monopoly status makes it difficult for anyone else to effectively compete. Another issue is that like Facebook, Google has basically no customer service for anyone not spending 5 million a month with them. If they decide to close down your account based on who-knows-what algorithm thing, unless you get lucky on social media or have good connections, you’re screwed and all your stuff is permanently deleted.
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) — The owner of a Colorado funeral home and his wife were arrested Wednesday in Oklahoma on charges linked to the discovery of 190 sets of decaying remains at one of their facilities, including some that apparently had been languishing there for four years.
Definitely bizarre and horrible. I wonder why they decided to do this - strapped for cash? Just scammers? How did they expect to get away with just storing bodies in a room? So It would be Colorado Springs.
I was wondering what these psychos looked like and found this article:
It’s fulfilling for the Hallfords and Mosley to help people better understand their options and to honor the last wishes of the deceased and their loved ones.
Oh, sure, I bet. A shame as it’s a decent concept to avoid embalming - pumping people full of formaldehyde that eventually leeches into groundwater is a pretty bad idea.
A virus is specifically malware that automatically spreads to other devices. It’s similar to a worm. They tend to spread surreptitiously using vulnerabilities or design flaws. To me that’s quite different than installing a shady browser plugin, and imo it’s better to use the term malware to make it clear privacy violating browser extensions are something people unfortunately choose to install, unlike a virus.
I feel like it would be an interesting learning tool cuz I learn a ton on here and it gets me writing without anyone having to hold a gun to my head. I mean like even essay-length or at least essay-worthy treatments of things I respond to in longer-form, and even for the shorter-form stuff
Sure, it’s just publishing/forum/discussion software. It could be used for a lot of things in an educational context. It could be for lists of assignments, question and answers, suggestion box, discussion or student writing submission that other students could read and comment on.
I’ve used various household tapes like that on food packages and it’s a bad idea, imo, as they end up absorbing some volatile chemicals from the adhesive.
No shit. Groceries have gone up 40% in the past 1-2 years for no real reason while wages have not and things like housing are going up too. Amazing that people would be buying less ‘units’.
Sure, I noticed that part. Inflation is always a scam, built into the monetary system, and while manufacturers/distributors are paying more for their materials and energy also, the rest is price gouging. It’s ‘working’ because people have no choice but to you know, eat food.
Target is not at all primarily a grocery store. They chiefly sell home goods and clothing, which they were known for long before they added the somewhat limited grocery section.
I’m not sure of the changes in their sales categories. You’re right about their overall margins being 3-4%, according to their 2022 financial statement. Here’s how their sales break down by category… about 20% food. I suppose ‘beauty and household essentials’ would be things a grocery store also sells such as cleaning supplies.
I’ve found the prices very much depend on where you shop. A dozen good eggs at my local Albertson’s is $2.50-7.00 depending on how organiccy they are, but I can get 18 at natural Grocers for $5.50 or 24 at Costco for $7.50. Green onions are 2 bundles for $.99 at this Chinese grocery store near me, 89 cents at the local Kroger, or $2.50 at the food coop. A whole chicken at Natural Grocers went from $9.99 to $12.99, but at other stores they’re $15-25 (one is charging $4.99 a lb, which is definitely double what it was a few years ago).
Our rent hasn’t gone up much because it was already ridiculous when my girlfriend signed 3 years ago. Our neighbors who moved in 7 years ago are paying less than 50%.
And yeah, what’s happened with the prices of neccessities is absurd. It’s also absurd that official sources say ‘inflation of 6%! 10%!’. Complete bullshit when we can see prices that went up way more than that.
I went to some hipster restaurant and got a fried chicken sandwich. The piece of chicken was… weird, about the size and shape of a baseball. Perfect in the outside but the inside was kind of wobbly like thick jello. I’m not sure who tf deep fries a 4 inch thick piece of chicken and doesn’t just cut it in two.
Also one time we went to this Mexican restaurant and the beef in the tacos was clearly soft and pink like it had barely been cooked at all. They told us it was their “seasoning” that made it look like that…
I eat hella hot sauce and peppers and… yeah. They’ll do that to you. My mouth is fine with any amount of spice but when it contacts any other part of my body (or I inhale a tiny bit!) I realize holy shit, this stuff is caustic.
Celiac disease. Most people, if they’ve heard of it, believe it’s a physical intolerance to gluten/wheat similar to lactose intolerance. Or, many people think it’s semi-imaginary gluten intolerance and some insist it doesn’t even exist. In fact it is a serious autoimmune disease that affects about every system in your body, and can produce dozens of symptoms ranging from complete debilitation to mild discomfort. Hair loss, dry skin, chronic diarrhea mixed with constipation, anxiety, memory loss, brain fog, insomnia, extreme fatigue, slow growth in children, anemia, osteoporosis, and even more… plus can lead to other autoimmune diseases. Nobody knows what causes Celiac as 30x as many people have the genes as ever develop it, and it can start at any time in life.
type 1 diabetes. Most people have heard diabetes as the 24x as common Type 2 Diabetes, and believe diabetes in general affects overweight people and has something to do with eating “too much sugar”. That’s not quite right for type 2 but it also has nothing at all to do with type 1. T1 used to be called “juvenile diabetes” because it affected people from ages 0-25. However, they changed the name because they found adults could get it, which is what happened to me (called LADA). Type 1 and Type 2 are practically opposite conditions that both affect your glucose regulation and have overlapping effects. Type 2 is where your body puts out so much insulin, it stops responding to insulin, called insulin resistance. It can be reversed to some extent by diet and exercise. Type 1 is an autoimmune condition where your body destroy the cells that produce insulin, leading to no insulin in the body at all, which can quickly be fatal. Unlike type 2, there’s no lifestyle or diet correlation, only genetics.
Good note, that’s another one that’s totally different. Diabetes was originally named for a large flow of urine, which is the connection I guess, but insipidus doesn’t have the connection to high blood glucose. Type 1 and type 2 are Diabetes Mellitus, named for the urine smelling sweet (like honey, ooh!) from the sugar expelled in it. The kind I have is also called Type 1.5, but it’s more like type 1. There’s also an even more rare kind, similar to type 1, called MODY, which is purely genetic.
Yeah, I was about 40 and I had no idea what was happening. I had just been getting better after being finally diagnosed with Celiac. I was really sick and even saw one of the major hospitals in the country for 2 weeks, they didn’t figure out what was going on… then I finally had to go to the ER when I was, they said, 1-2 days away from dying or going into a coma. Definitely caused some problems in between then.
I haven’t seen much T1 action on Lemmy yet, but the communities on reddit are quite good.
Yes, the autoimmune pancreatic deficiency ones should be split off from type 2. Insipidus should just be called something totally different. That’s a recurring conversation on T1 discussion groups. People ask things like “were you really fat as a kid? Did you like, just eat so much sugar you got diabetes?” and no, I was 5’11" and 130 lbs when I was diagnosed.
For the backend? Why? I could see PHP being better for the front end considering it’s basically a templating language already, and setting up Python on a webserver is much more complex, last I tried.
Oh, I see what you mean. I thought you meant output HTML and templating vs server side logic, but yes, obviously I know the difference as the only front-end language is JavaScript and derivatives.
I’m more used to the terms ‘server-side’ and ‘client-side’ btw. Obviously PHP is server-side. But not all server-side is backend in my view. I consider backend to be application logic and things like database access. Templating can be done on the server or the client, and that’s front-end.
