nova_ad_vitum,

The list goes on, it just frustrates me when people scream “racism” and try to shut down any intelligent + nuanced discussion of the tough facts inherent to the case.

That probably happened because you’re the one who brought his race into it and then failed to show how that is relevant.

nova_ad_vitum,

There is never any reason to pre-order a game. Like, ever. It’s always stupid and reinforces terrible incentives that drive the enshittification of gaming. Even when the devs aren’t straight up scammers, preorders mean they can be profitable before they’ve even released anything so they’re incentivized to put out whatever half-baked garbage they can.

nova_ad_vitum,

In the 60s the evangelical christians in the US realized there was a path to essentially coopt the Republican party. This roughly coincided with the implementation of the southern strategy. In the 70s Richard Nixon’s presidency collapsed in the wake of the Watergate scandal. From this point on, efforts were made to ensure that no Republican president could ever be taken down due to, essentially, anything.

This is where the origins of Fox News lie. The whole strategic purpose of it isn’t to deliver news (in fact there’s studies showing that Fox news viewers are less informed than people who don’t watch any news), it’s to offer consistent spin in favour of whatever the Republican mainstream happens to be. Once Trump’s nomination was inevitable , they started supporting him despite their initial opposition.

Fox News is not unique, it’s just the most high profile part of a right-wing media (and “news”) ecosystem designed to ensure that a strong majority of Americans will never see Democrats as anything other than the enemy (despite many Democratic policies being quite popular even among Republicans if not presented with democratic party branding ). There are hundreds of talk radio stations that throughout the 80s and 90s and 2000s spewed nothing but hateful nonsense and poisoned the minds of millions. These people are trained to never expose themselves to media outside of this ecosystem . Anything “woke”, even objective facts, may be dismissed because “media has a left wing bias”.

The recent issues with Russia are just down the fact that it turns out Republicans are a lot cheaper to bribe than most people thought. Putin, a brutal dictator, can be cast as anti-woke, where “woke” ( like "antifa) means whatever they happen to be hating in that moment. Putin hates most of the same groups they’re trained to hate so common Republicans can be talked into supporting Putin’s regime. After all, the alternative is to potentially give the Democrats a win, and that must be avoided at all costs.

I don’t see a way out from this for the US. The media ecosystem doing this has its claws deep into huge swathes of the population and it’s all perfectly legal. There’s no real recourse. In whatever civilization follows us, this will be studied by their historians.

nova_ad_vitum,

Could be that people need to stop being manipulated into living in fear, stop being a slave to their emotions, and accept that risks are part of living, and the only concrete garauntee you ave is that you will for sure die?

Literally just a list of reasons to get vaccinated.

Oh do you know of something to help a person never die, will never ever suffer death?

Do you have really any understanding of the concept of risk? Or is risk just a binary thing to you? Do you not look both ways before crossing the street either? After all you’ll die someday either way.

nova_ad_vitum,

I forgot that detail lol. Let’s take energy weapon technology that can shoot in a perfectly straight line…and artificially limit its range and utility.

nova_ad_vitum,

If employers can merge and negotiate collectively, so can workers. And if you’re unswayed by that argument, remember that their right to free association lets them negotiate collectively regardless of what you think about it.

nova_ad_vitum,

And the asylum escapee that Argentina just elected might actually pick this fight because he doesn’t know how to govern.

nova_ad_vitum,

Bonus points for not easing the edges of the cube at all.

nova_ad_vitum,

A decision that will be validated when 30 million people pre-order the next COD which will also be a buggy mess. And the cycle continues.

People pre-ordering is what creates all the perverse incentives to release buggy unfinished garbage.

nova_ad_vitum,

Interesting, but the scarcity this is trying to manufacture still doesn’t apply to the image itself which can be easily and endlessly copied.

nova_ad_vitum,

The level of the NFT craze was kind of wild though. I remember watching this Hot Ones interview with Mila Kunis where she mentioned “connecting with the audience through NFTs” and “the audience owns the art to the show”.

youtu.be/NAeOzDhL6tc?t=1m55s

At the time I remember thinking that I don’t really understand how that would work in practice or what value NFTs really bring to this situation. I just assumed I didn’t understand. Turns out…nobody did. It’s just a bunch of bullshit.

nova_ad_vitum,

Without phone-number based contact finding signal wouldn’t be relevant enough to matter.

nova_ad_vitum,

Your second paragraph perfectly explains the first. Good self-expression.

nova_ad_vitum,

A scam for whom? My epic library is full of games that they literally gave away for free. I didn’t pay for any of them. Hard to see how I’m being scammed. I’m not surprised that it’s a shitty business model though, and I suppose their investors could argue they’re being scammed.

nova_ad_vitum,

People can and will defend themself without a corrupted government

Even among the other bullshit you just said, this statement is straight up hilarious. There is literally no evidence of this, historical or current. Stop keeping the good drugs to yourself .

nova_ad_vitum,

It is worth remembering incentives though. Apple is primarily a hardware company. Most of their revenue comes from iPhones. Google is primarily an ad company that makes money selling ads, and your data.

This obviously doesn’t make Apple a privacy champion , but it should be considered. Apple is at least theoretically in a position to push for the privacy of their users, while Google is not.

nova_ad_vitum,

All I got from this is that the Galaxy is thiccc af with more C’s than i can use within the bounds of civilized discourse.

nova_ad_vitum,

Isn’t it pretty well known that what we now call the Pythagorean theorem was well known by various older civilizations? Anybody think the builders of the great pyramid didn’t understand that concept in some form?

nova_ad_vitum,

It’s not like they ever had a chance of winning considering their definition of winning is driving the Jews into the sea. Their whole purpose is to fuck shit up and cause maximum damage and this makes sense in that context.

nova_ad_vitum,

Nazis were explicitly Christian lol

nova_ad_vitum,

The best part was that Alex Jones and whoever that other chud was were actually trying to be voices of reason lol.

What is the best linux alternative to OneNote?

I’ve no problem with using LibreOffice for most of my document needs, but i haven’t found a good substitute for microsoft’s OneNote yet. I mainly use it to plan my RPG games and it helps a lot. What alternatives are there for organizing notes on linux, with similar features to those that OneNote provides?

nova_ad_vitum,

I recently settled on Obsidian too. It’s proprietary software, but the text files themselves are in simple markdown and readable in a text editor. Additionally, you can sync across multiple devices using their paid service (which works flawlessly for everything) or set up sync yourself for free if you know how to host a couchdb instance yourself (works perfectly for everything except iOS, apparently).

The plugin support was baked in from the start so it’s extremely flexible.

nova_ad_vitum,

Yes I probably should have implemented that, but the Obsidian plugin implementation (“Self-hosted Live sync”) appears to work almost shockingly well. I was amazed by how easy it was to setup . Setting up a couchdb instance took more time than getting sync going across all my devices, and couchdb wasn’t that hard either.

nova_ad_vitum,

That’s fair, the privacy concerns are not ultimately addressable with a closed-source application. I can encrypt communication and the db itself since I am self-hosting it, but ultimately I’m using the obsidian app on desktop and mobile so I don’t know where the data is going unless I specifically manage it’s network usage etc which is a ton of extra work.

I haven’t actually started taking notes with obsidian yet, I just got it setup. But the plugin support is…massive. IDK.

nova_ad_vitum,

Gotta setup a dart board on the adjacent wall so you can play darts from the pool.

nova_ad_vitum,

You make a strong case. Maybe people should learn…that.

nova_ad_vitum,

I know they’re generally harmless (they eat bugs and won’t bite you if you leave it alone) but they make my skin crawl and I can’t help but kill them with extreme prejudice when I find one.

nova_ad_vitum,

It’s easier to just make bayleaf tea and taste it. This also works to show the contrast between fresh bay leaves and dried, and decent dried bay leaves and super old stuff that’s been sitting at the back of your spice cupboard for 10 years.

nova_ad_vitum,

Also if you don’t like bark then I guess cinnamon is out?

nova_ad_vitum,

Because book Dumbledore is a calm person who is able to control his emotions and he realizes that shouting isn’t going to solve anything?

Gen. Milley says he has "appropriate" safety measures after Trump social media threat (www.cbsnews.com)

Outgoing Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Mark Milley has “appropriate measures” to ensure his safety, he said this week in his first public response to shocking comments made by former President Donald Trump suggesting that the Army general is a traitor who deserves execution....

nova_ad_vitum,

It only takes one guy to be that dumb. Imagine how dumb you have to be to vote for a guy who threatens a general - there are tens of millions of such people.

nova_ad_vitum,

I don’t know about Sunak specifically, but generally the types of people who succeed at politics have way too much unjustified self-confidence to introspect that much.

nova_ad_vitum,

They complain about people accepting the western media narrative while uncritically swallowing whatever Xinhua wants them to believe.

nova_ad_vitum,

If you’re not going to spend 20 hrs on a diy solution that costs 3x what an off-the-shelf solution costs then why even bother .

nova_ad_vitum,

If that phase cloak thing was attached to photon torpedoes it would make them invincible as well since they could phase back beyond enemy shields. Or inside the enemy ship.

nova_ad_vitum,

Lol not since Trump they haven’t.

nova_ad_vitum,

This is mostly true but in politics you constantly deal in partial success . If 5 percent of the audience are swayed to not vote over voting GOP even that is worth it.

nova_ad_vitum,

How is this sub the best on Lemmy lol

nova_ad_vitum,

If you’re incapable of understanding the backdrop of basically all of the franchise, then yeah I guess not.

nova_ad_vitum,

If you’re selfhosting then you should consider Jellyfin. It does all the important stuff Plex does without the ever-increasing bloat as they try to monetize it.

nova_ad_vitum,

People were obviously pissed off at cable’s fragmented model, but what killed it was the existence of video on demand services over the internet. The fact that at a certain point Netflix had everything certainly helped in adoption, but the biggest factor was not having to view at a specific time.

There is no such killer improvement on the horizon. All there is is the fragmented streaming market, or piracy.

nova_ad_vitum,

Even that doesn’t make sense. It’s not like they caught the murderers , unless I missed something. Walking up to someone in a free country and shooting them isn’t that hard, especially with state-level resources.

nova_ad_vitum,

High speed rail in the Montreal to Toronto corridor is a no brainer. Using conventional HSR technology (not 600kmh maglev shit) the time to get from Toronto to Montreal could be brought down to 2 hrs. Anything close to that would eliminate the flights on that route completely, with a much smaller carbon footprint.

nova_ad_vitum,

It’s not the first day that’s a challenge. It’s the 100th day and beyond .

nova_ad_vitum,

They were bad in that they were unscripted. If they hadn’t done them the crews wouldn’t have been paid either.

That said, on Conan there was one of those episodes where his staff are playing guitar hero and Conan walks in there with a real guitar and plays the same song on a real guitar at the same time. I have never seen one activity so thoroughly undermine another.

nova_ad_vitum,

Anybody else remember the now-removed Tesla blog post from 2016 arguing that FSD will require LIDAR? Idk why they’ (Elon) are so stubborn about it. It can see through fog and darkness . Add that data to their model and they would probably already be near deployment readiness of real FSD.
