netchami,

I haven’t logged into my Reddit account since June.

I never used Twitter, so that wasn’t an issue for me.

I just stopped using Discord, if I need to message someone on the internet I suggest Matrix but I almost never use it.

I mostly use Odysee and Nebula to watch videos, if I need to use YouTube I use alternative front-ends like Piped or LibreTube. I tried PeerTube, but there’s just not enough content that I would want to watch.

netchami,

It’s not just the discovery, there’s just not enough quality content.

netchami,

I mean, yeah, that’s true. But I haven’t heard of many big YouTube/Odysee creators uploading their videos on PeerTube or even entirely switching to PeerTube.

netchami,

I admit for the very limited things I do and only occasionally I use Paint.net

Unfortunately, it’s not available on Linux

Still in my mind Gimp is much more powerful?

Yes it is, but it’s also much more complicated. I never fully understood GIMP, I prefer simpler options like Paint.net.

netchami,

Does this exist?? Messaging platform with a panic button from any member.

Basically I am looking for a messaging platform like signal or? but with anonymous signup, perfect forward secrecy, capable of video chat, sending photos the usual uses in today’s life. But with a panic button. So that any party member could use said button to wipe all other members devices of any data instantly inside the...

netchami,

Using Signal with disappearing messages set to a really short time is probably the closest thing you can get. You can use a VOIP number from Cloaked behind a VPN to sign up anonymously.

netchami,

Use Firefox, LibreWolf or Mull with uBlock Origin to bypass this shit.

netchami,

uBlock Origin has built-in bypass mechanisms. No extra userscripts required. Other extensions or scripts might interfere with uBO though. You also need to use Firefox or a Firefox fork like LibreWolf because Chrome soon won’t support MV2 anymore which is required for proper ad-blocking.

netchami,

Ok that sounds interesting, I’m gonna check it out

netchami,

I’ve seen this recommendation a couple of times. In my opinion, the MotionBox UI just looks terrible. I prefer Piped or Invidious for watching YouTube. You can use these in combination with LibRedirect to automatically redirect all YouTube links to these alternative front-ends. FreeTube is pretty good if you need a desktop app. I love LibreTube on Android, NewPipe is another option. There’s also Yattee with this guide on iOS and SmartTubeNext on Android TV.

netchami,

Piped has some issues because Google tries to IP-ban all Piped instances, but Invidious actually pulls the content through the client, not on the server so it should work flawlessly. I also never had any issues with FreeTube.

netchami,

YT also knows FreeTube

But they can’t really do anything about it, unless they start requiring you to log in in order to watch videos…

They sent a cease and desist letter to Invidious, but that’s all they can do. It’s practically impossible to block Invidious because it’s completely decentralized. The Invidious instances only pull metadata, the video stream is actually pulled in by the client.

netchami,

FreeTube doesn’t use the YouTube API. Quote from their website:

FreeTube grabs data by scraping the information it needs (with either local methods or by optionally utilizing the Invidious API).

Neither Invidious, nor Piped, NewPipe or FreeTube use the YouTube API.

NewPipe has a component called NewPipeExtractor which scrapes the data from YouTube.

LibreTube uses Piped which uses the NewPipeExtractor.

Invidious scrapes the data from YouTube.

FreeTube can either scrape the data from YouTube or use Invidious.

Wanted to share the libredirect Firefox plugin, for abandoning Youtube. (libredirect.github.io)

This is a plugin I found recently and really enjoy. It gives you the opportunity to redirect several webpages to alternatives. For example Youtube to FreeTube or Piped. If I search for youtube in Firefox, FreeTube automatically opens and shows me my feed. I like it, I use it, I can recommend it.

netchami,

It’s open-source so you don’t need to worry

netchami,

I use both, LibRedirect and Redirector for things that are not supported in LibRedirect.

netchami,

On Android, I recommend the UntrackMe app. It basically does the same as LibRedirect. You can also use this hack to install desktop extensions like LibRedirect in Firefox Mobile, it requires Fennec Nightly (essentially the Firefox beta version) or Mull (hardened Firefox which is built from Fennec Nightly) though.

netchami,

You can exclude https://youtube.com/ from redirection, that way, the YouTube homepage won’t be redirected, but all videos will be.

netchami,

The entire patent system is deeply flawed. Patents are essentially legal monopolies.

is making the watching experience worse on and Microsoft Edge.

I didn't believe it the first time I heard abt it, since it sounded more like a conspiracy theory than a actual thing, but it's true. Google does add 5s timeout specifically to Firefox and Edge users when they try to watch a video on YT. If you want to know more about it, Mental Outlaw make a very good video abt it (Link: https://youtu.be/v4gXhmzQztE ). I think Google did this, to get people moving to Chrome since the majority will think this is a browser issue, nobody would expect YouTube to purposely doing this. In the attached Screenshot you can see that YouTube checks the user agent of browsers to see if it's Edge, Firefox or not. You can bypass this by changing your User agent to chrome.

Edit: Due a lot of people saying a lot of different things abt it, I want to say that I'm not 100% sure abt how exactly this works, there is a inbuild delay by Google, but who is actually affected, there are a lot of different opinions abt it. I wasn't able to verify this myself in LibreWolf, but this could be the case due my intensive hardening I did and this is just a result of what I found in the code and what Mental Outlaw and others shared across social media, if you got different or additional infos abt this feel free to comment and I suggest everyone ti also check the comment section.

netchami,

Google is a shitty big tech corporation and wants everyone to use their garbage browser that collects and sells all of your data. Thankfully we have great solutions like Invidious and Piped that allow you to watch YouTube content without ever having to visit the ad-infested YouTube website. You can use these in combination with LibRedirect to automatically redirect all YouTube links, it’s awesome. No ads, no delay, no tracking. Just some free and open source software.

Telegram client that removes the Premium "features" shit?

Hello there! I’m currently using telegram FOSS from fdroid, and don’t have telegram premium. It’s okay to have limitations on animated emoji and such, that are limitations imposed by the server, but I really cannot tolerate limitations imposed by the client. I want to rearrange folders. It won’t make me do it without...

netchami,

I’m pretty sure Nekogram removes this shit.

netchami,

You installed the correct app, well, it doesn’t support the premium features then. I’m sorry, I was wrong about that.

netchami,

What init system do you use on your Linux distro?

netchami,

Thunder is great, I love it

netchami,

Or just stop giving these shitty corporations money altogether and start pirating.

Take a look at these amazing guides:

ripped.guide/Audio/Music/

rentry.org/firehawk52

And join !piracy

Personally, I use deemix with Deezer Premium ARLs to download my Music in full 320kbps. Works like a dream. You can accomplish the same thing on Android with Murglar. This section of the Firehawk52 guide explains it pretty well.

netchami,

Media corporations won’t solve that either. They will simply take your money and put it in their pockets while pretending that they care about artists.

netchami,

This is so incredibly annoying when cross-posting something.

netchami,

Why is a debate required for this? Everyone should agree on something like that.

netchami,

Yeah that makes sense

netchami,

@db0 has been pushing out some great stuff recently

netchami,

I highly recommend GrapheneOS on a Google Pixel. You can also get a used one, just make sure to buy a Pixel 6 or newer, as the models don’t get security updates anymore. The Pixel 6 is supported until October 2026 (~3 years). You can check out the entire list of supported devices and the minimum support length on this site. Pixels are a fantastic choice for security because of their Titan M security chip which has support for various Android security features like the Weaver API which throttles unlock attempts making brute-force attack unfeasible, Android StrongBox, and Insider Attack Resistance.

GrapheneOS is really awesome, by default it doesn’t include any Google services making it an excellent choice for privacy. You can install Google Play services, but they will run in a sandbox, you have the ability to restrict what Google has access to on your phone. They also make significant security improvements like hardening the memory allocator, the C library, SELinux policies, etc. What makes GrapheneOS so much better than other ROMs is the fact that you can relock the bootloader and make use of Android Verified Boot with GrapheneOS’ custom signing keys.

You can watch this video or read the official documentation to learn more. My advice: Stay away from insecure ROMs like LineageOS.

netchami,

It doesn’t allow you to lock the bootloader meaning you can’t use Android Verified Boot. There are more security issues with LineageOS, you can read about them on this site

netchami,

Damn, imagine you really need it on Thursday… Get ready to file for bankruptcy.

netchami,

Obviously that was not entirely serious, but in combination with all the other shit that is incredibly expensive nowadays a $700 charge might actually put some people in financial trouble

Palestinian Death Toll in Gaza Tops 13,000 as Israel Repeatedly Strikes U.N. Schools Housing Refugees (www.democracynow.org)

Over the weekend, at least 82 Palestinians were killed in Israeli strikes on Jabaliya refugee camp, including multiple United Nations schools sheltering Palestinians. At least 85 incidents of Israeli bombing have impacted 67 facilities run by the United Nations relief agency for Palestine refugees (UNRWA) in the last two months....

netchami,

Disgusting. Israel This “war” needs to end this genocide.

netchami,

Absolutely true

netchami,

Obviously it’s intentional, it’s Google, what do you expect from this piece of shit Big Tech corporation? Don’t be evil has already belonged to the past for a long time.

netchami,

That is not their official website btw. The maintainer of uBO has stated that he doesn’t want a website

He doesn’t want a forum or a website, thus he won’t have any costs and he won’t have to accept donations meaning he doesn’t have to deal with the administrative workload and that way he has more time to develop uBlock Origin.

Source: github.com/…/Why-don't-you-accept-donations%3F

netchami,

These are all better ways to access YouTube, they don’t host any videos themselves. If you want a YouTube alternative, check out PeerTube

netchami,

UntrackMe is nice, but it’s not required for YouTube link redirection on Android as LibreTube and NewPipe natively support opening YouTube links.

netchami,

That’s true and that’s the reason I use UntrackMe.

Decent YouTube client?

I’m looking for an app to browse YouTube using multiple accounts. It has to be convenient to switch between multiple accounts, and keep them separate. I’ve struggled to find a YT client that does this well, most of them seem to advertise “Use YouTube without an account”. I’d look on the app store but frankly the play...

netchami,

Personally, I really enjoy LibreTube (Website, F-Droid link, GitHub). It is great for privacy as it proxies all traffic to YouTube through a Piped instance meaning you don’t have to connect to YouTube servers and your identity won’t be exposed to Google.

NewPipe (Website, F-Droid link, GitHub) is another good option, but it makes direct requests to YouTube. There are also forks of NewPipe like NewPipe x SponsorBlock (IzzyOnDroid link) which just adds a SponsorBlock integration and there is BraveNewPipe which has support for more video streaming plattforms.

Clipious (F-Droid, GitHub) is a pretty new app that uses the Invidious API to privately pull content from YouTube. I haven’t tried it out though.
