netchami,

Use Piped or Invidious, it also bypasses ads and tracking. It works best in combination with LibRedirect, which you can configure to automatically redirect all YouTube links to Piped or Invidious.

netchami, (edited )

This reminds me of Elon Musk when he started artificially slowing down links to websites he doesn’t like… washingtonpost.com/…/twitter-x-links-delayed/

netchami,

You can exclude youtube.com in the LibRedirect settings. For some reason that doesn’t seem to work though, but you can always click on the LibRedirect icon in the extension toolbar and hit ‘Redirect to Original’. You can also set up a keybinding for that.

netchami,

First thing that comes to mind is user agent spoofer.

If we all go ahead and spoof our user agents to Chrome, Google will say ‘No one uses Firefox’. Use better solutions like Invidious and Piped in combination wit LibRedirect instead.

netchami,

LibreTube is another option for Android. On iOS you can use Yattee with this guide.

Invidious and Piped work in the browser, you can combine them with LibRedirect to automatically redirect all YouTube links. LibRedirect is great, you can also use it to redirect other websites, e.g. Twitter -> Nitter, Reddit -> Teddit, etc.

netchami,

I’m glad you like Piped and LibRedirect.

Btw, check out this guide to bypass any website block. It utilizes Cloudflare to create a proxy, it works really well, I love this solution.

netchami,

Pi-Hole can’t block YouTube ads. Use LibreWolf with uBlock Origin, it works like a dream. Or try alternative frontends for YouTube like Invidious or Piped. These are even better when combined with LibRedirect, it automatically redirects all YouTube links to your preferred alternative frontend.

netchami,

YouTube doesn’t actually throttle the video stream on the server, they just use some JavaScript on their official website that adds delay to the playback when Firefox is detected. The Invidious client directly connects to Google servers for video streaming, but it just displays the raw video stream without any ads, artificial delay or any crap like that.

netchami,

Every single word that comes out of Elon’s mouth is a big fat fucking lie. I don’t understand how people can still trust that guy with anything.

netchami,

Because I use Vim Keybindings in LibreWolf through Tridactyl, I actually can’t use j, k and l for -10s, play/pause and +10s lol

netchami,

If the alternatives don’t use a Firefox user-agent, it’ll also have the same effect in reducing the amount of Firefox traffic in their logs.

When you stream a video from Google servers through the Invidious frontend and you use Firefox, the user-agent that gets reported to googlevideo.com (the domain that the requests for YouTube video streams are sent to) is Firefox. You can easily verify that yourself, go to an Invidious instance using Firefox, make sure to disable ‘Proxy videos’ in the Invidious settings, open the Developer Tools, go the Network tab and load a video. Click on any request to *.googlevideo.com and look at the user-agent, you can see, it’s a Firefox user-agent. This thread explains how the slowdown is introduced in YouTube JavaScript: https://feddit.it/pictrs/image/0e13c670-4966-4073-89df-f042fe9cc6de.webp

Using Invidious avoids this.

netchami,

I use spacebar for play/pause and the arrow keys for +5 and -5 seconds. It’s not perfect, but I haven’t found a better solution yet.

netchami,

I use Piped or Invidious most of the time, the keybindings work there. They seem to be broken on the official YouTube website though.

netchami,

NewPipe is an Android app that allows you to watch YouTube videos without ads or tracking. It exposes your IP to Google servers though. Piped consists of a web client and a backend server, it uses the NewPipeExtractor on the server to load the video as well as all the metadata from Google servers and then serves it to you through the web client. That way, you don’t have to connect to Google, only the Piped server communicates with YouTube servers.

netchami,

Invidious and Piped fix this issue. You can use LibRedirect to automatically redirect all YouTube links to Invidious or Piped.

netchami,

FreeTube is great but I personally prefer a browser-based solution

netchami,

By default, when using Invidious, your browser loads the video right from Google, you can proxy videos through the Invidious instance but it’s disabled by default. Only Piped always proxies videos through the Piped server.

netchami,

Stop giving Google money. Use Invidious, Piped or FreeTube on Desktop, LibreTube or NewPipe on Android, Yattee with this guide on iPhone, iPad or Apple TV.

netchami,

I’ve never heard of that one, I’ll try it out

netchami,

Use Invidious or Piped in combination with LibRedirect in order to automatically redirect all YouTube links to Invidious or Piped.

netchami,

Use LibreWolf, it’s essentially Firefox on steroids. It removes all the bloat like Pocket or Sponsored sites, it adds significant privacy benefits and comes with uBlock Origin preinstalled.

netchami,

That’s why we need to switch away from this proprietary garbage and use Firefox or LibreWolf (Firefox on steroids with less bloat, improved privacy and even pre-installed uBlock Origin)

netchami,

Yes, I use it on Hyprland and it works perfectly.

Hate crime charge dropped against Calgary man who led, “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free,” chant (www.theprogressreport.ca)

Faisal Bhabha, an associate professor of law at Osgoode Hall Law School at York University in Toronto, said Cooley “should be seriously considering a civil action for malicious prosecution and unlawful detention by the police.”...

netchami,

It’s sad that we live in a world where such harmless statements will get you charged with hate crime. Those who try to silence the opinions they don’t like are the ones truly committing hate crime.

netchami,

Stopping the oppression of Palestinian people doesn’t have to mean the dissolution of Israel, the Israeli government could also just stop the oppression in the first place.

netchami,

The title of the article actually summarizes it pretty well

The fact that this nation state uses its intelligence agencies to spy on college students in foreign countries is already enough of a reason to never show any respect for it

Fuck Israel

Next smartphone I buy, which one do you recommend?

Things that make me angry about my current smartphone Samsung Galaxy S21Ultra on a Verizon plan is the mandatory software updates in which they install WITHOUT MY PERMISSION stupid apps like Netflix and addictive gambling games and stacking block games and Candy crush. God knows what else they install without my permission. I...

netchami,

A Google Pixel running GrapheneOS is your best option. Graphene doesn’t have any Google services by default, no bloatware at all, maximum privacy and security. It’s super easy to install, you can check out this video guide or just read their official documentation.

Another video about GrapheneOS that I totally recommend: youtube.com/watch?v=yTeAFoQnQPo

I recommend this after the install: youtube.com/watch?v=BymH90zFe30

netchami,

I wouldn’t recommend a Pixel older than the Pixel 6 as these will soon be EOL.

netchami,

GrapheneOS significantly increases security, rooting does the exact opposite

netchami,

For security reasons GrapheneOS doesn’t allow the modification of system files. You can achieve the same thing with DNS though. Either self-host a Pi-Hole or AdGuard Home, or use something like NextDNS.

netchami,

GrapheneOS is built to work with a locked bootloader, in fact, relocking the bootloader is a step in the installation guide. It’s not rooted by default and the GOS team highly recommends against rooting, all apps should work as long as they only require SafetyNet basic integrity. If they require full integrity, they won’t work on GrapheneOS because the OS has to be manually whitelisted by Google in order to pass the full integrity check. Most apps (including banking or government apps) only mandate basic integrity though, full integrity is rarely required. It should definitely work better than LineageOS.

netchami,

Yeah, that’s because your phone is rooted. By default you can’t get root on GrapheneOS so it should work there.

netchami,

I was sure that something like this would happen, but I’m really impressed by how quickly it happened.

netchami,

Affinity Designer is an Illustrator alternative, Affinity Photo is their Photoshop competitor and Affinity Publisher is an InDesign clone. The company that makes the Affinity products is called Serif. Hope this helps to clarify.

netchami,

Google CEO Pichai can go fuck himself.

Fuck you Pichai, fuck you Google, fuck you Big Tech. I’m not doing what you are telling me, I’m not using your crappy proprietary services that are built to spy on everyone, I’m not watching your shitty advertisements, I’m definitely not giving you any of my data. I hope your piece of shit company goes bankrupt and you end up on the street, that’s where you belong to. I’m not a slave of your totalitarian system, I’m free to choose where I download my software and what software I want to run on my devices. I do everything to avoid your surveillance capitalism, I use FLOSS software wherever I can. Your business model is a piece of trash, it will inevitably fail at some point. I am sure that you will try to do everything to mislead the public and to get them to believe your lies, but not everyone is as stupid as you would like them to be.

netchami,

Google Chrome isn’t on the Microsoft Store on Windows or macOS Store on macOS. Should I stop “sideloading” it according to his advice?

Yes, actually no one on this planet should be using Chrome or any proprietary browser when superior FLOSS alternatives like Firefox and LibreWolf exist.

netchami,

That is great advice.

netchami,

It’s kinda funny to watch two garbage corporations fighting each other

netchami,

As long as an advertising company that spies on everyone owns and controls the Play Store, it will always be a complete and utter piece of garbage

netchami,

He obviously wants people to use his crappy centralized proprietary store that collects all of your information instead of a superior FLOSS platform

netchami,

Also check out LibreTube

netchami,

Use GrapheneOS, it’s a completely independent non-profit mobile security research project that has probably created the most secure mobile operating system out there. GrapheneOS doesn’t use any Google services by default, and it makes fundamental security improvements to the entire Android operating system stack. It also doesn’t have an official app store that comes with system privileges, so technically every app installation on GrapheneOS is ‘sideloading’. In my opinion, it’s by far the best option for a mobile OS.

netchami,

What he really means is “we want to take your freedom away and lock you into our proprietary ecosystem so we can mine all of your data and extract as much profit from you as possible”

That’s why you should use GrapheneOS

netchami,

They want you to give up your freedom

netchami,

Based

netchami,

That’s the only right option

netchami,

Don’t even get me started on the flaws with Apple, their walled garden and the App Store

It’s the reason I left the Apple ecosystem and switched to a far superior operating system that actually respects the user and gives them freedom over their devices. GrapheneOS is awesome!
