maporita,

We also have intersections with dedicated pedestrian green light. All cars stop and pedestrians can cross any direction. Allowing cars to enter a busy intersection when pedestriana are in it is insane, especially if the driver has to look one way for vehicles and the opposite way for people.

maporita,

The Palestinians have been using violence for over half a century and achieved nothing. Regardless of the morality of armed struggle and the desire for revenge, it is in fact counter productive. Apartheid in South Africa didn’t end because of military action, it ended because the ANC was able to mobilise world opinion against the white regime. It ended because of sanctions and isolation and making the nation a pariah. If the Palestinians had chosen that course of action early on I think we’d be in a much better place today. All these attacks do is harden world opinion against them.

maporita,

You could start by asking the ANC. They were able to do exactly that by mobilizing public opinion in the US and othe countries. They were phenomenaly successful to the point where no politician in the US or UK could continue to support the apartheid regime.

As it is now, after this attack, support for a Palestinian homeland will hit rock bottom. The only person who benefits from this is Netanyahu. Think about that for a minute.

maporita,

Agree fully with your first statement.

Do you have any links to support your second statement?

maporita,

And God help you of you ever try to browse the site using an older, low resolution monitor. It borders on being unusable.

maporita,

Cue the outrage. Meanwhile no-one questions why people feel compelled to sell their own organs in order to survive. This is just a logical and expected outcome of a system where some give their own blood so that others can live better.

maporita,

The majority of sexual abuse is by people known to the victim and much of it goes unreported.

maporita,

Great strawman but no, this is not free speech, this is illegal content and laws exist to prosecute those who disseminate it. Free speech allows you to offend others … it doesn’t give you a pass to break the law.

maporita,

Your analysis is like someone looking at a Jackson Pollock painting and commenting that the artist is nostalgic for a period when slavery was legal. In other words complete bullshit.

maporita,

The problem is that this solves nothing. Since COVID the US has been writing checks it cannot cash and the party will come to an end sooner or later. The longer we kick the can down the road the more painful it will be. Republicans won’t increase taxes (even Biden didn’t roll back Trump’s tax cuts). And Democrats won’t cut entitlement spending. So we are essentially screwed.

maporita,

GPS jamming is trivial. This is spoof which is a lot more complex and requires sophisticated kit. I imagine there is Russian involvement here.

maporita,

Many other countries have liberal immigration policies and haven’t experienced these problems. Something seems to have gone uniquely wrong in Sweden. Gang membership in Sweden is comprised overwhelmingly of people from a handful of countries: Syria, Serbia, Bosnia, Albania and Iraq. Most immigrants to Sweden come from India for example, and don’t seem to cause problems. Nor do those from Poland or the UK.

It looks like a massive failure to vet individuals from a few nations … possibly out of a misplaced sensitivity to appearing racist.

maporita,

That’s pretty much all this cartoon ever is … just states some obvious fact about office life involving stupid demanding bosses.

maporita,

Because that’s worked so well for them in the past. /s

The double-edged sword of privatisation is poised to cut deep into the heart of a failing South African state (www.dailymaverick.co.za)

An interesting assesment of how a failing state almost makes privatisation inevitable. But at the cost of not servicing the majority of the country’s population, and only catering to those who can pay for all services. Pay to win in reality.

maporita,

Not only Mandela. All the top cadre of the ANC and SA Communist party in those days were great. Govan Mbeki (Thabos’ father). Walter Sisulu. Chris Hani (murdered by the apartheid regime). Steve Biko (hopefully everyone knows who Steve Biko was). Joe Slovo (his wife, Ruth First, was also murdered by the regime). These were all good, honest and decent people, not to mention brave and courageous. It’s a tragedy and a disgrace to see how the next generation of leaders has trashed the legacy of these amazing people.

maporita,

I remember a case where a mother killed her two young kids because she wanted them to go to heaven. Her reasoning was that if they grew up and became sinners they would end up in hell. By murdering them before they knew what sin was she actually saved them. Thing is, if you believe in that shit then what she did really makes perfect sense.

Why Do Companies Not Use Existing 2FA Standards?

This is something I am seeing more and more of. As companies start to either offer or require 2FA for accounts, they don’t follow the common standards or even offer any sort of options. One thing that drives me nuts is when they don’t offer TOTP as an option. It seems like many companies either use text messages to send a...

maporita,

I can’t answer your question but it’s particularly annoying for me because I travel a lot for work. Sending me an SMS message when I’m in the middle of Africa isn’t going to work. (In fact I found a way to make it work by enabling wifi calling with my US cell provider… but I shouldn’t have to jump through hoops to verify my identity)

maporita,

Not of it’s just a quick rinse in cold water. Many people in Latin America take a shower multiple times a day but it’s not what people in the US would call a shower. It’s quick and often doesn’t involve soap. I shower at least twice a day but only one of those is a real “shower” shower with soap.

Beehaw.org admin removes comments he doesn't like (lemmy.zip)

Today I learnt that at beehaw.org you don’t really have to break any instance/community rules to have your comments removed by the admin. In their wiki page they wrote over the top, corporate-sounding articles about how “Beehaw aspires to be a diverse place” where “everyone plays an important role in that mission”, how...

maporita,

Try unilem. They have a policy of not defederating from other servers and as long as it’s legal it’s good to go. In other words they treat you like an adult who can decide for yourself what you want to see and read online.

maporita,

In areas with lots of people it’s also about efficiency. Single stall toilets don’t work at a train station. A better option is to have two toilets … one with urinal and one without. Use whichever one you want.

maporita,

After moving from the US to Europe there is something magical about walking around the city and town centers here. Not just the tourist traps like Rome and Paris but smaller towns and villages with tiny narrow streets lined with shops and restaurants and people walking around. So much better than the souless shells our downtowns have become in the US.

maporita,

Liberalism is the founding basis of modern Western democracy. So not quite the same as an obscure fact about a species of tree.

maporita,

We don’t have all the answers yet but we’re making progress in finding them.

All the evidence so far seems to indicate that consciousness is a purely physical phenomenon … despite the fact that it may not seem so to us

maporita,

Gmail’s UI is awful unless you are coming from the Outlook webmail client … then it’s freaking amazing.

maporita,

“inciting a riot” means, at the very least, telling people to go and riot. Burning a book is not, by any stretch of the definition “inciting a riot” (even though it may result in some people rioting).

maporita,

It might fit a loose definition but it doesn’t fit the legal definition (speaking about the US here). These requirements are known as the Brandenburg test. (Brandenburg v. Ohio, 395 U.S. 444 (1969).)

“First, incitement to violence requires proof that the defendant intended to incite violence or riot (whether or not it actually occurs). Careless conduct or “emotionally charged rhetoric” does not meet this standard. Second, the defendant must create a sort of roadmap for immediate harm—using general or vague references to some future act doesn’t qualify as imminent lawless action. Finally, the defendant’s words must be likely to persuade, provoke, or urge a crowd to violence. Profanity or offensive messaging alone isn’t enough; the messaging must appeal to actions that lead to imminent violence”.
.

maporita,

If you enable wifi calling before you leave then you can leave your Rogers esim active and use your local sim for data and calls. The advantage is that you still receive sms messages on your Canadian number.

maporita,

It’s the internet… we should question everything. That’s not to say this is false or that racists don’t exist. Just that being skeptical should be the default position.

maporita,

If a plurality of Catalonians want to separate then let them. This principal should apply to all peoples, from Scotland to Quebec to Taiwan to Hong Kong. As part of the western alliance of liberal democracies Spain should follow the paths set by Britain and Canada and hold a referendum. Not doing so puts them in the same club as China.

maporita,

Agreed. A majority of Puerto Ricenses would prefer statehood… and they should receive it.

maporita,

You mean changing the constitution? That’s pretty much impossible for Catalonians given that the rest of Spain doesn’t want secession. Incidentally that particular clause of the constitution dates back to Franco… so Spain is using a fascist construct to deny a people the right to self government.

maporita,

Why should anyone else have any say in Catalonias’ decision to secede? It should be up to Catalonians only. By your logic the US would never have gained independence.

Canada (a liberal democracy) allowed Quebequois to decide for themselves whether to separate. The UK (another liberal democracy) did the same for the Scots. On the other hand China (an autocratic dictatorship) would never consider the same for Hong Kong. So you see in which camp your logic lies.

maporita,

They’re called kilts and they’ve been popular for ages in Scotland

maporita,

I thought Ramzan Kadyrov was the Chechen leader

maporita,

Unilem has a specific policy of not blocking users or posts. Basically unless it’s illegal it’s good to go. I prefer to be treated like an adult and allowed to decide for myself what I want to see online.

maporita,

My wife owns a small business and I work for her. I get all kinds of perks including being able to sleep with the boss.

maporita,

This is what bugs me more than anything. They “know” my bag didn’t make the flight but instead of sending me a message (to the email / phone number I already gave them) they make me wait two hours on the ground after a one hour flight.

maporita,

We know that a child ate a corn chip and the child later died. We don’t know that the child died as a result of eating the corn chip. If we believe that policy should be based on evidence and not on anecdote it seems reasonable to wait for an investigation before we apportion culpability.

maporita,

If they tell me it’s close to zero © then I know it’s time to change from shorts to pants. If it’s close to zero F and you’re still in shorts then you’re probably dead.

maporita,

But it is optional … why not just turn it off?

How do I tame my frustration toward my aging parents?

My parents are 57 and 63. My mother is erratic, forgetful, and when she gets mad she sometimes screams and throws things. My father is slowly going deaf, getting slower and more stubborn and forgetful as well. They can be infuriating sometimes, but I know that they’re aging and I can’t be mad at them. How do I deal with...

maporita,

My wife was horrified to learn that we put our parents in a home when they get old. She’s from Colombia and such a thing would be unthinkable.

Having said that I would never want my children to look after me. It’s not fair on them… they have their own lives to lead.

maporita,

A previous owner of my apartment had for some reason installed a high security door. It’s 5 inches thick with steel plates inside and has 3 separate sets of 3 locking rods like a bank vault. Not sure what line of work they were in but, really, good luck to the person who thinks they can break in here easily. Downside is there is no way to put a digital lock on the sucker.

maporita,

Said by someone who has never lived under occupation.

maporita,

Yes of it’s visible. Religious symbols are allowed to be worn if they are not visible.

maporita,

Then they should move elsewhere. When you immigrate to a country it’s on you to conform. I as a gay man would never consider moving to a Muslim country where my lifestyle is rejected. If otters feel their values don’t align with secularism then don’t come here.

Ukraine expands conscription, removes medical exemptions for HIV, hepatitis, mental disorders and more (archive.ph)

Now, the words and figures “with the exception of articles 2-c, 4-c, 5-c, 12-c, 13-c, 14-c, 17-c, 21-c and 22-c” have been removed from the Regulation, i.e. everyone will be recognised as fit under the “controversial” articles:...

maporita,

Ukraine was invaded by a tyrant. The people have suffered for over a year, children have been slaughtered or lost limbs, civilians entombed in rubble, and the armed forces have lost tens, perhaps hundreds of thousands defending their homeland.

Now I’m not a violent man but I have to admit, in the face of all these poor people have suffered, reading your glib comment does make me feel like punching something.

maporita,

“Orwellian” is a term that gets thrown around a lot these days so one hesitates to use it, but when a country invades another sovereign state and then turns round and claims they didn’t start the war it really does sound like something the ministry of truth would say. To be clear. America started the war in Iraq (incidentally I marched in the street in protest). Russia started the war in Ukraine.

maporita,

We can debate questions of historical sovereignty all night … it will never end. But do you think the majority of Ukrainians would prefer to be part of Russia? If so you are either lying or you live on a different planet. Like the Poles, the Romanians, the Lithuanians, the Czechs, in fact anyone who has lived under the Soviet / Russian boot, Ukrainians for the most part detest and despise Russia (with good reason). The most ardent anti-Russians are the ones who used to be ruled by them.
