kylian0087,

While on one hand Manjaro is very polished. Some things they do is questionable. Like the time they suggested to change your date and time because they let their repo keys expire. Or accidentally DDOS the AUR. Just to name some. The Manjaro team has a rather bad track record of these things.

kylian0087,

Their are not many other good foss calendar apps that I know off

kylian0087,

Opensuse Tumbleweed. A rock solid rolling release.

kylian0087,

In my case not at all. But that is by choice. I always start from a server install. For me i like rolling as i do not get major version updates. And with tumbleweed it is very solid at the same time. Snapper and btrfs are also great aditions.

kylian0087,

Never hat issues on my 10+ year old system. I did how ever with rocky linux 9.4. It is unsupported on my old dell r610s

Tip for when you need to use the power button and do a force shutdown. Try the following first Alt+SysRq r>e>i>s>u>b

blog.kember.net/…/2008-04-reisub-the-gentle-linux…

kylian0087,

It is? I never noticed it being disabled honestly.

kylian0087,

Those are exactly the ones i never noticed sysrq being disabled. I use the resisub quite often on tumblweed. and used to on arch.

kylian0087,

Spytify and a VM. Let it run and rip to a network share.

kylian0087,

Honnestly. Firewalls shut be enabled by default. Specially on laptops connecting to public places.

A good default shut be choosen by the disteo maintainer. A default shut not overwrite your own config. Like any config really. So no upset folks that like to change the firewall. Also if you dont block much outgoing trafic you are not likely to run into problems. And for people that like to poke holes in the incoming trafic. Your a “advanced” user anyway.

kylian0087,

Their are not many programs that require open ports for incoming trafic. Things like ssh or a web server do. But then again those are services you would manualy want to open anyway.

kylian0087,

Personaly i like to use borg.

kylian0087,

When the time comes that YouTube wins. It is also the time they loose. Personally i wouldnt use Youtube at all without adblock.

kylian0087,

What is the bennefit of vorta? Personally i have always used borg directly.

Disney is gouging customers with a near doubling of subscription costs. (sh.itjust.works)

Disney is raking its customers over the coals with a 75% price hike for their annual subscription (originally $80.) People wonder why piracy is on the rise.Multiple commenters are saying I’m off base about the 75% price increase. My payment less than a year ago was $79.99. Here’s the proof.

kylian0087,

Jellyfin+Sonarr+Radarr+Prowlarr+qbitt (And working and testing it with I2P)

kylian0087,

You are able to force devices to use a specified DNS. even when they have hard coded DNS in them. Your router/firewall must be able to support redirection of network traffic though.

kylian0087,

As far as I know you can factory reset the device from the boot menu. So no login is required.

kylian0087,

What makes rust so resiliant against these types of atacks?

kylian0087,

You know tor is still a thing? It is also used to bypass the “great” firewall of china.

kylian0087,

Requiring a VPN is false see support.torproject.org/…/connecting-from-china/Their are a few ways to bypass the firewall from tor it self. the easiest is to use snowflake.

kylian0087,

exactly. I have not pirated games in a long time because steam is at that perfect balance for me. With a few exceptions of course

kylian0087,

Wait a seccond… good catch!

kylian0087,

What is wrong with YAML for configuration? It is much more easy to read then say json.

kylian0087,

In the basis you are right. But nowadays a good large USB stick shut be able to handle it fine over a long period. I would recommend to put the cache and temp directory’s on a memory drive. that way you do not constantly stress out the USB.

On the other hand nowadays their are USB cases for M.2 SSDs. this would eliminate the entire problem.

kylian0087,

Dont use thingiverse. it is a dying unmaintained platform.

kylian0087,

Out of curiousity. Why get a M1 or mac for that matter. In the first place?

kylian0087,

Although most of the times while vim is not installed vi is. Even often together with nano.

kylian0087,

I assume you do not use the AUR much then? Personally i tried Manjaro in the beginning and broke it in less then 2 months. Hat a ton of dependencies conflicts due to using AUR packages. installed arch and everything was fine. Now using tumbleweed just to switch things up a bit.

kylian0087,

Honestly this is a bit extreme in my opinion. I have been printing ABS for some years now. It is what i print in the most in fact. I am using a prusa MK3 (now S) without a enclosure. and it works just fine even rather large prints. Only thing to keep in mind is the fumes. In my case the printer is in a separate room which is well ventilated.

kylian0087,

In my case i do not use any sort of glue. I just print straight on the texured or PEI sheet. Never really hat issues. If it does not stick welll, I clean it with dishsoap. Seems to work best after a wile of use.

Why do I have to re-download kernel packages everytime?

Hey, I am using Fedora Linux 38 with the 6.4.13 kernel. I have had this problem for quite a while now. Everytime I run sudo dnf upgrade and there’ an update to the kernel, dnf downloads the kernel and related packages (kernel-modules, kernel-modules-extra etc.) but cites a md5 mismatch and then re-downloads it. This time it...

What do you use to manage operating system images for installation on new laptops and workstations?

I’m wanting to create a centralized repository to keep base images of operating systems to be installed on new laptops or workstations bought/used in my household with my local CA already installed, configured to authenticate with my local FreeIPA instance, network configurations already configured, etc....

kylian0087,

seems likea FOG server: fogproject.org is what you need.

A awesome project and greatly simplifies the PXE boot process. You have a repo of images you have setup ready to go and be installed.

kylian0087,

Although I agree with most of the things. Saying “they are all the same” is very wrong imo. Very similar sure the same? no. Personally I like Tumblweed more because I love to tinker and break things once in a while. so snapper and btrfs are great in this case. Mint i would use on a set and forget system. Like for my parents.

Saying Arch,OpenSuse,Fedora,Debian and Gentoo are all the same for example is saying that your Toyata Prius is the same as a bugatti chiron. Sure they are both cars and “just look and feel is different” they are not the same at all.

kylian0087,

Redhat does this as well a loaf. And even when logged in. A ton of awnsers you need a active subscription for.

kylian0087,

For package management i would also give a brief explenation about repositorys.

kylian0087,

I still like firefox. I configure it using a json file. Just load that file and the browser is configured for all users on the system.

kylian0087,

No problem. My comment was more to add some info. Perhaps i formulated it a bit odd.

3d modelling and slicing software for Linux

Hi y’all! This may be a stupid question, but here it goes anyways: I’m thinking of trying to install Linux on a laptop that’s getting slow because of a bloated Windows install. I basically only use it for some internet browsing and 3D modelling (Fusion360) and slicing for my 3D printer (Cura). Is such software available...

kylian0087,

Might be worth checking out blender. You can do some pressision modeling in it. It is what I like to use because it is extremely versitile.

For the slicer i use superslicer/prusa slicer.

kylian0087,

To add to this. You can use a tool like rsync for this. rsync -aAxv /home/username /destination/

This will copy over youthome folder to rhe destination (network share,USB,External drive etc)

Then reinstalland and do it in reverse.

kylian0087,

Honestly what a shit job you must have when working with that stuff. it is sad and a difficult thing.

kylian0087,

This is exactly what I did. I hat a poco X3 NFC. I did install lineageOS on it which was a absolute pain due to MIUI and their unlocking method. A few weeks ago it flung off the motorcycle on the highway in Germany. got my self a google pixel and instantly installed GOS on it. and i am loving it it works great is secure and privacy focused. i do not miss any google services at all.

What is your unbiased opinion on Manjaro?

I am a Linux noobie and have only used Mint for around six months now. While I have definitely learned a lot, I don’t have the time to always be doing crazy power user stuff and just want something that works out of the box. While I love Mint, I want to try out other decently easy to use distros as well, specifically not based...

kylian0087,

I think Manjaro is a bit of a mixed bag. A good distro in it self but their are issues. Arch is great and a big part of it is due to the AUR. When using the AUR you can easily get dependentie conflics if you use it on Manjaro.

Also some sloppy things from the devs. From adding broken patches (some driver thing). To exidentely ddosing the AUR.

kylian0087,

Exactly. If it is the rolling nature op does actualy like perhaps opensuse tumblweed is a good one to try?

kylian0087,

I have used linux in the server era for around 8 years noe. On the desktop for about 5. I did use arch before i settled on opensuse.
