Lemmyshitpost community closed until further notice

Hello everyone,

We unfortunately have to close the !lemmyshitpost community for the time being. We have been fighting the CSAM (Child Sexual Assault Material) posts all day but there is nothing we can do because they will just post from another instance since we changed our registration policy.

We keep working on a solution, we have a few things in the works but that won’t help us now.

Thank you for your understanding and apologies to our users, moderators and admins of other instances who had to deal with this.

Edit: @Striker the moderator of the affected community made a post apologizing for what happened. But this could not be stopped even with 10 moderators. And if it wasn’t his community it would have been another one. And it is clear this could happen on any instance.

But we will not give up. We are lucky to have a very dedicated team and we can hopefully make an announcement about what’s next very soon.

Edit 2: removed that bit about the moderator tools. That came out a bit harsher than how we meant it. It’s been a long day and having to deal with this kind of stuff got some of us a bit salty to say the least. Remember we also had to deal with people posting scat not too long ago so this isn’t the first time we felt helpless. Anyway, I hope we can announce something more positive soon.

firediviner,

Can you please stop pinning threads globally? or maybe add toggle so people could disable it in their feed

MrWafflesNBacon,

Yeah same here, I’m fine if it’s pinned for just a day then unpinned globally afterwards through.

zzpza,

I’m sorry you (and the other admins & mods of the community) have to deal with this shit, it’s disgusting. Thank you for doing what you do.

As someone who was a moderator on a nothorious website, it can at times feel like shoveling water out of a boat while it’s still leaking. Efficient and robust tooling makes a very big difference, but it’s not waterproof. Mods cannot be appreciated enough.

UnD3Rgr0uNDCL0wN,

BTW search doesnt work on here. Cant actually get it to open different comminities.

Roflmasterbigpimp,
@Roflmasterbigpimp@lemmy.world avatar

I’ve actually never seen anything of this stuff so good job!

uranibaba,

Same here, this is the first I’ve heard of it.

root,
@root@lemmy.world avatar

Thank you so much for the transparency and for all your (and the teams) work to keep things running for us <3

uis,
@uis@lemmy.world avatar

Is there a way to see all reports made by myself and see their statuses?

howsetheraven,

Would someone be able to ELI5 why lemmyshitpost has this problem but other communities don’t or at least seemingly? I would think if they can do this to one lemmy.world community, wouldn’t they be able to do all?

RanchOnPancakes,
@RanchOnPancakes@lemmy.world avatar

Very confused by that as well. Its odd.

aidan, (edited )

My understanding from what I remember is that the community was largely where one user was posting pro-Republican memes(but I might be misremembering the community) so I suspect it was the targeted effort to shut up that. (If I am remembering the community correctly).

Edit: Nevermind the community I was thinking of was !shitposting

givesomefucks,

Oh yeah…

Lots of Democrats are willing to post CSAM to stop one random idiot on Lemmy from posting fucking “pro republican memes”

aidan,

I didn’t say democrats, I said one person. I don’t know their ideology, and like I said I don’t remember if that was the same community- and can’t check.

givesomefucks,

Oh, you’re that rightwing teenager who wants to abolish education that got a mod spot in one of the politics subs because you said you wouldn’t remove right wing propaganda…

Now I understand what you’re doing here. Spreading rightwing propaganda.

aidan,

I’m not a teenager, I don’t want to abolish education. I’m not spreading right-wing propaganda, I’m stating why it could be that it was localized to this community. I think you could and at some point may have 4chan users or whoever do this same thing to other communities. But 👍 discredit me as a person rather than what I put forward (not as a fact, just as I said clearly as a vague memory).

PS. It depends what you’re definition of right wing is.

FartsWithAnAccent,
@FartsWithAnAccent@lemmy.world avatar

Just saw this: That is fucking awful. Thank you for your service to the community and for protecting us from seeing that shit.

figaro,

Lemmy devs NEED to get mod tools out asap. Approved posts only, whitelisting users for communities, etc.

helloharu,
@helloharu@lemmy.world avatar

Honestly, as a moderator of a community this shit concerns me to no end. We desperately need more tools.

SwallowsDick,

For some reason I only got this on my feed now. But if you read this mods, thank you for all your hard work

Clbull,

To me this is a flaw of federation in general and I really think the solution should be to defederate yourselves from other instances until further notice, and only federate with trusted communities.

With how Lemmy (and the fediverse in general) is currently set up, what’s stopping malicious actors from just creating another Lemmy instance of their own then targeting another community until you’re forced to close that one like you did with Lemmyshitpost.

infinipurple,

I mean, you have a point, of course, but the aim of these digital terrorists is precisely to take Lemmy down. These attacks are happening across many different instances and the long-term solution cannot just be to give up.

But if all the instances work together on a federated solution, we might have a chance to keep Lemmy alive long enough that a) this sort of thing will naturally die down, and b) the collective efforts will allow bad actors to be identified and stopped no matter where they’re coming from.

mvirts,

Don’t forget this happens with sites like Facebook and reddit but they pay people to clean up and sweep it under the rug. At least the visibility shines light on the problem.

Rawdogg,

What kind of lowlife piece of shit do you need to be to post some shit like that? Some people will stoop to the most depraved levels just to fuck with strangers, it’s horrifying

havokdj,

Brother, I know what you mean but this is a question you already know the answer to.

Zaki5549,

To the person uploading such things, don’t they ask themselves, what if that was your child?

sugartits,

No, they don’t.

These “people” have no empathy. They literally don’t care, and nothing you can say or do will make them care.

They are scum. Simple as that.

BloodForTheBloodGod,

You don’t want that answered, trust me

Kbobabob,

Acting like no parent has ever hurt their own child. People can do messed up stuff.

This whole situation is shitty all around, I was really hoping it would be an isolated incident and that they wouldn’t come back. I think I speak for everyone when I say that the bastards posting CSAM need to be jailed or worse. Disagree with an instance or community all you want, the instant you pull something like this, you’ve lost every single argument and are irredeemably a horrible person not worthy of touching a computer ever again.

Once again pedophiles ruin everything nice. I know me saying this isn’t that helpful since I can’t do anything about it, but I’m sorry this is happening on your instance (and is getting federated to other instances). Don’t worry about inconvencing regular users, taking action against CSAM is far more important and any half amicable user will understand.

Some resources for reporting CSAM if you come across it anywhere (not just Lemmy):

US: www.missingkids.org/cybertipline

Canada: cybertip.ca/app/en/

International: www.inhope.org

Last but not least, a reminder that if you accidentally load CSAM on your device, in most cases it will get cached to your storage because the majority of apps and browsers employ disk caching by default. You should at the very least clear your caches and then trim and fully wipe the free space on your device (maybe also directly shred the actual files if you can do that/know how to). Also know if you have any mandatory reporting laws where you live and comply with them. (EDIT: another commenter mentioned that in some jurisdictions you might actually not be allowed to delete them immediately and, presumably, have to contact police immediately reporting the active file on your device.) CYA to prevent yourself from getting screwed because of someone else’s horrible acts. Also, something I’ve been thinking about since this whole thing started: it might also be helpful to use a no-disk-cache browser/app (or disable disk caching on your current browser/app if you are able to) if you do wish to keep using Lemmy, at least until this whole thing blows over, that way you can just close the page/program and reboot your device, and the local version should be gone, especially since flash storage devices cannot be reliably wiped with the “fill the drive with blank data” method (not sure how big the risk of it ending up in the swapfile or otherwise sticking around though or at what point it stops counting as possession). Being exposed to CSAM is a nightmare for this reason and unfortunately there seem to be no good resources on what to do if you’re exposed.

I am not a lawyer and no part of this comment is legal advice.

ToyDork,
@ToyDork@lemmy.zip avatar

Unfortunately, from what I’ve heard about American laws, you actually CAN’T delete it and have to report cached content to the police.

Not sure about my own country, but I do know that kind of content is basically radioactive in most jurisdictions worldwide.

HiddenLayer5, (edited )
@HiddenLayer5@lemmy.ml avatar

If that’s the case then I stand corrected, again, not a lawyer and not giving any legal advice. I’m in Canada and I need to check my local laws as well, seems like a really important thing to know in general for anyone that uses the internet. I also think governments pretty much across the board need to do a way better job of actually educating people on exactly what to do if they are accidentally exposed to CSAM, because it seems like those resources are basically nonexistent.
