What's a skill that's taken for granted where you live, but is often missing in people moving there from abroad?

I was thinking about that when I was dropping my 6 year old off at some hobbies earlier - it’s pretty much expected to have learned how to ride a bicycle before starting school, and it massively expands the area you can go to by yourself. When she went to school by bicycle she can easily make a detour via a shop to spend some...

dingus,

I briefly lived in a place with some very unintuitive place names that I had no idea how to say.

Problem is that unless it’s a very large area, there’s often not an easy way to look up how local place names are pronounced.

I remember for some of the places, I had taken to searching on YouTube hoping to find local news reports where they said the name out loud lol.

dingus,

I don’t know that it’s necessarily that it’s “inefficient”. Moreso that it’s difficult for a language to actually stick and be useful if you’re not immersing yourself in that language. You can go to class all you want, but if you’re not trying to actively immerse yourself in it beyond class, you’re not going to learn the language no matter how good the teacher is.

It’s relatively “easy” to immerse yourself in English language content because English has sort of become the “lingua Franca” of the modern world. Something like Polish, for example, isn’t.

dingus,

Lmao. It’s not quite that long, but there is a river nearish to me with a bizarrely long name. I tried looking it up one night and could only ever find people abbreviating it! So I’ll never know how the full name is pronounced lol. Maybe no one else knows either.

dingus,

It’s not always about confidence. It’s about money. Many people live paycheck to paycheck and cannot afford to just randomly quit their job without having another lined up. It’s a bit odd that you keep coming back to things like confidence when it really has nothing to do with it.

I’m lucky that I don’t live paycheck to paycheck. I can take time between jobs to find a new one if I’d like. But many people do not have that luxury and cannot just quit their job…

dingus, (edited )

That would last you two years of not working??? That wouldn’t last me a year of rent (maybe 6 months or less), never mind other expenses like food. I don’t even live in an overly expensive place like California or NY. I also don’t have any extravagant expenses. What in the world place do you live in with rent that cheap?

The insane levels of post-COVID inflation has been a real bitch, though. Prior to COVID, that would have been around a year’s worth of rent (but still not enough for other things like rent and utilities). But everything has skyrocketed since. But even pre-COVID, I can’t imagine $10k being two years of total living expenses.

dingus,

In general, the OP seems a bit out of touch with a lot of things. They also recently asked why people stay in shitty jobs instead of just quitting them before they have another job lined up. Money. Money is why.

I’m guessing they maybe live with their parents who only make them pay nominal rent, giving them the freedom to not have many bills and to allow them to have large stretches of time between jobs if needed.

dingus, (edited )

I pay around that per month, but that includes all of my expenses, including rent and other bills, not just credit card alone. Maybe the person you’re responding to has kids or lives in a higher COL area or something.

In some places, rent alone might be that much though.

dingus,

I don’t know much about their situation, but one of my coworkers has kids in daycare and it seems insanely expensive to the point where they’ve recently needed to get a second job.

What do you think is the best way to handle trash?

So, I’m not really interested in your opinion since almost every comment or post that I’ve ever read online about trash is based on trash knowledge about trash. I’m actually posting this “question” because it’s the biggest community on Lemmy where I can adjust my post to not break the rules and get a lot of people to...

dingus,

Do we have a lost Lemmings sub like there was a lost Redditors one?

I reported the post for not being related to the community.

dingus,

Idk…I like my job and I’m proud I worked my way to get there. I get to see some really awesome things and I love my coworkers. Whenever I see my family, I like to tell them about interesting cases I’ve recently had.

dingus,

I think there’s something to that statement. Hell, my old job was essentially just a form of data entry, but I managed to find things interesting with it and actually rather enjoyed it. Pay was shit tho so I went back to school to get to where I was now. But I for the most part agree with you. You can find interest in many things if you try hard enough. Not the case with some, for sure, but it’s definitely more than some people realize.

And being interested about a topic makes for a good jumping off point when getting to know someone.

dingus,

Lmao I used to “collect” listings like this a while back. When pricing bots go out of control, shit gets wild lol

dingus,

My favorite Reddit app was killed (RIF), but I stumbled into Red Reader. For some reason Reddit still allowed it to continue. It’s not bad.

dingus,

I feel you. The problem I have is that I mostly used Reddit for niche communities. Those niche communities don’t really exist here. I tried to do without, but it doesn’t scratch the itch. I’ve even tried making a couple. But when you’re mostly just talking to yourself in a void it’s not really the same. So unfortunately I have had to go to back to Reddit for those niche communities.

dingus,

Hm…I don’t think I’ve heard of trailers having sliding glass doors for the entrance. But I’m really curious as to what this looks like. I’ve never heard of anyone having a sliding glass door for their main entrance, trailer or not. I’m trying to picture how that locks and unlocks.

dingus,

Twenty?? Jesus, not everyone is able to travel that much.

dingus,

See for me I do that every day. I have no life. So being able to do nothing on my days off isn’t special and is boring. Idk.

dingus,

For me, it just makes me feel like I’ve taken a sleeping pill and not really anything else. I can see why people would like it if they can’t sleep, but it’s not exactly fun or enjoyable to me. I’ve taken very small amounts. With alcohol, you get a fun mental effect. With weed, I’m so drowsy and sleepy that I cannot do anything at all and it’s unpleasant. I don’t get a mental effect with it besides making it harder to concentrate.

dingus,

Yeah I’m not in a legal area so my experience is minimal. I don’t have a “plug” and I’m not interested in finding one and getting in that mess. I wish they would just legalize it so I could try different types.

Yeah I for sure wasn’t trying to say that you meant it’s for everyone. I was more just relating to the topic of the OP about something I don’t enjoy but wish I could.

dingus,

I’m like this too. I also don’t ask people to hang out because I don’t want to bother them and I don’t want to just assume they like me and want to do anything together. Yeah I don’t make friends that way and it can be lonely.

dingus,

Adopting is often incredibly incredibly expensive and it can sometimes take years of extensive interviewing, paperwork, and procedures to go through even if you have the money.

dingus,

?? What country is that where unplanned pregnancies don’t exist?

I can assure you…even if it’s seen as taboo in your country, it still happens.

dingus,

Getting off topic now, but I find it so odd that I’m not a person driven to do that. Makes me feel like I’m disconnected from the human race.

Long ago I stumbled across the asexual community, but I don’t relate to them either. The vast majority of them still have sexual urges and are driven to masturbate. They just don’t feel like they need a partner to do so. I don’t even seem to have the ability to do so let alone the urge. So I can’t relate to even them.

It makes me kind of feel left out of being human, tbh. And it can be rather disconnecting from others.

Not a late bloomer either. I’m almost 30. Although I have always wondered what would happen if I took MDMA.

Why are YouTube comments so much different than any other comments made online

YouTube comment sections are weirdly positive always. It could be a video of some horrible crime and the comments will be about how great the channel is and encouraging the channel to keep making more videos. When j visit actual fan pages anywhere else online there are always a mix of opinions. But youtube is constantly full of...

dingus,

It’s so utterly bizarre. I don’t generally see comments like this, but there is this one channel that I had been watching recently where every single comment of every video on their channel is like that. Feels like I’m in some sort of weird bizarro world.

dingus,

Why would I want to wall mount a TV if it’s large?

dingus,

Can’t you just go through the setup process with some dummy account details then just disconnect everything when it’s done updating?

dingus,

I’m almost 30, living US and don’t know how to drive a manual.

I just don’t understand the purpose of learning or the superiority complex around those that drive manual. In my region of the world, the vast majority of cars are automatic to the point where you might have to straight up custom order a vehicle to get manual.

Sure, if I’m outside of the US, manual might be the standard in some areas…but I have no interest in attempting to drive a vehicle in a foreign country where I don’t know their local laws of the road. I’d rather take public transport or use services like taxis, Ubers, Lifts, etc.

It’s the year 2023. Automatic cars nowadays are more efficient than manuals in a majority of cases.

If you want to drive a manual or you prefer manuals, that’s great! More the power to you and I’m glad you like it! But to have a superiority complex about it is just odd.

It’s like some boomer making fun of a gen Z kid for not knowing how to use a VCR. So what? You don’t to learn how to use a VCR in 2023.

Again, this is in terms of my region. I get that manuals are common in other regions. But again, I have no interest in driving in a region where I don’t know the local rules of the road.

How to retain my evening optimism?

Sometimes when I stay up late doing something creative I end up getting this very comforting feeling about the future. A sort of certainty that everything will work out in the end and that luck happy coincidences will always be on my side. If I had this sort of confidence throughout the day, I would live a much more pleasant and...

dingus,

How interesting. I tend to get sad in the late evenings, especially at night. I’m usually in a far better mood midday.

has your YouTube consumption decreased after implementing the "no history, no recommendations" feature?

I noticed my consumption has decased quite a bit. I would visit regularly to watch content from few channels. I would probably still visit every so often to watch the new videos. But the experience has become more deliberate and conscious. I go to YouTube because I want to go and watch something specific. Mindlessly browsing and...

dingus,

I’m American. I use adblockers extensively and do not pay for premium. I’ve always enjoyed my recommendations and they have always been very relevant to my interests. I don’t get spammy content.

The Spotify Car Thing cost $100, but I can't use it anymore. (lemmy.ml)

EDIT: The only reason why I still had it at this point was because I could use it with other apps. However, now that my Spotify Subscription is cancelled, it doesn’t work with anything. It’s mildly infuriating because today, I can’t still use it with other apps like I was able to yesterday....

dingus,

Seriously, what does this do that a phone doesn’t? Am I missing something? Even early Android/iOS devices could run Spotify in their time (although not always anymore). What does this do?

dingus,

I have hundreds upon hundreds of songs in my Spotify music library. Downloading them one by one sounds like hell. And then I wouldn’t be discovering new music either.

dingus,

My phone mount attaches to my car’s air vent and I’ve been using it for years. Cost maybe 15 bucks.

dingus,

I have hundreds upon hundreds of songs in my Spotify music collection. The people telling me to just pirate my library are absolutely wild. I can’t even imagine how long it would take me to find and download every single song. And then I wouldn’t have a simple way to discover new music. Spotify is the one and only subscription service I find to be useful.

dingus,

Weird. Last I looked into an Android Auto update or something like this for my car, it was like $2000-3000. These cheapo units don’t seem to replace the functions my current dash screen properly.

I wonder if it’s because my dashboard already has a screen so it’s more difficult to upgrade. It would need to integrate with the features that already involve the screen like the back up camera, climate controls, Bluetooth controls, etc.

But I mean I just put my phone in a $15 phone mount instead.

dingus,

I had someone tell me the other day that they ask AI chatbots for things that they want the correct answer for. They use it as a jumping off point to do more research to find the correct answer. Tbh, I flipped my shit a bit and kept saying “you know it’s not designed to just know the correct answer to everything, just to generate sentences from data collected online”.

The fact that people use AI text generators for legitimate inquiries is just so incredibly concerning to me that I could hardly believe it to be true. And I don’t know how to respond to it.

Even weirder was that Google asked me the other day if I wanted to turn on AI generated answers for my search results. Wtf? Why would I want random convincing sounded nonsense to populate my search results??

Tips on how to print a deck of cards?

Hello fellow lemmings! I’m designing a customized deck of cards as a present for a friend of mine. When finished, I’d like to print it by myself, because online print services would cost way too much for a single deck of cards. I’d like the cards to be robust and durable, and to be easy to shuffle. Is there a particular...

dingus,

The timing of OP’s inquiry couldn’t be more perfect for me. I had this as a gift idea recently as well and was curious on what websites people recommend. Thanks for the links!

dingus,

Can’t you get a happy medium with a split, side mounted controller for your phone then? Would be cheaper than the steam deck, but better for ergonomics than a phone clip to a regular controller.

dingus,

Yeah there’s a lot of give and take I suppose. There’s also an advantage to the split controller attachment model in that it’s more portable than a giant honking Steam deck tho I suppose.

dingus,

The Piped link bot is obnoxious and unnecessary

dingus,

Have you met people? They don’t do that.

dingus,

The arm one is dumb because I’ve seen people with unwashed hands grab it. The foot one makes more sense. Although it’s not accessible like you said.

dingus,

This is what I prefer to do, but more and more establishments nowadays are getting rid of paper towels in favor of hand dryers. So then I have to grab the handle barehanded. I try to use my shirt in those cases.

dingus,

Fun fact about the person you’re responding to…

In another thread they said they don’t wash their hands after using the bathroom, even after taking a shit. So that’s the kind of person you’re dealing with lmao.

dingus,

It’s not lame, it’s sweet :)
