I started lemdro.id. Pretty cool domain name, right?

This profile is from a federated server and may be incomplete. Browse more on the original instance.

I think it could have a place for some things. Not sure yet

Basically, the lemmy backend service for some reason marked every instance we federated with as inactive, which caused it to stop outbound federation with basically everyone. I have a few working theories on why, but not fully sure yet.

TL;DR lemmy bug, required manual database intervention to fix

This was a stressful start to a vacation!

For a more detailed working theory…

I’ve been doing a lot of infrastructure upgrades lately. Lemdro.id runs on a ton of containerized services that scale horizontally for each part of the stack globally and according to load. It’s pretty cool. But my theory is that since the backend schedules inactive checking for 24 hours from when it starts that it simply was being restarted (upgraded) before it had a chance to check activity until it was too late.

theory:

  • scheduled task checks instances every 24 hours
  • I updated (restarted it) more than every 24 hours
  • it never had a chance to run the check
  • ???
  • failure

This isn’t really a great design for inactivity checking and I’ll be submitting a pull request to fix it.

fyi, I replied in this thread!

lemdro.id doesn’t disable editing so I’m not sure what you mean

have you tried in the default lemmy ui? it might be a sync bug

cole,

not surprising, but super disappointing. Beeper Mini was a dream come true

Obviously I want RCS. But I’m realistic in what I have right now. And right now what I got was working group chats

lmfao my thoughts too. This is so easy just mention you’d like to try it

I Made Screen Brightness Control on Gnome Much Better (gitlab.gnome.org)

Anyone here struggle with trying to adjust brightness on Gnome in low light? At the low end, the steps are way too far apart, and at high brightness they’re almost imperceptible. Every other operating system uses a brightness curve that better matches human perception....

@cole@lemdro.id avatar

there is a ddcci dkms driver that exposes displays as Linux backlight devices. That integrates them into all DEs!

cole,
@cole@lemdro.id avatar

yes, all of them. That’s how laptop screen brightness is controlled

cole,
@cole@lemdro.id avatar

I agree with you, but I also thought that about Ukraine, so who knows

cole,
@cole@lemdro.id avatar

I’ve just been using proot in termux for that

what about Mafia Definitive Edition? I’d say that is probably the one good example of a remake.

Spending a few days with Hyprland made me realize how awesome Gnome is

Don’t get me wrong. Hyprland is great. I like it a lot. It looks fresh, it’s easy to configure and the keybindings are super easy to implement, but it’s also very barebones. Most of the functionality expected from a DE come from external software. Be it a top bar, an app launcher, a notification daemon or anything else....

How are touchpad gestures? Gnome rocks there

I would be willing to put money on “likely nothing” being the answer for active nuclear reactors. They’re highly automated from a safety perspective these days. I’d be more worried about chemical plants

why does everyone hate material you?

So I switched to a pixel 7 from an iphone 10 xs a few months back, and I’ve absolutely loved it in comparison to the locked down nature of an iphone. So I think to look up material you on YouTube for fun, and decide to read the comments and found that people hated it. Quick googling led to me to find two reddit threads and an...

Amazon’s Fire devices already have this, they don’t use Android with Google, they use the fully open source version. They can collect any data they want already

cole,
@cole@lemdro.id avatar

no, that’s ridiculous. Would be too expensive

cole,
@cole@lemdro.id avatar

yeah that one’s hard to get. Gotta go camp out at their factory sometimes and they limit you to once every 6 months!!

hits a little hard. broke off a long-term relationship a few months ago that I still feel

Yeah mine was 3.5 years. To be fair, I initiated it and I still think I made the right choice. But it’s really tough. It was definitely very special and I’ll miss parts of her for a long time. Doesn’t outweigh the emotional toll some of our mistakes had though. Definitely doesn’t help to care about her and also have to watch her heart get destroyed by my own choice :/

cole,
@cole@lemdro.id avatar

It’s just so hard that you can’t do anything about it. For them, you could solve it so easily by just coming back. But for you, you know that’s not an option because it can’t be. It sucks

I wonder if a Linux community would have a good home on lemdro.id. Accessible to beehaw and LW

Copy-pasting this from a comment I made a few days ago. I’m so tired of this misconception. Google’s business model literally disincentivizes selling personal data. The business model is built on selling targeted advertisements. Google wants to keep this data to itself because it gives them a competitive advantage in the ad space.

Selling your data would give competitors power in the marketplace. So yes, Google collects data and uses it, but no, Google does not sell your data. It sells targeting BASED on your data.

Very different, regardless of if it is any better.

@cole@lemdro.id avatar

they cancelled that

cole,

yeah it’ll probably find its way in under a different name in a more subtle way. use firefox

how does the server encrypt the message it sends without the secret? Or is that stored during sign up?

good explanation, thank you! I’m very familiar with ssh key auth so that makes sense

I don’t really know if this hate is warranted. The ADA is a really nice and forward looking piece of legislature. We do better for accessibility than most countries

Phishing Mails (lemmy.world)

This will be a quick post. We have received a phishing mail to our [email protected] mail address telling that they are “lemmy.world Security Team”, telling that they will “disconnect” your account from our instance. This is ofc, not us. Do not fall for it! The attached image is how the mail looks like....

cole,
@cole@lemdro.id avatar

I’ve gotten an email like this before for lemdro.id. I think it’s a generic phishing email since the community links look like email addresses (and actually often are)

cole,
@cole@lemdro.id avatar

Yeah no worries, all I’m saying is it’s a silly phishing attempt since it is only emailing admins!

ugh, stop adding bloat to my browser. I don’t want your shitty shopping assistant Mozilla as much as I don’t want it in Edge or Chrome. Once extension support in Epiphany is good enough for KeePassXC I’m switching away from Firefox entirely…

Fyi, it should be fixed now
