Congress approves bill barring any president from unilaterally withdrawing from NATO (thehill.com)

Congress has approved legislation that would prevent any president from withdrawing the United States from NATO without approval from the Senate or an Act of Congress. The measure, spearheaded by Sens. Tim Kaine (D-Va.) and Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), was included in the annual National Defense Authorization Act, which passed out of...

Exactly my thought. This looks like the Biden admin taking steps against the return of Trump. The conventional wisdom unfortunately suggests Trump will return, but this is the first official thing I’ve seen that suggests perhaps official staffers think the same.

I think the return of Trump is the end of the USA as we know it, but also the Democratic establishment has been late to the party to avoid it, and the left remains far more fragmented than the right.

And Congress is influenced by many factors, not the least of which being the administration of any sitting president.

I have really adored Strange New Worlds. It feels far more like Star Trek than most of the later stuff, IMHO. I’m glad they kept Ethan Peck as Spock, because he was one of the few things I liked in Disco.

I felt like most of Picard wasn’t great – especially season 2. But I’m just not a fan of big season arcs, at least not the way they do them now. One great draw for me to things like TNG is the fact I can drop in whenever. Long arcs do exist, but they don’t tend to be the point of every. single. episode. Picard felt to me like it had little to offer except the same arc all the time. Most things are just put together like 8- or 13-hour movies now – but I much prefer planet-of-the-week.

In fact, I make the same argument when discussing the Orville. Sad it was canceled, because it felt even more like Trek than SNW.

I first played GTA V on the PS3 (which sounds crazy as I think about it). I later bought the PC version, so I’m totally guilty of that double dip. Usually I’d never so such a thing, but I didn’t have a gaming PC way back when it came out.

This time around, I’m fully prepared to wait until Rockstar actually brings it to PC. I’m also more likely to just wait for a sale since it will have been a while anyway.

Related: I just spent 2 weeks doing a fanedit of STV. I will die on the hill that the plot is good if you can get around most of the silly humor of Shatner (which obviously I removed), as well as most of the weird shit between Scotty and Uhura.

At the core, it is a sweeping critique of religion and charlatanism. Larry Luckenbill as Sybok is one of the great performances in all of Trekdom.

I haven’t figured out distribution yet but you can bet I’ll be sharing with the community here (even if only for discussion).

Some of my favorite edits are actually in discussions between Kirk, Spock, and Bones. In one scene Bones has weird jokes that don’t really fit the tone of Spock’s exposition. It was a challenge to get around them, but I think I did it quite successfully, and it adds some needed gravitas to those portions.

Anyway, yes – it’ll be available somehow.

The bottom frame of the meme is from STV, and the whole thing is based on STV’s “what does god need with a starship?”.

Others have said this, but just adding to the pile: I had a system running Pop and a GTX 970. I removed the 970 and installed an RX 6600 XT and had absolutely no issues (and it was the nvidia version of Pop – I simply removed the nvidia shit at a later time).

circuitfarmer,
@circuitfarmer@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Yes, it works this way. An additional driver is not needed for AMD.

circuitfarmer,
@circuitfarmer@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

It shouldn’t be clear as mud. The answer is: it will work out of the box. Just try it.

As I said in another comment, I had a system running nvidia and Pop. AMD card worked with no issues and no additional software installed. I removed the nvidia stuff some months later. It doesn’t affect anything in the meantime.

Lots of companies about to realize that they been fucking around for years and have yet to find out

circuitfarmer,
@circuitfarmer@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

I’m impressed with Larian’s output – this time. One of the big issues with modern gaming though is companies resting on past success and using it to seed new success that may not be warranted (e.g. getting people to preorder the next game which may or may not be good).

Tldr; the most anyone should really be about any dev at this point is cautiously optimistic and let the games speak for themselves.

They haven’t explained it because it’s a giant security issue. If it wasn’t, they would have included it in the announcement.

Just another company trying to ride the wave of free press.

Darren Aronofsky To Adapt Elon Musk Biopic For A24 (www.empireonline.com)

by Ben Travis | Published on11 11 2023. Darren Aronofsky has always been attracted to stories of extremity – whether it’s the bodily intensity of The Wrestler and The Whale, the psychological torment of Mother! and Black Swan, the religious endurance of Noah, or the actual endurance test that is Requiem For A Dream. And for...

circuitfarmer,
@circuitfarmer@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

If this is honest, it won’t be a pro-Musk film. But I would be impressed if that’s actually the angle here. Unfortunately with the other news about A24 shifting direction, I think this is likely another biopic money grab, and for a very bad human, but I hope I’m wrong.

circuitfarmer,
@circuitfarmer@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

A nice trip down memory lane.

I disagree about Windows XP being a transformative shift, though. Many gamers ran Windows 2000 for its reduced system overhead, plus you still had the relative stability of the NT kernel. I didn’t switch to XP until several years later, and iirc it was because they cut support for something on Win2k.

circuitfarmer,
@circuitfarmer@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Yeah, that’s kind of a major detail for anyone worried about reparability. Surprising choice. Not a deal breaker, but definitely a step in the wrong direction in terms of design (overshadowed by other good choices).

circuitfarmer,
@circuitfarmer@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Yeah. I wish they had mentioned it actually. They went to the trouble of mentioning that they improved the battery adhesive situation.

Hugely insecure. Personally, I’d keep my green bubble (not that I ever really cared about it anyway).

circuitfarmer,

What I’m hoping is that the screen is a drop in replacement option for the original.

Out of the box, no. But I know some tinkerer is going to figure it out. Will it ever be practical? Probably not. But I’ll enjoy seeing that Frankendeck.

Disney spent $4 billion for Marvel back in 2009. They’ve made far more than that back already, and I’d argue the superhero / comic movie space is now ridiculously saturated.

Personally I hope this just leads to more varied projects instead of executives resting on a single IP until the end of time (and yes, all Marvel stuff is one big IP).

This. Seeing 1-2, maybe 3 major players in many industries now. “No monopolies here” may be true, but misses the point that the outcome is the same. This new conglomerate has just that much more capability to fuck over the little guy.

I think this is also what happened with AC: Mirage. Ubi originally had planned it as DLC for Valhalla.

At least they had the decency not to charge $70 for it, but still, it’s MBA businessthink in charge of AAA gaming right now. Unless people stop buying them, nothing changes.

That’s my read on this as well. Ignoring Disney parks, Knott’s was the only major park in California with a unique feel. All Six Flags stuff feels the same, and for that, there are too many of them.

I will never, ever get the obsession with DLSS. It runs on a single manufacturer’s cards, and it only serves to increase framerates – the need for which generally points to other issues with any game.

It is kind of like “true motion” effects on TVs ten years ago. Adding frames for frames’ sake.

What killed it, well after reviewing some PS4 gameplay I noticed that it was having audio issues, like it would allow some sounds but not all. It was almost as if it was receiving a 5.1 audio output but was missing the centre channel. Even though the PS4 was set to stereo....

It’s a reference to tons of posts about Linux gaming being filled with (erroneous) comments that most games don’t run on Linux.

True 3 years ago. False now.

circuitfarmer,
@circuitfarmer@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Scratching my head on this one – I actually prefer Factorio on the Deck vs the desktop. What about it makes it bad on the Deck? You know there’s a UI slider, right?

For controls, simply set right trackpad to mouse.

circuitfarmer,
@circuitfarmer@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

It sounds like you’re using the controller scheme that Factorio added. It’s really designed for a standalone controller.

It works alright, but if you switch (in Steam controller configurator) to standard Deck KBM layout, then R2 is click and right trackpad is mouse. Set Factorio to KBM as well and it won’t say Y anymore.

Cities: Skylines 2. Hugely problematic launch, but it runs acceptably for me on Linux (just over 40fps consistently on a Ryzen 5 7600X and a 6600 XT). I’ve got all settings on high (except Volumetric Quality set to Disabled and AA set to TAA) and it honestly looks quite good, especially with DOF set to tilt-shift.

In terms of the game itself, I’m very much enjoying it. Every mechanic seems more detailed than C:S1 and there is a lot more planning needed to make a really successful city. Not without bugs but nothing game breaking. Lacks some of the annoyances in the first game (like needing water pipes everywhere).

circuitfarmer,
@circuitfarmer@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Idk man a ton of distros don’t even work with steam

Name one. I don’t know of any.

I don’t think a single Bethesda release works on Linux

Personally I’ve never had one not work, and that includes Starfield on launch day.

No PlayStation ports do either iirc

Elder Scrolls on Linux didn’t have the stutter it had on Windows at launch. It was literally a better experience and it continues to run great. God of War runs great on Linux. Returnal runs great on Linux.

Seriously, the number one issue for Linux gaming right now is people in comments telling other people it doesn’t work.

circuitfarmer,
@circuitfarmer@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

The instructions for getting it to run are all over Protondb (needs winetricks), and even then, it looks like a minority of hardware configs that have issues – perhaps even AMD specifically.

Edit: also it looks like it may work OOTB now if you start it using Glorious Eggroll’s Proton 7.2 or higher

circuitfarmer,
@circuitfarmer@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

I can only speak from my own experience on this one, but depending on the game, letting it complete means less stuttering the first time you see some shader effect in-game. My understanding is that it offsets processing that otherwise has to happen during runtime.

I’ve seen conflicting reports of how worth it that is, and I suppose it probably comes down to a lot of factors, in particular the game itself and the power of the hardware it’s running on.

I tend to let it complete always, but for me that’s generally less than a minute. Gives me time to get my gaming beverage ready, haha

circuitfarmer,
@circuitfarmer@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

I mean, I thought “don’t support bad companies” is something most of us on Lemmy could agree with
