calypsopub,

Renaissance Man sounds better

calypsopub,

A political catch-all for non-conservatives

calypsopub,

I’m praying for a convenient lightning bolt, or the human equivalent, to take him out. Honestly, a massive heart attack would do.

calypsopub,

I agree with the others who recommended having both. I like to have multiple banks just so I don’t lose everything if one account gets compromised.

calypsopub,

Being underemployed. As long as they meet their obligations, I applaud people who don’t live for work.

calypsopub,

If somebody re-released all the Infocom games like Zork, Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, and Nord & Bert Couldn’t Make Head Or Tail Of It, I would be all over that

calypsopub,

One of the characters at my table was a blind monk who used blindsight to fight and move about the world a la Toph. It was an interesting thought exercise for us all, especially because he literally only had 30 feet of “sight.” Another time we had a barbarian who decided not to fix a severed arm because he wanted to be constantly reminded not to take stupid risks and it would keep him humble. I had another guy who rolled up a low INT, high WIS character and played him like Forrest Gump. So yeah, there are people who will spice up their roleplay with some sort of disability.

calypsopub,

I’m picturing something that walks like a spider.

calypsopub,

My first thought was just to wear a T-shirt that says “Transition now, ask me how!” But subtlety is not my forte.

Alright, I'm gonna "take one for the team" -- what is with the "downvote-happy" users lately?

Title. “lmao internet points” and all, but what is the point of participating in a community that sees assumptions and other commonly non-harmful commentaries/posts as “bad” this easily? Do folks in here are really that needy of self-validation, even if it means seeking such from something completely insignificant like...

calypsopub,

I don’t ever go back and look at the votes.

calypsopub,

Yes. It happened to my friends. They both lost their jobs and couldn’t pay the property tax on their fully paid-off house, so it was foreclosed and auctioned off.

calypsopub,

This is Texas which has no income tax, so they have high property tax. It’s about 1% per annum based on the appraised value of the property. Plus if it’s a newer neighborhood, you pay an extra amount for the cost of infrastructure until it’s paid off, usually called a MUD (municipal utility district) tax. Mine is an extra 1.2% so I’m paying roughly $1200/month in property taxes for my residence.

calypsopub,

No, that’s county, city, and school district

calypsopub,

I like to say that in Texas, you never actually own your home.

calypsopub,

“Idiot” has not been a medical term for decades. It no longer refers to a particular diagnosis. Nobody who is not an idiot thinks “idiot” in its current incarnation is ableist. See also: imbecile, cretin, crazy, bonkers, etc.

calypsopub,

I’m retired and I can finally follow my body’s clock. Bed at 3:00 am, get up around noon.

The only obligation I can’t readily schedule to my liking is worship service on Sunday.

calypsopub,

Oh heck yeah, I do the zoom so at least I don’t have to get up earlier and drive there. They keep giving me grief for it, though.

calypsopub,

That is an excellent, succinct explanation

calypsopub,

Finding my husband after he passed away in his sleep. He was 56 and had a bad heart, but this was still unexpected and awful. It’s been six years and I still struggle with intrusive flashbacks of the scene, though not as frequently as in the beginning.

calypsopub,

80 million people in the USA own weapons but only a tiny percentage commit crimes with them. Seems like that proves most people are not mad villains

calypsopub,

Came here to say Yorkshire Gold

calypsopub,

The exception is sewing machines. My 1970s version is still going while more recent ones fail because of plastic parts. The repair man offered me a great deal of money if I would sell the old one to him.

calypsopub,

Most people, especially women, crave connection. We want to feel seen and understood. Cutting us off to provide a quick solution feels as if you really just want us to shut up so you can go back to whatever you were doing.

calypsopub,

I hear what you are saying, and I’ve been there with a friend who continues to make bad choices and then cry about the logical results of those choices. However, it’s not that difficult to just say, “That sounds rough. I’m sorry you’re going through that.” There is absolutely no need to be a judgemental asshole about it. Asking, “Are you looking for advice or sympathy?” is super easy. Listening is super easy. You have to ask yourself why you are getting butthurt if somebody doesn’t immediately take your advice or deal with life the exact same way you do.

calypsopub,

This. Turn it into a puzzle and maybe you won’t be stressed out when you can’t instantly solve it so you don’t have to listen

calypsopub,

Clearly you are incapable of understanding despite multiple people trying to explain it to you.

calypsopub,

A FPS packed with Myst-like puzzles and atmosphere

calypsopub,

Let’s get KOTOR2 with an actual ending as well

calypsopub,

My husband absolutely adored these because they were wholesome with no gratuitous sex or violence. He was a conservative Christian and these were some of the few shows he could really enjoy unreservedly. (I doubt he would have been pleased to see a gay story, though. He’s not around to ask, unfortunately.)

I find them predictable and banal. But to each his own. He would watch a Hallmark movie in one room and I’d be in the other room watching Criminal Minds or something LOL

calypsopub,

Could be a fun drinking game

calypsopub,

Starting Spotify and syncing it with Android Auto

calypsopub,

Seen any good movies or shows lately?

calypsopub,

Emoticon is made with text characters like this " :) "

calypsopub,

Yep. I’ve lost 90 pounds. Finally not sweltering all the time

calypsopub,

Halt and Catch Fire felt like my autobiography

calypsopub,

Multiple methods, not really important which ones. I use an external hard drive plus I email zip files to myself.

Americans of Lemmy, what is your approach to next year's election?

2020 was… truly unique. It was so hard to stay away from doom scrolling, and I (and many others) were pretty disillusioned by the sad fact that so much of our country legitimately supported the Orange Man. I didn’t get a wink of sleep the night of the election because I genuinely considered it to be a make or break decision...

calypsopub,

Literally where can one go?

Messed up things a doctor did to you or someone you know? / Bad experiences with doctors

Today I spoke to a coworker who had bad experiences with doctors and was seeking recommendations for a new one, then other coworkers chimed in, and so I decided to ask you guys as well. Well, not for a doctor recommendation, but about your bad experienced with doctors?...

calypsopub,

I’ve been lucky with having good doctors, but my best friend OTOH … I took her to an ER because she had severe back pain for no reason. She’s diabetic, and I noticed one of her toes looked black. I pointed this out to the doctor, who dismissed it. She said my friend just needed some pain killers for strained muscles. As we were sitting in a drivethru waiting to pick up the prescription, my friend was getting worse, so I took her to a different ER. They said she was just constipated and gave her some laxatives. Two days later she is screaming in pain, can barely move, and is shitting herself from the laxatives. We take her to a third hospital ER and insist she be admitted. She lay in a hospital bed for days with no diagnosis. Finally when she fell and they realized her legs were paralyzed, they did an MRI and found she was nearly dead of sepsis and had three abscesses along her spine.

They put her on strong IV antibiotics and did surgery to clean the abscesses – telling her she only had a 20% chance of surviving the surgery and would probably never walk again. Four months later, after learning to walk again, she finally went home. She still has chronic back pain and adhesions from the surgery.

All from an infected toe that doctors couldn’t be bothered to check out.
