Very_Bad_Janet,

One of my High School teachers told me that when someone asked him for directions and he didn't know the way he'd just make something up because it made the person so happy and he liked how they smiled at him, all trusting.

What does it say that he was a teacher. Also: What does it say about me that he was my favorite teacher?

Very_Bad_Janet,

Trader Joe's smoked sardines in olive oil is delicious.

My advice is to use a body wash or soap with salycitic acid. It's in products for preventing or treating acne - the salycitic acid kills the bacteria that causes body odor. You can also apply a toner with salycitic acid directly to your armpits (Stridex pads work well for this - they even make ones that are larger for use on the body). I do this and have zero B.O. Some people use other antibacterial soaps like Hibiclens or Paroxyl.

Also make sure that you are wearing clean clothes (wearing the same tshirt a couple of days in a row is taking a chance).

ETA: This won't help reduce sweating but it will help with the bacteria that feeds on the sweat.

I'm American and I can't think of a comedy show that makes fun of Indian food. Can you name one of them so I can check it out?

I'd say most medium to large sized cities in the US have Indian restaurants, so it's not so unusual.

Very_Bad_Janet,

Neither. They get in the way when I put on my backpack.

Very_Bad_Janet,

I guess the takeaway is to make sure you have a will.

Very_Bad_Janet,

Hmm. Is this supposed to be affecting everyone using Firefox with adblockers? I just played a video on FF with uBO. Worked fine for me with no delays. Maybe because I searched for the video using DDG and watched it via DDG (meaning I did not click through and watch it on YT)?

Very_Bad_Janet,

We use espresso grounds in our coffee maker, so we drink Americanos by default.

Very_Bad_Janet,

You want to buy a mattress encasement AND a box spring encasement to cover both. An encasement surrounds and seals in the mattress/ boxspring. A topper just covers the top.

Make sure you buy the correct size (too loose is less helpful). If you have a futon, buy an encasement specifically for a futon.

Very_Bad_Janet,

Can you say where you're located because that sounds like a screaming deal. I'm in NYC though, so everything sounds affordable to me.

Very_Bad_Janet,

You were extremely lucky with that interest. Congrats! What are you both planning/doing for retirement now? Are you going to try to max your contributions to make up for cashing out?

Very_Bad_Janet, (edited )

Dr. Bronners liquid Castille soap. I've tried others but they are not as concentrated or as moisturizing. Great diluted for shaving legs.

Sensodyne Pronamel Intensive Enamel Repair Toothpaste. I've reversed three cavities that were forming by using this toothpaste.

Persil detergent. I use other detergents but always have this on deck for tough stains or funky items.

Jockey women's cotton underwear. There's a specific cut that they have that's flattering and comfortable.

Very_Bad_Janet,

If you like Cetaphil and Cerave, you will also like Vanicream and Eucerin.

Very_Bad_Janet,

Unless you want a brand name IUD? I got a Mirena covered, no problem, in the US.

Very_Bad_Janet,

If you're looking for stuff for your face, I also recommend the following Korean beauty items. Nows a good time to buy them from kbeauty online retailers because most are doing deals and free shipping (November 11 is a Korean holiday):

  • Illyoon Ato Ceramide Concentrate Cream
  • Etude House Soon Jung 2x Barrier Intensive Cream
Very_Bad_Janet,

Is Mbin new? Do you have a URL for your Mbin instance? Does it have a lot of communities/magazines, and can I follow them through kbin?

What's an alternative to Spotify that doesn't play you the same fucking songs over and over?

I am in an intense love-hate relationship with Spotify. It makes good mixes for me, I have found a lot of great bands that way. BUT IT KEEPS REGURGITATING THE SAME SONGS IN THERE. I know about Song Radios and Artist Radios, so please don’t recommend those. Smart Shuttle doesn’t cut it, either....

Very_Bad_Janet, (edited )

I do the same with YT Music and tolerate the ads. Then, when they hit on a few songs I'm enjoying, I go to Newpipe and play playlistss or extended version of the songs/artists. I also build my own playlists in Newpipe.

If I discover a song I like IRL (say, on the radio or in the background of a video), I add it to both YT Music and Newpipe (e.g., I'm listening to Chaleya from the movie Jawan on Newpipe right now, discovered when I was out and about).

ETA: Newpipe also offers auto-enqueing, which might lead to more discovery.

So funny to troll this community with wholesome life-love-laugh type memes. Well played, OP.

Very_Bad_Janet,

I love sitcoms but beneath their light exterior they always have a heart of darkness, or at least a trace of one. But given your OP, I figure you can handle a teensy bit of a shadow side. Here are some generally upbeat shows with lots of laughs.

Catastrophe- I think it strikes the right balance of optimism in the face of doubt. It's light but not saccharine. It's my favorite sitcom.

It Crowd

Black Books

30 Rock

Black-ish

Adventure Time

Mentioned in lots of other replies:

Parks and Rec

New Girl (extremely underrated)

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

Brooklyn 99

Taskmaster

WILTY

Very_Bad_Janet,

Please watch them - they're very different but both great. What shows not on my list would you recommend?

Very_Bad_Janet,

If we're talking Paul F. Tompkins we should also recommend the original run of Mr. Show (starring Bob Odenkirk and David Cross). A hilarious and extremely influential sketch comedy show.

And if we mention David Cross we should also recommend the original seasons of Arrested Development. One of the most well written sitcoms ever.

Very_Bad_Janet,

Thank you - I'm adding these to my list! And yes, I'm a Good Place fan. I didn't mention it because OP mentioned recently seeing it.

Very_Bad_Janet, (edited )

Lots of good recommendations here.

But if you're willing to try YouTube again, you can watch seasons of the British panel game show Taskmaster. The contestants are almost all stand up comics. The challenges are extremely creative, entertaining and a bit twisted, and the solutions the contestants come up with are often really brilliant. There are 16 seasons and there are versions from other countries like New Zealand.

Very_Bad_Janet,

Am I the only one who likes this song? I even love Last Christmas. I think it's because I don't go into brick and mortar stores often, so I can go a whole season and only hear it a few times. Somehow I hear Father Christmas and Christmas Wrapping way more often.

Very_Bad_Janet,

I literally just figured out what the meme was about by your comment. I thought people were annoyed by Elmo's voice lol.

Very_Bad_Janet,

Wow, this is kind of fascinating. If anything it points to nature over nurture, which I would think your brother would find a relief.

Very_Bad_Janet,

This is why I appreciate therapy. It's a tool for better parenting, in a way.

Very_Bad_Janet,

I can't wait to tie my entire financial life to X.

Very_Bad_Janet,

I just went to 12ft.io and got the following message:

This Deployment has been disabled.

Your connection is working correctly.

Vercel is working correctly.

So I'm guessing the site is gone?

Very_Bad_Janet,

I saw this advice on an IG post (https://www.instagram.com/reel/CxBpKwrSblD/?igshid=MTc4MmM1YmI2Ng==).

This is for a desktop computer. I'm adding in the brackets what I believe are the actions they are taking in the IG video if you don't want to click the link:

"If you're on a website that's forcing you to log in, [right click over the article and select] Inspect Elements, highlight over [the page and select] Delete [and then select] Node."

I have not tried this myself. If you have clearer directions please reply to this comment!

Very_Bad_Janet,

I believe this is one of the main reasons for low uptake right now.. Many people have gotten COVID once students returned to school in late August/early September. They should've released the COVID vaccine early August - waiting to couple it with the flu vaccine was a terrible idea.

Very_Bad_Janet,

From what I heard Novavax is available at many Costco stores.

Walgreens and CVS have Pfizer and Moderna. I got the Moderna Spikevax at Walgreens in late September.

Very_Bad_Janet,

This might be a wild idea but how do you feel about asking you friends, male and female, if they know of any single women and for them to set you up on some dates? A few are bound to know someone and something might come out of it (at the very least an amusing anecdote).

Very_Bad_Janet,

I'm American so I thought I didn't know any Black British historical figures. Thanks, OP, for posting about this because it's inspiring me to educate myself on the subject.

Very_Bad_Janet,

I'm a woman and I liked this advice.

My tip: This might sound obvious but I'd have you wear a bright color, like red, in the first photo in your profile. It will catch the eye and stand out a bit. This is not my original thought - I got it from someone who was describing her experience on dating apps and what worked best for her. You want to catch someone's eye while they are swiping quickly through pictures.

Very_Bad_Janet,

I have to admit that's a nice stick. I thought he was joking but it's actually perfect. Like, platonic ideal of a stick.

Very_Bad_Janet,

Are you married and do you have any children together? Do you consider her or yourself traditional in relationships (however you define traditional)?

Very_Bad_Janet,

I asked because I believe marriage and children can add pressures to a relationship, and may test right wing beliefs.

For example: What if your wife changed her mind about being a SAHM and wanted to continue working after having a child? How would you both handle household chores and parenting duties?

More examples: If your wife became pregnant but it was an ectopic pregnancy, would you support her having an abortion? Would you support an abortion if the baby was diagnosed with anencephaly while still in the womb?

Would you use IVF if you had trouble conceiving? Would you use birth control to plan the size of your family?

It's easy to see eye to eye about hypothetical situations but maybe less easy when it's real life.

Very_Bad_Janet, (edited )

An ectopic pregnancy would risk her life and her future fertility. Babies with anencephaly do not survive for long after birth, being stillborn (around 75% of them) or dying within hours or days; this pregnancy wouldn't risk the mother's life, though, but would be traumatic.

Without googling the definition of ectopic, we’d likely abort anything that put her at significant risk, or in the case of a major defect that would ruin all three of our lives.

States with very strict abortion laws or where abortion is illegal would prevent your wife from having an abortion in the your and my scenarios. She might be forced to delay the abortion until she ruptured in the ectopic scenario, or be forced to give birth to a dead baby or.one who died in a few hours. There are other dangerous scenarios when an abortion would be the humane option. This is something to keep in mind when voting or supporting candidates. ETA: I didn't mean this to sound like a lecture. I was just pointing this all out because you actually don't sound ring wing based on how you described your beliefs.

Very_Bad_Janet,

Hey OP, it sounds like you've worked hard to make positive changes in your life. After a lot of self activation like that it's not uncommon to feel some side effects - namely a bit of anxiety or depression. A therapist would be beneficial.

Very_Bad_Janet,

OP was clearly talking about BDSM. Now he's too embarrassed to correct us and is continuing with this whole communities / magazine charade.

Very_Bad_Janet,

I agree it may be regional. Seltzer is very popular in NYC, where I am. I once overhead flight attendants on a flight discussing how much seltzer they had to have on hand because they were headed to NYC.

Very_Bad_Janet,

Thanks for the replies. You've convinced me not to try it.
