As we all know, Roblox is garbage tier gameplay structured around psychological cues to get children to fill an endless pit with fake money bought with real money....
Kids also have different attitudes on what constitutes value to them. So while parents see robux as total ripoff, kids don’t have the experience of playing a game and receiving the whole thing and not being expected to pay real money to skip the hard parts.
Kids aren’t the only ones who waste their money on frivolous gaming transactions though. Millions of adults by battlepasses for games or we wouldn’t have that crap in games either.
I’ve noticed that there seems to be a lot of activity, enough to replace Reddit, on the most popular communities and instances. Even my more niche communities such as !fantasyfootball has had more activity lately. Although the niche ones have a way to go to be replacements for their counterparts on Reddit
I really like the idea of a clamshell foldable as opposed to a book style foldable. But my 1st gen Razr stopped working after 9 months of use. I decided to go with an iPhone 13 mini instead after that. I’d want the plus over the lower priced Razr for the more capable outer screen.
I’ve noticed YouTube specifically has become more addictive, I never used to be one to sit and scroll for long durations before but I often catch myself spending way too long on shorts now...
Money wins, every time. They’re not concerned with accidentally destroying humanity with an out-of-control and dangerous AI who has decided “humans are the problem.” (I mean, that’s a little sci-fi anyway, an AGI couldn’t “infect” the entire internet as it currently exists.)...
I’m a heavy emoji user, texting is such a poor medium for communication, many times people get the wrong message, but with an emoji you’ll get an idea of the face I’m making, so less chance of misunderstanding...
I assume there are people who read these things, otherwise companies wouldn’t send me so many of them. I seem to get daily spam from literally any company I’ve ever interacted with in any way, and they are long boys full of text and pictures that Thunderbird helpfully hides from me but I presume are full of jagged brightly...
I live by the inbox zero philosophy. Every email in my inbox is a task that needs to be completed. When they come in, they get responded to if needed and then filed, archived, or deleted. So when a marketing email arrives to my inbox, I’m immediately unsubscribing so I won’t be spammed from that site again
This is the only way I’ve found to keep my inbox from having hundreds of unread messages piling up
For anyone that already has an iCloud subscription, “Hide my email” does essentially the same thing and can’t be sanitized as it’s an actual separate alias that Apple creates for you. If you end up getting to much spam in a certain alias you can delete it and migrate the account to a brand new alias
I recently came across a thought-provoking video that delved into the struggle of overcoming internet addiction. The speaker reflected on a decade lost to the virtual world, a place that often felt more real than reality itself. Despite having a successful freelancing career and a growing YouTube channel, they found themselves...
Edit: the video was a very good perspective on information addiction, the creator mentioned how he didn’t feel like he was actually enjoying his time online. And I think that’s a good point that just consuming information can be an addiction.
I haven’t yet watched your video but I read your post and just wanted to respond to your question about what’s the difference to being well read or spending time on the internet and whether that’s productive.
What’s productive is up to the perspective of the individual. I might not find reading a lot as something worth my time, or spending time on the internet, or playing video games. But if someone wants to be well read or have many different experiences through video games or establish relationships and communities over the internet, and that helps them reach self-actualization then that was absolutely productive
You don’t have to be a “producer” to be productive.
I’m fairly new to the Fediverse, and I’d like to share my onboarding experience. Personally, I appreciate the concept of decentralization and the community-driven aspect of Fediverse. I’ve used Mastodon and Lemmy, based on ActivityPub, for a while:...
I think moderation can be solved by giving communities more freedom to merge or move instances. The “market” will correct overreaches in moderation on a free platform such as the fediverse. If the moderators on one community are overzealous or poorly moderate their community, then users will move to the same community on another instance. If instance admins are the same, the community can move to another instance.
Being able to migrate your community to a new instance without losing old content or subscribers would really help moderation stay in check.
Hot, Active, Time Sort, are open algorithms that we can see exactly how they work. Unlike closed social media algorithms which I think is the point that he is making.
The best games of this generation will have nostalgia. No one really has nostalgia for the mountains of shovel ware that came out in the 90s and 00s but it still existed.
One interesting thing is that a lot of games these days are “live service” and so they won’t be able to experience them the same ways in 20 years where I can basically play any of my favorite childhood games as I experienced them as a kid
Rockstar Games, a division of Take-Two Interactive Software Inc., plans to announce the next highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto game as early as this week, according to people familiar with its plans....
I tried the first gen razer that came out around 2020 and it was a great phone and I adored the form factor. I got it in March and the screen stopped working in November just from normal use. I probably got one with some sort of factory defect but there were so many reports of similar failures I’ve sworn off flip phones until Apple makes a 2nd gen one.
I switched to the iPhone mini from a Razr that broke in a less than a year. It pretty much fills the same niche that made me want to get the razr (small pocketable size and one handed usability) it’s just more reliable because the hardware isn’t obscenely complicated
I think that handhelds are having a bit of a renaissance but I think ultimately they will fade in popularity
PC handhelds are too big, heavy, and have bad battery life. I see mobile phones with telescopic controls like backbone/kishi or switch like joycon controls ultimately winning out. Console quality games are starting to be ported to iPhone and I’m sure android is not far behind. Emulation and cloud streaming are just getting better and better. Handhelds aren’t going to replace home consoles and PCs though, just supplement it, as it’s a device everyone already has
I’ve put some thought into how to respond to this but I just can’t get past “capitalism bros” so I’ll just say this, you can criticize the current market economy system most of the west has without being a full on communist. And those that are content with capitalism aren’t going to go out of their way to be a “capitalism bro”. So of course dissenting voices to the current status quo are going to be amplified here. Try to learn from others perspectives instead of seeking validation
The cool thing about the fediverse is that if grows to much where and the moderation turns to crap on some instances, you can always defederate from those problem instances and avoid the trouble makers entirely. Instance admins can always turn off sign ups when they feel like they have reached their limits for moderation as well. And users can always self host their own instances and only let the people they trust sign up. The fediverse is more resilient than traditional corporate run social media
Very positive on mastodon. Mostly positive on Lemmy. It has some of the same problem with trolls and stuck-up/rude posters that Reddit does but for the most part. 90% of my interactions are positive. Probably closer to 95%
I helped for the battles and reading the dialogues but he did all the exploring by himself. He’s so thrilled, but also sad it’s over. “If it involves money. It’ll be on our platform. Money or securities or whatever. So, it’s not just like send $20 to my friend. I’m talking about, like, you won’t need a bank account.”...
Unless twitter gets an actual bank charter and is regulated by the FDIC, X wouldn’t get a cent from me. Even if they claimed to pay incredible APY. Elon musk would steal billions from his customers and wouldn’t blink. And if your deposits aren’t insured then your money isn’t real.
I really like news+ but I also ended up subscribing to Apple one premier because it was going to be the same price for iCloud + Apple Music for me and my wife separately.
Don’t know if I would subscribe to any of these services if they weren’t bundled with the two I actually use
It’s not exactly that hard to crack passwords from a hash anymore. I don’t know if shadow has MFA but you should assume that if all you have is a password that your account is already compromised.
For the most part, Lemmy instances are separate from the developers. But the great thing about ActivityPub and the fediverse is that we can move platforms and keep the same content. Kbin can subscribe to the same communities that Lemmy can.
I recently got “this content is unverified, please open in our app to continue” from a Google search that lead to a random Reddit thread. Nope not gonna do that. I think I found a workable solution on stack overflow after that
It reduces suffering of potential unwanted offspring and the suffering of local bird populations so I would argue that it’s unethical to not spay or neuter your cat, even if the individual cat suffers a bit from it.
I think there is an interesting argument on whether it’s ethical to keep pets at all however
#1 Pets are like teenagers, they are gonna try to have sex without you knowing.
#2 I don’t think it’s healthy or ethical to keep an animal indoors 24/7. Even pet animals need unstructured (not unsupervised) time outside to have play and use their instinct beyond just taking them for a walk. I’d apply that equal to dogs and cats although it’s probably more important for dogs.
An open area where he can run around is probably best. Depends on where you live and your cat’s preferences. I’ve heard of cats that have no desire to leave the house and others that will dart out the door at any opportunity. If you have an apartment or no fence in the back yard then it’s not a great option. Some cats do like to walk, our neighbors’ cat usually joins us on our nightly walks through the neighborhood. Off a leash of course.
One of the most aggravating things to me in this world has to be the absolutely rampant anti-intellectualism that dominates so many conversations and debates, and its influence just seems to be expanding. Do you think there will ever actually be a time when this ends? I'd hope so once people become more educated and cultural...
No remasters. Instead build in backwards compatibility so gamers can still play their original games.
I don’t care for remasters, I’d rather play something new. Remakes and remasters are cash grabs in my opinion. Same goes for remakes and reboots in movies too
This tracks. The God of the Bible sent an angel to kill the first born child of every household in Egypt unless they splattered lamb’s blood over their door. (Hence the Passover)
I think there is some valid complaints to be had against being swarmed by fanatics on Lemmy but there is no way it’s more toxic than Reddit. For the most part I’d say the community is very much the same between the major Lemmy instances and Reddit. Just with more FOSS evangelism and Linux love.
I’d say that Reddit was the exact amount of leftism. Just with more “orange man bad” in addition to the anti work/late stage capitalism bend as Reddit is more USA-centric
That’s how a mortgage works. But the point is that after those 30 years you have a million dollar asset. That you had your tenants pay for.
For a regular plebs like us that’s not a winning proposition because we can’t have our money tied up for 30 years but for people who don’t need their money liquid, it’s free real estate
In another thread, I read a user’s comment about how the lemmy experience has got progressively worse over the past few months, with a lot more trash content making it to their front page....
I haven’t seen the experience getting worse. I am amazed by the amount of shitposting subs in the all feed but it’s not a lot of effort to scroll past them.
One thing i have noticed is that folks have lost their welcoming demeanor from the initial migration and a lot more argumentative or fringe communities are highly ranked on the all feed. And users who comment something that isn’t 100% behind the prevailing belief on Lemmy will get piled on the same as Reddit. I was hoping that Lemmy would be more open to all sorts of discourse but that doesn’t seem to be the case.
FuckCars or antiwork don’t bother me, but they aren’t the kind of topics that someone who is coming from a middle of the road perspective are going to appreciate. Even more so for the full on communist communities on Lemmy.ml or others.
I think these communities deserve their voice and don’t have a problem with them hitting the all feed, I just wish they were a little less aggressive with labeling other people as trolls and downvoting or insulting them when on other instances and communities
