Try Minetest - www.minetest.net

It’s a FOSS voxel engine, so they can play multiplayer with their friends for free. MineClone2 is a Minecraft clone on Minetest, so even if their friends don’t have Minecraft, they can still play with friends.

For paid games, consider indie games, as they’re less likely to be micro-transaction bullshit. Raft, Stardew Valley, Two Point Hospital are good options. Not so much multiplayer, but Stardew supports it. Multiplayer wise, maybe Among Us if the parents are comfortable with that.

CrypticCoffee,

Not necessarily.

Many held off buying a PC because they couldn’t get a GPU due to crypto mining slurping it up. When they came back, they price for years old hardware was scandalous. People held off, until they finally needed to update that hardware. Guessing that upgrade queue has been worked down somewhat.

Has a date, or ETA been announced, or rumored for the release of Lemmy 0.19?

I hope that this post doesn’t come across as impatient, or demanding – I fully understand that Lemmy is donation funded, and is created out of the benevolence of the devs. I am merely curious if any announcement has been made in regards to a specific ETA. I am certainly excited for its release, but I also completely...

CrypticCoffee,

It’s running on Lemmy.ml. I guess they’re trying to be cautious, test thoroughly and iron out issues. My experience has been positive so far, and I do seem to be seeing more content from small communities which is great.

CrypticCoffee,

To be fair, subs kept getting hijacked. I wouldn’t blame them.

CrypticCoffee,

Company? It’s the UK communications regulator, Ofcom.

They found that many on low incomes don’t have photocard ID when they rolled out voter ID despite opposition.

Considering no one seems capable of withholding data from motivated hackers, this could be quite horrific.

CrypticCoffee,

Source? Do the UK even have a Sears Catalogue?

CrypticCoffee,

But if they catch you sweating, you’re busted. Isn’t it public record that the guy cannot sweat?

CrypticCoffee,

I guess that would explain the difficulties some apps face without push notifications and releasing APKs. These big companies want you to rely on their systems. Signal was pushing their app through play store. I don’t know if an equivalent exists, but it really needs to. We need this, combined with f-droid, so we don’t have to use spyware like the Play Store.

CrypticCoffee,

I’ve had it break many times during update. Don’t get me wrong, I liked it at first, but if you want a system that works after update, you’re probably better checking elsewhere. Linux Mint, and Kubuntu are far better simplicity wise. Open Suse or Arch if you want rolling updates.

CrypticCoffee,

I’m on OpenSuse and it’s great. If you’re tempted by Arch, go straight up Arch. Manjaro doesn’t give any pluses here, only negatives.

CrypticCoffee,

Believe internet strangers? I had it on my laptop and Pinephone. After breaking twice on both, I went for Kubuntu then OpenSuse for desktop and PostmarketOS on the Pinephone.

You may be cheerleading for Manjaro but don’t discount experience of people that went there, suffered and want others to not suffer. If you really need easy to use Arch, EndeavourOS is far superior.

CrypticCoffee,

Such a weird list. Powerwash simulator in it, but no Bullfrog game. No Dungeon Keeper, Theme Hospital, Populous, Theme Park. Not even Black and White. No Age of the Empires 2. Heroes of Might and Magic 3… Command and Conquor…

What a load of poppycock.

Considering they have Alpha Centauri in there (justifiable), they don’t seem to have many staff who have played some of the classics.

CrypticCoffee,

“Please stop spying on us”

“Oh, sorry! Didn’t mean to. Didn’t realise I was.”

CrypticCoffee,

Political associations is a real dangerous one. The fact the government could get access to information to who supports opposition parties in the wrong hands effectively end democracy in one term.

CrypticCoffee,

But we’ll be ready for it, and we’ll keep driving against it. Even after this, Chromium is something people just need to move away from. They’ve motivated us, and I believe we can make dints, and will.

CrypticCoffee,

The thing is, if they don’t offer these cheap stuff, they may have to do something crazy, like pay staff what they are worth. This definitely looks like a false economy.

CrypticCoffee,

I went with GrapheneOS and it is my preference, but we need all this software to mature. We want choices and a hardened more complete feature set, so I really want CalyxOS to succeed also. That and Lineage, /e/os, Linux Mobile options etc.

CrypticCoffee,

On OpenSuse, sudo zypper install package-name

Not too complex if you ask me.

CrypticCoffee,

You complained about reliance on GUI tools, so you’re going to have to explain how that isn’t easy to use if folk are to help you. What is the issue with that for you?

Most stuff on opensuse, you can also do on command line. Having a GUI to help people who like a GUI doesn’t mean people who like command line aren’t facilitated.

CrypticCoffee,

Beat me to it with F-Zero. What a game.

CrypticCoffee,

Subscribed. Keep up the good work :).

CrypticCoffee,

I think it seems fair enough. If Unreal are making the tools that are benefitting those industries, it’s right that they financially contribute like game devs would.

CrypticCoffee,

One thing I’ve noticed about the alternatives subreddit, is there is a lot of people persuading people against alternatives. It’s almost like there was some organising to persuade people there was no alternative.

I mean, when you factor in you’d probably get removed, or shadow-banned, or have your posts removed for mentioning Lemmy, it feels like there is a multifaceted approach to discouraging folk from leaving the reddit teet.

While there is an element of truth, it’s scattered in with exaggeration and only focussing on negatives. The objective was to say Lemmy bad, staying good.

No way is Lemmy more toxic than reddit. I find those “well ackshually” folks are much less here.

CrypticCoffee,

Oof, I can imagine that sucks. Come join us on !degoogle :) Everyone seems quite enthusiastic about finding alternatives. I’m all about the Firefox, GrapheneOS, Proton Mail, Signal, Element etc. :)

CrypticCoffee,

A lot of open source advocates do tend to be inclined to open source software on an open source link aggregator.

Signed, Open Source entusiast. :)

CrypticCoffee,

There is quite a bit of bias on reddit that makes it quite uncomfortable for some of those people. Quite often Linux, Firefox and great open source software is bashed. It can be quite disconcerting to be in a different environment, but it isn’t solely because of the views and biases of those on Lemmy. It’s also significantly down to the views and biases of those one reddit also.

CrypticCoffee,

I quite agree with you. I think tankies are quite misguided. They have good intentions, but not so great conclusions. I don’t mind engaging with them, and they mostly tend to be in good faith.

I wouldn’t describe it as toxic, and it’s weird some views in that regards. Many are probably engaging with people that just quit engaging in reddit.

CrypticCoffee,

Out of a quick glance (really quick), I found this: lemmy.ml/comment/2915403

It seems you’re throwing rocks and getting surprised when people generally respond. You cannot complain about fanboyism when you’re trying to start fires. If you don’t want those conversations, maybe don’t start 'em.

I get that when you bash Firefox on reddit, you can start a circlejerk, but you don’t get the same response here and it’s as much to do with you being used to the biases of reddit.

CrypticCoffee,

You misunderstand my point.

Communists who believe in sharing the wealth amongst the workers, fair enough.

People who will obsess about Stalin and China, and justify atrocities, not so good.

When I say tankies, I do not mean communists.

CrypticCoffee,

There wasn’t any really in that thread. You brought it up.

I’m sure you’ll warn OP, and another OP, and another OP, and another OP, and after getting any response, blame Firefox fanboys for beaing unbearable…

CrypticCoffee,

So you’re saying communists aren’t Marxists? They’re just folk who are in a weird cult of personality and love China and Russia including the capitalist elements of it? For someone from lemmygrad, I’m quite surprised…

CrypticCoffee, (edited )

No, I’m all for workers gaining their fair share of the proceeds of their wealth. I just don’t believe you need to nosh off dictators because you’re keen on the writings of Marx. Stalin != Marx.

There is very little virtue or moral high-ground in celebrating those who are guilty of atrocities.

CrypticCoffee,

Did the Gulag exist, and how do you feel that sits in with human decency and furthering the rights of workers?

He might write a lot, but we know politicians say a lot. What actions were taken and what happened under his watch is another thing entirely.

His decision to get Trotsky killed off, was that furthering the cause of workers?

CrypticCoffee, (edited )

Petty criminals in some cases. Potentially some who were starving and stole to eat. Do societies run in the interests of working people punish those people for struggling or focus on rehabilitation where it is possible? Push them into force work camps where a very significant number die. Is trying to eat a death penalty now?

Stalin ain’t that saint you think he was.

Was Trotsky working against the USSR? He was actively involved under Lenin, but when Stalin wanted to grasp power, he became a problem. Do you think Lenin was wrong and Stalin was right?

It feels very much like you’re in a Stalin shaped cult of personality, which is ultimately was what his rule of the USSR was, not some glory day communist rule poster child. If you really want to persuade people that communism is better. Evangelising a dictator isn’t going to help the case of furthering Marxist philosophy.

CrypticCoffee,

Would it really create a dead sea zone? I mean to desalinate, you’re pulling the water out, extracting salt. So effectively taking water from the ocean without the salt. Surely putting it back isn’t going to be massive issue as currents will push out more salty water to less salty areas until it is back to where it was.

I guess the art of it would be the rate of returning it to the sea, and the surface area over where it is put back. Longed pipes to deeper water will probably make a less horrific situation, as more water = less salt concentration.

Though, we shouldn’t rule out make a deal with social media, the share level of salt involved probably needs replenishing.

CrypticCoffee,

Isn’t that assuming you pipe it out using metal. Would plastic or carbon fibre be viable for this? Or at least coating a metal pipe?

CrypticCoffee,

Fair points. I appreciate the response.

CrypticCoffee,

I wouldn’t engage with them personally. I use grapheneOS. I would use their matrix for support only, but we already know the community is a little… errrr… defensive. Definitely not the place to debate stuff like this, and those folk involved are pretty bright anyway.

“Android immutable model could totally work with more customizability like desktops, and still be secure” - I read this, and don’t know enough, but I’m wondering if this is a selling point of a rival of theirs. I think they’re very precise and ardent on secure. Some of their rivals allow more flexibility, and less secure, so it could have been a conversation they’ve had millions of times with people trolling them. Obviously, they’re quite sensitive, and react way beyond the pale, but good policy is don’t troll folk that may need mental health help.

The fact you know Daniel, and the history, and went in their to debate is really quite questionable. “I wonder what would happen if I take this box of matches into this room full of flammable material”. It’s weird you’re asking people to go in and debate with them. Why are you advocating this? It’s like you’re wanting to troll them, and while there is often not excusing some of the actions on that project, what is your goal? Subtle trolling is a thing.

Either way, use what software you want. Their matrix is run by them, and they define the rules of how they operate. It isn’t a public entity, it’s a private club.

CrypticCoffee,

What is a good alternative you would recommend?

CrypticCoffee,

“meaning I wouldn’t be able to remotely lock or wipe my phone”. The original post indicated data was the issue. If they want to get the sim out and wipe it, they will. Need to solve the problem (data loss).

CrypticCoffee,

Looks that way. Often you can get hundreds of upvotes for the most engaging content which wouldn’t happen without the thousands of subscribers.

CrypticCoffee,

It’s a fork of Chromium, so Google will add it. They’ll have to specifically remove it.

Also, if companies are considering implementing WEI, they will look at most of their users on chromium users and say, we most of our users are on Chromium, so the risk is low.

The CEO can say what he wants, but it doesn’t affect whether companies will roll this out. Google can not be trusted to drive web standards, and chromium needs to stop being used if we are to make it clear to website owners that they cannot simply support Chrome/Chromium only.

CrypticCoffee,

I have used Firefox for years, and for no problem. This isn’t a general tech advice community. It’s a degoogling community.

If you’re uncomfortable with us recommending other projects not led by or influence by google, is it really the right place for you?

CrypticCoffee, (edited )

I don’t know the reason why they use Google analytics, but I think I read there was certain mitigations in place. I personally wouldn’t go there.

Google pay the most money for default search. Firefox used to have yahoo as the default search engine and could easily switch to Bing if they pay the most. Going with the most money you can get for funding the development of your browser is just sensible strategy. Firefox aren’t in the search market. Who, who cares about privacy doesn’t change their default search engine? You have yet to back up your insinuation that the default search money influences anything. I very much doubt you’ll produce anything substantial.

Considering Brave is modified Chromium, I cannot take seriously the suggestion that Firefox has more google. If Google pull the updates to chromium, Brave is dead, as they sure ain’t investing much time into building a browser. They’re more focussed on ads, and from what I’ve read, affiliate links.

You can question my knowledge base all you want. I have concerns about your motives and conclusions. I am not going to change the decision on this.
