I did not consider this option before, that might be a good option indeed!

Back in the Windows 8 days, Microsoft tried to push Universal Windows Platform (UWP), a new application format that could run on any devices running Windows 8: desktops, laptops, smartphones, tablets and even Xbox without any modification while being much more secure by default.

It failed for a multitude of reasons:

  • It was a big break from the previous application model. You had to rewrite everything.
  • To improve security, it enforced many limitation that legacy apps did not have.
  • While it was the only way to create and distribute apps for Windows Phone and Windows RT (a Windows 8 variant for low-powered laptops) their low market share did not incentivize developers to migrate to or create UWP apps.
  • It was strongly tied to the divisive Metro UI of Windows 8. People already hated interacting with this part of Windows 8, they had no desire to install apps that would force them into this UI.

UWP still lives on in Windows 10 and 11 as well as in Xbox One and Series: many system apps are now UWPs, as well as all Xbox games and apps, some cross-devices games from Microsoft Studios and some apps in the Windows Store.

Do you want Unbound to query upstream DNS over HTTPS servers or do you want unbound to answer to DoH queries?

For the former, unbound cannot query upstream DoH servers, only DoT and DNS at the moment. An issue is still open for setting DoH as upstream. A solution is to use cloudflared or dnsproxy to proxy DNS queries to DoH upstream servers.

As for the latter, unbound can be set to answer to DoH queries.

I’ve always used OVH. They are reputable, always been responsive to my questions and have an API to handle many things, including domain names, which is handy for DNS-01 challenges with Caddy and libdns.

Sounds like “Steam doesn’t allow X? We will allow X just to have you because we are so desperate for revenue”

Creating decoy Lemmy accounts for plausible deniability

So, I’ve started my own Lemmy instance. The main issue is that right now, I am the only user, which makes it pretty easy for anyone to see what kinds of communities I visited, or am subscribed to. Is there any way to automate creation of some amount of accounts, and subscribing to random communities?

BlackEco,
@BlackEco@lemmy.blackeco.com avatar

I’m afraid making your instance private disables federation.

As for making the web interface private, while it would prevent the average Joe from seeing federated communities, you could still do it through the API, which you have to keep public if you want to use alternative and mobile clients without a VPN.

Do you have any particular blocklists enabled besides the default ones? Try disabling them one by one until you find the culprit, then report a false positive to the list’s maintainers.

I use n8n, it has node-based workflows with tons of integrations and even the ability to run Javascript for advanced data processing or logic. You can go way further than IFTTT or even Zapier.

The cloud-hosted version is expensive but it’s easy to self-host (self-hosting is free).

I know you can do this because of the AWS Favicon Update add-on. My advice would be to take a look at how it does it by downloading the XPI from the versions page and unziping its content.

Edit: I did so and its mechanism is fairly basic: it’s a content script that replaces the favicon’s URL in the link tag in the document.

AFAIK this isn’t a built-in feature in ActivityPub and Kbin doesn’t implement a migration feature similar to Mastodon.

All you can do is copy your subscriptions from an instance to another (there are tools for doing that with Lemmy, I haven’t found any for Kbin), which means you can’t migrate your posts to another instance, neither automatically make your followers follow your new profile.

Apple’s letter also asked that the bill “focus on requiring manufacturers obligations to provide the documentation tools, and parts to enable the repairs performed by authorized repair channels, as opposed to a broader undefined scope of repairs.” Apple also wants repair providers to mention when they’re using “non-genuine or used” components.

The bill, as written, also requires non-authorized repairers to provide written notice of their lack of official vendor approval.

Elizabeth Chamberlain, director of sustainability at iFixit, told Ars Technica that while disclosing the use of third-party parts is reasonable, she’s concerned that it “supports unnecessary fear-mongering around used and third-party parts.”

“I also worry that lumping used and third-party parts together will contribute to further confusion. Apple’s ‘unable to verify’ warnings already blur the line between those categories,” she added.

In short, this bill allows Apple to encourage people to repair their devices at Apple-certified repair shops by marketing them as better than non-certified ones.

I wonder if they will ever implement ActivityPub and federate. I know, there’s fear of “Embrace, Extend and Extinguish”, but still, that would allow privacy-minded people to follow Threads users without giving them such data by using Mastodon, CalcKey and other micro-blogging apps.

The magic of the fediverse is that Lemmy posts are already available on Mastodon!

For example you can see every posts and comments made to this community by opening the @[email protected] profile on Mastodon. It works with Lemmy users as well (@[email protected]).

From there, you can follow communities and users as well as reply or boost any post or comment!

It also works the other way around: you can post to Lemmy from Mastodon by mentioning the community (ie. @[email protected]). Just keep in mind that the first line will be the title, while the following lines will be the post’s body, and that hashtags are rendered as text on Lemmy.

Edit: my links to mastodon.online were redirecting to the Lemmy instances instead of showing the profiles in Mastodon.

Are you logged into Docker? What’s the output of docker login?

BlackEco, (edited )
@BlackEco@lemmy.blackeco.com avatar

You should login with an Access Token rather than your password. You can generate a new Access Token here.

BlackEco,
@BlackEco@lemmy.blackeco.com avatar

Oh, do you run the Docker commands as root?

BlackEco,

What was the issue then?

BlackEco,
@BlackEco@lemmy.blackeco.com avatar

Exactly. Currently Lemmy copies thumbnail and images from remote instances locally.

BlackEco,
@BlackEco@lemmy.blackeco.com avatar

I think the local caching was intentional to reduce load on remote instances, should we disable it?

DMs on the fediverse (and Lemmy) are posts with a specific visibility that marks them as DMs. They are sent like any other posts, so there’s no encryption and instance admins could in theory read them in the database.

BlackEco,
@BlackEco@lemmy.blackeco.com avatar

By illegal, do you mean against Lemmy’s rules or against legislation?

For the former, I think it’s up to each communities rules. In general, bots should be marked as such so that users can chose to hide them if they wish. For the latter, apart from neighboring rights which allows news outlets in some countries to seek remuneration from links to articles, there’s nothing illegal in sharing links on Lemmy.

As for existing bots copying posts from Reddit, there is lemmit.online but is has been broken since Reddit removed their RSS feeds.

BlackEco,
@BlackEco@lemmy.blackeco.com avatar

I haven’t been able to subscribe to communities I’m not already subscribed to using Sync, I usually go on the web interface.

If you want to search for already copied communities, you should search lemmit’s local communities. To request new ones, you have to post on !requests, but keep in mind that the bot is broken until its author updates it.

RSS is a standardized protocol that allows you to get updates from websites when new content gets published. Using a RSS client, you can follow multiple websites in a single interface.

Not sure what you are looking for, do you want to call landline European numbers from another continent? Or do you live in the EU and want to make calls to landlines in other EU country? If the latter, please define “privacy respecting” because if what you want is for the service to not log your calls, I’m afraid they are obligated by legislation.

This is such an anti-consumer move, by refusing to unlock the bootloader Asus hinders the ability of users to extend their devices’ life beyond Asus’s original support window by flashing alternative ROMs…

BlackEco,
@BlackEco@lemmy.blackeco.com avatar

That’s not what I wanted, I wanted RDR on PC 😟

Anyway, it’s extremely weird that they chose to release it on PS4 with backward compatibility to PS5 🤔 (according to Rockstar)

BlackEco,
@BlackEco@lemmy.blackeco.com avatar

My guess is that they wanted to target the widest audience possible and with the PS5’s backward compatibility they got to release it on the PS5 for “free”.

(yes, they are missing the Xbox audience, but technically you could play the Xbox 360 version on Xbox One and Series)

I wasn’t expecting this to work, and yet it does: css-tricks.com/the-peculiar-magic-of-flexbox-and-…

When Sam says, “that item will automatically extend its specified margin to occupy the extra space in the flex container,” the way my empty filing cabinet brain interprets that is like so:

Setting the margin property on a flex child will push the child away from that direction. Set margin-left to auto, the child will push right. Set margin-top to auto and the child will push to the bottom.

[…]

Why is this useful to know? Well, I think there are a few moments where justify-self or align-self might not get you exactly what you want in a layout where using auto margins gives you that extra flexibility to fine-tune things.

BlackEco,
@BlackEco@lemmy.blackeco.com avatar

Why doesn’t html just have hcenter and vcenter tags or something?

HTML is a markup language, its purpose is to structure documents, while CSS can be seen as an additional layer that allows you to style and alter the layout of HTML documents. Because of this philosophy, it wouldn’t make any sense to have such tags.

BlackEco,
@BlackEco@lemmy.blackeco.com avatar

center is mostly for centering text and is being deprecated in favor of text-align and margin-*: auto developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/…/center

After trying secure boot out, my Ethernet connections don't work anymore?

Hey. Short story: I activated Secure boot on my MSI Mainboard and bootet in my new Debian. I realized that I had no wired internet connection and rebooted the system to deactivate secure boot again. Problem is that now my whole Ethernet is borked? I don’t get a connection in Debian or my older OpenSuse partition and the Debian...

BlackEco,
@BlackEco@lemmy.blackeco.com avatar

Check in your BIOS if on-board Ethernet is disabled. I think on MSI motherboards it’s under “Integrated Peripherals”. If not this, check PCI settings in the BIOS.

BlackEco,
@BlackEco@lemmy.blackeco.com avatar

Have you checked in the BIOS that on-board Ethernet hasn’t been disabled somehow? If not, try disabling it, reboot and enabling it back. I know my MSI board has a similar issue with the WiFi/Bluetooth chipset.

Excuse me for my lack of understanding, but why are there so many people looking to hide their traffic from their ISP with a VPN? Isn’t HTTPS enough? Are you afraid of ISPs resorting to DPI or MiM to spy on their users? Is customer protection so weak in the US that ISPs are free to spy on their customers using aforementioned techniques?

Edit: I just realized that I left out people leaving under authoritarian regimes, for whom VPNs are unfortunately required to evade their government.

BlackEco,
@BlackEco@lemmy.blackeco.com avatar

ISP still knows which sites you connect to.

Yes, because they know the IPs your packets go to, but if there are multiple websites behind a single IP they won’t know which one (unless you use your ISP DNS server, which you should probably not)

Which YouTube video you are watching to. etc.

No, because the URL is contained within the HTTP packets which are encrypted with SSL (the S in HTTPS), so unless the ISP does MiM, they cannot know which URL you are visiting.

BlackEco,
@BlackEco@lemmy.blackeco.com avatar

Oh, thanks for this precision, I wasn’t aware of this. And now that I think of it, it’s obvious that the first exchange with a server has to be unencrypted
